Ozyurt, E.
The present study examined the axial resistance of welded elliptical hollow section (EHS) K-joints made of high-strength steel (HSS). The axial resistance of EHS K-joints was affected by a range of factors, including the geometrical parameters, orientations, chord pre-stress levels, and the mechanical properties of the high-strength steel grades. This research aimed to investigate the performance of welded EHS K-joints made of HSS under axial loading conditions with or without chord pre-stresses. Finite element analysis was employed for numerical simulations to analyze the nonlinear behaviour of EHS K-joints with HSS. It was observed from the numerical results that the orientation types significantly affected normalised resistance ratios. In contrast, β, γ, θ, and chord pre-stress levels had minimal impact, as comparisons were based on normalised resistance ratios. However, non-dimensional geometric parameters and chord pre-stress levels notably influenced the axial joint resistance of the HSS K-joints. As for predicting the axial resistances of EHS K-joints with HSS, the numerical results indicated that the existing reduction factor might be unsafe for the equivalent RHS method to be applied in the current design guides. Therefore, a new reduction factor was proposed for EHS K-joints with HSS that yield unsafe results.

Transverse contraction joints are by far the most common type of joint in jointed plain concrete pavements. Early loading of contraction joints can create a weakened vertical plane and later grow as a full-depth crack. In this study, load transfer efficiency (LTE) of steel mesh reinforced transverse contraction joints were studied at accelerated pavement tests (APT). 3D finite element (FE) model of jointed plain concrete pavement (JPCP) was developed to study deflections and crack propagation in just under the joint of the concrete pavement. The APT tests were focused on the LTE values before and after the crack initiation under the contraction joint region. Experiments were performed on three slabs in which two of these slabs were prepared without reinforcement and one of them was reinforced with steel mesh. Data generated by APT was used for verification of crack propagation modeling in the finite element analysis. Steel mesh reinforced slab gave the lowest vertical deflections (51μm) and highest LTE (91.56%). The LTE value in the reinforced slab after 25,000 passes was 13.63% higher than the average of unreinforced slabs. The findings suggest that the load transfer efficiency was found to be a complex parameter and should be interpreted together with average displacement values when contraction joints are evaluated at early traffic loadings.

İncele - MakaleYalnız künye2018EFFECTS OF STRAND CONFIGURATION ON PRE-TENSIONED I-GIRDERS
Atmaca, Barbaros; Ates, Sevket; Günaydin, Murat; Altunisik, Ahmet Can
The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of strand configuration on the behavior of precast, pre-tensioned concrete I-girders by considering design load components for highway bridges as dead loads and equivalent lane loads. Under these loads, bridge girder's bottom flange is exposed to tensile stresses. To minimize or eliminate the tensile stresses, compressive stresses are induced in pre-stressed concrete with strands. Determination of strand configuration is important as well as number of strands because it affects stress distribution and displacement of bridge girders. One of the typical precast I-girder with 90 cm height is considered in this study. To determine strand configuration effects, eighteen I-girders with the same cross-section, effective span length and material properties but different strand configuration are selected as an application. Equal prestressing force is applied all strands simultaneously. Three dimensional finite element (FE) models of girder are constituted using ANSYS software. Result of beam theory is used to verify the modeling techniques. At the end of the study, numerically identified stress distribution and displacement for I-girders compared with each other. It is seen that proper strand configuration is effective to reducing stresses and displacements of pre-stressed I-girder.
- BildiriAçık Erişim2015Finite Element Based Investigation of Backfill Effects on Seismic Behavior of a Cantilever Wall

A series of finite element analyses were conducted to investigate the backfill effects on seismic behavior of a cantilever retaining wall incorporating backfill and subsoil interactions. Considering four different backfill soil conditions, the dynamic analyses of backfill-cantilever wall-soil/foundation system were carried out in time domain through ANSYS general purpose finite element computer program. The cohesionless soil was modelled as an elasto-plastic medium with viscous boundary applied on the artificial boundary of soil to simulate the wave energy absorption. Backfill-cantilever wall interface behavior was taken into account by using interface elements between the wall and soil to allow for de-bonding. The magnitudes of lateral displacements and stresses were determined. The obtained results show that the earthquake behavior of cantilever retaining walls can change considerably due to the backfill interaction. Thus, the backfill interaction should be considered in design criteria of cantilever walls. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Cakir, Tufan
The main focus of the current study is to evaluate the dynamic behavior of a cantilever retaining wall considering backfill and soil/foundation interaction effects. For this purpose, a three-dimensional finite element model (FEM) with viscous boundary is developed to investigate the seismic response of the cantilever wall. To demonstrate the validity of the FEM, analytical examinations are carried out by using modal analysis technique. The model verification is accomplished by comparing its predictions to results from analytical method with satisfactory agreement. The method is then employed to further investigate parametrically the effects of not only backfill but also soil/foundation interactions. By means of changing the soil properties, some comparisons are made on lateral displacements and stress responses. It is concluded that the lateral displacements and stresses in the wall are remarkably affected by backfill and subsoil interactions, and the dynamic behavior of the cantilever retaining wall is highly sensitive to mechanical properties of the soil material.

Günaydin, Murat; Adanur, Süleyman; Altunişik, Ahmet Can; Sevim, Bariş; Türker, Emel
In this paper, it is aimed to determine the structural behavior of suspension bridges considering construction stages and different soil conditions. Bosporus Suspension Bridge connecting the Europe and Asia in Istanbul is selected as an example. Finite element model of the bridge is constituted using SAP2000 program considering existing drawings. Geometric nonlinearities are taken into consideration in the analysis using P-Delta large displacement criterion. The time dependent material strength of steel and concrete and geometric variations is included in the analysis. Time dependent material properties are considered as compressive strength, aging, shrinkage and creep for concrete, and relaxation for steel. To emphases the soil condition effect on the structural behavior of suspension bridges, each of hard, medium and soft soils are considered in the analysis. The structural behavior of the bridge at different construction stages and different soil conditions has been examined. Two different finite element analyses with and without construction stages are carried out and results are compared with each other. At the end of the analyses, variation of the displacement and internal forces such as bending moment, axial forces and shear forces for bridge deck and towers are given in detail. Also, displacement and stresses for bridge foundation are given with detail. It can be seen from the analyses that there are some differences between both analyses (with and without construction stages) and the results obtained from the construction stages are bigger. It can be stated that the analysis without construction stages cannot give the reliable solutions. In addition, soil condition have effect on the structural behavior of the bridge. So, it is thought that construction stage analysis using time dependent material properties, geometric nonlinearity and soil conditions effects should be considered in order to obtain more realistic structural behavior of suspension bridges.

Akpinar, Salih; Aydin, Murat Demir; Temiz, Şemsettin; Özel, Adnan
In the present study, it is aimed to compare mechanical behaviors of T-joint types with embedded and non-embedded supports subjected to bending moment. For this purpose, after experimental studies on the two different T-joint types were conducted, stress analyses in the T-joints were performed with a three-dimensional finite element method by considering the geometrical non-linearity and the material non-linearities of the adhesive (DP460) and adherend (AA2024-T3). Finally, stress analyses and experimental results show that the variation of the geometry of the bonding zone, e.g., embedding the supports, would change the stress distributions and strength of the joint. Additionally, it is seen that T-joints with embedded supports carry 30% more load than T-joints with non-embedded supports although their bending stiffnesses decrease.

In this study, it is aim to perform the construction stage analysis of suspension bridges using time dependent material properties. Suspension bridges are widely used as engineering structures to across long spans and give rise to the usage of domains under the bridge. In the finite element analyses of suspension bridges, it is assumed that the structure is built and loaded in a second. However, this type of analysis does not always give the reliable and healthy solutions. Because, construction period of this type of the structures continue along time and loads may be changed during this period. Therefore, construction stages and time dependent material properties should be considered in the analysis to obtain the reliable and healthy results. This paper presents the construction stage analysis of suspension bridges using time dependent material properties. For this purpose, Humber Suspension Bridge built near Kingston upon Hull, England is chosen as an example. Finite element model of the bridge is constituted using SAP2000 program considering project drawings. Altunişik, Ahmet Can; Bayraktar, Alemdar; Sevim, Bariş; Özdemir, Hasan
This paper describes a full scale arch type steel highway bridges, its finite element modelling and Operational Modal Analysis. Eynel Highway Bridge which has arch type structural system with a total length of 336 m and located in the AyvacIk county of Samsun, Turkey is selected as a case study. The bridge connects the villages which are separated with Suat Uǧurlu Dam Lake. The three dimensional finite element model is constructed using project drawings and an analytical modal analysis is then performed to generate natural frequencies and mode shapes in the three-orthogonal directions. The ambient vibration tests on the bridge deck under natural excitation such as traffic, human walking and wind loads are conducted using Operational Modal Analysis. Sensitive seismic accelerometers are used to collect signals obtained from the experimental tests. To obtain experimental dynamic characteristics, two output-only system identification methods are employed namely, Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition method in the frequency domain and Stochastic Subspace Identification method in time domain. The correlation between the finite element model and experimental results is studied. Good agreement is found between dynamic characteristics in the all measurement test setups performed on the bridge deck. It is demonstrated that the ambient vibration measurements using Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition and Stochastic Subspace Identification methods are enough to identify the most significant modes of steel highway bridges. It is seen that there are some differences between analytical and experimental natural frequencies and experimental natural frequencies are generally bigger than the others.
