Production and Characterization of Bacterial Cellulose from Citrus Peels

    Güzel, Melih; Akpınar, Özlem

Cellulose is the most common polymer in the world, formed by β-1,4 linked glucopyranose units. In this study, citrus peels (lemon, mandarin, orange and grapefruit) were used for the production of bacterial cellulose (BC). The peels were hydrolyzed with dilute acid and hydrolysates were used for BC production. The production of BC was carried out at 28–32 °C for 21 days under static conditions with Komagataeibacter hansenii GA2016. BC yields were found to be between 2.06 and 3.92%. It was found that the FTIR spectra of the BCs produced in citrus peel hydrolysates were similar to BC produced in the commercially available nutrients. The result of this study showed that all the BCs produced from citrus peels were characterized to have high water holding capacity, thin fiber diameter, high the thermal stability and high crystallinity.

Ambient Vibration-Based System Identification of a Medieval Masonry Bastion for Health Assessment using Nonlinear Analyses

Altunişik, Ahmet Can; Genç, Ali Fuat; Günaydin, Murat; Adanur, Süleyman; Yesevi Okur, Fatih

Earthquakes have underlined the need for health monitoring and safety assessment of engineering structures in general and especially historical heritage. These structures can be exposed to many different loads such as earthquake and wind that may cause the deterioration and loss of structural integrity. In this study, ambient vibration-based system identification of Zaǧanos Bastion is carried out for health assessment using linear and nonlinear analyses. 3D finite element analyses of the bastion are performed using relievo drawings and analytical dynamic characteristics are obtained. Ambient vibration tests are conducted on the bastion and experimental dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios are determined. Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition Method in the frequency domain and Stochastic Subspace Identification Method in the time domain are used to extract the experimental dynamic characteristics. Maximum differences are minimized using some uncertain parameters to obtain the updated finite element model. Linear and nonlinear time history analyses are carried out using 1999 Kocaeli earthquake ground motion record to display the maximum displacements, stresses and local damage regions with detail. This study suggests that minor damage at the connection points and exterior surface will sustain under destructive earthquakes.

An integrated intuitionistic fuzzy set and mathematical programming approach for an occupational health and safety policy

Efe, Burak; Kurt, Mustafa; Efe, Ömer Faruk

This paper aims to establish an occupational health and safety policy for three firms. This paper provides to overcome the drawbacks of traditional FMEA (failure mode and effects analysis) by using an integrated intuitionistic fuzzy multi-criteria decision making method and a linear programming. Priority value of criteria has been defined by utilizing intuitionistic fuzzy analytic hierarchy process method and the highest risky failure mode among failure modes has been found by utilizing intuitionistic fuzzy VIKOR (VIsekriterijumska optimizacija i KOm-promisno Resenje). The application of risk evaluation is conducted to show the effectiveness of the proposed method in three firms. The reliability of the risk ranking is verified by helping of a sensitivity analysis and the advantages of the proposed approach are shown by comparing with the other methods. The managers of the firm present some limitations for the occupational health and safety policy so that these constraints are solved by helping of a linear programming. The results show that destroying of the existing steel ropes during production of plaster, risks that caused from work equipment and electric shock during cutting were determined the highest risky failure modes for construction, textile and metal firms, respectively.

Yuksel, Ferhat; Karaman, Safa; Gurbuz, Melek; Hayta, Mehmet; Yalcin, Hasan; Dogan, Mahmut; Kayacier, Ahmed

In this study, utilization of stale bread powder was evaluated to produce low fat snack food formulation and for this purpose, corn chips were manufactured using stale bread at different concentrations. Response surface modeling technique was used to study the simultaneous effects of stale bread level (0–50%), frying time (40–60 s) and frying temperature (170–190 °C) on some physicochemical, textural and sensory properties of corn chips enriched with stale bread powder. Also, optimization of processing variables was performed for desired products. Results indicated that the addition of stale bread into the formulation decreased the oil content of the final product up to addition of 25% stale bread level. The hardness and yellowness of samples decreased with the increasing of stale bread level; while, the dry matter and ash contents as well as firmness value and sensory scores of samples increased with the increasing stale bread level. Generally, corn chips produced with the addition of stale bread were more preferred by the panel compared to control samples.

Prediction of the antimicrobial activity of walnut (Juglans regia L.) kernel aqueous extracts using artificial neural network and multiple linear regression

Kavuncuoglu, Hatice; Kavuncuoglu, Erhan; Karatas, Seyda Merve; Benli, Büsra; Sagdic, Osman; Yalcin, Hasan

The mathematical model was established to determine the diameter of inhibition zone of the walnut extract on the twelve bacterial species. Type of extraction, concentration, and pathogens were taken as input variables. Two models were used with the aim of designing this system. One of them was developed with artificial neural networks (ANN), and the other was formed with multiple linear regression (MLR). Four common training algorithms were used. Levenberg–Marquardt (LM), Bayesian regulation (BR), scaled conjugate gradient (SCG) and resilient back propagation (RP) were investigated, and the algorithms were compared. Root mean squared error and correlation coefficient were evaluated as performance criteria. When these criteria were analyzed, ANN showed high prediction performance, while MLR showed low prediction performance. As a result, it is seen that when the different input values are provided to the system developed with ANN, the most accurate inhibition zone (IZ) estimates were obtained. The results of this study could offer new perspectives, particularly in the field of microbiology, because these could be applied to other type of extraction, concentrations, and pathogens, without resorting to experiments.

Students understanding of mathematics using from prototypical examples: Analyze in linear algebra

    Aydin, Sinan; Akkan, Yaşar

Mathematical objects are ʼnatural objects’ for the practical mind. Definitions and theories can only describe them, not create or construct them. A mathematical term is interpreted through its denotation as representing a collection of particular objects for the theoretical mind. So, theoretical and practical modes of thinking differ in the manner in which they constitute the meanings of words. Thinking in terms of prototypical examples, rather than definitions, became an obstacle to our students’ understanding the notion of linear transformation. In the course, linear transformations were defined as transformations of vector spaces which conserve linear combinations. The obstacle was revealed in the students’ attempts ‘linear extension problem’: given a transformation of a basis, to construct a linear transformation with those values on the basis. In the experimental course, the problem was not formulated in such general terms. It was restricted to two dimensions, and the students were not asked to ‘linearly extend a transformation from a basis to the whole plane’ but to assume the existence of such an extension and find some missing information about it. In this study we are discussing students understanding of mathematical concepts by means of linear transformation in linear algebra.

Uçar, Meltem; Değer, Orhan; Gerigelmez, Asuman Yiğit; Cengiz, Sevil; Barlak, Yaşam; Ovalı, Ercüment

Purpose: To investigate the apoptosis-inducing capacity of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) extracts of bee pollen and propolis in HL-60 Myeloid Cancer Cell Lines. Methods: DMSO extracts of pollen and propolis were incubated separately with HL-60 cells, and caspase-3 activity evaluated. In order to determine the cell cycle characteristics of HL-60 cells with and without extracts of pollen and propolis, the cells were analysed using flow cytometry. Results: The DMSO extract of propolis (0.5 mg/mL) increased apoptosis from undetectable levels to 60.1%, while maintaining cell viability. The DMSO extract of pollen (2 mg/ml) increased apoptosis from undetectable levels to 52.2% while decreasing cell viability by 62%. Caspase-3 activity in HL-60 cells incubated with DMSO extracts of pollen and propolis were 3.6-to 12-fold higher than in controls. Conclusion: Turkish pollen and propolis individually increase apoptosis and the activity of caspase-3 in HL-60 cells. This finding indicates that bee products may have beneficial effects in the treatment of cancer.

Country of origin image and consumer knowledge effects on product evaluation and purchase intention

    Izmir, Onur

Introduction Consumers daily face lots of purchase decisions when they are buying products and services (Bas et al., 2016). They rely on some certain elements of the products to make the right decision about which product to buy. Some rely on extrinsic cues such as brand, country of origin (COO), store name, and price, while others take into account intrinsic cues of the intended product such as taste, smell, design, and durability (Wall et al., 1991; Chao, 1998). Consumers are inclined to make inferences regarding a given product depending on the information and experience level that they have with it (Johansson et al., 1985; Han, 1989, 1990). There is a well-known positive relationship between price and the quality (Zeithaml, 1988). COO information also provides consumers with some insight about the quality of the product (Li and Wyer, 1994) as such consumers attribute some certain features to certain countries (Ahmed and d’Astous, 1993; Verlegh and Steenkamp, 1999). Consumers develop stereotypes concerning “made in” labels of the products (Han, 1990; Ahmed et al., 2004). For instance, Germany is famous for its high-quality and high-durability automobiles; Japan is a well-known country in terms of its high-technology products especially in electronics; Italy and France are good at design and fashion and so on. There is also a negative association between some countries and consumer’s perception. For example, Chinese products are perceived negatively in terms of quality (Verlegh and Steenkamp, 1999; Kinra, 2006; Kerboucheet al., 2012). As a consequence,….

Landslide susceptibility mapping for a landslide-prone area (Findikli, NE of Turkey) by likelihood-frequency ratio and weighted linear combination models

Akgun, Aykut; Dag, Serhat; Bulut, Fikri

Landslides are very common natural problems in the Black Sea Region of Turkey due to the steep topography, improper use of land cover and adverse climatic conditions for landslides. In the western part of region, many studies have been carried out especially in the last decade for landslide susceptibility mapping using different evaluation methods such as deterministic approach, landslide distribution, qualitative, statistical and distribution-free analyses. The purpose of this study is to produce landslide susceptibility maps of a landslide-prone area (Findikli district, Rize) located at the eastern part of the Black Sea Region of Turkey by likelihood frequency ratio (LRM) model and weighted linear combination (WLC) model and to compare the results obtained. For this purpose, landslide inventory map of the area were prepared for the years of 1983 and 1995 by detailed field surveys and aerial-photography studies. Slope angle, slope aspect, lithology, distance from drainage lines, distance from roads and the land-cover of the study area are considered as the landslide-conditioning parameters. The differences between the susceptibility maps derived by the LRM and the WLC models are relatively minor when broad-based classifications are taken into account. However, the WLC map showed more details but the other map produced by LRM model produced weak results. The reason for this result is considered to be the fact that the majority of pixels in the LRM map have high values than the WLC-derived susceptibility map. In order to validate the two susceptibility maps, both of them were compared with the landslide inventory map. Although the landslides do not exist in the very high susceptibility class of the both maps, 79% of the landslides fall into the high and very high susceptibility zones of the WLC map while this is 49% for the LRM map. This shows that the WLC model exhibited higher performance than the LRM model.

Assessment of effect of material properties on seismic response of a cantilever wall

    Cakir, Tufan

Cantilever retaining wall movements generally depend on the intensity and duration of ground motion, the response of the soil underlying the wall, the response of the backfill, the structural rigidity, and soil-structure interaction (SSI). This paper investigates the effect of material properties on seismic response of backfill-cantilever retaining wall-soil/foundation interaction system considering SSI. The material properties varied include the modulus of elasticity, Poisson’s ratio, and mass density of the wall material. A series of nonlinear time history analyses with variation of material properties of the cantilever retaining wall are carried out by using the suggested finite element model (FEM). The backfill and foundation soil are modelled as an elastoplastic medium obeying the Drucker-Prager yield criterion, and the backfill-wall interface behavior is taken into consideration by using interface elements between the wall and soil to allow for de-bonding. The viscous boundary model is used in three dimensions to consider radiational effect of the seismic waves through the soil medium. In the seismic analyses, North-South component of the ground motion recorded during August 17, 1999 Kocaeli Earthquake in Yarimca station is used. Dynamic equations of motions are solved by using Newmark’s direct step-by-step integration method. The response quantities incorporate the lateral displacements of the wall relative to the moving base and the stresses in the wall in all directions. The results show that while the modulus of elasticity has a considerable effect on seismic behavior of cantilever retaining wall, the Poisson’s ratio and mass density of the wall material have negligible effects on seismic response.

Choosing safe and suitable bicycle routes to integrate cycling and public transport systems

    Saplıoğlu, M.; Aydın, M.M.

Bicycle utilization has become an important transportation mode in various cities during the past decade. It has brought a rapid growth as an important transport mode in many countries by providing several benefits for traffic, health and cost. However, the growing in bicycle utilization demand causes many problems such as safety, effectiveness etc. For this reason, other effective parameters on urban transport should be considered when planning new safe bicycle paths in the spatial platform. In this study, it was aimed to examine all these negative and positive effective parameters on safety and choice while integrating cycling with a public transport (bus link) system. To determine effective parameters on route choice, a Questionnaire Survey (QS) was carried out on 460 participants who are cycling for a long time in Isparta City/Turkey. It was obtained from the QS that Accident Prone Areas (APA) are the most important factor on cycling and public transport integration. The other parameters are determined as Bus Lane (BL), Road Side Car Park (RSCP), Bicycle Parks (BP), Road Grade (RG), Signalization (S), Traffic Capacity (TC), Connected Bike Lane (CBL) and Separated Bike Lane (SBL) according to their importance. In order to determine safer and serviceable bicycle routes selection problem, accident-prone locations (using Accident Reports and Geographic Information Systems-GIS), bus lines and survey data has been used in GIS. Also, a multi-criteria decision making approach Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method is implemented to analyze survey data and decide effective parameters on safer and serviceable bicycle routes. It was found that safer and serviceable bicycle routes can be determined by the utilization of QS, GIS and AHP methods with together. Also, it was concluded that Accident Prone Areas, Bus Lanes and Road Side Car Parks are the most important factors while integrating cycling with a public transport system.

An assessment on the recent seismicity in the north anatolian fault zone, Turkey

    Özturk, S.; Sari, M.

A statistical assessment of recent seismicity in the North Anatolian Fault Zone, Turkey, is made by using seismotectonic b-value and precursory seismic quiescence Z-value. The catalogue including 28,420 earthquakes between 1970 and 2016 is used. Using the Reasenberg declustering process and the earthquakes with MD≥2.7, 51.4% of the events are removed and so, 13,815 events are used for a quantitative evaluation of seismic quiescence in the NAFZ in the beginning of 2016. Completeness magnitude is estimated as 2.7. Resulting values show that significant anomalies are observed in both band Z-values in some parts of the NAFZ. The larger b-values are calculated in Silivri, Black Sea, Izmit and Düzce whereas the smaller b-values are estimated in the western, the eastern and the middle parts of the NAFZ, covering Gulf of Saros, Gelibolu (Çanakkale), Ismetpasa segment, Bingöl, Erzincan, Amasya and Çankiri. Several quiescence regions in and around Tekirdag, Gulf of Saros, Istanbul, Marmara and Black Sea, Izmit, Düzce fault, Mudurnu, Çankiri, Amasya are observed. Consequently, the same regions including Gulf of Saros, Çankiri and Amasya where the smallest b-values and the largest Z-values are obtained may give important evidences to reveal the future earthquake potential in the North Anatolian Fault Zone.

The effectiveness of the monetary transmission mechanism channel in Turkey

Okur, Fatih; Akkuş, Ömer; Durmaz, Atakan

This study investigates on which channels the monetary transmission mechanism works effectively. In this context, quarterly data for the period 2005-2017 is used for Turkey and the variables used to determine the efficiency of the monetary transmission mechanism are analyzed by the VAR method. The obtained results indicate that the loans and reserves have a more effective role on the inflation as a channel of the monetary transmission mechanism. According to the long run results, while the exchange rate and reserves channel have a negative effect on the real GDP, it is revealed that loans have a positive effect on the real GDP in the long run stabilization.

Quality properties of wheat breads incorporated with dried sourdoughs produced with different fermentation and drying methods

    Hendek Ertop, M.; Ilter, S.M.; YilMaz, F.; BaltaCi, C.; Gündogdu, A.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the dried sourdoughs produced with two different fermentation methods [Spontaneous fermentation(SPF) and starter of lactic acid bacteria-added fermentation(STF)], and three different drying methods (Drying in oven;DO, Freeze drier;DFD, and Spray drier;DSD) on various quality properties of the wheat bread. The bread samples prepared by addition of the dried sourdoughs at the rates of 3 %, 6 % and 12 %, and control bread prepared without sourdough were compared in terms of bioactivity, shelf life, physicochemical and sensory properties. The addition of the dried sourdough affected the specifc volume, pH and acidity of the bread samples signifcantly (p < 0.05), and a slow down moisture loss occurred during shelf life. The a*value of crust, antioxidant activity, and sensory properties were improved compared to the control bread. The use of dried sourdough at the rate of 12 % gave the most effective results. When the fermentation and drying methods were evaluated together, the combinations of SPF/DO, SPF/DFD and STE/DSD gave the best results.

Anticholinergic and antidiabetic effects of isoeugenol from clove (Eugenia caryophylata) oil

    Topal, Fevzi

Isoeugenol (2-methoxy-4-(prop-1-en-1-yl)phenol), a component of from clove (Eugenia caryophylata) oil, is a starting material for both the biotechnological and synthetic production of vanillin and vanillic acid. In this article, the isoeugenol showed excellent inhibitory effects against some metabolic enzymes such as acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzymes, α-glycosidase, and α-amylase. Isoeugenol has the IC50 values of 411.5 for α-amylase, 19.25 nM for α-glycosidase and 77.00 nM for AChE. Ki values of isoeugenol were found as 21 ± 9 nM and 16 ± 3 nM against α-glycosidase and AChE, respectively. On the other hand, tacrine as standard AChE inhibitor exhibited IC50 value of 20.38 nM. α-Glycosidase inhibitors, commonly referred to as starch blockers, are anti-diabetic drugs that help reduce edible blood glucose levels. AChE inhibitors are used for the treatment of some neurologic degenerational diseases, which involve Alzheimer’s disease. Also, there is a growing interest and the need to search for newer effective and safe AChE, α-amylase, and α-glycosidase inhibitors for the treatment of some metabolic disorder.

Search for excited muons at the future SpPC-based muon-proton colliders

    Caliskan, A.

We have investigated the production potential of the spin-1/2 excited muons, predicted by preonic models, at the four SPPC (Super Proton-Proton Collider)-based muon-proton colliders in different center-of-mass energies. For the signal process µp → µ*X → µγX, the production cross section and the decay width values of the excited muons have been calculated. The pseudorapidity and transverse momentum distributions of muons and photons in the final state have been obtained in order to choose the kinematical cuts best suited for enhancing the statistical signal of the excited muon signature. By applying these cuts, we report the discovery, observation and exclusion mass limits of the excited muons for two compositeness scale values, which are an energy level at which new interactions are expected to occur. It is shown that the discovery limits on the excited muons in the case the compositeness scale equals 100 TeV are 2.7, 3.9, 3.1 and 6.7 TeV for center-of-mass energies of 10.3, 14.2, 14.6 and 20.2 TeV, respectively.
