Bioactive properties of vinegars produced from prunus laurocerasus L. varieties

Yilmaz, Kubra; Baltaci, Cemalettin; Ozturk, Seyda; Karpuz, Omer

BACKGROUND: Cherry laurel fruit (CLF) has distinctive bioactive properties, which may yield new food products based on CLF. OBJECTIVE: This research aimed to realize the production of vinegar from the CLF, thus, valorizing the CLF, which is rich in antioxidants and phenolic substances, and bringing a new nutrient-rich vinegar to the market. METHODS: Seven types of traditional CLF vinegar (CLFV) from three different species were produced, and their bioactive properties were examined. The bioactivity analyses of total phenolic substance (TPC), total flavonoid (TFC), total antioxidant activity (AA), DPPH (Free radical scavenging activity), FRAP (Ferric reducing antioxidant power), ABTS + (Radical cation scavenging effect) were conducted. In addition, the composition of phenolic substances was studied. RESULTS: This study showed that CLFV performed better than controls regarding antioxidant activity, phenolic compounds, and substances. The presence of intense phenolic elements in CLFV significantly impacts its antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activities of CLFV were detected to be greater than the previous reports on bioactivities of vinegar from various fruits. CONCLUSIONS: High antioxidant and phenolic content were observed in CLFV, similar to the composition of the CLF. The usability of CLFV as a healthy and nutritious food product seems achievable on an industrial scale.

Determining the musculoskeletal problems of academicians who transitioned to distance education during the COVID-19 pandemic

Yorulmaz, Deniz S.; Karadeniz, Havva; Duran, Seçil; Çelik, İsa

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders are a significant public health issue that negatively affects individuals and society both socially and economically, and increases the cost of care and cure. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the musculoskeletal problems and risk factors of academicians who transitioned to provide distance education during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: The population of this descriptive cross-sectional study included academicians who worked in two public universities in Turkey. Ethical committee approval and institutional permissions were obtained between 1 and 28 February 2021. Data were collected using a personal information form, the Work Environment Evaluation Questionnaire, and the Musculoskeletal Pain Intensity Assessment Questionnaire. The data were analyzed using the number, percentage, independent group t-test, ANOVA test, and linear regression analysis (forward method). The analysis was interpreted at the 95% confidence level and 0.05 error margin. RESULTS: Of the academicians, 78% were women, 54.6% were married, 80.6% did not regularly exercise, and 73.5% had more workload during the distance education period. Academicians mostly experienced discomfort about their eyes, necks, and waists, and an increase at a significant level was detected in their musculoskeletal system problems during the distance education period. Increasing workload, duration of mobile phone use, active time, having an ergonomic chair, and gender predicted the musculoskeletal system pain intensity by 20%. CONCLUSION: Musculoskeletal system problems are a significant public health issue. Academicians should be informed and consulted for the protection of musculoskeletal system health during the distance education period.

The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the professional perception and image of nursing among nurses working in surgical units: An online study

    Sayilan, Aylin Aydin; Kulakac, Nursen

BACKGROUND: Understanding the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the perception and image of the profession are key factors in nurses' perceptions regarding their roles and their future. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the perception and image of the nursing profession among nurses working in surgical units. METHODS: This cross-sectional, correlational study was conducted with 216 nurses using the random sampling method between 10 and 30 March, 2022. The study data were collected using an information form, the Perception of Nursing Professional Scale (PNPS), and the Scale for the Image of the Nursing Profession. RESULTS: The nurses' mean age was 32.53±9.16 years (min 21, max 57) and their mean professional experience was 16.44±9.80 years (min 1, max 44). The mean PNPS score was 73.12±9.46, and the mean Scale for the Image of the Nursing Profession score was 171.11±11.16. Female nurses had significantly higher positive perceptions of nursing levels than male nurses. Gender, having a history of COVID-19, marginalization during the pandemic, and perception of the nursing profession significantly affected image perceptions of nursing at multiple linear regression analysis. These variables explained 43% of the total variance. CONCLUSION: Nurses working in surgical units during the COVID-19 pandemic exhibited a good level of professionalism and image perception concerning nursing.
