Study Objectives: This planned research aimed to identify the conditions for women’s health in women who prefer vegan diets. Method: The study consists of vegan women and the sample consists of a total of 150 women who agreed to participate in the study. The data was collected through a questionnaire consisting of 34 questions. Associations and vegan women were reached out via social media. Results: The average age of the participants was 28.96±8.50 and 33.3% were married. The average year in which women continue to eat vegan is 3.29±5.25. 62% of vegan women stated that their menstrual periods were painless, 87.3% stated that their menstrual periods were regular, and 75.3% stated that they did not have any gynecological diseases. The most common complaints in vegan women are stress and anxiety (27.1%), continuous discharge (27.1), depression (25), polycystic ovary syndrome (20.8), urinary tract infection (20.8), and fibroids (12.5). 18% of vegan women had been diagnosed with anemia, of which 18.8% used anemia treatment. Conclusion: It was found that vegan women did not have many complaints in terms of gynecology while existing complaints were similar or even lower in terms of disease rates seen in the total population. The study group’s high level of education and awareness and regular health checkups are among the factors affecting the results. The low vegan diet averages of the women covered in the study and the fact that a greater number of women were out of reach show the limitations of the study.

Abstract: In this study, the inhibition potential of 3- and 4-arylcoumarin derivatives on Theileria annulata enolase (TaENO) was assessed for the first time in the literature. Firstly, protein stabilization analyses of TaENO were performed and it was found that the enzyme remains stable with the addition of 6 M ethylene glycol at + 4 °C. Inhibitor screening analyses were carried out using 25 coumarin derivatives on highly purified TaENO (> 95%), and four coumarin derivatives [4-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-6,7-dihydroxy-2H-chromen-2-one (C8); 4-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-7,8 dihydroxy-2H-chromen-2-one (C9); 4-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-6,7-dihydroxy-2H-chromen-2 one (C21); and 3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-7,8-dihydroxy-2H-chromen-2-one (C23)] showed the highest inhibitory effects with the IC50 values of 10.450, 13.170, 8.871 and 10.863 µM, respectively. The kinetic results indicated that these compounds inhibited the enzyme by uncompetitive inhibition. In addition, the successful binding of the most potent inhibitor (C21) into TaENO was confirmed by using MALDI-TOF mass spectrophotometry. Molecular docking analyses have predicted that C8 and C21 coumarin derivatives which showed high inhibitory effects on TaENO were interacted with high affinity to the potential regions out of the active site. Taken together, these coumarin derivatives (C8, C9, C21 and C23) are first known potent, nonsubstrate, uncompetitive inhibitors of TaENO and these results will facilitate further in vitro and in vivo analysis toward structure-based drug design studies. The aim of this study is twofold: (1) to identify differences in certain anaerobic parameters (10m sprint, 30m sprint, anaerobic power, and Illinois agility tests) between professional and amateur soccer players, and (2) to determine whether there is a difference in the ACTN3 gene polymorphism between professional and amateur soccer players. Ultimately, the goal is to reveal which parameters contribute to the differentiation in these two aspects. A total of 133 volunteer soccer players, including 71 professionals and 62 amateurs, participated in the research. DNA extraction from buccal epithelial cells was performed using a commercial kit to determine the genetic background of the athletes, and Real-Time PCR was conducted for genotyping. Statistical analysis of the findings obtained from the test results was performed using the SPSS 23 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) package program. The homogeneity of variance of the data was assessed using the Levene Test, and normal distribution analyses were conducted using the Shapiro-Wilk Test. Chi-square and Mann-Whitney U tests were employed for parameter analysis. The significance level was set at p<0.05. Evaluation of the data in our study revealed no statistically significant difference in ACTN3 rs1815739 gene polymorphism between the groups (p>0.05). However, there is a statistically significant difference in anaerobic parameters (10m sprint, 30m sprint, and anaerobic power) except for the Illinois test (p<0.05). In conclusion, our study found that gene polymorphism is not a differentiating factor between professional and amateur soccer players, but speed (10m and 30m) and anaerobic power parameters are differentiating factors.

İncele - MakaleYalnız künye2023Scopus SJRQ3Comparison of Mechanical Properties Obtained for Armor Steels: Conventional Methods vs. Nanoindentation
Ekmekci, Dursun; Cora, Ömer Necati
The mechanical properties of three armor steels, namely Ramor 500, Ramor 550, and Armox Advance, were acquired by nanoindentation and conventional methods, and then the results were compared. To this goal, samples were extracted from different (e.g., undeformed and deformed) zones of the ballistically tested armor plates. Then, nanoindentations were performed at 10-mN maximum load and different maximum indentation depths (50-150 nm). In addition to the hardness and modulus of elasticity values of the examined materials, residual stress values of the samples were calculated through the equations suggested in the literature. These values were then compared with the residual stress measurements obtained with the conventional x-ray diffraction (XRD) - sin2ψ method. Moreover, Charpy V-notch impact tests were performed to calculate the fracture toughness of armor steel samples. Microstructural analysis (e.g., optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, atomic force microscope), surface roughness, and micro-hardness (micro-Vickers) measurements were also obtained. It was noted that hardness values for the Ramor 500 and Ramor 550 armor steels were in the range of 5.5-9 GPa, whereas the hardness values of Armox Advance samples were obtained in the 8.6-10.2 GPa range at a 50-nm indentation depth. The residual stress values obtained with nanoindentation were found to be in quite good agreement with the one obtained through XRD. It was proven that nanoindentation can be used to acquire several mechanical properties through considerably less sample preparation procedure, in an automated, and a more representative manner because of the measurements obtained at multiple points.

Right now, more than ever in our lives, we need to remain optimistic. The present study aimed to examine the validity and reliability of The Optimism Scale, developed by Balcı & Yılmaz (2002), among Iranian university students and to adapt to Iranian culture. The scale is a single-factor scale with 24 items. The participants were selected using an appropriate sampling method, and the sample consisted of 600 Iranian university students (360 females and 240 males) from Tehran and Tabriz cities. Participants’ age ranged from 18 to 24 years (M = 21.58, SD = 1.75). The study findings suggested similarities between Iran and Turkey culture (e.g., religion, language, neighborhood relations). The optimism scale revealed a good construct validity in the Goodness of fit index indicators. The Cronbach alpha internal consistency coefficient for the scale was 0.76 and Convergent validity with happiness was 0.38. In future studies, the scale’s factor structure can be investigated in different samples, such as adolescents and adults.

Bekiroğlu, Sultan; Özdemir, Mehmet; Özyürek, Ercan; Çakır, Günay
Success of model forests, which are organized to support sustainable management of forests in collaboration with environmental, social, and economic forces on forest-based large territories, depends on the development of civil society index dimensions defined as “stakeholder participation,” “organizational structure,” “environment,” “values,” and “impact.” In this study, which was carried out within the scope of Yalova Model Forest, situation analysis strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats analysis was used as a method. Literature and official documents, expert opinions on “stakeholder engagement,” and data obtained through a 30-question survey were used as material. In this study, “historical development,”“legal regulations,” “activities” of Yalova Model Forest and weaknesses, strengths, opportunities, threats of civil society index and strategies pertaining to them were determined. Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats analysis was conducted by forming four separate focus groups for four dimensions of the Yalova Model Forest civil society index. According to the results of this study, the stakeholder participation dimension was concluded to be exceedingly inadequate. This is evidenced by advocate stakeholders’ insufficient participation rates in activities, absence of adverse stakeholders in this reconciliation platform, and the fact that 99% of dormant–indifferent stakeholders are unaware of this organization’s existence. Therefore, stakeholder participation dimension should be strengthened and the strategic plans that will be implemented should be prepared with the participation of stakeholders. Otherwise, Yalova Model Forest’s existence, as a civil society organization, will be jeopardized. However, active advocate stakeholders’ enthusiasm about resolving problems is reassuring for the future of Yalova Model Forest.

İncele - MakaleYalnız künye2023Scopus SJRQ2Effect of Plastic Deformation on the Mechanical Properties of Dual-Phase Steels Using Nanoindentation
Ekmekci, Dursun; Uşun, Altuğ; Cora, Ömer Necati
The mechanical properties of two advanced high-strength steels (AHSS), DP 1000 and DP 1200 dual-phase (DP) grades, under deformed and undeformed conditions, were investigated using nanoindentation, and the results were compared with those obtained from the conventional methods. To this goal, 3-point bending tests were applied to induce deformation in the samples. Before and after these tests, nanoindentations were performed at different forces and indentation depths. In addition to the hardness and modulus of elasticity values of the steels, the residual stresses on the samples after deformation were obtained by using the equations suggested in the literature, also with x-ray diffraction (XRD). Finite element (FE) modeling of 3-point bending and nanoindentation were performed to obtain stress–strain curves of the materials numerically. The stress–strain curves obtained by numerical analysis agree well with those reported in the literature. The variations of the hardness and modulus of elasticity values are narrower for deeper indentation (50 nm versus 200 nm), and the effect of deformation is more pronounced on the modulus of elasticity values (10–30% increase with the deformation) while hardness values increased with the effect of deformation, 10% at most.

Insani, Nur; Ibrahim, Zumiyati Sanu; Karimullah, Suud Sarim; Gönan, Yavuz; Sulastri
This intersectional study investigates the harmonisation of Islamic law and human rights in the context of empowering Muslim women through Islamic economics. This study applies an intersectional approach in carrying out the library research method with literature analysis carried out integratively and comprehensively to explore and review various literature sources relevant to the research topic, including journal articles, books, research reports, policy documents, and other related sources of information. The results show that harmonisation between Islamic law and human rights in empowering Muslim women through Islamic economics significantly impacts achieving gender equality and supporting sustainable development. The complexity of Muslim women's identities influenced by factors such as religion, gender, and social class demands a holistic and integrated policy approach in the economy. While the Islamic economy offers great potential to enhance the role of women as agents of change and key drivers of economic development, the incompatibility between Islamic law and human rights conventions and issues of gender inequality points to the need for more inclusive legal and policy reforms. Identifying and recognising these challenges underscores the importance of adopting a comprehensive and coordinated approach. Specific measures that need to be strengthened include inter-agency cooperation, legal and policy reforms to support better gender equality, capacity building of women in the Islamic economic sector, and raising public awareness on the importance of women's empowerment. As such, this study enriches the academic literature and offers practical guidance for policymakers, stakeholders in the Islamic economy, and the general public in advocating and implementing effective and sustainable women's empowerment.

There has been an increasing demand for healthy snacks, and hummus is preferred as a plant-based product its rich protein content. Its increased consumption, on the other hand, has raised food safety issues with linkages to Listeria outbreak and a recent Salmonella related recall. These were observed in ready-to-eat hummus and indicated the requirement of further processing. Conventional thermal processes might require longer times with negative impact on the quality due to the high viscosity of hummus with its solid-like rheology. For an efficient process design, microwave (MW) processing might be considered with its volumetric heating feature. Therefore, the objective of this study was to present MW application for a decontamination process for hummus. For this purpose, a computational model was developed to determine the temperature change during the process. This model was validated using the experimentally obtained temperature data from samples processed in polystyrene petri dishes (60 g – 8.5 cm in diameter and 1.2 cm in height) in a lab-scale MW system. Color changes were determined, and changes in its viscosity were used to understand the variation in the rheological attributes. Hummus samples were also inoculated with Salmonella cocktail to ≈7–8 log10 CFU/g prior to the MW process, and 70 W MW processing for 5 min (to average temperature of 95.3 °C) resulted in >4 log cycle reduction. Changes in color and rheological attributes were not significant with rather limited mass losses, and these indicated the possible MW processing for hummus decontamination with the need of designing an industrial scale processing.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Scopus SJRQ1Does ecological footprint in ECCAS and ECOWAS converge? Empirical evidence from a panel unit root test with sharp and smooth breaks
Çelik, Orkun; Adali, Zafer; Bari, Bilgin
The costs due to climate change have been increasing day by day. In addition to the risk of losing our planet’s natural assets due to the increasing destructiveness of climate-related natural disasters and extreme climate events, we are also faced with grave economic risks. For this reason, researchers have recently focused on environmental issues. Nevertheless, they generally have investigated developed countries and ignored developing and least developed countries such as African countries. The United Nations (2015) report highlights that African countries should be specially investigated. Hence, the paper analyzes whether the ecological footprint in the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) converges for the period from 1961 to 2017. We employ Bahmani-Oskooee et al.’s (2014) panel unit root test with sharp and smooth breaks. The empirical findings demonstrate that the ecological footprint is stationary in ECCAS and ECOWAS. Stated in other words, the ecological footprint in these countries converges. Therefore, policymakers could implement similar policies to reduce the ecological footprint in these countries. This policy framework paves the way for an effective sustainable development.

- MakaleYalnız künye2023Scopus SJRQ3Influences of Wall Configurations on Earthquake Behavior of Cantilever Retaining Walls Considering Soil-Structure Interaction Effects
Ozturk, Kasif Furkan; Cakir, Tufan; Araz, Onur
Cantilever walls are frequently and necessarily built not only in earthquake prone regions but also on different foundation subsoils with various physical and mechanical characteristics. The response of these structures is a complicated soil-structure interaction (SSI) problem, in which the relative stiffness between the soil and structure is of critical importance. In addition to different soil conditions and earthquake motions, the wall configurations have an important role in the cantilever retaining wall design. Thus, the major objective of this work is to investigate the effects of various configurations on seismic response of the cantilever retaining walls considering SSI. Accordingly, the seismic response of the interaction systems is revealed using the 3D finite element models (FEM) in time domain, assuming linearly elastic behavior for the wall, and elastoplastic behavior for backfill and foundation soil. Viscous absorbent boundaries are employed to both simulate radiation scenario and avoid undesirable wave reflections generated by soil lateral boundaries. Backfill-wall interfaces are modeled using the unidirectional interface elements with nonlinear force-deflection abilities. The interaction systems are analyzed considering three different cantilever wall configurations (inverted T-type, L-type, and the wall with a base key), four different ground motion records, and four different subsoil systems. Nonlinear seismic analyses are carried out to visit how considering the variation of these parameters influences the wall behavior. The results from parametric studies show that the wall configuration, SSI effects and ground motions are remarkably influential on seismic responses of the cantilever walls such as the stresses and horizontal displacements.

Çelik, Sefa; Peker, İskender; Gök-Kısa, A. Cansu; Büyüközkan, Gülçin
Waste management has come to the fore in the whole world with the increasing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic along with concerns about human health, environmental threats, and socio-economic factors, etc. Medical waste is one of the waste types that need special management processes including particularly collection, storage, separation, and disposal. Healthcare activities create a great amount of medical waste deriving from the hospitals. This study aims to determine the hospital that carries out medical waste management in the most effective way in Erzurum, Turkey. To handle intense uncertainty in the evaluation process, the case is analyzed by Intuitionistic Fuzzy Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (IFMCDM) methods. The present study contributes to the literature by focusing on a real case problem under IF environment in a Group Decision-Making (GDM) framework. Additionally, based on the literature review and expert judgments, the evaluation criteria relevant to the case are defined in this paper. To this end, a four-phased integrated methodology that involves Intuitionistic Fuzzy Weighted Averaging (IFWA), IF Analytical Hierarchy Process (IFAHP), IF Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (IFTOPSIS) and One-Dimensional Sensitivity Analysis, is conducted. Firstly, IFWA is aimed to express the significance levels of decision makers (DMs) based on their knowledge, qualifications and experiences. Secondly, IFAHP is used to calculate the importance weights of the decision criteria and IFTOPSIS is preferred to rank the available hospitals. Then, sensitivity analysis is employed to display robustness. According to the results, the most important criteria are Qualified personnel, Health institution infrastructure, and Control of waste, respectively and the most efficient hospital is determined.

Automotive industry in recent years, has gained great importance. In line with this, DP600 and DP800 dual-phase steels and the electrical resistance spot welding method were used in the study. During the experimental trials, different welding currents (6, 7, and 8 kA) were selected and all other welding parameters were kept constant. The effects of the welding parameters on microstructure, hardness, tensile-shear, and cross-tensile strength were analyzed. In the phase measurements, 27.06–29.97% martensite and 70.73–73.85% ferrite phases were found. When the hardness values in the HAZ regions were examined, it was seen that the highest hardness values were 356 ± 5 HV in the DP600 and 451 ± 5 HV in the DP800 with a current intensity of 6 kA. Consequently, it was determined that tensile-shear and cross-tensile strengths had increased in parallel with the increase in the welding current and the highest values were determined as 8 kA–15.91 kN in tensile shear and 8 kA–4.91 kN in cross-tensile strength.
