Uzun, Sevda; Ediz, Çiçek; Torun, Serap; Erdaş, Mehmed Burak

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the suicide attempts histories and affecting psychosocial challenges in individuals with substance use disorders (SUD). Methods: This study was conducted between August and October 2023 using an inductive qualitative design. Purposive sampling method was used to reach the sample group. The study included individuals with substance use disorders who had attempted suicide at least once. They were being treated at an Alcohol and Substance Addiction Treatment Center in the eastern region of Türkiye. Interviews continued until data saturation was achieved with 13 participants. All interviews were audio recorded and then transcribed. The research adhered to the COREQ checklist. Results: Three main themes (etiological factors in SUD, challenges in coping with SUD and suicide) and ten sub-themes (family-based factors, environmental factors, traumatic experiences, personal factors, psychological, physical, and social factors, the causes and methods of substance use, and emotions) emerged in the analysis of the data. Conclusion: Given the connection between substance use and suicide, it is crucial to recognize and comprehend the increased risk of suicide among individuals with SUD and identify potential comorbid disorders and accompanying mental health issues. Psychiatric and mental health nurses can use effective psychosocial interventions to impart knowledge related to SUD management, organize grouptherapy (i.e., peer support), perform to ensure continuity of treatment and improve individuals' self-management skills.

    Ediz, Çiçek; Uzun, Sevda

Objective: To evaluate the perspective of nurses in Turkey towards the global climate crisis and its impact on mental health using a qualitative approach. Materials and Method: This study was conducted from August to September 2023 with 35 nurses living in seven regions of Turkey using an inductive qualitative approach. The researchers employed the snowball sampling method to select participants. Interviews with the participants were conducted until data saturation was reached. Thematic analysis was used to emerge themes. Results: The findings revealed five main themes (perception of the global climate crisis, effects of the global climate crisis, effects of the global climate crisis on mental health, reflections of the global climate crisis on nursing and nurses' views on prevention and intervention studies for the global climate crisis). Also, the findings revealed 12 sub-themes (physical outcomes, mental outcomes, direct and indirect impacts, psychosocial effects and personal, national and international-based reflections). Conclusion: Our study indicates that nurses exhibit genuine concern for the global climate crisis and experience psychological effects related to this pressing environmental issue. Nurses are keenly aware of their responsibility to safeguard the planet and demonstrate a strong sense of concern for the state of the world. Impact: It is evident that nurses, being prominent advocates for sustainability, are cognizant of their responsibility to protect the planet and demonstrate genuine apprehension for the state of the world. Implications: Nurses play a crucial role, as they make up 60% of the global healthcare workforce and are often the frontline healthcare professionals during natural disasters. It is vital to elucidate and clarify the terminology concerning the relationship between the climate crisis and the mental health of nurses, to determine the scope of this relationship and to make recommendations for future research areas. Patient or Public Contribution: No patient or Public Contribution.

Nothing is more important than my partner's health: Turkish men's perspectives on partner's appearance after mastectomy and alopecia

Gürsoy, Ayla; Koçan, Sema; Aktuğ, Cemile

Purposes The aim of this study was to acquire a deeper understanding of male experiences on the emotional and social impact of their partners’ mastectomy and chemotherapy-induced alopecia. Methods A purposive sample of 16 males whose partners had undergone mastectomy and alopecia due to chemotherapy was chosen. The data were collected through a semi-structured interview method. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of tape-recorded interviews was employed. Results Two main themes emerged from the data: facing the changes and my wife and I at present. Male partners were affected differently by the change in the physical appearance of their female partners. Our study participants said it was a difficult experience to see their partners for the first time after the surgery, but they emphasized that it was more important that their partners were healthy than the fact that they did not have a breast and hair. They also said they did not know how to behave towards their partners after surgery and/or chemotherapy. Nevertheless, they felt that the disease process of their partners had strengthened their bond and had not negatively influenced their relationship with others. Conclusions The changes in the partners’ physical appearance after mastectomy and chemotherapy affected males differently in psychological, emotional and social terms. Since nurses working in this field are in contact with patients during all phases of treatment and care, it would be positive and beneficial to plan nursing interventions that give emotional support for male partners of patients with breast cancer.
