    Bayram, B.; Erdem, F.; Akpinar, B.; Ince, A.K.; Bozkurt, S.; Catal Reis, H.; Seker, D.Z.

Coastal monitoring plays a vital role in environmental planning and hazard management related issues. Since shorelines are fundamental data for environment management, disaster management, coastal erosion studies, modelling of sediment transport and coastal morphodynamics, various techniques have been developed to extract shorelines. Random Forest is one of these techniques which is used in this study for shoreline extraction.. This algorithm is a machine learning method based on decision trees. Decision trees analyse classes of training data creates rules for classification. In this study, Terkos region has been chosen for the proposed method within the scope of "TUBITAK Project (Project No: 115Y718) titled "Integration of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for Sustainable Coastal Zone Monitoring Model – Three-Dimensional Automatic Coastline Extraction and Analysis: Istanbul-Terkos Example". Random Forest algorithm has been implemented to extract the shoreline of the Black Sea where near the lake from LANDSAT-8 and GOKTURK-2 satellite imageries taken in 2015. The MATLAB environment was used for classification. To obtain land and water-body classes, the Random Forest method has been applied to NIR bands of LANDSAT-8 (5th band) and GOKTURK-2 (4th band) imageries. Each image has been digitized manually and shorelines obtained for accuracy assessment. According to accuracy assessment results, Random Forest method is efficient for both medium and high resolution images for shoreline extraction studies.

The impossibility of producing I-131 from its daughter Xe-131 by photonuclear reactions

Bayram, Tuncay; Akkoyun, Serkan; Çelik, Necati; Haciislamoǧlu, Emel; Uruk, Serhat; Şentürk, Şevki

131I is one of the radioisotopes in nuclear medicine procedures for diagnostic and treatment purposes. It decays to 131Xe by emitting beta particles. In this study, we have investigated the reproduction possibility of 131I from 131Xe by using different reactions, including a photonuclear reaction step. We have used TALYS computer program for calculating cross-sections of the reactions. It was seen that it was not an easy task to reproduce 131I from its decay product 131Xe because of low reaction cross-section values. According to the results, we have seen that the calculations are in harmony with the TENDL 2014 database.

Single production of the excited muons at the SPPC-based ultimate μp collider

    Cąliskan, Abdullatif

Single production potential of the excited muons at the SPPC-based ultimate muon-proton collider with center-of-mass energy of 116.6 TeV was analyzed. We calculated the production cross-sections and the decay widths of the excited muons with the process of μp → μX → γμX. We obtained the normalized transverse momentum and pseudorapidity distributions of the final-state particles to attain the kinematical cuts for the discovery of the excited muons. With these cuts, we determined the mass limits. It was shown that the discovery limits on the mass of the excited muons are 19.6 and 10.1 TeV for λ = mμ and λ=50 TeV, respectively.

Modeling of Co(II) adsorption by artificial bee colony and genetic algorithm

Öztürk, Nurcan; Sentürk, Hasan Basri; Gündogdu, Ali; Duran, Celal

In this work, it was investigated the usability of artificial bee colony (ABC) and genetic algorithm (GA) in modeling adsorption of Co(II) onto drinking water treatment sludge (DWTS). DWTS, obtained as inevitable byproduct at the end of drinking water treatment stages, was used as an adsorbent without any physical or chemical pre-treatment in the adsorption experiments. Firstly, DWTS was characterized employing various analytical procedures such as elemental, FT-IR, SEM-EDS, XRD, XRF and TGA/DTA analysis. Then, adsorption experiments were carried out in a batch system and DWTS's Co(II) removal potential was modelled via ABC and GA methods considering the effects of certain experimental parameters (initial pH, contact time, initial Co(II) concentration, DWTS dosage) called as the input parameters. The accuracy of ABC and GA method was determined and these methods were applied to four different functions: quadratic, exponential, linear and power. Some statistical indices (sum square error, root mean square error, mean absolute error, average relative error, and determination coefficient) were used to evaluate the performance of these models. The ABC and GA method with quadratic forms obtained better prediction. As a result, it was shown ABC and GA can be used optimization of the regression function coefficients in modeling adsorption experiments.

A new use of the ant system algorithm for the max-mean dispersion problem

    Cura, Tunchan; Özdemir, Muhlis

This study addresses an NP-hard problem known as the max-mean dispersion problem (MaxMeanDP), which belongs to a well-known class of diversity problems. In view of the increasing importance of parallel computing, this study proposes an ant system (AS) approach to the MaxMeanDP in which ants execute the search process in parallel. Moreover, by proposing a rather different use of the pheromone trail and visibility compared to the original AS, a new AS algorithm is introduced that runs in parallel. Our analysis indicates that the new use of the pheromone trail and visibility significantly contributes to the quality of the solution. The results show that the proposed method is effective, efficient and comparable to other approaches.

Determination of the genesis of tertiary aged volcanic rocks in the gümüşhane (Ne Türkiye) with gamma ray spectrometer method

    Maden, N.; Akaryali, E.; Aydınçakır, E.

Eastern Pontide orogenic belt located in the Alp-Himalayan fold belt is divided into three subzones such as northern, southern and axial zones. These zones are controlled by the NE, NW and E-W directed fault systems. The study area whose geodynamic evolution is still debated is situated in the southern zone of the Eastern Pontide Orogenic belt. The views proposed for the geodynamic evolution of the eastern Pontides can be grouped into three. The geodynamic evolution of the region and genesis of the volcanic rocks are evaluated with a total 305 gamma ray spectrometer measurements surveyed at the Tertiary aged rocks in the Gümüşhane area. Total abundances of thorium ranges from 0.12ppm to 2.97 ppm, from 0.27ppm to 2.32 ppm for uranium, and from 0.09 % to 8.72 % for potassium. The average contents of radioelement concentrations computed over all measurements is: 0.85 (±0.33sd), 1.2(±0.54sd) ppm and 0.57 (±0.63sd) %, for U, Th and K, respectively. Numerical results verify that the parental magma of the Tertiary aged volcanic rocks probably derived from an enriched mantle originated from upper continental crust, previously metasomatized by subducted derived fluids..

Turan, Ibrahim; Demir, Selim; Kilinc, Kagan; Burnaz, Nesibe Arslan; Yaman, Serap Ozer; Akbulut, Kubra; Mentese, Ahmet; Aliyazicioglu, Yuksel; Deger, Orhan

Background: Morus nigra L. belongs to the family Moraceae and is frequently used in traditional medicine. Numerous studies have investigated the antiproliferative effects of various extracts of different Morus species, but studies involving the in vitro cytotoxic effect of M. nigra extract are very limited. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the phenolic composition and antioxidant activity of dimethyl sulfoxide extract of M. nigra (DEM) and to investigate, for the first time, the probable cytotoxic effect in human prostate adenocarcinoma (PC-3) cells together with the mechanism involved. Methods: Total polyphenolic contents (TPC), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and phenolic compounds of DEM were evaluated using spectrophotometric procedures and HPLC. The cytotoxic effect of DEM on PC-3 cells was revealed using the MTT assay. Mechanisms involved in the cytotoxic effect of DEM on PC-3 cells were then investigated in terms of apoptosis, mitochondrial membrane potential and cell cycle using flow cytometry, while caspase activity was investigated using luminometric analysis. Results: TPC and FRAP values were 20.7 ± 0.3 mg gallic acid equivalents and 48.8 ± 1.6 mg trolox equivalents per g sample, respectively. Ascorbic acid and chlorogenic acid were the major phenolic compounds detected at HPLC analysis. DEM arrested the cell cycle of PC-3 cells at the G1 phase, induced apoptosis via increased caspase activity and reduced mitochondrial membrane potential. Conclusions: Our results indicate that M. nigra may be a novel candidate for the development of new natural product based therapeutic agents against prostate cancer.

Two-and-three-dimensional crustal thickness of the Eastern Pontides (NE Turkey)

Maden, Nafiz; Gelişli, Kenan; Eyüboǧlu, Yener; Bektaş, Osman

The Eastern Pontide orogenic belt is divided into three subzones (northern, southern and axial zones) based on present lithologies and facies associations. NE-SW-, NW-SE- and E-W-trending fault systems, which play an important role in palaeotectonics and neotectonics of the Eastern Pontides separate these zones. Three different methods were used to estimate the Moho depth from observed gravity value, namely (i) empirical relationship between Moho depth and Bouguer anomaly; (ii) spectral analysis of the radial wave number and; (iii) by the gravity inversion method. Power spectrum, a statistical approach, is a widely used technique to determine the depth of geological sources successfully. The empirical linear relations between the Bouguer anomalies and seismically determined crustal thicknesses have been used to compute depths to the Conrad and Moho discontinuities, which are consistent with the average depths obtained from the power spectrum method. The crustal structure was also determined from the inversion of a Bouguer anomaly profile along longitude 39°. Gravity inversion results are consistent with those obtained from the empirical relations and power spectrum methods. We calculated the maximum crustal thickness of 43.8 km in the studied region by using the gravity inversion method, which also showed that crustal thickness increases from north to south.

Formal Assessment and Measurement of Data Utilization and Value for Mines

Rogers, W. Pratt; Kahraman, M. Mustafa; Dessureault, Sean

Most contemporary mines have considerable amounts of data. Structured and unstructured large data sets are colloquially named big data. Much of the data in mining operations come from a variety of systems, each with different databases and reporting environments. Standard technology deployments create a “silo-ification” of data leading to poor system benefit. Through modern server monitoring and systematic approach, data utilization and value can quantifiably be measured. The Data Utilization and Value Index (DUVI) can quantify business intelligence best practices and user interaction. This study seeks to provide a data management tool to measure data utilization across the process of converting data into action.

Excited Neutrino Search Potential of the FCC-Based Electron-Hadron Colliders

    Caliskan, A.

The production potential of the excited neutrinos at the FCC-based electron-hadron colliders, namely, the ERL60⊗FCC with √s = 3.46 TeV, the ILC⊗FCC with √s = 10 TeV, and the PWFA-LC⊗FCC with √s = 31.6 TeV, has been analyzed. The branching ratios of the excited neutrinos have been calculated for the different decay channels and shown that the dominant channel is ∗→eW+. We have calculated the production cross sections with the process of ep→∗q→eW+q and the decay widths of the excited neutrinos with the process of ∗→eW+. The signals and corresponding backgrounds are studied in detail to obtain accessible mass limits. It is shown that the discovery limits obtained on the mass of the excited neutrino are 2452 GeV for Lint=100 fb-1, 5635 GeV for Lint=10 fb-1 (6460 GeV for Lint=100 fb-1), and 10200 GeV for Lint=1 fb-1 (13960 GeV for Lint=10 fb-1), for the center-of-mass energies of 3.46, 10, and 31.6 TeV, respectively.

Ozkan, Mehtap Tugce; Aliyazicioglu, Rezzan; Demir, Selim; Misir, Sema; Turan, Ibrahim; Yildirmis, Sermet; Aliyazicioglu, Yuksel

Background: Primula vulgaris has been used in traditional treatment, and its biological functions are attributed to its polyphenolics content. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the phenolics composition and the antioxidant activity of water extract of P. vulgaris (WEP) and to determine its probable preventive effects against H2O2-induced DNA damage in human fibroblast cells. Methods: The total polyphenolic content (TPC), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and radical scavenging activity of WEP were determined using spectrophotometric methods. Phenolic compounds and antigenotoxic effects of WEP were evaluated using HPLC and comet assay, respectively. Results: The TPC and FRAP values of WEP were 15.023 ± 0.84 mg gallic acid and 82.63 ± 0.31 μM trolox per g sample, respectively. ρ-coumaric acid and rutin were detected as major phenolics. Moreover, WEP reducedH2O2-induced DNA damage in a concentration dependent manner in fibroblast cells compared to the positive controls (only 20 μMH2O2 treatment). Conclusions: Primula vulgaris can be used in food, cosmetics, and drug industries because of its antioxidant and antigenotoxic activities.

The effect of plasma electrolytic oxidation process parameters on the tribocorrosion properties of TiO2 coatings

Sukuroglu, Ebru Emine; Farzi, Hamed; Sukuroglu, Suleyman; Totik, Yasar; Arslan, Ersin; Efeoglu, Ihsan

Despite the fact that Titanium and its alloys are materials which have excellent corrosion-resistant properties, they have poor wear and friction performance under tribological conditions. The aim of this study is to find suitable parameters for the surface treatment of Cp-Ti substrates which are used under saline environment. In this study, TiO2 coatings were grown on Cp-Ti substrates at different frequencies which are parameters of the coating process. Due to its low cost and ability to achieve high thicknesses, The Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) method was applied to grow TiO2 coatings. The microstructures, morphology, and crystallographic structure were analyzed using SEM and XRD. Tribocorrosion properties of the coatings were investigated using a combination of the pin-on-disk wear test and potentiodynamic polarization test units. The frequency is known to have a strong impact on the PEO process. The impacts of frequency changes on the PEO coating performance were examined under a constant voltage. As result, the increase of the frequency caused smaller pores and cracks in the surface morphology of the coating and at the same time this yielded an increment on the tribocorrosion behavior of the coating.

9,10-Dibromo-N-aryl-9,10-dihydro-9,10-[3,4]epipyrroloanthracene-12,14-diones: Synthesis and Investigation of Their Effects on Carbonic Anhydrase Isozymes I, II, IX, and XII

Göksu, Haydar; Topal, Meryem; Keskin, Ali; Gültekin, Mehmet S.; Çelik, Murat; Gülçin, Ilhami; Tanc, Muhammet; Supuran, Claudiu T.

N-substituted maleimides were synthesized from maleic anhydride and primary amines. 1,4-Dibromo-dibenzo[e,h]bicyclo-[2,2,2]octane-2,3-dicarboximide derivatives (4a-f) were prepared by the [4+2] cycloaddition reaction of dibromoanthracenes with the N-substituted maleimide derivatives. The carbonic anhydrase (CA, EC 4.2.1.1) inhibitory effects of the new derivatives were assayed against the human (h) isozymes hCA I, II, IX, and XII. All tested bicyclo dicarboximide derivatives exhibited excellent inhibitory effects in the nanomolar range, with Ki values in the range of 117.73-232.87 nM against hCA I and of 69.74-111.51 nM against hCA II, whereas they were low micromolar inhibitors against hCA IX and XII. A series of 9,10-dibromo-N-aryl-9,10-dihydro-9,10-[3,4]epipyrroloanthracene-12,14-diones (4a-f) were synthesized from N-substituted maleimide derivatives and 9,10-dibromoanthracene. Compounds 4a-f were assayed against human carbonic anhydrases (hCA) IX and XII, which are the two tumor-associated isozymes, and hCA I and II, which represent the most common off-targets for the development of selective anticancer CA inhibitors.

Resistance of Axially Loaded T- and X-Joints of Elliptical Hollow Sections at Elevated Temperatures – A Finite Element Study

    Ozyurt, E.; Wang, Y.C.

This study presents the results of a numerical study to develop a method to calculate the static strength of welded Elliptical Hollow Section (EHS) joints at elevated temperatures. Extensive numerical simulations using the non-linear finite element package, ABAQUS v6.14–1 on EHS T- and X-joints under brace axial compression or tension and pre-stress in chord member with different type of joint orientations at elevated temperatures over a wide range of diameter ratio have been conducted. The adjustments required to be made to the equations of joint resistance under ambient temperature conditions for estimating joint resistance at elevated temperature conditions are investigated in this study. The FE simulation results have been compared with the calculation results of a number of existing methods at ambient temperature. It has been found that the method proposed by Packer et al. gives the best agreement with the authors' simulation results at ambient temperature. At elevated temperatures, for T- and X- joints with braces in compression welded to the wide sides of chords, replacing the ambient temperature yield strength of steel by the elevated temperature value in the current design method overestimates the ultimate load carrying capacity of axially loaded EHS T- and X-joints due to inability of the ambient temperature calculation equations to take into consideration EHS flattening at high temperatures. For these cases, it is recommended to calculate the joint strength reduction factor at elevated temperatures according to the Young's modulus of steel.
