Sirat, Abdulveli; Bahar, Bilge; Bahar, Necmiye

Triticale is an important alternative crop and is largely grown on marginal lands in Turkey to overcome the shortage of rising animal feed problem. Sometimes Triticale is also used as human food. This study was conducted for two years between 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 to determine some grain quality characteristics of nine different Triticale (Tatlicak-97, for cvs. Presto, Karma-2000, Melez-2001, Mihkam-2002, Ege Yildizi, Alperbey, Umranhanım, and Tacettinbey) cultivars under dry farming conditions at Siran-Gumushane (Eastern Black Sea Region, Turkey). The experiment was conducted with three replications based on the randomized complete block design. According to two-years average, thousand-grain weight of cultivars changed from 38.85-45.12 g, also, hectoliter weight 74.68-77.21 kg hl-1, protein contents 10.56-12.09%, starch contents 64.74-68.19%, moisture contents 9.44-9.72%, ash contents 1.25-1.60%, oil contents 0.79-1.27%, ADF (acid detergent fiber) 3.22-4.39%, NDF (neutral detergent fiber) 15.14-16.88%, potassium (K) contents 0.432-0.527%, magnesium (Mg) contents 0.113-0.135%, and phosphorus (P) contents 0.360-0.387%. In terms of quality characteristics, the maximum thousand-grain weight was obtained from Tacettinbey and Ege Yildizi; the maximum grain yield weight from Tatlicak-97; the maximum hectoliter weight from Tatlicak-97, Ege Yildizi and Mihkam-2002 cultivars; Also, cv. Karma-2000 and Alperbey had the maximum protein contents, and Umranhanım and Mihkam-2002 cultivars had the maximum starch content. It is concluded that studies relating to Agronomic practices of these and other Triticale cultivars would help in improving the life style and the livestock sector of the region.

Aydın Sayılan, Aylin; Demir Doğan, Melike

Introduction: Research has shown that social support has a significant impact on quality of life. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to determine the relationship between perceived social support, perception of disease and quality of life, and the factors affecting these, in patients with cancer in Turkey. Methods: The study data were collected from two hospitals. Data were collected using the face-to-face interview method from patients diagnosed with cancer between March and August 2018. No sampling was performed, and the entire population was studied. Results: The mean age of the patients in the study was 61.37 ± 14.89 years. Married patients had better social support than single individuals (t = 2.129; p = 0.035). Significant negative correlation was found between the illness perception scale and total quality of life scale score (r = −0.163; p = 0.026), and physical well-being (r = −0.224; p = 0.002) and social well-being (r = −0.199; p = 0.006) subscales. Conclusion: Patients’ social support and quality of life were at moderate levels. Married participants had better social support than single participants, and operated participants had better social support than unoperated participants. As illness perception decreased, quality of life, physical well-being and social well-being increased.

Investigation of linear difference equations with random effects

    Merdan, Mehmet; Şişman, Şeyma

In this study, random linear difference equations obtained by transforming the components of deterministic difference equations to random variables are investigated. Uniform, Bernoulli, binomial, negative binomial (or Pascal), geometric, hypergeometric and Poisson distributions have been used for the random effects for obtaining the random behavior of linear difference equations. The random version of the Z-transform, the RZ-transform, has been used to obtain an approximation for the random linear difference equation. Approximate expected values and variances are calculated by using the RZ-transform. The results have been obtained with Maple and are shown in graphs. It is shown that the random Z-transform is an effective tool for the investigation of random linear difference equations.

Optimum shape design of shell structures

Uysal, Habib; Gul, Rustem; Uzman, Umit

A finite element-based shape optimization program has been developed for three-dimensional shell structures and the shape optimization of shell structures has been performed. The shape optimization program is implemented by a job control language and a reliable finite element package program, ANSYS, is used for structural analysis. To achieve the shape optimization, different principles such as structural analysis, automatic mesh generation, sensitivity analysis and mathematical programming are inter-related. The objective is to minimize the weight of the shell structure under constraints that are the maximum value of the von Mises stress in each element and the move limit for each design variable. The design sensitivities are calculated using the finite difference method. The search for the final shape of a structure is performed using the linear programming technique. Several examples are provided.

Production of high-transparent MgO films by radio-frequency sputtering method; [Yüksek geçirgen MgO filmlerin radyo frekansı saçtırma yöntemiyle üretimi]

Şenaslan, Fatih; Çelik, Ayhan; Taşdemir, Muharrem

Magnesium oxide (MgO) thin films were deposited on silicon and glass substrates by the radio frequency (RF) sputtering method. The MgO films were annealed at 400 ⁰C for 4h. The effect of working pressure on the structure and optical properties of MgO films was investigated. Structural characterization of thin films was determined using the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method. XRD results showed the presence of dominant peaks corresponding to the (200) and (220) lattice planes of MgO. However, peaks corresponding to (111), (311) and (222) lattice planes of the MgO also appeared in the films deposited at low pressure. It was determined that the average crystal size decreased as the working pressure reduced, while the deposition rate increased. SEM analysis showed that the microstructure of the nano-spherical MgO film transformed into a coarse-grained nano-pyramidal shape after annealing. The optical properties of MgO films were investigated by UV-Vis spectroscopy. Accordingly, it was determined that the absorption threshold of the films was around 310 nm wavelength and the optical band gap of the films varied between 4.07 and 4.14 eV. As a result, MgO films with high transmittance reaching an average of 95% in the visible region were obtained.

Diagnosis of COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients by classifying only a single cough sound

    Melek, Mesut

In the last month of 2019, a new virus emerged in China, spreading rapidly and affecting the whole world. This virus, which is called corona, is the most contagious type of virus that humanity has ever encountered. The virus has caused a huge crisis worldwide as it leads to severe infections and eventually death in humans. On March 11, 2020, it was announced by the World Health Organization that a COVID-19 outbreak has occurred. Computer-aided digital technologies, which eliminate many problems and provide convenience in people's lives, did not leave humanity alone in this regard and rushed to provide a solution for this unfortunate event. One of the important aspects in which computer-aided digital technologies can be effective is the diagnosis of the disease. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), which is a standard and precise technique for diagnosing the disease, is an expensive and time-consuming method. Moreover, its availability is not the same all over the world. For this reason, it can be very attractive and important to distinguish the COVID-19 disease from a cold or flu through a cough sound analysis via smartphones which have entered into the lives of many people in recent years. In this study, we proposed a machine learning-based system to distinguish patients with COVID-19 from non-COVID-19 patients by analyzing only a single cough sound. Two different data sets were used, one accessible for the public and the other available on request. After combining the data sets, the features were obtained from the cough sounds using the mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) method, and then, they were classified with seven different machine learning classifiers. To determine the optimum values of hyperparameters for MFCCs and classifiers, the leave-one-out cross-validation (LOO-CV) strategy was implemented. Based on the results, the k-nearest neighbors classifier based on the Euclidean distance (kNN Euclidean) with the accuracy rate, sensitivity of COVID-19, sensitivity of non-COVID-19, F-measure, and area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.9833, 1.0000, 0.9720, 0.9799, and 0.9860, respectively, is more successful than other classifiers. Finally, the best and most effective features were determined for each classifier using the sequential forward selection (SFS) method. According to the results, the proposed system is excellent compared with similar studies in the literature and can be easily used in smartphones and facilitate the diagnosis of COVID-19 patients. In addition, since the used data set includes reflex and unconscious coughs, the results showed that conscious or unconscious coughing has no effect on the diagnosis of COVID-19 patients based on the cough sound.

Performance Comparison of Various Chicane Types: A Driving Simulator Study

Aydin, Metin Mutlu; Gunay, Banihan; Akgol, Kadir

Urban streets are becoming noisy, less safe and unattractive places due to high traffic volumes and vehicular speeds. Especially, high speeds causes many problems such as traffic accidents, noise, etc. To prevent these problems and negative effects of speeding, traffic calming measures have been widely used in many developed countries. In this study, the effectiveness of ten most common chicane types on speed limit compliance were examined by comparing and ranking chicanes according to their performance. For this purpose, a “Safety Index” was developed and an Ordinary Least Square Regression analysis was performed to identify safest chicane types for undivided two-lane and divided four-lane roads by using various parameters. Additionally, statistical tests were conducted to determine the most important driver characteristics of drivers before and inside the chicanes. For the analyses, all necessary data were obtained from the driving tests of 106 volunteers using a driving simulator. For the simulation scenarios, Akdeniz University’s (Antalya/Turkey) campus roads were selected as a case area. The results showed that Chicane Types 2 (CT-2) and 7 (CT-7) have the highest Safety Index values (0.69 and 0.98) and they were found to be the most proper CTs for the undivided and divided roads, respectively. From the statistical tests, it was also found that education level, gender and driving license duration were found to be the statistically significant parameters on speed choice for the most proper chicane types. Additionally, it was concluded that the most important driver characteristics are determined as age (has a negative effect) and gender (to be male has a positive effect) of drivers before and inside the chicanes. All these findings show that the investigation of different CTs has a great potential to reduce speeds and ensure safety in urban minor roads to limit vehicle speeds.

The impact of dietary tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus) on serum apelin, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, cardiac troponin concentrations and histopathology of liver tissue in laying hens housed at different stocking densities

Bayraktar, Bulent; Tekce, Emre; Kaya, Hacer; Karaalp, Musa; Turunc, Eylul

Due to its association with several other stress factors (poultry house gases, inadequate ventilation, heat, cold and poor hygiene), the high stocking density is a major stress factor that adversely affects the health and performance of poultry and the quality of the poultry products. Therefore, this experimental study was aimed at analysing the impact of different doses of dietary tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus) on the serum apelin, plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor (p-BDNF), and cardiac troponin I (cTnI) concentrations, and the correlation between these indicators in laying hens housed at different stocking densities. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of adding tarragon in different ratios to laying hen rations in the 2ndovulation period on the cTnI, apelin, and BDNF hormone concentrations and the liver histopathology. The experiment was carried out over a period of eight weeks, with 192 Lohman Brown commercial hybrids at 50 weeks of age. Eight groups (four replicates each), composed of laying hens of equal body weight, which were housed at stocking densities of 580 cm2/hen and 810 cm2/hen and received 0, 1, 5 and 10 mmol/kg of tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus) in the feed, were established. At the end of the trial, 96 of the housed egg-laying hens (3 birds in each subgroup, a total of 12 birds in each group) were randomly selected and blood samples were taken from the vena subcutanea ulnaris. The samples collected were analysed for the apelin, p-BDNF, and cTnI contents. The analysis results demonstrated that tarragon supplementation had no effect on the serum apelin, p-BDNF and cTnI concentrations (P > 0.05). The Sub-Groups ST1, ST1.2, and ST6 presented with severe hyperaemia of the sinusoidal, portal and acinar blood vessels, whilst the hyperaemia of these blood vessels was moderate in Sub-Group ST12. Apelin, BDNF, and cTnI can act as protective factors against negative consequences of stress (e.g., stocking density or heat stress).

Sodium silicate effect on setting properties, strength behavior and microstructure of cemented coal fly ash backfill

Cavusoglu, Ibrahim; Yilmaz, Erol; Yilmaz, Ali Osman

Representing an engineered mixture of coal fly ash, cement and water, cemented coal fly ash backfill (CCB) is typically employed for filling the openings created after coal excavation in the earth. A high rate of productivity for coal mines requires a high early-age strength backfill design. Therefore, the use of admixtures in CCB is key for accelerating the backfill setting time and augmenting short-and long-term strength. This study offers the effect of sodium silicate (SS) as an accelerator on early age mechanical and microstructure properties of CCB. SS-based admixture was used for a dosage of 0.5, 1 and 1.5 wt% in CCB that contains 25 wt% ordinary Portland cement OPC and 75 wt% coal fly ash. Backfill setting time was done by using the Vicat system while its strength and pore structure were measured by using the uniaxial compressive strength test, and scanning electron microscopy and Hg intrusion porosimetry. Results display that use of SS in CCB increases its short-term strength gain up to 14% and shortens the mining cycle by cutting its setting time up to 58%. The microstructure analyses also indicate that CCB formulated with SS has a finer pore structure than that without admixture. The outcomes of the present study will be advantageous to evaluate both setting time and strength behavior of CCB used in coal mines, thereby causing the effective backfill plan in terms of money saving and easy operation.

A Two-Phase Approach using Mask R-CNN and 3D U-Net for High-Accuracy Automatic Segmentation of Pancreas in CT Imaging

Dogan, Ramazan Ozgur; Dogan, Hulya; Bayrak, Coskun; Kayikcioglu, Temel

Background and objective: The size, shape, and position of the pancreas are affected by the patient characteristics such as age, sex, adiposity. Owing to more complex anatomical structures (size, shape, and position) of the pancreas, specialists have some difficulties in the analysis of pancreatic diseases (diabetes, pancreatic cancer, pancreatitis). Therefore, the treatment of the disease requires enormous time and depends on the experience of specialists. In order to decrease the rate of pancreatic disease deaths and to assist the specialist in the analysis of pancreatic diseases, automatic pancreas segmentation techniques have been actively developed in the research article for many years. Methods: Although the rapid growth of deep learning and proving satisfactory performance in many medical image processing and computer vision applications, the maximum Dice Similarity Coefficients (DSC) value of these techniques related to automatic pancreas segmentation is only around 85% due to complex structure of the pancreas and other factors. Contrary to previous techniques which are required significantly higher computational power and memory, this paper suggests a novel two-phase approach for high-accuracy automatic pancreas segmentation in computed tomography (CT) imaging. The proposed approach consists of two phases; (1) Pancreas Localization, where the rough pancreas position is detected on the 2D CT slice by adopting Mask R-CNN model, (2) Pancreas Segmentation, where the segmented pancreas region is produced by refining the candidate pancreas region with 3D U-Net on the 2D sub-CT slices generated in the first phase. Both qualitative and quantitative assessments of the proposed approach are performed on the NIH data set. Results: In order to evaluate the achievement of the recommended approach, a total of 16 different automatic pancreas segmentation techniques reported in the literature are compared by utilizing performance assessment procedures which are Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC), Jaccard Index (JI), Precision (PRE), Recall (REC), Pixel Accuracy (ACC), Specificity (SPE), Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) and Area under ROC curve (AUC). The average values of DSC, JI, REC and ACC are computed as 86.15%, 75.93%, 86.27%, 86.27% and 99.95% respectively, which are the best values among well-established studies for automatic pancreas segmentation. Conclusion: It is demonstrated with qualitative and quantitative results that our suggested two-phase approach creates more favorable results than other existing approaches.

Integrated Reporting and Combined Assurance: A Qualitative Research on the Awareness in Turkey*

    Selimoglu, Seval Kardes; Yesilcelebi, Gul

Purpose: The aim of this study is to reveal the opinions of the auditors, academicians, and institutions that published integrated reports regarding the development and execution of the assurance process of integrated reports. Design/methodology/approach: For this purpose, interviews were conducted using qualitative research technique to determine awareness about integrated reporting and combined assurance. Within the scope of the research, semi-structured interviews were conducted with six auditors, five academicians, and five workers in institutions that published integrated reports. Qualitative data analysis method was used to analyze the data. Findings: As a result of the research, combined assurance process criteria were proposed in the integrated reports which in line with the opinions of the participants. Originality/value: Institutions around the world are increasingly publishing integrated reports. However, when institutions publish integrated reports, there is no clear standard or any guidance on how to ensure the reliability of these reports. It is seen that AA1000, ISAE3000, GRI Standards, and some local standards are used to provide assurance. At this point, the combined assurance model can be used for the reliability of the information in the integrated reports. Integrated reporting and combined assurance are still relatively new concepts in Turkey. Furthermore, this study is important in terms of the lack of studies on how to provide combined assurance for integrated report when scanned related literature in Turkey. Although readily integrated reporting continued in Turkey, it continues to be an area of application is still under development. In particular, the research reflects the level of integrated reporting awareness and how to ensure assurance of these reports.

    Mucositis treatment

    Doğan, Melike Demir

Mucositis is defined as inflammatory and/or ulcerative lesions of the oral and/or gastrointestinal system. It is one of the side effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy used in cancer treatment. The incidence rate of mucositis is 15-40% in standard-dose chemotherapy, 76-100% in high-dose chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant, and 100% in radiation therapy applied for head-neck. While oral mucositis can cause pain as well as sensitivity in mouth and throat, it can also severely affect oral functions such as swallowing, taste, and speaking. Severe mucositis leads to increase the pain in the oral mucosa. Many pharmacological and non-pharmacological options are available to treat mucositis. The literature reveals studies looking at pharmacological approaches including oral care involving 0.9% NaCl and NaHCO3, benzydamine hydrochloride, saline mouthwashes, calcium phosphate mouthwashes, magic mouthwash, and mouthwashes containing G-CSF and GM-CSF. Likewise, studies looking at non-pharmacological approaches focus on cryotherapy, low energy laser treatment, hypnosis, herbal approaches, honey, and black mulberry molasses.

A reduced variance unsupervised ensemble learning algorithm based on modern portfolio theory

    Ünlü, Ramazan; Xanthopoulos, Petros

Unsupervised ensemble learning or consensus clustering has gained popularity due to its ability to combine multiple clustering solutions into a single solution that is robust and often performs better than the individual ones. There have been several approaches to consensus clustering including voting and weighted voting algorithmic schemes. Although there have been several algorithms for adjusting the weights of a consensus clustering all of them are tuned based on some performance characteristic associated with clustering accuracy. In this paper, we propose a method for incorporating weights by taking into consideration the intra algorithmic variability i.e. algorithms that provide solutions with very different performance upon multiple runs. The methodology is inspired by modern portfolio theory and more specifically from Markowitz model for asset allocation where one is trying to identify the most efficient portfolio through the solution of a convex optimization problem. Here, efficiency is defined as the minimum amount of risk for an expected return. We apply this method to different datasets and compare with respect to performance and robustness. The proposed scheme appears to achieve competitive average performance with very low variability.

Quadrotor Flight System Design using Collective and Differential Morphing with SPSA and ANN

    Kose, Oguz; Oktay, Tugrul

Quadrotor modeling has been done with collective and differential morphing. Quadrotor initial state and morphing states are drawn in the Solidworks program. Newton-Euler approximation was used for quadrotor modeling. The mass and moment of inertia values required for modeling and simulation were obtained from the Solidworks program. Matlab / Simulink environment and state-space model approaches are used for simulations. A simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) algorithm was used to determine the quadrotor morphing rates. If the morphing state obtained by SPSA is not included in the values obtained from the drawings, here it is provided to find the moments of inertia with the method based on learning by using the data obtained with the Artificial Neural Network(ANN). Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) is used as the quadrotor control algorithm. PID coefficients are also determined by SPSA.

The Relationship between Body Mass Index and Eating Disorder Risk and Intuitive Eating among Young Adults

Yılmaz, Hacı Ömer; Zemzemoglu, Tuba Eda Arpa

Background: Obesity is a serious health problem that threatens public health. There are limited researches exploring the relationship between obesity and eating disorder risk and intuitive eating. The purpose of this study was to determine the rate of eating disorder risk and obesity, and identify the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and eating disorder risk and intuitive eating among young adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 1216 young adults. The data were obtained through a questionnaire consisted of three sections of socio-demographic information in the first part, Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2) in second part and Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26) in third part. Weight, height, and BMI of participants were also measured by researchers. Results: The overall overweight/obesity rate of the participants was 16% (male=25.9%; female=10.9%). The rate of eating disorders risk was 24.3% in general (male=21.5%; female=25.4%). Overweight/obese had higher eating disorders risk than normal and underweight (26.7%, 23.8%, 21.6%, respectively). IES-2 score of underweight was significantly higher than overweight/obese (3.33±0.35, 3.20±0.37, respectively). Conclusion: This is the first study to examine the relationship between BMI and EAT-26 subscale showing that BMI was positively correlated with EAT-26 and negatively was correlated with IES-2 score. Therefore, BMI may be affected by eating behaviors and intuitive eating. Also, intuitive eating can be a new method of eating, and weight control and management.

Forward converter-based distributed global maximum power point tracking in partial shading conditions

    Başoğlu, Mustafa Engin

Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is an essential part of a photovoltaic (PV) power generation systems to obtain the possible biggest efficiency. In partial shading conditions (PSCs), distributed MPPT strategy is used to eliminate mismatching cases between PV modules and load. In this study, forward converter-based distributed MPPT approach is presented for small power module-level and submodule-level MPPT applications. First, operation principles of a forward converter are explained for an MPPT application. Then, performance of a forward converter is evaluated by perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm for module-level and submodule-level MPPT systems in MATLAB/Simulink. Simulation results show that in module-level MPPT technique, forward converter cannot track global maximum power point (MPP) in some PSCs. On the other hand, submodule-level MPPT guarantees global MPPT (GMPPT). Average tracking efficiencies are calculated as 71.24% and 95.34% for module-level and submodule-level MPPT, respectively. That is, submodule-level MPPT outperforms module-level MPPT. On the other hand, submodule-level MPPT is more expensive solution since hardware requirements are very high compared with the module-level MPPT strategy.

OPPORTUNITIES PROVIDED BY REMOTE SENSING DATA FOR WATERSHED MANAGEMENT: EXAMPLE OF KONYA CLOSED BASIN

Yagmur, Nur; Tanik, Aysegul; Tuzcu, Aylin; Musaoglu, Nebiye; Erten, Esra; Bilgilioglu, Baha

Remote sensing data provides great opportunities in various steps of watershed management like characterization of watersheds that bear dynamic structure with large land, monitoring the physical variations within the basin, and conducting various scenario analyses to detect the response of the basin. The high resolution capacity of today’s satellite images enables the production of land use/cover data of a basin in shorter period of time. In this study, it is aimed to demonstrate various aspects of remote sensing technology to be used in watershed management studies. For that purpose, MODIS, Landsat and Sentinel satellite data with different spatial resolutions were used to monitor the surface water bodies in Konya Closed Basin (KCB) of Turkey. In addition, high spatial Worldview-3 satellite data were used to extract detailed information about Akgol Wetland located in KCB. A methodology was developed on the utilization of remote sensing technology consisting of 3 main groups; field surveys, satellite images and ancillary data. In the study, 5 different spectral indices were applied to Sentinel 2 data to determine the areas of surface water bodies. Moreover, Support Vector Machine (SVM) method was applied to Worldview-3 satellite image to classify Akgol Wetland and its vicinity. The importance of establishing watershed information system together with a database reflecting the characteristics of watersheds was underlined. Various examples were given from KCB that is known as the largest closed basin of the country with a surface area of 5.426.480 ha. The basin owns 17 water bodies out of which 2 of them are RAMSAR sites. Within the scope of the study, information obtained from optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite images in the basin were discussed. More accurate results were achieved by Sentinel 2 than MODIS and Landsat data. In addition, detailed information about the wetland were extracted by means of Worldview-3 data and water bodies were monitored in all weather conditions via Sentinel 1 SAR data.
