Akar, Bülent; Baltacı, Cemalettin; Düzgün, Azer Özad; Karpuz, Omer; Karakullukçu, Volkan; Erdoğdu, Esma Gülbahar

This work aimed to study the antioxidant, antibacterial, and dye adsorption capabilities of the aqueous extract of Cotoneaster sp. fruits (CFE) and iron oxide nanoparticles (CF-FeONP) green-synthesized from the CFE. CF-FeONPs were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. The antioxidant activity of CFE and CF-FeONPs was assessed through various tests, including ABTS radical scavenging activity, DPPH radical scavenging activity, iron-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and total antioxidant content (TAC). The CF-FeONPs had superior antibacterial and antioxidant activity compared to the CFEs. Furthermore, CF-FeONPs suppressed the growth of Gram-negative bacteria such as Yersinia pseudotuberculosis ATCC 911, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Proteus vulgaris ATCC 13315, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 43288, as well as by Gram-positive bacteria like Streptococcus pyogenes ATCC 19615, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. and Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633. The microdilution medium technique was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of CFE and CF-FeONPs against these bacteria strains. The adsorption rates of CF-FeONPs exhibited variability based on the quantity of adsorbent used and the specific dye type, whereas the lowest adsorption rate was 250 mg/L. CF-FeONPs demonstrated higher adsorption capacities for malachite green (MG) dye compared to methylene blue (MB) and phenol red (PR).

Inheritance in the Mandailing Community: Value Changes from a Legal Culture Perspective

Hsb, Putra Halomoan; Siregar, Fatahuddin Aziz; Karimullah, Suud Sarim

This study explores the concept of marbagi dos in relation to the changing inheritance practices of the Mandailing community, viewed through the lens of legal culture. Marbagi dos, which literally means equal in the Mandailing indigenous people, has traditionally had a very important social dimension and equality. The type of research methodology used in this study is qualitative with a descriptive approach. The research data was obtained through interview techniques and participatory observation. In-depth interviews will be carried out with traditional leaders, scholars, and community members who play a direct role in the inheritance process. Using a legal culture approach, this study analyzes how the changes in values in Mandailing society are influenced by Islam which has implications for changes in inheritance practices in Mandailing, as well as how the community balances customary traditions with modern equality demands. The results of the study show that this inheritance transformation is a reflection of the adaptation of the Mandailing people to social changes, while maintaining cultural values within the framework of customary law. The implications of this study suggest that customary law is dynamic and capable of adapting to Islamic law and state law, highlighting the need for synergy between these three legal systems in crafting more inclusive policies.

Investigation of perceived parental attitude in children exposed to sexual abuse: A case-control study

Bayrak, Nurten Gülsüm; Emirza, Elif Güzide; Uzun, Sevda

Background: The enduring impact of children being subjected to sexual abuse is characterized by lasting traumatic effects. Aims: This study aims to assess the influence of perceived parental attitudes on the incidence of sexual abuse in children who have experienced such abuse, comparing them with a control group. Methods: The research took place at the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) of a hospital in northern Turkey and in the pediatric outpatient clinics of the same institution. The study evaluated 101 children who were exposed to sexual abuse and 100 children who were not. Data collection took place between November 2022 and August 2023. The study employed a ‘Descriptive Information Form’ and the ‘Parental Attitude Scale’ for both case and control groups. The t-test for independent samples, descriptive statistics, and logistic regression analysis were used for data analysis. Results: Analysis of scores from the Parental Attitude Scale revealed significantly lower mean scores in acceptance-involvement and strictness-supervision in the case group (p <.05). The mean scores for ‘acceptance-involvement’ (X¯ = 22.82 ± 6.26, X¯ = 25.71 ± 3.89) were highest in the case and control groups. Neglectful attitude (38.6%) was more prevalent in the case group, while the control group exhibited a higher frequency of democratic attitude (37%). In terms of predictors, acceptance-involvement (OR = 1.091, p =.005) and maternal employment (OR = 4.410, p <.001) were identified as the most significant predictors of exposed to sexual abuse. The study’s Cronbach’s alpha value for the scale was α =.743. Conclusion: The study’s findings on parental attitudes suggest a potential connection between children’s exposure to sexual abuse and inadequate parental acceptance, involvement, supervision, and control.

An Examination of Relationships Between Postural Habits and Awareness of Fatigue and Musculoskeletal Discomfort in Nurses

Tuncer, Metin; Tuncer, Gülsüm Zekiye; Turan, Şeyma; Khorshtd, Leyla

Introduction: Prolonged fatigue, caused by the hospital's demanding workload and physical demands, can increase strain on the musculoskeletal system, leading to musculoskeletal issues that may negatively impact nurses' job performance and quality of life. High postural awareness, on the other hand, can help nurses develop correct posture and movement habits, reducing the risk of experiencing discomfort, thus preserving their physical health and supporting workforce sustainability. Therefore, it is of particular importance to determine the relationship of postural awareness to fatigue and musculoskeletal discomfort in nurses working in a hospital environment with heavy working conditions and many ergonomic risks. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the postural habits, awareness, occupational fatigue levels and musculoskeletal disorders of nurses working in hospitals and to examine the relationships between these factors. Method: This study used a quantitative cross-sectional design. The study sample consisted of 132 nurses working in a hospital in Türkiye. The data for the study were collected between July and October 2023 using the Occupational Fatigue Exhaustion/Recovery Scale (OFER), Cornell Musculoskeletal Discomfort Questionnaire (CMDQ) and Postural Habits and Awareness Scale (PHAS). Results: A significant positive, low-level correlation was found between the Recovery subscale of the OFER scale and the Postural Habits subscale of the PHAS scale (r = 0.277, p < 0.05). A significant negative, moderate-level correlation was observed between the Chronic Fatigue subscale of the OFER scale and the Postural Habits subscale of the PHAS scale (r = −0.311, p < 0.001). Additionally, a significant negative, moderate-level correlation was found between the Acute Fatigue subscale of the OFER scale and the Postural Habits subscale of the PHAS scale (r = −0.326, p < 0.001). Conclusion: This study found that as nurses' correct postural habits improved, both acute and chronic fatigue decreased, whereas recovery increased. It is suggested that interventions aimed at enhancing postural awareness and promoting correct postural habits in nurses may also positively influence occupational fatigue and exhaustion.

The role of brand identity, brand lifestyle congruence, and brand satisfaction on repurchase intention: a multi-group structural equation model

Acar, Ayşegül; Büyükdağ, Naci; Türten, Burak; Diker, Ersin; Çalışır, Gülsüm

This study investigated the relationship between brand identity, brand lifestyle congruence, brand satisfaction, and repurchase intention. In addition, this study examined how the primary reference group’s family and peer/friend affected individuals’ perceptions of brand identity, brand-lifestyle congruence, brand satisfaction, and purchase intention through a multi-group structural equation model. A total of 610 valid and useable responses, collected from a social media channel, were analyzed. Grounded in social identity theory and self-congruity theory, a set of hypotheses was examined within a research model. The findings show that brand identity significantly affects brand lifestyle congruence, brand satisfaction, and repurchase intentions. In addition, brand-lifestyle congruence significantly affects brand satisfaction and repurchase intentions, with brand satisfaction also significantly affecting purchase intentions. Also, high-income and elderly consumers tend to ignore the family and peer effects. Middle-aged, middle-income men who value product origin show a strong brand perception, and are less influenced by family. In contrast, women, typically lower-income and price-focused, are more receptive to family and peer effects and generally indifferent to product origin. This research advances brand identity literature by examining the effects of brand brand-lifestyle congruence, brand satisfaction, and purchase intention. It suggests that the synergy between brand identity, brand lifestyle congruence, and brand satisfaction significantly enhances repurchase intentions. Besides, examining profiles in the context of brands, consumers, and reference groups contributes additional value to the field.

Abusive supervision: can workplace friendships exacerbate work alienation and intent to quit?

Özbek, Mehmet Ferhat; Stefanidis, Abraham; Banai, Moshe; Akar, Vural

Purpose – Drawing on conservation of resources, similarity-attraction and social comparison theories, this research aims to examine how supervisors’ abusive behaviour influences employees’ intent to quit by investigating the mediating role of work alienation and the moderating role of workplace friendship. Design/methodology/approach – In Study I, time-lagged survey data were collected from 241 academic institutions’ employees at two separate times to empirically test the study’s hypotheses. In Study II, four different scenario manipulations were administered to 220 academic institutions’ undergraduate and graduate students. Both studies were conducted in Türkiye. Findings – The results of the survey indicate a positive relationship between employee exposure to supervisors’ abusive behaviour and their intent to quit, with work alienation mediating this relationship, and workplace friendship partially boosting the intensity of the negative effect. Similar results were confirmed by the findings of the survey conducted across four scenario manipulations in the education sector. Research limitations/implications – Despite the two-sector, two-instrument study design used, this research may only partially capture and explain the relationships among the studied variables. To enhance the generalisability of their findings, future studies should investigate broader cultural and occupational contexts, using both longitudinal and mixed-method designs. Practical implications – Strong workplace friendships may intensify the negative impact of abusive supervision, increasing staff alienation and turnover intentions, signalling risks for team stability and retention. Economic implications of high-level employee turnover should be considered by managers. Originality/value – This study challenges the prevailing assumption that workplace or academic friendships are universally beneficial. By demonstrating that strong workplace friendships can exacerbate the negative effects of supervisors’ or instructors’ abusive behaviour, it introduces a more nuanced understanding of interpersonal dynamics in organisational and educational settings.

“I Am Learning to Protect Myself with Mika”: An Evaluation of Self-Protection Behaviors of Turkish Preschoolers

Yılmaz Irmak, Türkan; Kızıltepe, Rukiye; Eslek, Duygu; Kütük, Bahtım; Güney, Onuray

Child sexual abuse (CSA) prevention programs contribute to increases in children’s knowledge and skills to protect themselves from CSA. However, there is a paucity of research investigating self-protection behaviors among children to demonstrate whether relevant CSA knowledge and skills are transferable in risky situations. We aimed to examine the effectiveness of the “I am learning to protect myself with Mika” program on preschool children’s self-protection behaviors. The sample included 51 preschool children (54.9% girls) from Izmir, Turkey and their parents. The mean age of the children was 65.57 months (SD = 7.21). The present study employed a posttest-only control group design, and the classrooms were randomly assigned to the intervention and wait-list comparison groups. The participating teachers implemented the program over a five-week period. Then, children’s self-protection behavior was assessed with children from both groups using a role-play scenario involving a request from a stranger. Accordingly, we tested whether children in the intervention group were more likely to demonstrate self-protection behaviors compared to those in the comparison group. The findings showed that the intervention group (77.3%) rejected the offer from strangers and behaved more safely than did the wait-list comparison group (24.2%; χ2(1) = 13.879, p < 0.001). “I am learning to protect myself with Mika” was found to be effective in contributing to preschoolers’ self-protective behaviors. The promising results obtained in this study may encourage further exploration of the behavioral outcomes of sexual abuse prevention programs.

DEVELOPING A MODEL SOFTWARE TO DETERMINE THE EFFECT OF HIGH VOLTAGE TRANSMISSION LINES (HVTL) ON THE RESIDENTIAL LAND VALUE BY USING AHP METHOD

    Marabaoğlu, Seda Nur; Uzun, Bayram

Due to High Voltage Transmission Lines (HVTL), easement expropriation is made and an easement price (compensation) is paid to the property owner. Since there is not a standard method, this price is calculated inappropriately and inaccurately. Therefore, either the property owner or the government suffers material damage. The main objective of this study is to determine the impact of HVTL factors on property value using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. Additionally, within the scope of the study, the aim is to develop a software model that automatically detects impairment rate and easement prices. In the study, a total of 79 individuals from 21 different countries participated in the national and international survey. The weights of the factors were determined using the AHP. A model software was created by integrating the weight values and the interface software of the model was created. The model software was tested with sixty expert reports prepared by different experts collected from ten different provinces. The rate of error in the expert reports was found to be at least 0.38% and at most 84.98%. With this software, an appraisal standard that will largely eliminate the existing injustices in the determination of the easement price will be provided. In addition, the inconsistencies between the expert reports of similar parcels and easements will be reduced, and easement prices will be paid fairly.

Psychosocial problems experienced by intensive care nurses regarding sleep pattern within the scope of working conditions: A phenomenological study

Atasayar, Belgin Şen; Emirza, Elif Güzide; Uzun, Sevda

Background: Nurses working in intensive care units experience insomnia and accompanying psychosocial problems due to working conditions. Aim: This study explores with a phenomenological approach the psychosocial problems experienced by intensive care nurses regarding sleep patterns within the scope of working conditions. Study Design: In this phenomenological study, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 16 nurses working in the surgical intensive care unit of a state hospital in Türkiye. Criterion sampling method, one of the purposive sampling methods, was used to reach the sample group. Researchers' interviews continued until they reached data saturation. All interviews were recorded on a voice recorder after obtaining the necessary permissions from the nurses and then transcribed. The study data were evaluated using thematic analysis. The current manuscript was reported following the COREQ checklist. Results: Data analysis revealed three main themes (how working as an intensive care nurse changes sleep patterns, the relationship between shift work, work performance, patient care and how working as an intensive care nurse changes individual life and coping strategies) and nine subthemes (mental, physical, social, work performance, patient care, nutrition, family life, social life and coping). Conclusion: The study's findings revealed that nurses working in intensive care experienced psychosocial difficulties related to sleep patterns and had trouble coping. In particular, it was determined that sleep problems of intensive care nurses cause difficulties in family life, nutrition and social life. It is recommended that the number of personnel in workplaces be increased, overtime hours should be limited, and professional development and training on the importance of sleep for all nurses should be provided. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Nurses working in intensive care units may experience psychosocial problems due to working conditions, which may negatively change their coping skills. Therefore, organizing the working conditions of nurses positively changes their coping skills.

    Kiymis, Ibrahim; Dogan, Ahsen Aydin

Objective The Kahramanmaras Earthquakes (2023) are the largest and most devastating earthquakes in the history of the Republic. The effects of these earthquakes are particularly deeply felt among younger generations and trigger various psychological factors. Therefore, the aim of this study is to measure the levels of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social phobia (SP), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and depression on separation anxiety disorder (SAD) among adolescent earthquake survivors affected by the Kahramanmaras Earthquakes (2023). Methods In the study, the data were obtained using a survey method. A total of 605 adolescent earthquake survivors exposed to the Kahramanmaras earthquakes were reached. The research was analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). Results Surprisingly, according to the research findings, there was no significant and positive relationship between SP (β = -0.006, P > 0.05) and Depression (β = -0.117, P > 0.05) on SAD. Conclusions Consequently, while PTSD and GAD had significant and positive effects on SAD in those adolescent earthquake survivors affected by the Kahramanmaras Earthquakes (2023), SP and Depression did not have significant and positive effects on SAD. Therefore, it is recommended that future studies examine the effects of SP and Depression on SAD more comprehensively and in detail through qualitative research.
