Francis Bacon'ın tümevarım anlayışı

Novum Organum, Denemeler ve Yeni Atlantis adlı kitaplarının Türkçeye çevrilmesiyle yaşadığımız coğrafyada sadece felsefe alanıyla ilgilenenler arasında değil, genel okuyucu kitlesi tarafından da bilinir olan Francis Bacon, felsefi ve bilimsel düşüncenin gelişmesine katkı yapan çığır açıcı düşünürlerden biridir. Onun başarısı, yerleşik kabullere tepki olarak yeni bir bilimsel yöntem kavrayışı sunmasından kaynaklanır. Bu bağlamda Bacon, tümdengelime dayalı mantığın felsefi ve bilimsel sorunların üstesinden gelemediği/gelemeyeceği iddiasıyla ilerlemeyi sağlayacak olan tek çözüm yolunun tümevarım olduğunu ileri sürmüştür. Bu durum, bilimsel yöntem meselesinin ne denli büyük bir öneme sahip olduğunu göstermiştir. Buna bağlı olarak tez çalışmasında, Bacon'ın Novum Organum adlı eseri merkeze alınarak onun tümevarım anlayışı incelemeye tabi tutulacaktır. Bunun için de düşünürün kendi dönemine kadar etkin olan Aristotelesçi yaklaşım tarzına yönelik eleştirileri, "Bilgi güçtür." şiarıyla özetlenebilecek olan bilim anlayışı ve idol kavramlaştırması irdelenecektir. Böylece bilimsel ilerlemenin olanaklı hale gelmesine etkide bulunan sağlam ve güvenilir bir bilimsel yöntemin tesisinin nasıl olduğu, bilim tarihinin dikkat çekici bir kesitinin değerlendirilmesi suretiyle ele alınacaktır.

Francis Bacon, whose books Novum Organum, Essays and New Atlantis have been translated into Turkish, is one of the groundbreaking thinkers who contributed to the development of philosophical and scientific thought. His success stems from his presentation of a new conception of the scientific method in reaction to established assumptions. In this context, Bacon claimed that deductive logic could not/would not overcome philosophical and scientific problems and argued that induction was the only solution to ensure progress. This situation has shown how important the issue of scientific method is. Accordingly, in this thesis, Bacon's Novum Organum will be taken as the center and his understanding of induction will be analyzed. For this purpose, the thinker's criticisms of the Aristotelian approach that was effective until his time, his understanding of science that can be summarized with the slogan "Knowledge is power" and his conceptualization of idol will be examined. Thus, the establishment of a robust and reliable scientific method that has an impact on the possibility of scientific progress will be discussed by evaluating a remarkable section of the history of science.
