- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Phenolic Constituents, Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activity and Clustering Analysis of Propolis Samples Based on PCA from Different Regions of Anatolia
Altuntaş, Ümit; Güzel, İsmail; Özçelik, Beraat
This study aimed to evaluate the biochemical composition and biological activity of propolis samples from different regions of Türkiye to characterize and classify 24 Anatolian propolis samples according to their geographical origin. Chemometric techniques, namely, principal component analysis (PCA) and a hierarchical clustering algorithm (HCA), were applied for the first time to all data, including antioxidant capacity, individual phenolic constituents, and the antimicrobial activity of propolis to reveal the possible clustering of Anatolian propolis samples according to their geographical origin. As a result, the total phenolic content (TPC) of the propolis samples varied from 16.73 to 125.83 mg gallic acid equivalent per gram (GAE/g) sample, while the number of total flavonoids varied from 57.98 to 327.38 mg quercetin equivalent per gram (QE/g) sample. The identified constituents of propolis were phenolic/aromatic acids (chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, and trans-cinnamic acid), phenolic aldehyde (vanillin), and flavonoids (pinocembrin, kaempferol, pinobanksin, and apigenin). This study has shown that the application of the PCA chemometric method to the biochemical composition and biological activity of propolis allows for the successful clustering of Anatolian propolis samples from different regions of Türkiye, except for samples from the Black Sea region.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2022The Dual Expression of Parallel Equidistant Ruled Surfaces in Euclidean 3-Space
Gür Mazlum, Sümeyye; Şenyurt, Süleyman; Grilli, Luca
In this study, we examine the dual expression of Valeontis’ concept of parallel p-equidistant ruled surfaces well known in Euclidean 3-space, according to the Study mapping. Furthermore, we show that the dual part of the dual angle on the unit dual sphere corresponds to the p-distance. We call these ruled surfaces we obtained “dual parallel equidistant ruled surfaces” and we briefly denote them with “DPERS”. Furthermore, we find the Blaschke vectors, the Blaschke invariants and the striction curves of these DPERS and we give the relationships between these elements. Moreover, we show the relationships between the Darboux screws, the instantaneous screw axes, the instantaneous dual Pfaff vectors and dual Steiner rotation vectors of these surfaces. Finally, we give an example, which we reinforce this article, and we explain all of these features with the figures on the example. Furthermore, we see that the corresponding dual curves on the dual unit sphere to these DPERS are such that one of them is symmetric with respect to the imaginary symmetry axis of the other.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Determination of Grafting Success and Carbohydrate Distributions of Foxy Grape (Vitis labrusca L.) Varieties Grafted on Different American Grape Rootstocks
Karabulut, Besim; Çelik, Hüseyin
This study aimed to determine the grafting success and carbohydrate distributions for newly registered foxy grape varieties grafted on different American grapes and grown in humid conditions in the Black Sea Region of Turkey. In the study, ‘Rizessi’, ‘Çeliksu’, ‘Ülkemiz’, ‘Rizellim’, and ‘Rizpem’ foxy grape varieties were grafted on 140Ru, SO4, and 110R American rootstocks. The graft success, growth, and development characteristics were determined, and carbohydrate accumulations and distributions at the graft area, under the graft area (rootstock), and above the graft area (scion) of the grafted grapevines in the dormant period were also determined. The highest graft success rate was 100.00% in the combinations of ‘Rizessi’/SO4, ‘Rizellim’/SO4, ‘Rizpem’/SO4, ‘Rizellim’/110R, and ‘Rizpem’/110R. The percentage of vine saplings ranged from 86.00% (‘Rizellim’/SO4) to 27.14% (‘Rizpem’/140Ru). Regarding carbohydrate distribution, the ‘Rizessi’/140Ru, ‘Rizessi’/SO4, ‘Rizessi’/110R, ‘Çeliksu’/SO4, ‘Çeliksu’/110R, ‘Ülkemiz’/SO4, ‘Rizellim’/140Ru, ‘Rizellim’/SO4, ‘Rizpem’/SO4, and ‘Rizpem’/110R combinations showed a balanced distribution. The highest total carbohydrate accumulation (100.41 mg·L−1) was detected in the root region of the ‘Ülkemiz’/SO4 combination. On the other hand, vine sapling rate enhanced as carbohydrate accumulation increased in the grafting area. The SO4 American rootstock was found to be more successful than the others.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Individual Attitudes towards Immigration in Turkey: Evidence from the European Social Survey
Karapınar Kocağ, Esra; Longhi, Simonetta
One of the reasons why people hold anti-immigration attitudes is the fear that immigrants “rob jobs” of natives and decrease wages. However, academic literature finds that this is not the case. Nevertheless, in various countries, people still tend to oppose immigration. Opposition to immigration was particularly high in Turkey in the early 2000s, where almost half of the respondents to the Turkish part of the European Social Survey reported they would prefer to allow no immigrants into Turkey. This is although immigration to Turkey is very low. Turkey is becoming an important destination country as conflicts in neighboring countries force many people to flee. Therefore, understanding the opposition to immigration in Turkey is crucial for managing age immigration flows efficiently. For this purpose, we investigate the determinants of attitudes towards immigration in Turkey using the European Social Survey and Turkish population census data. The findings of the ordered probit model reveal that Turkish people tend to hold more negative attitudes towards immigration where the regional share of immigrants is higher. The little chance of contact with immigrants in Turkey through a lower share of immigrants compared to other European countries seems to influence natives’ pro-immigrant attitudes negatively.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Would You like to Work More Hours?—An Investigation on South Africa
Popescu, Cristina Raluca Gh.; Karapınar Kocağ, Esra
To begin with, Sustainable Development Goals are of tremendous importance in all areas, being seen as vital aims in all domains, which makes them indispensable when it comes to addressing the particularities of the labour market these days. Subsequently, human resources occupy a distinctive and unique position when referring to the implications derived from targeting Sustainable Development Goals, especially in the context represented by the period specific to the COVID-19 pandemic and the international events that followed immediately after that. This study investigates the work motivation of individuals, and whether they would be willing to work more hours if they are paid. Motivation and attitudes towards working more hours might be affected by several factors, and they are important contributors to business performance. Not only business performance is to be affected, but this is also a part of Sustainable Development Goals where labour market conditions and productivity concerns are addressed, along with several other factors. Using the Quarterly Labour Force Survey from 2017 to 2022 that is conducted by Statistics South Africa, this study attempts to shed light on individual preferences for working more hours in the case of South Africa. Considering the dichotomous dependent variable, a binary response model is utilised to explore the determinants of such behaviour. Findings of the probit model reveal that socio-demographic factors such as gender, marital status, education level, and work experience are important indicators to explain this preference. More precisely, being female increases the likelihood of willingness to work more hours if paid by 1.1 percentage points, and being never married increases that probability by 2.7 percentage points. Within education categories, the highest coefficient in magnitude, having tertiary education decreases the probability of willingness to work more hours by 8.2 percentage points. As an important labour market indicator, one more year to commence working increases the probability of willingness to work more hours by 0.4 percentage points.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021A data-driven multi-regime approach for predicting energy consumption
Kahraman, Abdulgani; Kantardzic, Mehmed; Kahraman, Mustafa; Kotan, Muhammed
There has been increasing interest in reducing carbon footprints globally in recent years. Hence increasing share of green energy and energy efficiency are promoted by governments. There-fore, optimizing energy consumption is becoming more critical for people, companies, industries, and the environment. Predicting energy consumption more precisely means that future energy management planning can be more effective. To date, most research papers have focused on predicting residential building energy consumption; however, a large portion of the energy is consumed by industrial machines. Prediction of energy consumption of large industrial machines in real time is challenging due to concept drift, in which prediction performance deteriorates over time. In this research, a novel data-driven method multi-regime approach (MRA) was developed to better predict the energy consumption for industrial machines. Whereas most papers have focused on finding an excellent prediction model that contradicts the no-free-lunch theorem, this study concentrated on adding potential concept drift points into the prediction process. A real-world dataset was collected from a semi-autonomous grinding (SAG) mill used as a data source, and a deep neural network was utilized as a prediction model for the MRA method. The results proved that the MRA method enables the detection of multi-regimes over time and provides a highly accurate prediction performance, thanks to the dynamic model approach.

Kinkor (Ferulago stellata) is Turkish medicinal plant species and used in folk medicine against some diseases. As far as we know, the data are not available on the biological activities and chemical composition of this medicinal plant. In this study, the phytochemical composition; some metabolic enzyme inhibition; and antidiabetic, anticholinergic, and antioxidant activities of this plant were assessed. In order to evaluate the antioxidant activity of evaporated ethanolic extract (EEFS) and lyophilized water extract (WEFS) of kinkor (Ferulago stellata), some putative antioxidant methods such as DPPHGreek ano teleia scavenging activity, ABTS(center dot+) scavenging activity, ferric ions (Fe3+) reduction method, cupric ions (Cu2+) reducing capacity, and ferrous ions (Fe2+)-binding activities were separately performed. Furthermore, ascorbic acid, BHT, and alpha-tocopherol were used as the standard compounds. Additionally, the main phenolic compounds that are responsible for antioxidant abilities of ethanol and water extracts of kinkor (Ferulago stellata) were determined by liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS). Ethanol and water extracts of kinkor (Ferulago stellata) demonstrated effective antioxidant abilities when compared to standards. Moreover, ethanol extract of kinkor (Ferulago stellata) demonstrated IC50 values of 1.772 mu g/mL against acetylcholinesterase (AChE), 33.56 +/- 2.96 mu g/mL against alpha-glycosidase, and 0.639 mu g/mL against alpha-amylase enzyme respectively.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Non-Invasive Monitoring of Ethanol and Methanol Levels in Grape-Derived Pisco Distillate by Vibrational Spectroscopy
Menevseoglu, Ahmed; Aykas, Didem P.; Hatta-Sakoda, Beatriz; Toledo-Herrera, Victor Hugo; Rodriguez-Saona, Luis E.
Handheld Raman and portable FT-IR spectroscopy devices were evaluated for fast and non-invasive determination of methanol and ethanol levels in Peruvian Pisco. Commercial Peruvian Pisco (n = 171) samples were kindly provided by the UNALM Alliance for Research in Alcohol and its Derivatives (Lima, Peru) and supplemented by purchases at grocery and online stores. Pisco spectra were collected on handheld Raman spectrometers equipped with either a 1064 nm or a 785 nm excitation laser and a portable infrared unit operating in transmission mode. The alcohol levels were determined by GC-MS. Calibration models used partial least-squares regression (PLSR) to develop prediction algorithms. GC-MS data revealed that 10% of Pisco samples had ethanol levels lower than 38%, indicating possible water dilution. Methanol levels ranged from 10 to 130 mg/100 mL, well below the maximum levels allowed for fruit brandies. Handheld Raman equipped with a 1064 nm excitation laser gave the best results for determining ethanol (SEP = 1.2%; RPre = 0.95) and methanol (SEP = 1.8 mg/100 mL; RPre = 0.93). Randomly selected Pisco samples were spiked with methanol (75 to 2800 mg/100 mL), and their Raman spectra were collected through their genuine commercial bottles. The prediction models gave an excellent performance (SEP = 98 mg/100 mL; RPre = 0.97), allowing for the non-destructive and non-contact determination of methanol and ethanol concentrations without opening the bottles.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2020The effect of shape-controlled pt and pd nanoparticles on selective catalytic hydrodechlorination of trichloroethylene
Sarıbıyık, Oğuz Yunus; Rupprechter, Günther; Weilach, Christian; Serin, Selahattin
Tailoring the shape of nanoscale materials enables obtaining morphology-controlled surfaces exhibiting specific interactions with reactants during catalytic reactions. The specifics of nanoparticle surfaces control the catalytic performance, i.e., activity and selectivity. In this study, shape-controlled Platinum (Pt) and Palladium (Pd) nanoparticles with distinct morphology were produced, i.e., cubes and cuboctahedra for Pt and spheres and polyhedra/multiple-twins for Pd, with (100), (111 + 100), curved/stepped and (111) facets, respectively. These particles with well-tuned surfaces were subsequently deposited on a Zirconium oxide (ZrO2 ) support. The morphological characteristics of the particles were determined by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), while their adsorption properties were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) of CO adsorbed at room temperature. The effect of the nanoparticle shape and surface structure on the catalytic performance in hydrodechlorination (HDCl) of trichloroethylene (TCE) was examined. The results show that nanoparticles with different surface orientations can be employed to affect selectivity, with polyhedral and multiply-twinned Pd exhibiting the best ethylene selectivity.
