Rethinking sexual response: are erogenous zones—including nipple stimulation—more than secondary stimuli? A meta-analysis

Yildiz Karaahmet, Aysu; Karakas, Sevda; Bilgic, Fatma Sule

Objectives: The nipple, a key erogenous zone in female sexual response, is often insufficiently considered in clinical practice, and scientific studies on nipple stimulation are limited. The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies examining the effect of nipple stimulation on sexual response and sexual satisfaction in young women. Methods: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, studies were identified through a search of the PubMed, Cochrane Library, EBSCOhost, Embase, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and Scopus databases without any year restrictions. Results: A total of nine studies (~1276 participants) were included in the systematic review. Of these, six studies (390 intervention, 441 control; n = 831) contributed to the meta-analysis of sexual response/orgasm outcomes, and six studies (655 intervention, 621 control; n = 1276) contributed to the meta-analysis of sexual satisfaction. Nipple stimulation significantly improved sexual response [standardized mean difference (SMD) = 0.51, P < .00001] and sexual satisfaction (SMD = 0.59, P = .005). Discussion: Nipple stimulation may be used as a supportive method to enhance sexual function and sexual satisfaction in young women. It may be considered as a complementary approach to sexual counseling and therapy, particularly for women experiencing sexual aversion, difficulty with arousal, and orgasm problems. This meta-analysis suggests that nipple stimulation may have a moderate positive effect on sexual response and sexual satisfaction in young women; however, the findings should be interpreted with caution due to the limited age range of the included population and the heterogeneity across studies.

Enhancement of bioactive properties and antioxidant activity in wheat chips enriched with purple wheat flour

    Yuksel, Ferhat; Kaya, Şemsettin

The objective of this study was to develop wheat chips fortified with purple wheat flour (PWF) and to evaluate the effects of PWF incorporation, frying temperature, and frying time on starch fractions, bioactive properties, antioxidant activity, and acrylamide formation. Response Surface Methodology was applied to assess the effects of PWF concentration (0%–100%), frying temperature (170–190 °C), and frying time (40–60 s) on the quality and functional properties of wheat chips. Resistant starch ranged from 0.51 to 0.80 g/100 g and increased slightly with higher PWF levels; this increase was found to be statistically significant. Acrylamide content was found to be a statistically significant parameter (p < .05), showing a decreasing trend from 1,362.68 to 1,082.76 μg/kg with increasing levels of PWF incorporation. Total phenolic, flavonoid, anthocyanin, and antioxidant activities (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), free radical scavenging capacity (ABTS)) significantly improved with PWF enrichment, whereas ferric reducing antioxidant power showed no notable change. These findings indicate that PWF can be effectively incorporated into deep-fried wheat chips, enhancing their functional and bioactive properties while reducing acrylamide formation.

Öztürk, Banu; Asan, Abdurrahman; Köse, Dursun Ali; Kalkişim, Ahmet Tahir; Öztürk, Zeynel

Low-cost hydrogen storage systems are essential for the widespread use of hydrogen, particularly in mobile platforms such as unmanned aerial vehicles, to increase their range. Hydrogen storage in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), which offer high capacity through adsorption, is crucial to achieving this goal. This study investigates the hydrogen storage capacity of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), produced via reactive extrusion, which allows for high production capacity and low-cost manufacturing of MOFs. Furthermore, particular attention was given to the storage capacity of ZIF-8 in its as-produced form. An atomistic model of the as-produced ZIF-8, including impurities selected from a series of simulated models containing different amounts of impurity, was developed. The validity of the selected structure was then verified through experimental powder X-ray diffraction and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area measurements. Subsequently, hydrogen adsorption capacities for varying pressures and temperatures were calculated. The hydrogen adsorption simulations indicated that the atomistic model of the as-produced ZIF-8 exhibited a hydrogen storage capacity of 1.76 wt.% at 77 K and 1 bar, corresponding to a BET surface area of 516 m2/g. In comparison, the experimentally synthesized as-produced ZIF-8 showed a capacity of 1.145 wt.% under the same conditions, with a BET surface area of 520 m2/g. The study demonstrates that the gas storage performance of experimentally produced structures, even without further purification, can be accurately determined through simulation models in this semi-experimental study.

Unveiling the bioactive potential of Scabiosa rotata M. Bieb fruits: a landmark study on cytotoxic, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities through liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry profiling and molecular docking

Yildirim, Aybeniz; Celep, Inci Kurt; Gül, Abdulkadir; Eter, Özge Soylu; Baǧcl, Eyüp

The aim of this study was to investigate the antioxidant, cytotoxic, and antibacterial activities of ethanol extract (SRE) and its hexane (SRH), chloroform (SRC), ethyl acetate (SREA), and aqueous ethanol (SRAE) sub-extracts obtained from the fruits of Scabiosa rotata M. Bieb. Molecular docking studies were also performed to evaluate the interactions of the most active sub-extract with the human mitochondrial ABC transporter (ABCB10) protein, plays an important role in cellular oxidative stress regulation and mitochondrial function. Total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid (TFC) contents and antioxidant radical scavenging activities (1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl [DPPH] and 3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6 sulfonic acid [ABTS]) of all extracts were determined. Cytotoxic activity was evaluated on different cell lines, such as HepG2 (liver cancer), MCF-7 (breast cancer), and HeLa (cervical cancer) cells. Antibacterial activity was tested against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, and Staphylococcus aureus. SREA showed the best antioxidant activity with IC50 values of 54.20 μg/ml and 48.56 μg/ml for DPPH and ABTS, respectively, and also had high TPC (499.06 mg GA/g) and TFC (327.45 mg QE/g). Furthermore, SREA showed significant cytotoxicity comparable to cisplatin with IC50 values of 51.29, 51.41, and 52.89 μg/ml for HepG2, MCF-7, and HeLa cells, respectively. However, none of the extracts showed antibacterial activity. The analysis using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS-MS) on SREA found that the main phenolic compounds are chlorogenic acid, hesperidin, quinic acid, and isoorientin. Molecular docking of the major compounds showed that chlorogenic acid (2.21 mM) exhibited the strongest binding affinity, followed by hesperidin (5.83 mM), quinic acid (8.86 mM), and isoorientin (13 mM). These findings indicate the potential of SREA to be used as a natural antioxidant and anticancer agent.

Detection of 2D and 3D Video Transitions Based on EEG Power

Manshouri, Negin; Melek, Mesut; Kaylkcloglu, Temel

Despite the long and extensive history of 3D technology, it has recently attracted the attention of researchers. This technology has become the center of interest of young people because of the real feelings and sensations it creates. People see their environment as 3D because of their eye structure. In this study, it is hypothesized that people lose their perception of depth during sleepy moments and that there is a sudden transition from 3D vision to 2D vision. Regarding these transitions, the EEG signal analysis method was used for deep and comprehensive analysis of 2D and 3D brain signals. In this study, a single-stream anaglyph video of random 2D and 3D segments was prepared. After watching this single video, the obtained EEG recordings were considered for two different analyses: the part involving the critical transition (transition state) and the state analysis of only the 2D versus 3D or 3D versus 2D parts (steady state). The main objective of this study is to see the behavioral changes of brain signals in 2D and 3D transitions. To clarify the impacts of the human brain's power spectral density (PSD) in 2D-to-3D (2D_3D) and 3D-to-2D (3D_2D) transitions of anaglyph video, nine visual healthy individuals were prepared for testing in this pioneering study. Spectrogram graphs based on short time Fourier transform (STFT) were considered to evaluate the power spectrum analysis in each EEG channel of transition or steady state. Thus, in 2D and 3D transition scenarios, important channels representing EEG frequency bands and brain lobes will be identified. To classify the 2D and 3D transitions, the dominant bands and time intervals representing the maximum difference of PSD were selected. Afterward, effective features were selected by applying statistical methods such as standard deviation, maximum (max) and Hjorth parameters to epochs indicating transition intervals. Ultimately, k-nearest neighbors, support vector machine and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) algorithms were applied to classify 2D_3D and 3D_2D transitions. The frontal, temporal and partially parietal lobes show 2D_3D and 3D_2D transitions with a good classification success rate. Overall, it was found that Hjorth parameters and LDA algorithms have 71.11% and 77.78% classification success rates for transition and steady state, respectively.

Sexual health literacy as a predictor of reproductive health and family planning attitudes among university students: a cross-sectional study

Karaahmet, Aysu Yıldız; Bilgiç, Fatma Şule; Karakaş, Sevda

Introduction: This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between sexual health literacy (SHL) and reproductive health and family planning (RHFP) attitudes among university students and to identify the sociodemographic and informational predictors influencing these variables. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional design was employed with a sample of 867 university students aged 18-35 in Türkiye between May and September 2024. Data were collected using a Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the Sexual Health Literacy Scale (SHLS), and the Reproductive Health and Family Planning Attitude Scale (RHFPAS). Data analysis included Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression models to determine predictors and relationships. Results: The findings revealed a strong positive correlation between SHL and RHFP attitudes (r = 0.880, P < .05). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that total SHLS scores and students’ conceptual definitions of sexual health were significant predictors of RHFP attitudes. In particular, the knowledge and attitude subscales of the SHLS were identified as key determinants. Furthermore, residence type, sexual activity status, and information sources were found to significantly influence both SHL levels and RHFP attitudes. Discussion: SHL is a critical determinant in shaping the RHFP attitudes of young adults. Higher literacy levels directly correlate with more positive attitudes toward reproductive health services, suggesting that targeted educational interventions are necessary to improve health outcomes in this population.

Comparison of flow behavior and physicochemical characteristics of low-cholesterol mayonnaises produced with cholesterol-reduced egg yolk

    Yüceer, M.; Ilyasoǧlu, H.; Özçelik, B.

Egg yolk is common functional ingredient in food production, mainly in mayonnaise as an emulsifier. Egg yolk cholesterol was removed using β-cyclodextrine, treated with α-Amylase, and low-cholesterol mayonnaise produced. The flow behavior of cholesterol-reduced mayonnaise was investigated at different cholesterol-reduced egg yolk and xanthan gum content. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different formulations at various percentages of egg yolk (EY; 4 and 6 percent by weight) and xanthan gum (XG; 0.5 and 0.7 percent by weight) on flow behavior and physicochemical properties of reduced-fat and low-cholesterol mayonnaise prepared with cholesterol-reduced liquid egg yolk and to obtain suitable model for mayonnaise formulations. The aim of the study was to develop a reduced-fat and lowcholesterol mayonnaise with properties similar to those of typical mayonnaise in the market. For this purpose, four reduced-fat and low-cholesterol mayonnaise formulations were prepared in the laboratory using cholesterol-reduced EY. They were compared with a commercial mayonnaise from a local market as a control sample. According to results, color parameters and flow behaviors of the samples compared with the control sample indicated that the samples had higher values of lightness and yellowness, and presented lower values of yield stress and flow behavior index and higher values of consistency coefficient with respect to the commercial product, except recipe that included 6% of EY and 0.7% of XG, which exhibited similar values to the typical commercial one in the market. The Herschel Bulkley model was employed in order to evaluate the effect of EY and XG ratios on mayonnaise rheological behavior. In general, the results obtained suggest that the recipe with EY (6 wt%) and XG (0.7 wt%) had better rheological characteristics and physicochemical properties those prepared with various formulations, maintaining the reduced-fat and low-cholesterol mayonnaise prepared with β-cyclodextrine-Treated cholesterol-reduced EY. It can be interpreted that the developed product may have potential use in industrial application.

The Arabidopsis thaliana FASCICLIN LIKE ARABINOGALACTAN PROTEIN 4 gene acts synergistically with abscisic acid signalling to control root growth

Seifert, Georg J.; Acet, Tuba; Xue, Hui

Background and Aims The putative FASCICLIN-LIKE ARABINOGALACTAN PROTEIN 4 (At-FLA4) locus of Arabidopsis thaliana has previously been shown to be required for the normal growth of wild-type roots in response to moderately elevated salinity. However, the genetic and physiological pathway that connects At-FLA4 and normal root growth remains to be elucidated. Methods The radial swelling phenotype of At-fla4 was modulated with growth regulators and their inhibitors. The relationship of At-FLA4 to abscisic acid (ABA) signalling was analysed by probing marker gene expression and the observation of the At-fla4 phenotype in combination with ABA signalling mutants. Key Results Application of ABA suppresses the non-redundant role of At-FLA4 in the salt response. At-FLA4 positively regulates the response to low ABA concentration in roots and is required for the normal expression of ABA-and abiotic stress-induced genes. The At-fla4 phenotype is enhanced in the At-abi4 background, while two genetic suppressors of ABA-induced gene expression are required for salt oversensitivity of At-fla4. Salt oversensitivity in At-fla4 is suppressed by the CYP707A inhibitor abscinazole E2B, and salt oversensitivity in At-fla4 roots is phenocopied by chemical inhibition of ABA biosynthesis. Conclusions The predicted lipid-anchored glycoprotein At-FLA4 positively regulates cell wall biosynthesis and root growth by modulating ABA signalling.
