A new cryptic species of the Darevskia parvula group from NE Anatolia (Squamata, Lacertidae)

Arribas, Oscar; Candan, Kamil; Kurnaz, Muammer; Kumlutaş, Yusuf; Caynak, Elif Yıldırım; Ilgaz, Çetin

In this study, we re-examine the Darevskia parvula group comprehensively using morphology, osteology and mitochondrial phylogeny, and describe a new endemic species from Turkey: Darevskia tuniyevisp. nov. A total of 257 adult specimens were evaluated for external morphology (scalation and biometry) with univariate (descriptive statistics and ANOVA with post-hoc tests) and multivariate (Discriminant Analysis and ANOSIM) analyses. In parallel, osteological data and molecular analyses using three DNA markers (mitochondrial 16S rRNA and Cyt-b, nuclear Rag-1) were used to complete the description of the new taxon. The molecular phylogenetic analyses indicated that the D. parvula group is composed of three taxa as D. parvula, D. adjarica and D. tuniyevisp. nov., and showed that D. adjarica and D. tuniyevisp. nov. are reciprocal sister taxa. On the other hand, D. adjarica is morphologically very different from other two forms, while D. parvula is hardly distinguishable externally from D. tuniyevisp. nov. Therefore, we can consider that D. parvula and D. tuniyevisp. nov. are cryptic species. These two cryptic species retain their primitive morphology within the group, while D. adjarica has changed, perhaps due to different bioclimatic conditions in its Pleistocene refuge and current area.

Highly Efficient Spectrophotometric Determination of Cu2+ ion in Aqueous Medium Using a thiosemicarbazone–derivative Ligand

Başoğlu, Aysel; Ocak, Ümmühan; Iyidoğan, Ayşegül Karaküçük

A new simple spectrophotometric method for the determination of Cu2+ ion was developed using an thiosemicarbazone compound, 2-{4-[Bis(2-chloroethyl)amino]benzylidene}-N-[(4-methylthio)phenyl]hydrazinecarbothioamide (TSC). A simultaneous color change was observed (from colorless to bright yellow) by the addition of Cu2+ ion to the TSC ligand solution. The maximum absorbance of the TSC ligand measured at 366 nm was decreased by the presence of Cu2+ ion. The graphs of absorbance obtained by means of the Job’s method and the molar-ratio method proposed a complex formation with a 1:2 Cu2+–TSC ligand stoichiometry. The molar-ratio method with emission measurements also confirmed the stoichiometry. The complex stability constant of TSC–Cu2+ complex (K) was evaluated to be 1.76 × 105. The proposed spectrophotometric method was associated with the change in absorbance at 366 nm owing to the interaction between the TSC ligand and Cu2+ ion. From the spectrophotometric titration data, it was pointed out that TSC ligand (1.5 × 10− 5 mol L-1) selectively reacted with Cu2+ ion in DMSO/water (1:1, v/v, citrate buffer at pH = 6.0). The calibration curve for Cu2+ ion was obtained with a good linearity in the range of 0.0191–0.3241 mg L-1. The detection limit for Cu2+ ion was 0.0063 mg L-1. The proposed method was achievemently implemented in real water samples (drink water, tap water and, distilled water). Satisfactory recoveries were confirmed at three different concentrations. The method presented a relative standard deviation (RSD%) of less than 3.08%.

Seismic Hazard Implications in and Around the Yedisu Seismic Gap (Eastern Türkiye) Based on Coulomb Stress Changes, b-Values, and S-wave Velocity

Alkan, Hamdi; Öztürk, Serkan; Akkaya, İsmail

The Yedisu Seismic Gap is one of the most important seismic gaps throughout the North Anatolian Fault Zone since it has not produced destructive earthquakes for a long time. To analyze the characteristics of future seismic hazards, the interrelationships between seismotectonic b-values, Coulomb stress changes, and S-wave velocity models of crust are presented in and around the Yedisu Seismic Gap located northwest of the Karlıova Triple Junction. For this purpose, the most up-to-date earthquake catalog and the focal mechanism solutions of recent earthquakes are used to image the different depth intervals. Results show that the relatively positive stresses are accumulating along the Varto Fault Zone and Kargapazarı and Yedisu Segments between 5 and 15 km depth intervals. At the same time, the lower b-values between 0.6 and 1.0 are found in the same segments. However, in the volcanic regions around the Karlıova Triple Junction, the low S-wave velocity zones may be related to high b-values, negative stress changes, and volcanic structures. The region between the Turnadağ volcano and the Varto caldera shows scattered stress and b-value changes in the upper crust. Moreover, the probability of earthquakes for Mw = 6.0, 7.0, and 7.7 in the intermediate term (10 years) is estimated as ~ 65%, ~ 17%, and ~ 5%, respectively. Recurrence of earthquakes with Mw = 6.0, 7.0, and 7.7 are calculated as ~ 10, ~ 55, and ~ 187 years, respectively. Consequently, the regions characterized by low strong b-values and positive stress loading reveal high earthquake hazard potential on the whole in the next decade.

Climatic Niche Divergence and Conservatism Promote Speciation in Snake-Eyed Skinks (Sauria: Scincidae): New Insight into the Evolution and Diversification of Ablepharus Species

Vaissi, Somaye; Kurnaz, Muammer; Şahin, Mehmet Kürşat; Hernandez, Axel

The degree to which closely related species conserve or diverge in their niche characteristics may provide insight into evolutionary and diversification processes, as well as some understanding of broad-scale biogeographic patterns. In this study, we used an ensemble of 10 algorithms to predict the distributions of 12 Ablepharus species in geographical (G)-space for the recent time and the future (2081–2100) climate conditions. Niche overlap, equivalency, and similarity tests in environmental (E)-space were used to test niche divergence and conservatism. The consensus model showed that temperature seasonality (n = 6) and annual precipitation (n = 3) were the major factors predicting the distribution of 75% (9 out of 12) of the species. The ensemble models based on ssp585 predict that 83.33% of the species (n = 10) may have contracted their ranges, especially at lower altitudes along their southern margins. They may have also expanded northward during this period. However, in the ssp126, most species’ distribution ranges may remain unchanged despite contractions and expansions. Based on multivariate niche analyses, the distributions of 28 and 11 paired comparisons explored in this study significantly diverged and conserved. We found that closely related species inhabit different habitats and respond to their climatic characteristics, indicating that ecology has a significant influence on speciation.

Enhancement of adsorptive removal efficiency of an anionic dye from aqueous solutions using carboxylic acid-modified mulberry leaves: Artificial neural network modeling, isotherm, and kinetics evaluation

Duran, Celal; Ozeken, Sengul Tugba; Camoglu, Aslihan Yilmaz; Ozdes, Duygu

Natural mulberry leaves and carboxylic acid-modified mulberry (Morus alba L.) leaves were used for the first time to scrutinize the effects of modification on the retention efficiency of an anionic dye (Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR)) from aqueous solutions to suggest an economical and promising adsorbent for the treatment of dye-contaminated water. The characterization of the adsorbents was accomplished through common techniques including SEM, FTIR, and pHpzc determination. Several parameters studied in batch experiments pointed out that the initial pH of 2.0 and the contact time of 240 min were optimum conditions for all the developed RBBR uptake processes. An artificial neural network (ANN) model was applied to formulate a forecast model for the uptake efficiency of RBBR. The experimental data were assessed by different kinetic and isotherm models to explain the mechanism of the developed processes in more detail. Maximum monolayer adsorption capacities of natural mulberry leaves and acetic acid-, citric acid-, and oxalic acid-modified mulberry leaves were determined as 64.5, 95.2, 84.8, and 91.7 mg g1, respectively, by the Langmuir isotherm model. These results demonstrated that the modification with carboxylic acids significantly increases the anionic dye adsorption capacity of the mulberry leaves.

Economic impact of local geographical indication products on farmers: a case of Kelkit sugar (dry) beans

    Dogan, Nilgun

This study aims to present the economic impact of the production of local Geographical Indication (GI) products on producers based on the example of GI Kelkit sugar (dry) beans. Kelkit sugar beans, which are cultivated using local seeds, are legume products with white seeds and pink spots. Sugar beans grown around the Kelkit district of Gümüşhane were registered as a geographical indication product by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TPO) in 2020. This study seeks to answer the question of how the production of Kelkit sugar beans, which are mainly marketed with a geographical indication label, affects producer welfare. The target group of the research consists of farmers living in the Kelkit, Siran, and Kose districts of Gümüşhane who use GI-labelled seeds and do not use GI-labelled seeds in beans production. Propensity Score Matching was employed to determine the economic impact of the production of local geographical indication products on producers. The results indicate that the agricultural enterprises participating in the Kelkit sugar beans production program using geographical indication seeds have lower gross output and gross profit per unit area than those who did not participate in the program.

InSiNet: a deep convolutional approach to skin cancer detection and segmentation

Reis, Hatice Catal; Turk, Veysel; Khoshelham, Kourosh; Kaya, Serhat

Cancer is among the common causes of death around the world. Skin cancer is one of the most lethal types of cancer. Early diagnosis and treatment are vital in skin cancer. In addition to traditional methods, method such as deep learning is frequently used to diagnose and classify the disease. Expert experience plays a major role in diagnosing skin cancer. Therefore, for more reliable results in the diagnosis of skin lesions, deep learning algorithms can help in the correct diagnosis. In this study, we propose InSiNet, a deep learning-based convolutional neural network to detect benign and malignant lesions. The performance of the method is tested on International Skin Imaging Collaboration HAM10000 images (ISIC 2018), ISIC 2019, and ISIC 2020, under the same conditions. The computation time and accuracy comparison analysis was performed between the proposed algorithm and other machine learning techniques (GoogleNet, DenseNet-201, ResNet152V2, EfficientNetB0, RBF-support vector machine, logistic regression, and random forest). The results show that the developed InSiNet architecture outperforms the other methods achieving an accuracy of 94.59%, 91.89%, and 90.54% in ISIC 2018, 2019, and 2020 datasets, respectively. Since the deep learning algorithms eliminate the human factor during diagnosis, they can give reliable results in addition to traditional methods. The Effect of Surface Morphology of Silver Nanoparticles on the Selectivity of Styrene Epoxidation

    Sarlblylk, Oǧuz Yunus

Catalytic materials at the nanoscale level have an enormous impact on sustainable environmental protection, which is important for the future. Therefore, the researchers will intensively carry out the design of catalytic materials with well-ordered surface structures. In more detail, morphology-controlled nanoparticles have special interactions with the reactants that increase catalytic performance and influence the selectivity for catalytic reactions. For those reasons, obtaining specifically surface structure-tuned nanocrystals having different surface arrangements is a significant priority that promises the best model relationship between well-oriented surface structure and catalytic performance. In this study, silver nanocrystals shaped with cubes, truncated octahedrons, and octahedrons were produced. Their catalytic behaviors were examined as an innovation for epoxidation/oxidation reactions of styrene in mild conditions. The morphological and surface characterizations of nanocrystals were determined by analytical and instrumental methods such as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy energy dispersive X-ray (HR-TEM-EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), as well as inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). According to the results, nanoparticles having different surface-facets fractions can be employed to increase the selectivity of styrene epoxide.

Determining the factors influencing tourist souvenir expenditure The case of Turkey

    Kızılcık, Onur; Birdir, Kemal

In this study, information will be explored that will contribute to increasing tourism income in destinations with low tourist expenditure per person. For this purpose, the souvenir expenditure of tourists in Turkey is examined. Souvenir stores in Sultanahmet and the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul were investigated using a qualitative case study research design. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 souvenir sellers and 778 online comments of tourists shopping in souvenir stores were analyzed by netnography. As a result of the research, it has been determined that the efforts made to transform products based on the natural, historical and cultural richness of Turkey into brands, and thus increase local product diversity, play a critical role in increasing souvenir expenditure. On the other hand, the importance of the selection of high spending tourists as the target market and increasing the employment of qualified workers in the tourism sector has emerged.

Grains and Pulses in Diets of the Middle East and a Focus on Buckwheat

Yılmaz, Hacı Ömer; Meriç, Çağdaş Salih

Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench and Fagopyrum tataricum (L.) Gaertn.) is believed to have originated in central Asia. Chiefly cultivated in India, Nepal, China, North Korea, Russia, and Japan, it is a pseudocereal containing high protein, dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and important antioxidants and phenolic compounds. In addition to its high protein bioavailability and economic value, it is an important alternative food with high nutritional value, suitable for the diet of celiac patients because it does not contain gluten. Buckwheat has gained worldwide importance because of the presence of some important bioactive constituents such as rutin, orientin, vitexin, quercetin, isovitexin, and isoorientin; other essential components like fagopyritols find vast potential for glycemic control in type 2 diabetics, positive cardiovascular effects, treatment of celiac disease, prevention of gallstones, and several hormone-dependent tumors. Currently, various products of buckwheat like flour, bread, biscuits, cookies, muffins, cakes, pasta, noodles, crackers, chips, and various fermented products and desserts are available in the market. Buckwheat has attracted worldwide attention, especially from food scientists, for its healing effects over chronic diseases. This chapter focuses on buckwheat in diets of the Middle East and its important effects on health.

Atomic Comagnetometer Gyroscopes for Inertial Navigation Systems: A Review

Karabi̇Naoğlu, Murat Salim; Çakir, Bekir; Başoğlu, Mustafa Engin

In recent years, developments in quantum sensing, laser, and atomic sensor technologies have also enabled advancement in the field of quantum navigation. Atomic-based gyroscopes have emerged as one of the most critical atomic sensors in this respect. In this review, a brief technology statement of spin exchange relaxation free (SERF) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) type atomic comagnetometer gyroscope (CG) is presented. Related studies in the literature have been gathered, and the fundamental compositions of CGs with technical basics are presented. A comparison of SERF and NMR CGs is provided. A basic simulation of SERF CG was carried out because of its high theoretic bias stability limit. Besides, some highly critical challenges for CGs were examined and reported with compensation methods. The objective of this review is to offer a guide for researchers to develop high-precision atomic gyroscopes and to encourage further research.

Information theory and machine learning based authentication of flaxseed oil using portable and handheld vibrational spectroscopy sensors

Aykas, Didem-Peren; Menevseoglu, Ahmed; Gunes, Nurhan

Flaxseed oil is one of the popular edible oils, and its adulteration has become a concern because of its high commodity value. Therefore, there is a need to detect adulterated flaxseeds with a rapid, non-invasive, and simple method to keep the quality of flaxseed oil. This study aimed to develop a machine learning algorithm and information theory to detect adulterated flaxseed oils by vibrational spectroscopy units combined with chemometrics. Oil spectra were collected with portable/handheld vibrational spectroscopic units and analyzed using conditional entropy, support vector machines (SVM), and soft independent modeling of class analogy (SIMCA) to generate classification models to identify the pureness of oils and partial least square regression (PLSR) to predict the adulterant levels and fatty acid distributions. Conditional entropy showed that two or three wavenumbers/shifts could discriminate the oils using machine learning algorithms with an accuracy of over 95%. SIMCA models determined the oils with an interclass distance (ICD) over 1.1. Specifically, the Fourier transform mid-infrared (FT-MIR) unit provided the best classification of the oils with ICD over 4.9. All instruments showed good performance in predicting fatty acids and adulteration levels with rval≥0.89 and standard error prediction (SEP) ≤1.7%. Overall, these portable/handheld units showed great potential for rapid, simple, and non-invasive monitoring to identify adulterated flaxseed oils.

The impact of the Ukraine war on Russian military capabilities in the Arctic

    Limon, Onur; Gürdal Limon, Elif

This study examines the impact of the two-year occupation of Ukraine on Russia’s military capabilities in the Arctic and analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of Russia’s military capacity in this region. Using a methodology based on document analysis and SWOT analysis, the study aims to unravel the intricate interplay between the Ukraine conflict and Russia’s military aspirations in the Arctic and thereby improve our understanding of the military implications of these developments. The results of the study highlight a remarkable imbalance in Russia’s military capabilities in the vast Arctic region, which stretches across the western, central, and eastern sectors. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine is acting as a catalyst, forcing Russia to strengthen its conventional forces and improve its military readiness in the immediate future. As a result, there is a discernible inclination to prioritize nuclear capabilities as part of Russia’s strategic calculus in the Arctic region.

Phytoremediation ability of Helichrysum arenarium plant for Au and Ag: case study at Demirören village (Gümüşhane, Turkey)

    Vural, Alaaddin; Safari, Semaneh

It was investigated ability of Helichrysum arenarium plant, in phytoextraction, phytostabilization, and phytoremediation in this study. Soil and plant samples were collected from the Demirören alteration site which has the potential of gold mineralization and analyzed for gold and silver. When the results of the analysis were evaluated, it was determined that the gold and silver contents in the soil did not show compatibility with the gold and silver contents of the plants grown at the same point. It was concluded that the high gold and silver concentrations in the plants are related to the hydrothermal alteration and weathering at the point where the plants grow. For investigation of phytoremediation ability of the plant, translocation factor (TF), bio-concentration factor (BCF), and bioaccumulation factor (BAF) were calculated. The values of TF, BAF, and BCF for Ag are equal 0.33, 0.043, and 0.13 and for Au are equal 2.04, 0.59, and 0.29, respectively. So, obtained data show that Helichrysum arenarium is not appropriate for phytoextraction and phytostabilization of gold and silver in this case, but H. arenarium can be used in phyto-mining and for biogeochemical exploration of gold. Considering that the gold and silver concentrations in the developed soil in the study area are low concentrations, it is predicted that a similar study will yield satisfactory-interesting results when it is made in plants grown on the gold mineralization/enrichment areas.

INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECTS OF VARIOUS OPERATING PARAMETERS ON GEOPOLYMER MORTARS MADE FROM NATURAL MINERALS AND INDUSTRIAL WASTE MATERIALS

    Temizer, Hülya; Çavdar, Özlem

In this study, fly ash (FA) from Sivas/Kangal thermal power plant and blast furnace slag (BFS) from Bolu cement industry were used as the main binder materials. Based on both the literature and preliminary tests, samples were prepared with 85% blast furnace slag and 15% fly ash (85BFS15FA) as the main binder. In addition, the effect of geopolymer main binders and different additives such as mine waste, marble powder, and titanium dioxide were evaluated under various working conditions. The aim was to observe the effect of three different levels and 6 different parameters on the geopolymer samples using the Taguchi optimization method. Accordingly, the L27 orthogonal matrix was created. Three different molar ratios (8M, 10M, 12M) of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution and sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) solution were used as alkaline activators. Physical and some mechanical tests such as flexural strength, compressive strength, water absorption, and void ratio were performed on the 7, 28, 56, and 90-day samples, and Taguchi and ANOVA statistical analyses were performed on the 90-day samples. The highest compressive strength observed among 108 samples reached 65.75 MPa in the S20 samples (90-day). Taguchi and ANOVA statistical analyses identified curing temperature as the most significant parameter influencing the geopolymer samples. Additionally, the Signal to Noise ratio data indicated that the optimal curing temperature, determined to be the most effective based on the 'Larger is better' criterion, was found to be 75 ̊C.

Islamic Law Challenges in Addressing Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation

Insani, Nur; Karimullah, Suud Sarim; Sulastri

Human trafficking and sexual exploitation remain complex global problems. Islamic law, as one of the legal systems in the world, has a strategic role in participating in overcoming this problem. However, the Islamic legal norms implementation requires support from the state and society. This research discusses the strategic role and challenges of the law in overcoming human trafficking and sexual exploitation. The research method used normative Islamic law with a philosophical approach. The analysis technique used prescriptive analysis, with the analysis process using Islamic legal reasoning. The research results show that Islamic law has a strategic role in resolving the problem of human trafficking and sexual exploitation. The argument is that, philosophically, Islamic law emphasizes the importance of maintaining human honor and dignity, while theoretically, Islamic law recognizes two main concepts in punishment, namely hudud and ta'zir. Hudud is a punishment determined by Allah and has clear rules in the Quran and Hadith. Meanwhile, ta'zir is a punishment determined by a judge for the benefit of society. The challenges of Islamic law in overcoming human trafficking and sexual exploitation are a lack of understanding of Islamic legal norms, which requires human values and justice; Islamic law is not implementable; and there is a perception that the principles of Islamic law can only be applied in Islamic countries. Therefore, global Muslim countries and communities are the main actors in maximizing the application of Islamic legal principles in overcoming human trafficking and sexual exploitation.
