Özet

The society we are living in is charging men and women with different roles and functions. These differences bring about different responsibilities and duties. This situation generates a “social gender” concept beyond the limits of the biological notion of “gender”. The new media of communication of “social media” is serving also a function of identity construction. Social media, in particular Facebook, enable us to open virtual accounts and to construct these as it pleases us. Social media presents us new opportunities as areas for fictional personality construction. This situation enables also different representations in means of social gender. The study used semi-structured interviews with five female and five male students of the Gumushane University to explore how they constructed their Facebook profiles, the visibility and authenticity differences of their profiles, their visual and verbal self-presentations, in short, what kind of individuality construction they are performing. Learnings in the direction that women were second class citizens who were under pressure and insulted; but actually that wasn't what to be done are obtained during the conversations. It had been understood that in apatriarchal society like Turkey, there were serious differences sourced from sex in the first place, and then within the context of gender, between men and women. Also another point that 50% of the students drew attention is the thruth that if the shares the woman did especially over Facebook weren't affirmed; then that woman could be named with negative attributes easily. Moving especially through the expressions made by female students, knowledge that they couldn't move out of the value judgements of the society, felt themselves restricted, and no libertarian area was left for them, and so they couldn't act peaceful while editing an identity construction in Facebook. The obtained findings shed light on the individuality representation process on the social media
