Karl Malan

Gurcan, Fatih; Cam, Handan; Ahmed, Sana
The term “Industry 4.0” signifies a pivotal stage in industrial development, representing the current wave of transformation characterized by the integration of digital technologies into manufacturing and business processes. This concept spans multiple disciplines, including industrial engineering, data science, marketing, and strategic management. While a considerable volume of research has been conducted under the umbrella of Industry 4.0, there remains a lack of a comprehensive synthesis that captures the full scope and evolution of the field. The objective of this study is to systematically analyze, classify, and evaluate published research related to Industry 4.0, while identifying key gaps and forecasting potential future research directions. To accomplish this, a total of 10,696 journal articles indexed in the SCOPUS database from 2013 to 2023 were analyzed. The Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) algorithm—a widely used probabilistic topic modeling technique in text mining—was applied to uncover latent themes within the literature. The analysis revealed 41 major topics, which were subsequently organized into five overarching categories: Sustainability, Manufacturing, Technology, Process, and Management. Findings indicate a notable shift in research emphasis over the past decade—from predominantly technical and engineering-focused issues toward broader concerns involving process optimization and organizational management. This transition highlights the growing importance of interdisciplinary approaches in addressing the complex challenges posed by Industry 4.0. Ultimately, this study not only maps the intellectual structure of existing research but also serves as a valuable resource for scholars, helping to navigate emerging trends and target underexplored areas in future investigations. This comprehensive thematic overview supports academics in pinpointing neglected subject areas, aligning future investigations with emerging priorities, and refining the strategic focus of Industry 4.0 research agendas.

Ilhan-Nas, Tulay; Saglam, Aysegul; Okan, Tarhan; Peker, Iskender
Industry 4.0, whose effects have been more and more noticeable in recent years, and the digital change it brings call for a new educational model that aligns university instructional processes and curricula with the demands of business. This approach, known as University 4.0, intends to promote more technology-based applications, the power of innovation, the training of skilled specialists to satisfy industrial needs, and the development of competences that can achieve multidisciplinary projects. It is of utmost importance to adapt late-industrializing nations’ educational systems, such as Turkey’s, to this change process. The aim of this research, which takes the Turkish context as a reference, is to reveal how the curricula and educational processes of business schools should be shaped with a perspective that takes into account the human resources requirements of industry 4.0. A decision-making technique that integrates QFD, Delphi, and DEMATEL methods was employed in the study. The results clearly show that the most important expectation for social stakeholders is to provide university-industry cooperation. However, some of the most pressing problems include applied learning through collaborative educational experiences, teamwork skills, changing roles and competencies of academics. The findings point out that the educational activities of business schools must be linked with industry expectations through technology-based training activities and teamwork.

Şimşek Demirbağ, Kübra; Yıldırım, Nihan
Purpose: Industry 4.0 (I40) is an open window of opportunity for Turkey, a developed country, to eliminate technological dependence and produce with maximum productivity. However, I40, which corresponds to the fourth wave of industrial revolutions, brings both opportunities and challenges. In this context, this study aims to reveal the foresight of managers in the Turkish white goods industry (TWGI) regarding the advantages and challenges of I40 and compare them with the literature. Design/methodology/approach: The Delphi method was used for the study. Data were collected from managers of companies that are members of the White Goods Suppliers Association (BEYSAD). Seventy managers from 55 companies participated in the first round, and 19 managers participated in the second round of Delphi. Findings: The results show that the most frequently cited advantages are productivity/resource efficiency, data and information-enabled effectiveness/productivity, quality 4.0 and competitiveness/strategy. The most frequently mentioned challenges are financial resources/investment, employee qualification/training, technical/processual challenges and organizational transformation/leadership. Research limitations/implications: The sample was limited to the managers of the TWGI. Practical implications: Players in similar ecosystems and policymakers should consider the advantages and respond to potential challenges when creating roadmaps, taking the necessary steps and positioning themselves in the marketplace. In particular, the TWGI – Turkey’s showcase in international markets – should consider the undeniable benefits of the I40 transition to increase innovation. Originality/value: The findings for the first time highlight the advantages and challenges of I40 in an industry in Turkey, and they will benefit the TWGI, which is among the leaders in Turkey in terms of digital maturity and innovation in its journey to I40.

Technological developments have left indelible impacts on the economy all along the line. Every novel invention realized changes production processes rapidly, which concomitantly transforms social life. One of the most apparent examples of this is the First Industrial Revolution emerged in the 18th Century. Subsequent to this development which was considered as the beginning of production in the factory environment, the second industrial revolution based on automation (First half of 20th Century) and the third Industrial Revolution based on electronics (last quarter of the 20th century) were realized. Finally, the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) process was initiated by Germany in 2011. In line with this process in which cyber-physical systems and robotic technologies are expected to prevail, Super-Smart Society (Society 5.0) model was developed by Japan in 2017. Both Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0 implementations are expected to have a significant impact on economic and social life and to change both labor and Welfare State practices fundamentally. It is also possible that these aforementioned developments may have an impact on social security system of the government. Likewise, the emergence of extensive unemployment condition due to robotic technologies and training for adaptation of available labor force to the new technologies may lead to redesign of the social security system. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the possible impacts of the Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0 processes on social security expenditures. The basic result obtained from the study; unemployment increase and training activities for the labor-force increases social security expenditures, but however digitalization process in Welfare State implementations may be expected to decrease social security expenditures in the long-run depending on efficiency and effectiveness increases in the government.
