Hydrodynamic performance evaluation of screening on the physical unit operations in wastewater treatment based on experimentally validated CFD computations

    Şahin, Nagehan; Şibil, Rahim

This paper introduces an evaluation of the hydrodynamic performance of the flow in the screens used on the physical unit operations in a selected full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. The numerical study was carried out with the ANSYS Fluent, CFD software by using the three-dimensional (3 D), steady, incompressible flow based on the Reynolds-Average Navier-Stokes equations with three different turbulence modeling. The hydrodynamic behavior of the screening facility, combined with head pond-upstream channel-bar screens was evaluated under different conditions of the mass flow rate and velocity fields. Also, the numerical study was validated against the experimental study, which implemented in-situ measurements by Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV), and consistent results were obtained between the numerical and experimental study. Interestingly, while the Realizable (real) k-ε turbulence model with the relative error of 9.31% gave the best predicting results in the head pond, the renormalization group (RNG) k-ɛ turbulence model with the relative error of 9.05% gave the best predicting results in the upstream channel and through bar screens. As a result of the experimental measurements and CFD analyses carried out in the full-scale WWTP, the function of the screening facility was found to be incomplete. Moreover, a hydraulically improved new geometry was presented to operate the existing WWTP efficiently.

Clinical Preferences of Turkish Urologists in Screening and Diagnosis of Prostate Cancer and Adherence to European Association of Urology Guidelines

Yildiz, Huseyin Alperen; Demirkiran, Engin Denizhan; Madendere, Serdar; Deger, Muslim Dogan

Objective: To compare the clinical preferences of urologists in prostate cancer screening and diagnosis with current guideline recommendations.Materials and Methods: The study is based on an online survey that consists of 21 single response or multiple response questions. By e-mail, 2,305 certified urologists in active practice as well as urology residents in their last year of training were invited to participate in the study. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze practice patterns and demographics. The respondents were divided into groups based on their experience in urology, hospital type and academic title. Results: Our results show that preferences of the majority of urologists conflicts with recommendations of European Association of Urology Prostate Cancer Guidelines regarding prostate biopsy method, management of a patient with high prostate-specific antigen value, use of additional test and performance scoring systems, role of multiparametric prostate magnetic resonance imaging. Conclusion: Urologists act in the direction of their habits or clinical experience rather than current guidelines regardless of their experience. Both clinicians and professional organizations should work on what can be done about the reflection of rapidly changing scientific knowledge on the field and the improvement of the health service provided.

Coronavirus disease 2019 infection and nursing in patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment

    Demirag, Hatice; Hintistan, Sevilay

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. Patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis treatment are at a high risk of serious complications if infections occur because of suppressed immune system, cardiovascular disease, and important comorbidities, such as diabetes mellitus. To control and prevent the spread of the outbreak to patients and other healthcare professionals, it is necessary to be informed about COVID-19, to diagnose cases early, and to be treated. The purpose of this review is to discuss the communication, transport, predialysis screening and triage, and COVID-19 nursing management in patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment.

SCREENING FOR ABDOMINAL AORTIC ANEURYSM IN GERIATRIC POPULATION

Karakus, Ali; Tasin, Veyis; Kartal, Ismail; Kuvandik, Guven

Aim: An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is uncommon in people. Male gender and smoking are the most important risk factors. AAA is a condition that may be fatal when diagnosis is delayed This study aimed to emphasize the necessity for screening due to four fatal cases with abdominal aortic aneurysm in a genatric population. Material and Method The study included 320 patients from a nursing home and an emergency department The diameters of abdominal aortas were measured and assessed far risk factors. Results: Of the patients, 232 (72.5% were male and the mean age was 75.65 +/- 7.76 (range: 62-95 years). Hypertension was the most frequent risk factor determined. Mean aortic diameter was found as 18.87 +/- 2.74 mm (range 15-26 mm) No significant associations were detected among risk factors, age groups, and aortic diameter Four cases with abdominal aortic aneurysm died. Discussion AM is the most frequently seen aneurysm among true aneurysms. Major risk factors for AAA include male gender. smoking history. and age >65 years. In advanced ages, particularly in men, screening for AAA reduced deaths caused by rupture. The patients should be assessed for surgical intervention by Taking risk factors into consideration. Large-scale screening studies can reduce risk for mortality.
