- MakaleAçık Erişim2020AN EXTENDED ANALYSIS OF THE MODELS TO ESTIMATE PHOTOVOLTAIC MODULE TEMPERATURE
Ozden, Talat; Tolgay, Doga; Yakut, M. Samet; Akinoglu, Bulent G.
To estimate the performance of the photovoltaic power systems is the key issue in their techno-economic feasibility analysis. Performances, on the other hand, strongly depends on the module temperatures of the photovoltaic systems. In this study, we evaluated the performance of ten different module temperature estimation models using the measured outdoor data of five different modules. The modules are installed at the rooftop of a building located at Central Anatolia where the climate is cold and semi-arid. The results showed that the models having smaller number of parameters perform better than the others. We concluded that such analysis should be carried out at different ambient conditions so that the best performing models for the site can be obtained. Another outcome of the study is that the seasonal evaluation of the performance of the models should be carried out.

Basoglu, Mustafa Engin
Photovoltaic (PV) modules have a small power conversion efficiency since material technologies used in commercial PV modules is weak and not well developed. In order to provide the maximum available efficiency in a PV module, a power processing unit (PPU) is connected between PV module and load to extract more power from PV modules In other words, DC-DC converters are used for impedance matching between PV module and load in any kind of loading and environmental conditions. Several maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms have been proposed in the literature. But there are still shortcomings to be improved such as reducing the steady state ripples in power, dynamic response time under changing conditions. In this paper, design steps of the boost converter for an MPPT application have been presented and some experiments have been performed. Consequently, a low cost and fast boost converter based MPPT is implemented.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2019Scopus SJRQ2A fast GMPPT algorithm based on PV characteristic for partial shading conditions
Başoğlu, Mustafa Engin
Photovoltaic (PV) modules experience some partial shading conditions (PSC) due to some various factors. In that kind of a condition, a few maximum power points (MPPs) possibly appear on the power-voltage (P-V) curve, which increases the tracking difficulties. It is known that maximum power point tracking (MPPT) may not be realized by hill climbing (HC) based conventional MPPT algorithms under PSCs. In this context, this paper presents a novel micro converter based algorithm that was developed by using P-V characteristics of PV modules. Unlike voltage or duty ratio scanning techniques, this paper introduces a new deciding method to determine the correct global MPP (GMPP) region. For this, the proposed method uses some duty ratios that were calculated corresponding to each MPP region. Thus, the initialization of duty ratio is done properly, which results in high tracking speed and accurate tracking of the GMPP. The other advantages of the proposed algorithm are structural simplicity, less computational burden, and ease of implementation with a basic microcontroller. The simulation results show that this algorithm has fast tracking capability and it manages to track GMPP for PSCs correctly, since it includes an artificial scanning procedure. Single ended primary inductance converter (SEPIC) is built in order to validate the proposed global maximum power point tracking (GMPPT) algorithm. The performance of the proposed GMPPT technique is verified by experimental studies. The results show that the proposed GMPPT technique is fast by up to five times than an adaptive full scanning strategy and improved IC algorithm. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm can be commercially used in micro converters, since it is compatible with small number of bypass diodes in a module.

Basoglu, Mustafa Engin; Çakir, Bekir
A new hybrid global maximum power point (MPP) tracking (MPPT) method is introduced in this study by using an improved 0.8 VOC model-based algorithm containing a smart power scanning procedure which is based on the sign of a change of photovoltaic (PV) module power. By courtesy of this procedure, the global MPP is determined effectively and within a small scanning time interval. The effectiveness of the proposed global MPPT algorithm has been validated by experimental studies. One of the buck-boost converter types, a single-ended primary inductance converter was implemented in this context. Experimental results show that tracking efficiency in the proposed algorithm is very satisfactory since blind scanning is prevented. Furthermore, it is presented in the experimental results that tracking efficiency is bigger in the proposed shading detection approach by up to 11.29% than the other technique which monitors voltage and current variations. In addition, there are no high software and hardware burdens which make this MPPT algorithm applicable especially in the smart alternating current module, module-integrated converters, PV power optimisers, and module level distributed MPPT applications.

- BildiriAçık Erişim2018Performance and degradation analyses of two different pv modules in central anatolia
Ozden, Talat; Akinoglu, Bulent G.; Kurtz, Sarah
Ankara (latitude: around 40°N) is in Central Anatolia and the climate is dry continental. Due to the rapid transition to renewable energy policies of Turkey it is now a must to complete truthful feasibility analyses for solar power systems countrywide. Long term performance and degradation analyses have been carried out by the authors for three different arrays and many research results appearing in the literature are summarized. Present research analyzes the outdoor testing results of two PV modules monthly data. One of the modules has multi crystalline silicon (Poly-Si) cells and the other is thin film silicon (amorphous Si / microcrystalline Si tandem structure - a-Si/μc-Si) cells. The results showed that in five years the average yearly efficiency decreases from 14% to 11% for Poly-Si (14.72% is the nameplate Standard Test Condition (STC) efficiency) and from 8% to 6% for thin film modules (9.15% is STC efficiency). Our calculations are based on measured solar global-horizontal irradiance from which we calculated plane-of-array irradiation using an anisotropic sky model. We present the details of these analyses and degradation rates for the two types of modules to be used in long term feasibility analyses.
