The effect of fabrication method on physical properties of different Y211 and 20% Ag2O added YBCO sample

Duman, Şeyda; Çakır, Bakiye; Başoğlu, Mehmet; Küçükömeroğlu, Tayfur; Aydıner, Alev

In this study, it is aimed to investigate the effects of production methods on the physical properties of 20% Ag2O and different ratios of Y211 added YBCO samples. In this context, the samples with Y123 + x % (x = 20, 25, 30) Y211 + 20%Ag2O compositions were fabricated by MPMG and TSMG methods in two groups to join YBCO main samples. XRD measurements were performed to determine the characteristic peaks. Trapped magnetic fields and vertical levitation forces between the bulk samples and a permanent magnet were measured using a computer-controlled system in ZFC at 77 K. From the XRD measurements, it was found that MPMG YBCO samples had a dominant superconducting structure and partially showed orientation peaks in the c-axis direction, while TSMG YBCO samples were single-crystal samples oriented along the c-axis. From the trapped magnetic field measurement results, the trapped magnetic field value of the Y123 + 25%Y211 + 20%Ag2O (TAg25) sample prepared by the TSMG method was higher than that of the other samples. Among the levitation force measurement results, the maximum repulsive force values of TAg25 and TAg30 (Y123 + 30%Y211 + 20%Ag2O) samples are the highest. At the same time, the hysteresis widths of these samples are also the highest, which proves that their flux-pinning potential is higher than that of the other samples.

Uranium migration and radioactive characteristics of the Sarıçiçek and Sarıhan Granodiorites

    Altundaş, Suna; Çınar, Hakan

The radionuclide concentrations of eU (ppm), eTh (ppm), K (%) and dose rate values were measured in Sarıçiçek (Gümüşhane) and Sarıhan (Bayburt) granodiorites for a duration of 5 minutes at each of 532 measurement points. The radioelement ratios (eU/eTh, eU/K, and eTh/K) indicating the origins of the rocks, the geochemical indicators (Ume, F parameter, and eU-(eTh/3,5) rate) showing the uranium mobility and the radioelement concentrations were calculated and mapped within the study areas. The average K, eU, and eTh concentrations were calculated as 2.98%, 3.15 ppm, and 12.45 ppm for Sarıçiçek granodiorite, and 1.83%, 2.73 ppm, and 13.6 ppm for Sarıhan granodiorite, respectively. Higher radioactivity values were observed in basaltic, sedimentary, and ultramafic rock combinations within the granodiorite masses. In the classification according to radioelement ratios, it was concluded that the rocks in the study areas formed as a mixture of upper mantle and crustal materials. In both study areas, there was uranium transport from the granodioritic masses into the surrounding rocks, and accordingly, the rocks in the surrounding formations were enriched in uranium. As a result, radioactivity levels, rock formation origins, and uranium transport of both granodioritic masses and rocks in the surrounding formations were determined by evaluation with radioelement concentration values and ratios and migration parameters. The study areas were characterized by associating them with geology in light of radioactive data.

3D Modelling and Feasibility Assessment of Granite Deposit using 2D Electrical Resistivity Tomography, Borehole, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Survey

Junaid, Muhammad; Abdullah, Rini Asnida; Sa’ari, Radzuan; Ali, Wahid; Islam, Amber; Sari, Mahmut

This research work aims to critically analyze the efficacy of inexpensive and rapid 2D electrical resistivity tomography (2D ERT) survey for sub-surface geological delineation of granite deposits. The research work involves six ERT profiles using the Schlumberger protocol with an inner and outer electrode spacing of 5 m and 10 m, respectively. In addition, the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) survey is also performed to obtain the terrain information of the studied area. At the same time, a few boreholes are drilled to validate the 2D ERT interpretations. The 2D ERT survey reveals that strong resistivity contrast enables inverted resistivity imaging to characterize the deposit such as topsoil (100-800 Ωm), fracture granite (800-2300 Ωm), and solid granite (> 2300 Ωm). The results obtained from UAV, 2DERT, and borehole survey are further processed to estimate the bedrock to topsoil ratio to assess the feasibility of the deposit. The bedrock to topsoil ratio, estimated by 2D ERT and borehole, is 3.2 and 2.2, respectively. At the same time, the combined UAV, 2D ERT, and borehole survey calculates the bedrock volume 3.2 times to topsoil. Thus the research work allows us to conclude that 2D ERT is an inexpensive, viable, and efficient technique for sub-surface geological documentation, and helps select appropriate mining methods.

Determination of the Cytotoxicity and Antibiofilm Potential Effect of Equisetum arvense Silver Nanoparticles

Akar, Zeynep; Akay, Seref; Ejder, Nebahat; Özad Düzgün, Azer

This study aimed to synthesize and characterize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by green synthesis from Equisetum arvense (Ea) extracts and to investigate their cytotoxicity, antibiofilm activity, and α-glucosidase enzyme inhibition. Diverse characterization techniques were applied to verify the production of nanoparticles. SEM examination confirmed that the size of nanoparticles is in the range of 40–60 nm. Also, interactions between silver and natural compounds of plant extract were confirmed through FT-IR and EDX analyses. It was determined that Equisetum arvense silver nanoparticles had antibiofilm activity against three different clinical strains with high biofilm-forming ability. AgNPs reduced the biofilm-forming capacity of clinical A. baumannii isolate with strong biofilm-forming capacity by approximately twofold, while the capacity of clinical K.pneumonaie and E.coli isolates decreased by 1.5 and 1.2 fold, respectively. The α-glucosidase enzyme inhibition potential of the AgNPs, which is determined as 93.50%, was higher than the plant extract with, and the α- 30.37%. MTT was performed to assess whether incubation of nanoparticles with A549 and ARPE-19 cell lines affected their viability, and a dramatic reduction in cell growth inhibition of both A549 and ARPE-19 cells was observed. It has been shown that A549 cells treated with 200 and 150 µg/mL nanoparticles had less cell proliferation compared to control cells at 24-h and 48-h incubation time. According to these results, Ea-derived AgNPs appear to have potential anticancer activity against A549 cancer cells. Investigating the effects of green synthesis nanoparticles on microbial biofilm and various tumors may be important for developing new therapies. The outcomes of this study have showed that Ea-AgNPsmay have a high potential both in the treatment of pathogenic strains that form biofilms, as well as in anticancer therapy use.

Hypoglycaemia after Initiation of CFTR Modulator Therapy in a Cystic Fibrosis Patient without Diabetes

Yskout, Marie; Vliebergh, Joke; Bor, Hakan; Dupont, Lieven; Lorent, Natalie; Van Bleyenbergh, Pascal; Gillard, Pieter; Van Der Schueren, Bart; Mertens, Ann; Mathieu, Chantal

Introduction. Cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR) modulator therapies improve respiratory function and glycaemic control in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). The direct effect of CFTR modulator therapies on pancreatic function in patients without preexisting diabetes remains unclear. Case Presentation. An 18-year-old female with CF caused by F508del/F508del mutation, who had no diabetes, developed postprandial hypoglycaemias 6 months after initiation of elexacaftor, tezacaftor, and ivacaftor combination therapy (ETI). Symptoms were persisted after brief discontinuation of ETI, but her symptoms and time-in-hypoglycaemia had improved remarkably by avoiding high glycaemic index-foods. Discussion. This case of hypoglycaemia associated with CFTR modulator therapy in a patient without preexisting diabetes suggests that CFTR modulator therapy has the potential to directly affect glucose homeostasis. There might be an improvement in insulin secretion as well as a reduction in systemic insulin resistance. Conclusion. Treatment of CF patients without diabetes with CFTR modulator therapies can cause recurrent hypoglycaemic episodes which resolve with dietary measures.

Determining Levels of Search and Rescue Team’s Knowledge on Avalanche Search and Rescue

Kaya, Nahsan; Atalay, Ezgi; Demir Doğan, Melike

Avalanches kill more than 150 people every year, although no one knows the exact figure. Additionally, the mortality rate in avalanche incidents may reach up to 70% due to factors such as the lack of knowledge, experience, and organization of search and rescue personnel. This cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the awareness on avalanche and the level of knowledge on search and rescue among personnel who respond to avalanche incidents and participate in search and rescue activities. The sample consisted of 304 individuals who agreed to participate in the study between June and July 2021. Data were collected using an information form on socio-demographic characteristics and a survey prepared by the researchers upon the relevant literature review. It was found that while 65.8% of the participants were female, 34.2% were male. Their mean age was 29.69±8.50 years. The rate of those participating in search and rescue activities in case of a disaster was 44.1 %. The participants had a moderate level of knowledge on avalanche search and rescue as well as on-site medical management of avalanche victims. Those who participated in search and rescue activities in case of a disaster had a higher level of knowledge on avalanche search and rescue than those who did not. Those who were trained on avalanche search and rescue (preparedness, response) had higher levels of knowledge on avalanche search and rescue and on-site medical management of avalanche victims when compared to those who were not. As a consequence, it was determined that participation in search and rescue activities in a disaster increased the personnel’s level knowledge. Also, the related training elevated the levels of knowledge on both avalanche search and rescue and on-site medical management of avalanche victims.

Predicted current and future distribution of the fire salamander, Salamandra infraimmaculata in Turkey

    Kurnaz, Muammer

Although the fire salamander, Salamandra infraimmaculata, is relatively distributed in a broad area in the Middle East, it lives in a narrow area in southeast and south Anatolia in Turkey. The habitats of the species have been downgraded day by day, and its IUCN category is listed as "NT, and the population trend is decreasing. Within the scope of this study, a model was created with the existing locality records of the species using ecological niche modeling. As a result of this model, the current and future distribution of the species were compared. The results obtained from the analyzes made within the scope of this study showed that the current probable distribution of the species coincides with the existing locality records. However, for possible climate change scenarios, the possible future distribution of the species will be thought to be negatively affected by the increase in the greenhouse gas effect, the change in the amount of carbon dioxide, and the increase of many harmful gas concentrations in the atmosphere. If all four climate scenarios proposed in this study in the future occur sequentially, the species will have to limit or change its range, and even become will be extinct in some areas. Species conservation action plans should be initiated, and local governments should take necessary measures to prevent this from happening.

Adsorption Behaviour of EDTA Modified Magnetic Fe3O4 Coated Brewed Tea Waste on Cr(VI) Removal

Yilmaz Camoglu, Aslihan; Ozdes, Duygu; Duran, Celal

The study focused on fabricating a novel magnetic Fe3O4 loaded and EDTA modified brewed tea waste (TW-Fe3O4-EDTA) as a cheap, environmentally friendly, and efficient adsorbent for the removal of Cr(VI) ions from aqueous medium in a batch system. Characterization of the prepared adsorbent was performed with different techniques. Adsorption experiments were implemented at different conditions including initial solution pH (1.0–7.0), equilibrium time (1–480 min), adsorbent dosage (1.0–20.0 g L–1), and initial Cr(VI) concentration (50–1000 mg L–1). The optimum adsorption performance was observed at pH 2.0 with 120 min of contact time. Maximum adsorption capacity of 114.9 mg g–1 was acquired for TW-Fe3O4-EDTA which is much higher than the recently developed adsorbents for Cr(VI) removal. Adsorption process was well explicated by Freundlich isotherm model and the adsorption rate is described in accordance with pseudo-second order kinetic model. It was observed that common salts did not have a notable influence on Cr(VI) adsorption. The results of the study indicated that TW-Fe3O4-EDTA can be applied as an effective adsorbent in heavy metal removal as an alternative to many expensive adsorbents available in the literature.

An Efficient Technique Based on Deep Learning for Automatic Focusing in Microscopic System

Dogu, Fatma Tuana; Dogan, Hulya; Dogan, Ramazan Ozgur; Ay, Ilyas; Sezen, Sena F.

During microscopic examination process, experts firstly determine the most appropriate focusing point by precisely moving the microscope stage in the Z axis. This manual focusing process may cause variability in results depending on hand-eye coordination and individual experience. Therefore, the development of automatic focusing offers superior quality and consistent imaging. Many researchers have studied automatic focusing systems and proposed many focus functions to extract focus information from multi-focus images. Nevertheless, these focusing systems still consist of several significant limitations such as requiring a supplementary material, longer running time, producing different performance depending on the sample and magnification objective. In this study, an efficient technique based on deep learning is proposed to automatically determine the focused image during microscopic examination processes to minimize these limitations in the literature. This technique takes a sequence of images with the same field of view and different focuses as input and gives the image with maximum focusing as output. The proposed technique is compared with other automatic focusing techniques on the literature. In this study, novel multi-focus image sequences obtained from liver, intestine, heart, kidney, and lung samples is prepared to evaluate the performance of automatic focusing techniques. These sequences are obtained by scanning with 10× and 40× magnification objectives. Running time, accuracy, number of local maximum points, range, and noise levels are used as evaluation criteria in this study. According to evaluation criteria results obtained in this study, it has been proven that the proposed technique provides better performance than other automatic focusing techniques.

Effect of thickness and melting temperature of phase change material integrated into exterior wall on building energy performance and CO2 emission reduction; [Dış duvara entegre edilen faz değiştiren malzemenin kalınlığı ve erime sıcaklığının bina enerji performansı ve CO2 emisyon azalımına etkisi]

    İlgar, Gamze; Terhan, Meryem

In the study, the effect of phase change materials integrated into the building's external wall has been investigated in terms of material type, thickness, and melting temperature of phase change material on the building energy performance for İzmir Province. A villa residential project has been modelled in 3D using DesignBuilder energy simulation software and two different external wall configurations have been designed by changing the position, thickness and melting temperature of the PCMs into the wall. The amount of CO2 emission reductions that PCMs will provide according to the fuel type of the building's heating system has been calculated. Using PCMs in the external wall not only provides high heating and cooling energy savings but also increases thermal comfort indoors by reducing temperature fluctuations. The PCM melting temperature of 23℃ performs quite well compared to other temperatures in both cooling energy and heating energy demand reduction. By increasing the triple thickness of the PCM, 18.81% in heating energy and 22.85% in cooling energy savings can be achieved. Depending on the external wall and phase change material types, different thicknesses and melting temperatures of PCM, annual total energy saving of the phase-change material is calculated between 10,349.50-83,345.98 kJ/m2.year and the annual CO2 emission reduction according to fuel types has been found as 0.672-14.284 kgCO2/m2.year.

Strength Analysis in Bonded, Bolted and Bolted-Bonded Joints, Single Lap Joints, Metal/Composite Plates

    Sadık, Ali; Karabudak, Filiz

Today, especially in many fields that require structural durability, such as the aerospace and automotive industries, there has been a need to use different bonding techniques separately or together in order to use materials together with different mechanical properties. In this study, stress and damage analysis of single lap joints, bonding and bolt-bonding metal/composite joints under tensile loads were performed. The nine kinds of single lap joint models in different combinations (bonded, bolted and bolt-bonded) were prepared by using acrylic adhesive (Acrytron 1E1) and 100-25-3 mm in size; AZ91/AZ91, AZ91-carbon fiber and carbon fiber-carbon fiber plates. Some comparisons were carried out by examining the stresses and deformations that occur in joint models exposed to tensile and 4-point bending tests. As a result of the tensile test, it was determined that the highest maximum tensile stress occurred in AZ91-CF bolt-bonded samples. In the four-point bending test, the maximum shear force value was determined in the CF-CF bolted-bonded samples.

Effects of homogenization and packing material on chemical, biochemical and microbiological properties of Kashar cheese

    Ürkek, B.; Tunçtürk, Y.

In this study, Kashar cheese milk was homogenized at three different levels (0, 10 and 15 MPa). The produced Kashar cheeses were ripened for 90 d at 4 °C as covered with paraffin or uncovered. Some chemical properties, proteolysis, lipolysis, peroxide and thiobarbituric acid (TBA), and microbiological characteristics of Kashar cheeses were examined during storage. The values of all chemical, biochemical and microbiological parameters increased at the end of ripening compared with the beginning of ripening in all samples. Proteolysis values in cheese samples generally decreased with homogenization pressure. Lipolysis, peroxide, TBA values of samples were decreased depending on the homogenization pressure. The proteolysis, lipolysis, TBA, and peroxide values of samples covered with paraffin were slightly lower than those uncovered. The yeast-mould counts were lower in covered samples compared with samples uncovered. Consequently, the homogenization process (especially 10 MPa) and covering with paraffin in packaging can be used in the production of Kashar cheese.

Revisiting Slotted ALOHA: Density Adaptation in FANETs

    Eroğlu, Alperen; Onur, Ertan

Unmanned aerial vehicles have been widely used in many areas of life. They communicate with each other or infrastructure to provide ubiquitous coverage or assist cellular and sensor networks. They construct flying ad hoc networks. One of the most significant problems in such networks is communication among them over a shared medium. Using random channel access techniques is a useful solution. Another important problem is that the variations in the density of these networks impact the quality of service and introduce many challenges. This paper presents a novel density-aware technique for flying ad hoc networks. We propose Density-aware Slotted ALOHA Protocol that utilizes slotted ALOHA with a dynamic random access probability determined using network density in a distributed fashion. Compared to the literature, this paper concentrates on proposing a three-dimensional, easily traceable model and stabilize the channel utilization performance of slotted ALOHA with an optimized channel access probability to its maximum theoretical level, 1/e, where e is the Euler’s number. Monte-Carlo simulation results validate the proposed approach leveraging aggregate interference density estimator under the simple path-loss model. We compare our protocol with two existing protocols, which are Slotted ALOHA and Stabilized Slotted ALOHA. Comparison results show that the proposed protocol has 36.78% channel utilization performance; on the other hand, the other protocols have 24.74% and 30.32% channel utilization performances, respectively. Considering the stable results and accuracy, this model is practicable in highly dynamic networks even if the network is sparse or dense under higher mobility and reasonable non-uniform deployments.

Extension of TODIM Method Based on Distance Measures of Decomposed Fuzzy Sets

    Köseoğlu, Ali; Şahin, Rıdvan

Fuzzy sets allow elements to have partial membership in a set, represented by a membership value between 0 and 1. This feature enables fuzzy sets to model imprecise or vague concepts. Decomposed fuzzy sets, an extension of fuzzy sets, have introduced a novel perspective in the literature by incorporating the Kano model into risk assessment. These sets have also paved the way for new approaches in decision-making methods, highlighting their functional and dysfunctional elements. In this paper, we propose a distance measure for decomposed fuzzy sets and subsequently extend the TODIM method based on this distance measure to DFSs. Then, we provide a numerical example to illustrate its effectiveness and practicality.

The Effects of Income, Occupation and Education on Household Cigarette Consumption in Turkey; [Türkiye’de Gelir, Meslek ve Eğitimin Hanehalkı Sigara Tüketimi Üzerindeki Etkisi]

    Yilmaz-Uğur, Candan; Saruç, Naci Tolga

This study aims to determine the variables affecting the cigarette consumption of households by employing logistic regression analysis based on the data of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) 2017 Household Budget Survey (HBA). In this model, the variables that affect cigarette consumption, namely, gender, age, education level, marital status, occupation, and the total disposable income earned by the household head in a year, are used. The results of this study indicate that variables of income, occupation and education of the household head affect cigarette consumption in Turkey. In this context, it is expected that focusing on young people, low educated and income groups in the fight against smoking will increase the success of the policies implemented.

Does interpersonal justice enhance organizational loyalty? A theory of justice, organizational citizenship behavior, and individualism: Testimony from Kyrgyzstan

Özbek, Mehmet Ferhat; Yoldash, Mohammad Asif; Tang, Thomas Li-Ping

Research suggests that organizational justice has important impacts on work-related attitudes and behaviors, such as organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). In this article, we explore the extent to which individualism moderates the relationship between organizational justice (procedural, distributive, and interactional justice) and OCB (organizational obedience, participation, and loyalty) among citizens in Kyrgyzstan. Specifically, we are interested to know: Which aspects of justice perceptions excite organizational loyalty? We make additional contributions to the literature because most global researchers know very little about how these Western management constructs prevail in this former Soviet Union country, Kyrgyzstan, an under-researched and under-represented region of the world. Results of our data collected from 402 managers and employees in Kyrgyzstan offer the following discoveries. All three justice constructs are related to OCB. Individualism moderates the relationships between (1) distributive justice and organizational participation, (2) distributive justice and organizational loyalty, and (3) interactional justice and organizational loyalty. We develop an intricate theory with provocative implications: Procedural justice produces obedience only and has no impact on organizational participation and loyalty. High distributive justice enhances high loyalty for people with low individualism. High interactional justice promotes high organizational loyalty for people with high individualism. For “individualists,” interactional justice inspires loyalty. Interestingly, distributive justice “can only buy” participation, but “can’t buy” loyalty. Therefore, for individualists, interactional justice outweighs distributive justice for enhancing organizational loyalty. Based on Kyrgyz citizens’ justice, OCB, and individualism, our theory reveals novel insights regarding culture, money attitude, and intrinsic motivation and provides critical and practical implications to the field of business ethics.

Detection of forest fire using deep convolutional neural networks with transfer learning approach[Formula presented]

    Reis, Hatice Catal; Turk, Veysel

Forest fires caused by natural causes such as climate change, temperature increase, lightning strikes, volcanic activity or human effects are among the world's most dangerous, deadly, and destructive disasters. Detection, prevention, and extinguishing forest fires is challenging. In addition, forest fires can cause habitat destruction that cannot be controlled in time and cause great material and moral losses. Therefore, fast and accurate Detection of forest fires is vital in emergency response. Here, in solving the problem, the transfer learning method from deep learning sub-topics can be used, which allows the application of pre-trained networks to a new problem. The Fire Luminosity Airborne-based Machine learning Evaluation dataset (consisting of forest fire images) obtained by Unmanned Aerial Vehicle was used in this study. In the Detection of forest fire images in the dataset, InceptionV3, DenseNet121, ResNet50V2, NASNetMobile, VGG-19 deep learning algorithms, transfer learning techniques that can produce more successful results than networks trained from scratch, and hybrid proposed with Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory, Gated Recurrent Unit algorithms methods have been applied. In the classification study with the Fire Luminosity Airborne-based Machine learning Evaluation dataset in performance measurement, 97.95% accuracy was obtained from the DenseNet121 model, which was started with random weights. In the transfer learning study using ImageNet weights, satisfactory results were obtained with 99.32% accuracy in the DenseNet121 model. We anticipate that working in forest fire detection and response can be entirely satisfactory.

Control moment gyroscope recoil stabiliser including LQR controller for two-wheeled robot

    Çetin, Gökhan; Ünker, Faruk

The control moment gyroscope’s (CMG) success in emerging damping control under impact load is of great interest for new technical applications. This paper explores the potential use of a two-wheeled robot with an independent weapon, such as an automatic cannon robot, and considers employing CMG with LQR control as a weapon recoil stabiliser for the robot. Cannon turret firing accuracy is crucial for optimising LQR control parameters and enhancing weapon-robot performance. CMG with LQR control effectively reduces the recoil impact loads of the overhead weapon while compensating angular momentum to ensure safety for robot in firing. The precession motion of the gimbal from several milliradians to tens of milliradians is one of some contradictions for describing the effect of the recoil force on robot–gyroscope performance. This paper uses computational methods, combined with CAE software, to study the impact of increasing angular momentum on recoil-induced weapon vibrations.
