- MakaleYalnız künye2014Scopus SJRQ3The effect of Saccharomyces cerevisiae on milk yield, milk compositions and body condition score raised organically in dairy cows
Bayram, Bahri; Aksakal, Vecihi; Karaalp, Musa; Mazlum, Halit
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC) on milk yield, milk compositions and the body condition score raised organically in dairy cattle. For this aim, 120 lactating Holstein Friesian dairy cows were randomly divided into group control (n = 60) and treatment (n = 60) in a private organic dairy farming in the Kelkit District of the Gumushane Province in Turkey. The diet of group treatment each cow was supplementation with 6 g SC per day. The experimental was started after 30 days of calving and lasted 45 days after. The average daily milk yield production (p<0.01) was higher in the SC group (34.6±0.31 vs. 31.8±0.44kg day-1 in the treated and control group, respectively). The effect of SC on some milk compositions as non-fat solids (%), milk fat (%), protein (%) and lactose were statistically non-significant. Body condition score in the treated group (2.74±0.016) was higher than control group (2.58±0.017) (p<0.01). It was concluded that milk yield capacities in organic dairy cattle farming in case that the similar results are confirmed with additional studies can be substantially increased.

- MakaleYalnız künye2012Scopus SJRQ3EFFECT OF THE BODY CONDITION SCORE ON SOME REPRODUCTION AND MILK YIELD TRAITS OF SWEDISH RED AND WHITE COWS
Bayram, B.; Aksakal, V.; Akbulut, O.
This study examined the effect of body condition score (BCS) at calving and during the first month of lactation on some reproduction and milk yield traits of Swedish Red and White (SRW) cows organically raised in Turkey. For this purpose, SRW cows divided two groups, named as thin (BCS <3.00) and moderate (BCS >= 3.00). The actual milk yield (815 kg) and 305 day daily milk yield (736 kg) of cows with low condition score at calving were significantly (P<0.01) higher than those with moderate condition score. The BCS at calving did not have an effect on the lactation length, peak daily milk yield and days to attain peak milk yield. The condition score obtained in the first month of lactation only affected the peak daily milk yield (P<0.05), while its impact on the other characteristics was non-significant. The service period of the cows with low condition score at calving was significantly longer (19.9 day) and their number of services per conception was significantly lower (0.37 units) (P<0.05) than moderate group. The condition loss was calculated as 0.0137 units in the thin group and 0.2290 units in the moderate group and this differences were significant (P<0.01) during the first 30 day period of lactation. The phenotypic correlation between BCS at calving and milk yield traits were negative and significant (P<0.01). According to this relationship, actual milk yield (r=-0.208), 305 day milk yield (r=-0.248) and peak daily milk yield (r=-0.251) decreased significantly (P<0.01) with the increase in the BCS at calving. The service periods of cows with low condition scores at calving were significantly longer (P<0.01).

- MakaleYalnız künye2010Scopus SJRQ4An analysis of the factors affecting birth weight and actual milk yield in swedish red cattle using regression tree analysis
Topal, M.; Aksakal, V.; Bayram, B.; Yaǧanoǧlu, M.
Performance records (birth weight and actual milk yield) on 206 Swedish Red cattle maintained at private organic diary cattle enterprise in Kelkit district of Gümüşhane province, in Turkey, were analyzed through regression tree method to determine the effects of some factors affecting birth weight and actual milk yield. The birth weight of calves averaged as 41.034±4.218 kg. Out of total calves born, twin born calves were 2.9%. Single born calves were heavier (41.185±3.840 kg) than twin born (36.000±10.545 kg). The results revealed that the most significant variable affecting birth weight was birth type, followed by birth season, sex and body condition score (BCS2) of the dam during birth. Lactation period and peak milk yield were important variables affecting the actual milk yield in the dairy herd under investigation.

- MakaleYalnız künye2010Scopus SJRQ3Non-genetic factors affecting milk and reproductive traits of Swedish Red and White cattle raised organically in Turkey
Aksakal, Vecihi; Yanar, Mete; Bayram, Bahri
The data on breeding and performance records of Swedish Red and White (SRW) cows kept in a private organic dairy farm in Kelkit, Turkey, during the period from 2006 through 2009 were used to study the effect of some non-genetic factors such as calving year, calving season, parity, age of dam and sex of calf on the various milk and reproductive traits. The actual lactation milk yield, daily milk yield, peak daily milk, days to attain milk yield and lactation length averaged as 5887.2±94.9 kg, 19.9±0.3 kg, 31.5±0.3 kg, 79.4±2.7 days and 302.5±3.2 days, respectively. The actual lactation milk yield, days to attain peak milk yield and lactation length were significantly affected by calving year and calving season. The effect of the parity on the daily milk yield, peak daily milk yield and days to attain peak milk yield were significant (P<0.01). The least squares means for calving interval and gestation length were 380.2±4.3 days and 275.4±0.6 days, respectively. Age of dam and calving season significantly (P<0.01) affected the days open. Mean age at first calving of SRW cows raised organically was 26.4±0.2 months and was significantly affected by the calving years. Significant (P<0.01) and positive phenotypic correlations of the actual lactation milk yield with daily milk yield (r = 0.71), peak milk yield (r = 0.53), lactation length (r = 0.53), days open (r = 0.43), calving interval (r = 0.36) and days attain to peak milk yield (r = 0.14) (P<0.05) were determined. In conclusion, the significant effects of environmental variables must be taken into consideration when developing and comparing models to be used in adjusting data to provide the best estimates of genetic values and parameters in evaluation of SRW cattle reared organically in Turkey.

- MakaleYalnız künye2009Scopus SJRQ3The effect of average daily gain and age at first calving on reproductive and milk production traits of brown swiss and holstein friesian cattle
Bayram, B.; Yanar, M.; Akbulut, O.
The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of average daily gain and age at first calving on the reproductive and milk production traits of Brown Swiss (BS) a.d Holstein Friesian (HF) cattle. For this purpose, daily gains and ages at first calving were divided into two groups which were below the average called as the "slow" or "early" groups and above the average named as "moderate" or "late" groups respectively. BS heifers in the moderate group reached the first insemination age and first calving age 103.7 and 101.7 days earlier (P>0.01) than these in the slow group respectively. The corresponding values for HF heifers were 37.8 and 29.5 days respectively and were not significant. While the average daily gain had negative effects on reproduction traits following the first calving, the daily gain of BS had no effect on the milk production traits in all parities. HF heifers in the moderate group had higher (P>0.05) actual (585 kg) and 305 days milk yield (324 kg) in the second parity. Early calving in both breeds resulted in a significant (P>0.05) reduction in the actual and 305-days milk yield in the first parity. Early calving caused a significant decrease (P>0.05) in the actual milk yield, 305-days milk yield, actual milk fat and 305-days milk fat yield of BS cows in the first parity. Either early or late calving in BS didn't affect on milk traits in second and third parities. The early calving in HF lowered significantly (P>0.05) the actual and 305-days milk yield in first lactation. However, late calving in HF resulted in lower actual milk yield, 305-days milk yield, actual milk fat yield and 305-days milk fat yield in third parity.

- MakaleYalnız künye2008Reproductive and milk production traits of Holstein Friesian cows in pre-organic and organic dairy husbandry in Turkey
Bayram, Bahri; Yanar, Mete; Akbulut, Ömer
The study was aimed to describe changes caused by conversion to organic dairy farming in Turkey, focusing on reproductive and milk production traits. The data used in this research were obtained from reproductive and milk records of Holstein Friesian cows reared in a private organic dairy farm. The results revealed that cows under organic management had shorter days open and calving interval values compared with cows reared under pre-organic system. Actual and 305 days milk yields of cattle in organic system were greater than these of cows in pre-organic system. Lactation duration was also significantly influenced by farming system and calving season, but days dry was not affected by none the non-genetic factors.
