Manay, Eyuphan; Akyürek, Eda Feyza; Sahin, Bayram
Present study aims to investigate the effects of the presence of nano sized TiO2 particles in the base fluid on entropy generation rate in a microchannel heat sink. Pure water was chosen as base fluid, and TiO2 particles were suspended into the pure water in five different particle volume fractions of 0.25%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0%. Under laminar, steady state flow and constant heat flux boundary conditions, thermal, frictional, total entropy generation rates and entropy generation number ratios of nanofluids were experimentally analyzed in microchannel flow for different channel heights of 200 mm, 300 mm, 400 mm and 500 mm. It was observed that frictional and total entropy generation rates increased as thermal entropy generation rate were decreasing with an increase in particle volume fraction. In microchannel flows, thermal entropy generation could be neglected due to its too low rate smaller than 1.10e-07 in total entropy generation. Higher channel heights caused higher thermal entropy generation rates, and increasing channel height yielded an increase from 30% to 52% in thermal entropy generation. When channel height decreased, an increase of 66%-98% in frictional entropy generation was obtained. Adding TiO2 nanoparticles into the base fluid caused thermal entropy generation to decrease about 1.8%-32.4%, frictional entropy generation to increase about 3.3%-21.6%. (C) 2018 The Authors. Dokuz, Abdurrahman; Külekçi, Elif; Aydinçakir, Emre; Kandemir, Raif; Alçiçek, M. Cihat; Pecha, Mark E.; Sünnetçi, Kadir
The Cebre Rhyolite with an outcropping area up to 12 km(2) is one of the rare extrusions in the Variscan basement of the Sakarya Zone. The unit consists of high-K calc alkaline rhyolites (SiO2 = 74-82 wt.%). Abundant phenocrysts of quartz and K-feldspar are accompanied by subordinate cordierite phenocrysts, rare muscovite microphenocrysts and biotite microcrysts set in a fine-grained groundmass. Three types of rock fragments (xenoliths) have been recognized; (i) porphyritic, (ii) equigranular hypabyssal and (iii) hypocrystalline fragments. Zircon U-Pb dating indicates that the Cebre Rhyolite was extruded at 332.8 +/- 4.38 Ma, which post-dates the Variscan low temperature metamorphism and pre-dates the emplacement of I-type granitic intrusions (325-303 Ma).The samples are strongly peraluminous with A/CNK values ranging from 1.48 to 2.95 and A/NK from 1.49 to 2.99. They have very high K2O (3.72-7.42 wt.%) and Al2O3 (10.77-14.11 wt.%) contents, but very low CaO (0.02-0.21 wt.%), Na2O (0.05-0.78 wt.%) and MgO (0.3-0.21 wt.%) contents. The samples show geochemical affinity with the upper continental crust, e.g., enrichment of large ion lithophile elements (LILEs; K, Rb, U, Th, Pb), depletion of high field strength elements (HFSEs; Nb, Ta, Ti), Sr, P and Eu, but epsilon Nd-(t) values (- 3.06 to - 8.75) and isotope ratios of Sr-(t)((87) Sr/Sr-86 = 0.70499-0.70915) and Pb-(t) (Pb-206/Pb-204 = 16.41-17.570, Pb-207/Pb-204 = 15.54-15.59, Pb-208/Pb-204 = 36.20-37.22) are similar to those of the lower crust. Geochemical and isotope data indicate that the Cebre Rhyolite was generated by melting of metapelitic rocks with some addition of intermediate metaigneous derived magma. As a geodynamic model, we propose that the Variscan Orogeny in Turkey was occurred by collision of Gondwana with an arc/terrane separated from the southern margin of Laurussia. This collision was followed shortly after by splitting of oceanic lithosphere into two pieces and sinking down into asthenosphere. Rapid upwelling of asthenosphere to space emptied by previous oceanic lithosphere provided heat for high temperature metamorphism and anatexis of metasedimentary rocks in the crust. The Eastern Pontides Orogenic Belt represents one of the best examples of fossil convergent margins in the eastern Mediterranean region. However, the origin and geodynamic setting of the late Mesozoic-Cenozoic magmatism in this belt remain controversial due to lack of systematic geological, geochemical and chronological data. The general consensus is that the late Mesozoic-Cenozoic igneous activity is related to northward subduction of oceanic lithosphere in the late Mesozoic and following collision between Tauride and Pontide blocks in the early Cenozoic Here we present a comprehensive study focusing on the origin and geodynamic setting of gabbro bodies exposed along a narrow zone, parallel to the southeastern coast of the eastern Black Sea basin, in the Northern Zone of the Eastern Pontides Orogenic Belt. The studied gabbro bodies are hosted within late Cretaceous basaltic, andesitic, and dacitic volcanics including pyroclastic rocks and interbedded sedimentary rocks. The gabbro bodies range in size from 0.1 km(2) to 1.5 km(2), and outcrop patterns vary from round or elliptical to markedly elongate with sharp and discordant contact with the host rocks. Their mineral assemblage includes mainly clinopyroxene, plagioclase, minor olivine, amphibole, magnetite and rarely orthopyroxene, biotite, zircon and titanite. The occurrence of sutured grain boundaries on clinopyroxene and plagioclase, and the presence of reverse compositional zoning in clinopyroxene and olivine suggest mixing between magmas of contrasting compositions during mineral growth. Thermobarometric computations indicate that the temperature at the beginning of crystallization was similar to 1250 degrees C and crystallization was polybaric Zircon and titanite U-Pb ages indicate that these small intrusions were emplaced into crustal rocks of the Eastern Pontides Orogenic Belt during Lutetian (45 +/- 2 Ma). The depletion of HFSE is consistent with the involvement of an arc-related source in the petrogenesis of these rocks, and low to moderate enrichment Ce, Rb, Ba, K, Pb, Sr and Th suggests that involvement of subducted oceanic sediment was modest. The low Th content and low Th/Yb indicate that the role of sediment addition was nevertheless limited. The Nd, Sr and Pb isotopic data are consistent with the interpretation that the dominant source component in these gabbros is a depleted, peridotitic mantle, and that crustal contamination is relatively unimportant. We suggest that mafic magmas that produced the gabbroic intrusions were derived from melting of a depleted mantle source under the forearc region of the Eastern Pontides Orogenic Belt during southward subduction of two oceanic plates separated by a mid-ocean ridge, leading to the formation of a slab window. We also infer fractional crystallization and assimilation during both magma storage in the crust-mantle transition zone and transfer into the overlying arc crust. Background: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a highly heritable mental illness which is associated with neuroanatomical abnormalities. Investigating healthy individuals at high genetic risk for bipolar disorder may help to identify neuroanatomical markers of risk and resilience without the confounding effects of burden of illness or medication. Methods: Structural magnetic resonance imaging scans were acquired from 30 euthymic patients with BD-1 (BP), 28 healthy first degree relatives of BD-I patients (HR), and 30 healthy controls (HC). Data was analyzed using DARTEL for voxel based morphometry in SPM8. Results: Whole-brain analysis revealed a significant main effect of group in the gray matter volume in bilateral inferior frontal gyrus, left parahippocampal gyrus, left lingual gyrus and cerebellum, posterior cingulate gyrus, and supramarginal gyrus (alphasim corrected (<= 0.05 FWE)). Post-hoc t-tests showed that inferior frontal gyrus volumes were bilaterally larger both in BP and HR than in HC. BP and HR also had smaller cerebellar volume compared with HC. In addition, BP had smaller left lingual gyms volume, whereas HR had larger left parahippocampal and supramarginal gyms volume compared with HC. Limitations: This study was cross-sectional and the sample size was not large. All bipolar patients were on medication, therefore we were not able to exclude medication effects in bipolar group in this study. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that increased inferior frontal gyms and decreased cerebellar volumes might be associated with genetic predisposition for bipolar disorder. Longitudinal studies are needed to better understand the predictive and prognostic value of structural changes in these regions. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper presents the strength (UCS) and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) properties of cemented paste backfill (CPB) produced from two different mill tailings (Tailings T1 and T2). A total of 240 CPB samples with diameter × height of 5 × 10 cm and 10 × 20 cm prepared at different binder dosages (5-7 wt.%) and water-to-cement ratios (3.97-5.10) were subjected to the UPV and UCS tests at 7, 14, 28 and 56-days of curing periods. UCS and UPV of CPB samples increased with increasing the binder dosage and reducing the w/c ratio irrespective of the sample size and tailings type. CPB samples with a diameter × height of 5 × 10 cm were observed to produce consistently higher (up to 1.69-fold) UCSs than those of 10 × 20 cm CPB samples at all binder dosages and w/c ratios. However, at the corresponding binder dosages and w/c ratios, the maximum variation of UPV between the CPB samples of 5 × 10 cm and 10 × 20 cm was only 7.45%. Using the method of least squares regression, the UCS values were correlated with the UPV values for CPB samples of 10 × 20 cm in size. A linear relation with a high correlation coefficient appeared to exist between the UCS and UPV for CPB samples. These findings suggest that the UPV is essentially independent of the sample size. In this regard, the UPV test can be suitably exploited for the rapid estimation of the strength and quality of CPB samples even using small samples with concomitant benefits of reducing sample size.

Aims of this study were to isolate endophytes from different parts of hazelnut - Corylus avellana L. to obtain bioactive secondary metabolites and search for the presence of gene region of taxadiene synthase (Ts), a key enzyme in taxol biosynthesis, on selected fungi. Fourteen fungal species were isolated and cultured for the screening studies. The cell-free fermentation broths were extracted with chloroform. The chloroform extracts were tested for cytotoxic activity by MTT method. Based on the activity results and chemical profiles, the isolate identified as Phomopsis amygdali by internal transcribed spaces (ITS) sequence analysis using ITS1 primer was selected for further studies. After large-scale fermentation and purification studies, two major compounds, one of which turned out to be a new secondary metabolite, were isolated and characterized. Structure of the new metabolite was elucidated as (S)-4-butoxy-6-((S)-1-hydroxypentyl)-5,6-dihydro-2H-pyran-2-one by the extensive use of 1D and 2D NMR, and HR-MS, whereas the known compound was identified as (-)pestalotin. Additionally, to evaluate taxol-producing potential of the selected isolate, a PCR amplification study followed by gel electrophoresis analysis was carried out revealing no Ts gene region.
- MakaleYalnız künye2014The Eastern Black Sea-type volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits: Geochemistry, zircon U-Pb geochronology and an overview of the geodynamics of ore genesis
Eyuboglu, Yener; Santosh, M.; Yi, Keewook; Tuysuz, Necati; Korkmaz, Sadettin; Akaryali, Enver; Dudas, Francis O.; Bektas, Osman
The Meso-Cenozoic geodynamic evolution of the eastern Pontides orogenic belt provides a key to evaluate the volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits associated with convergent margin tectonics in a Cordilleran-type orogenic belt. Here we present new geological, geochemical and zircon U-Pb geochronological data, and attempt to characterize the metallogeny through a comprehensive overview of the important VMS mineralizations in the belt. The VMS deposits in the northern part of the eastern Pontides orogenic belt occur in two different stratigraphic horizons consisting mainly of felsic volcanic rocks within the late Cretaceous sequence. SHRIMP zircon U-Pb analyses from ore-bearing dacites yield weighted mean Pb-206/U-238 ages ranging between 91.1 +/- 1.3 and 82.6 +/- 1 Ma. The felsic rocks of first and second horizons reveal geochemical characteristics of subduction-related calc-alkaline and shoshonitic magmas, respectively, in continental arcs and represent the immature and mature stages of a late Cretaceous magmatic arc. The nature of the late Cretaceous magmatism in the northern part of the eastern Pontides orogenic belt and the various lithological associations including volcaniclastics, mudstones and sedimentary facies indicate a rift-related environment where dacitic volcanism was predominant. The eastern Pontides VMS deposits are located within the caldera-like depressions and are closely associated with dome-like structures of felsic magmas, with their distribution controlled by fracture systems. Based on a detailed analyses of the geological, geophysical and geodynamic information, we propose that the VMS deposits were generated either in intra arc or near arc region of the eastern Pontides orogenic belt during the southward subduction of the Tethys oceanic lithosphere. - MakaleYalnız künye2013Petrogenesis of the post-collisional volcanic rocks from the Borçka (Artvin) area: Implications for the evolution of the Eocene magmatism in the Eastern Pontides (NE Turkey)
Aydinçakir, Emre; Sen, Cüneyt
Whole-rock geochemistry, 40Ar-39Ar data, and Sr-Nd isotopes are presented for the Eocene Borçka volcanic rocks on the eastern corner of the eastern Pontide orogenic belt (NE Turkey). Borçka (Artvin) volcanic rocks are divided into three suites-basic dyke, Borçka basalt, and Civanköy suite. These rocks contain plagioclase (An49-88), clinopyroxene (Wo38-49En38-54Fs8-25), hornblende (Mg#=0.57-0.74) phenocrysts, and magnetite/titanomagnetite and apatite microphenocrysts. 40Ar-39Ar ages on hornblendes, ranging from 46.9±0.1 to 39.9±0.5Ma, within the middle Eocene. The volcanic rocks show tholeiitic-calc-alkaline affinities and have low-to-medium K contents. They are enriched in large ion lithophile (LILE) and light rare earth elements (LREE), with pronounced depleted high field strength elements (HFSE). The chondrite-normalized REE patterns (Lacn/Lucn=1-19) show low-to-medium enrichment, indicating similar sources for the rock suite. Initial 87Sr/86Sr values [(87Sr/86Sr)46Ma] vary between 0.70423 and 0.70495, while initial 143Nd/144Nd values [(143Nd/144Nd)46Ma] lie between 0.51263 and 0.51285. The main solidification processes involved in the evolution of the volcanics consist of fractional crystallization, with minor amounts of crustal contamination. All our evidences support the conclusion that the parental magma of the rocks probably derived from an enriched mantle, previously metasomatized by fluids derived from subducted slab, in a post-collisional, extension-related geodynamic setting.
- MakaleYalnız künye2013Petrogenesis and U-Pb zircon chronology of adakitic porphyries within the Kop ultramafic massif (Eastern Pontides Orogenic Belt, NE Turkey)
Eyuboglu, Yener; Dudas, Francis O.; Santosh, M.; Yi, Keewook; Kwon, Sanghoon; Akaryali, Enver
High-silica adakites intrude the Kop ultramafic massif in the eastern Pontide orogenic belt of NE Turkey. These dominantly dacitic to rhyodacitic plagioclase porphyries form clusters of small intrusions. U-Pb dating of zircons from two intrusions yields ages between 52 and 59 Ma. The best-constrained crystallization age is 55.83 +/- 0.04 Ma, indicating that these are the oldest adakitic rocks of the eastern Pontides. The rocks show geochemical signatures typical of adakites. The absence of systematic geochemical variation within the adakite suite indicates a subordinate role for fractional crystallization and binary mixing, and suggests that individual intrusions may represent separate, small batches of magma. Modeling of partial melting suggests that the degree of melting was 5-20%, that the residues after melting likely contained garnet, clinopyroxene, and rutile, and that plagioclase was either absent or totally consumed during partial melting. The most likely source compositions had large-ion lithophile elements >10 times, and heavy rare earth elements <10 times, chondritic concentrations. Modeled bulk distribution coefficients indicate that the adakites were generated as silicic magmas, and are not derived by fractional crystallization from basaltic or andesitic parental melts. Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopic data indicate at least three isotopically distinct sources, one of which is depleted mantle. The other components include upper crust (possibly a mixture of subducted sediment and Hercynian continental basement rocks) and a component that may include both lower crust and sublithospheric mantle. These adakites are unique among the late Cretaceous and Cenozoic igneous rocks of the eastern Pontides in having a large proportion of the depleted mantle component. The prominent role of the depleted mantle in their petrogenesis suggests that the adakites may be related to a slab window in a south-directed subduction zone. The Eastern Pontides is characterized by the many of intrusive bodies formed throughout the late Mesozoic-early Cenozoic. Most of these are I-type granitoids, but here, we present for the first time an A-type pluton from the region to assess source characteristics and geodynamic implications. The A-type Pirnalli pluton has a SHRIMP zircon U-Pb age of 81.2±1Ma. It is composed of granite, syenite and quartz monzonite, and its enclaves are monzonitic in composition with elevated Ga/Al ratios and low Mg# (<42). The pluton is dominantly metaluminous (A/CNK=0.88 to 1.00) and belong to shoshonitic and ultra-potassic series. The samples are highly enriched in LREE and show significant negative Eu (Eu/Eu *=0.33 to 0.92), Ba, Nb, Sr and Ti anomalies in the spidergrams. The host rocks and their enclaves posses quite similar Sr-Nd isotopic compositions (I Sr=0.70693 to 0.70736, ε Nd (81Ma)=-2.6 to -2.0, T DM=0.94 to 1.12Ga), pointing to a lower crustal parental magma with a minor contribution of lithospheric mantle. We hypothesize that upwelling of asthenosphere triggered melting of chemically enriched upper mantle and basic magma formed. Melting of lower crust was provided by the underplating of this basic magma. Mixing between lower crust- and mantle-derived melts at depths of lower crust appears to be most reasonable petrogenetic process responsible for generation of the pluton. Sr-Nd isotope modeling suggests mixing of 82-90% of the lower crustal-derived melt with ~10-18% of the mantle-derived melt. Then the hybrid melt ascended to shallower crustal level and underwent a limited fractionation process to generate a variety of rock types. Our data also suggest that the A-type Pirnalli pluton likely formed at an extensional environment of active continental margin throughout the late Cretaceous. Ongoing extension then led to opening of Black Sea as a back-arc basin further north of the Eastern Pontides.
- MakaleYalnız künye2012Effect of detector collimation on the measured mass attenuation coefficients of some elements for 59.5-661.6 keV gamma-rays
Çelik, Necati; Çevik, Ugur; Çelik, Ahmet
Mass attenuation coefficients were determined experimentally for Sc, Ni and W for gamma energies of 59.5, 122, 276, 302, 356, 383 and 662 keV for different detector collimator diameters ranging from 2 to 10 mm. The aim was to investigate the quantitative analysis of detector collimator diameter effect on measured mass attenuation coefficients. It was found that measured mass attenuation coefficients decrease systematically with the increasing collimator diameter. The relative difference was found to be up to around 3% in some cases. The observed decrease in mass attenuation coefficients was attributed to the detection of elastic and inelastic scattered photons from the absorber. In elastic scattering process the photons change in direction but not in energy and get counted under the full energy peak if they reach the detector. In inelastic scattering however, both direction and energy of the scattered photons change. It was seen that most of the inelastic scattered photons also get counted by the detection system since they lose an amount of energy lower than the energy resolution of the detector. It is understood from the present results that it is essential to take into account the experimental geometry when reporting mass attenuation coefficients.
- MakaleYalnız künye2012Soil geochemical prospection for gold deposit in the Arzular area (NE Turkey)
Yaylali-Abanuz, Gülten; Tüysüz, Necati; Akaryali, Enver
The Arzular gold mineralization is located at the southern part of the Black Sea Tectonic Unit in northern Turkey. This belt hosts several high-potential epithermal gold deposits and it is highly probable that there are a number of undiscovered occurrences in the region. The presence of intensely altered areas, suitable structural elements and acidic intrusions indicates that the region has an important potential for epithermal gold. Soil geochemistry surveys are widely used for the exploration of buried mineral deposits. In this work the applicability of soil geochemistry surveys for exploration of buried mineral deposits was tested using various statistical methods. In this respect, concentrations of 16 elements have been assayed in about 50 soil samples collected from the Arzular area. Soil samples were taken from the B horizon. The data revealed elevated concentrations for gold (0.20-259.2 μg/kg), silver (23-26,972 μg/kg), arsenic (1.7-301.8. mg/kg), copper (54.09-170.7. mg/kg), zinc (5.1-261.3. mg/kg) and lead (2.6-385.45. mg/kg). Gold is significantly correlated with elements such as Sb, Cd, Pb, Ag, As, Cu and Mo. Relatively high anomaly contrasts between Au, As, Ag and Sb and their coinciding anomalies along an E-W trending fault at the eastern part of the field might indicate that As, Ag and Sb could be used as a pathfinder element for exploration of gold deposits. Factor analysis was applied to elements in soil samples and then distribution diagrams were prepared using the factor scores obtained. In a distribution diagram for mineralization-associated factor score, two anomaly fields along the E-W trending fracture line and one anomaly field at the eastern part were distinguished. The largest anomaly in an ellipsoidal shape with long axis of 350. m was obtained from the southeast part of the area. Anomaly patterns show that factor scores might yield suitable and net results for the exploration. NE-SW trending fracture system is not related to mineralization and is younger than E-W trending fracture line. However, the E-W trending fault system controls the mineralization; therefore, the eastern extent of this fault zone needs to be investigated.
- MakaleYalnız künye2012Coexistence of abyssal and ultra-depleted SSZ type mantle peridotites in a Neo-Tethyan Ophiolite in SW Turkey: Constraints from mineral composition, whole-rock geochemistry (major-trace-REE-PGE), and Re-Os isotope systematics
Uysal, Ibrahim; Ersoy, E. Yalcin; Karsli, Orhan; Dilek, Yildirim; Sadiklar, M. Burhan; Ottley, Chris J.; Tiepolo, Massimo; Meisel, Thomas
We present new, whole-rock major and trace element chemistry, including rare earth elements (REE), platinum-group elements (PGE), and Re-Os isotope data from the upper mantle peridotites of a Cretaceous Neo-Tethyan ophiolite in the Mugla area in SW Turkey. We also report extensive mineral chemistry data for these peridotites in order to better constrain their petrogenesis and tectonic environment of formation. The Mugla peridotites consist mainly of cpx-harzburgite, depleted harzburgite, and dunite. Cpx-harzburgites are characterized by their higher average CaO (2.27 wt.%), Al2O3 (2.07 wt.%), REE (53 ppb), and Os-187/Os-188((i)) ratios varying between 0.12497 and 0.12858. They contain Al-rich pyroxene with lower Cr content of coexisting spinel (Cr# = 13-22). In contrast, the depleted harzburgites and dunites are characterized by their lower average CaO (0.58 wt.%), Al2O3 (0.42 wt.%), and REE (1.24 ppb) values. Their clinopyroxenes are Al-poor and coexist with high-Cr spinel (Cr# = 33-83). The Os-187/Os-188((i)) ratios are in the range of 0.12078-0.12588 and are more unradiogenic compared to those of the cpx-harzburgites. Mineral chemistry and whole rock trace and PGE data indicate that formation of the Mugla peridotites cannot be explained by a single stage melting event; at least two-stages of melting and refertilization processes are needed to explain their geochemical characteristics. Trace element compositions of the cpx-harzburgites can be modeled by up to similar to 10-16% closed-system dynamic melting of a primitive mantle source, whereas those of the depleted harzburgites and dunites can be reproduced by similar to 10-16% open-system melting of an already depleted (similar to 16%) mantle. These models indicate that the cpx-harzburgites are the products of first-stage melting and low-degrees of melt-rock interaction that occurred in a mid-ocean ridge (MOR) environment. However, the depleted harzburgites and dunites are the product of second-stage melting and related refertilization which took place in a supra subduction zone (SSZ) environment. The Re-Os isotope systematics of the Mugla peridotites gives model age clusters of similar to 250 Ma, similar to 400 Ma and similar to 750 Ma that may record major tectonic events associated with the geodynamic evolution of the Neo-Tethyan. Rheic, and Proto-Tethyan oceans, respectively. Furthermore, >1000 Ma model ages can be interpreted as a result of an ancient melting event before the Proto-Tethys evolution. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. - MakaleYalnız künye2012Combination of culture-dependent and culture-independent molecular methods for the determination of lactic microbiota in sucuk
Kesmen, Z.; Yetiman, A. E.; Gulluce, A.; Kacmaz, N.; Sagdic, O.; Cetin, B.; Adiguzel, A.; Sahin, F.; Yetim, H.
In this study, the culture-dependent and culture-independent molecular methods were used for the identification of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in sucuk a Turkish fermented dry sausage. On the one hand, the PCR-DGGE method targetting the V1 and V3 regions of 16S DNA was applied to DNA that was directly extracted from sucuk samples. On the other hand, rep-PCR fingerprinting was performed for the primary differentiation and grouping of the isolates, and the results were confirmed by sequencing of the 165 rDNA and 16S-23S rDNA intergenic spacer region. As a result of the PCR-DGGE analysis of all the samples, total 8 different lactic acid bacteria were identified, and Lactobacillus sakei, Lactobacillus curvatus and Weissella viridescens were the dominant microbiota among these bacteria. The culture-dependent approach indicated that the majority of the strains belonged to the Lactobacillus genera including Lb. sakei, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lb. curvatus, Lactobacillus brevis, Lactobacillus farciminis and Lactobacillus alimentarius. However, Leuconostoc and Weisella were also detected as minor genera. Again, Lactococcus piscium, Weissella halotolerans, Staphylococcus succinus and the comigrated Staphylococcus piscifermentans/Staphylococcus condimenti/Staphylococcus camosus group were detected only with the culture-independent method while Lb. plantarum, Leuconostoc mesenteroides and Leuconostoc citreum were identified only by using the culture-dependent method. In the results, it was concluded that the combination of culture-dependent and culture-independent methods was necessary for reliable and detailed investigation of LAB communities in fermented food products. The focus of this paper is to illustrate the importance of model calibration and in situ vibration testing by comparing the finite element model predictions of the earthquake response of the two historical arch bridges, Osmanli and Senyuva, before and after model calibration. The three-dimensional finite element models of these two arch bridges, built in the ANSYS finite element program, are used to predict bridge dynamic characteristics, such as natural frequencies and mode shapes. Following the analytical study, ambient vibration tests were conducted to experimentally obtain dynamic characteristics of these two bridges. During ambient vibration tests, accelerometers were placed at several points on the bridge to collect the vibration response due to natural and operational excitation sources. Enhanced frequency domain decomposition and stochastic subspace identification techniques were used to extract the experimental natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios. Finite element models of the two arch bridges were adjusted such that the model predictions reproduce the ambient vibration test results with increased fidelity. The behavior of the masonry arch bridges under earthquake excitation recorded during the Erzincan Earthquake in 1992 is simulated by both the initial and adjusted finite element models. The findings of this study emphasize the importance of model calibration and ambient vibration testing. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Dede, Tayfun; Bekiroglu, Serkan; Ayvaz, Yusuf
This study is concerned with encoding types such as value encoding and binary encoding for continuous and discrete optimization with a GA, which is coded in FORTRAN and considers stress and displacement constraints, in view of weight minimization of truss structures. Moreover, when continuous optimization is performed, the challenge of huge search space due to the effort of considering continuous set of design variables is overcame by a mechanism introduced as restricted range approach (RRA) in this study. In comparison with the literature, it is concluded that the program developed in this study can be effectively used in the weight minimization of truss structures. It is also came to the conclusion that value encoding overcomes the adverse effects of Hamming-cliff, and that value encoding requires less computer memory and time, never destroys the fit chromosome. This paper investigates the effects of finite element model updating on nonlinear seismic response of arch dam-reservoir-foundation systems. The highest arch dam in Turkey named Berke is selected for the numerical and experimental applications. Firstly, 3D finite element model of Berke Dam was constituted using an ANSYS software. In the analytical modeling, arch dam-reservoir-foundation interaction is represented by Lagrangian approach. Then ambient vibration tests were conducted to dam for four days, and experimental dynamic characteristics were estimated using an Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition technique. Experimental characteristics are compared with those of analytical obtained by the linear finite element analysis of the coupled system. Good agreement between mode shapes is observed during this comparison, though natural frequencies disagree by 15-20%. The linear finite element model of Berke Dam was updated by adjusting the material properties of the dam and foundation. By introducing the Drucker-Prager damage criterion, the updated linear finite element model was extended into an onlinear model. Nonlinear seismic behavior of Berke Dam was determined considering the acceleration record of Adana-Ceyhan, Turkey, earthquake in 1998 that occurred near the arch dam region. It is highlighted that the finite element model updating provides a significant influence on the nonlinear seismic response of arch dams. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Background: This study aimed to assess the safety and effectiveness of different dosages of heparin for adhesion prevention by comparing with Seprafilm®, in a murine model. Materials and methods: Seventy five Balb/c mice were randomized into five groups. Group C were reserved as controls, and 62.5 IU, 125 IU, 250 IU of heparin, and Seprafilm® were intraperitoneally applied in studied groups. The severity and locations of adhesions were assessed after the sacrification on day 14. The cause of death was investigated to evaluate the side effects of the drugs. Results: The death of 2 subjects due to peritonitis (1 in Group C, 1 in Group H62.5) left 14 subjects in Group C and Group H62.5 (P ≥ 0.05), and no hemorrhage related death was observed. The use of the products significantly reduced the severity score of adhesion and the number of animals, had adhesions in different locations of the abdominal cavity, when the results were compared with the control group (P < 0.05 for all comparisons). Higher dosages of heparin seemed to be more effective. The results in group S, groups H250 and H125 were quite similar. Conclusions: Relatively high doses (125 IU and 250 IU) of intra-abdominal heparin may be comparable in safety and effectiveness to Seprafilm® in adhesion prevention in mice.
