Convergence and data dependence results of the nonlinear Volterra integral equation by the Picard's three step iteration

    Cona, Lale

Picard's three step iteration algorithm was one of the iteration algorithms that was recently shown to be faster than some other iterative algorithms in the existing literature. The purpose of this paper was to study using this iteration algorithm for the solution of nonlinear Volterra integral equations. It was investigated that the sequences obtained from this iteration algorithm converged to the solution of nonlinear Volterra integral equations. Moreover, data dependence was obtained for nonlinear Volterra integral equations. An example was given that confirmed the applicability of the newly proven theorems.

Does ecological footprint in ECCAS and ECOWAS converge? Empirical evidence from a panel unit root test with sharp and smooth breaks

Çelik, Orkun; Adali, Zafer; Bari, Bilgin

The costs due to climate change have been increasing day by day. In addition to the risk of losing our planet’s natural assets due to the increasing destructiveness of climate-related natural disasters and extreme climate events, we are also faced with grave economic risks. For this reason, researchers have recently focused on environmental issues. Nevertheless, they generally have investigated developed countries and ignored developing and least developed countries such as African countries. The United Nations (2015) report highlights that African countries should be specially investigated. Hence, the paper analyzes whether the ecological footprint in the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) converges for the period from 1961 to 2017. We employ Bahmani-Oskooee et al.’s (2014) panel unit root test with sharp and smooth breaks. The empirical findings demonstrate that the ecological footprint is stationary in ECCAS and ECOWAS. Stated in other words, the ecological footprint in these countries converges. Therefore, policymakers could implement similar policies to reduce the ecological footprint in these countries. This policy framework paves the way for an effective sustainable development.

The middle income trap: Theory and empirical evidence; [Orta gelir tuzagi: Teori ve ampirik kanit]

    Topal, Mehmet Hanefi

The middle income trap (MIT) is a concept that is often used in the economic development literature but is not defined clearly enough. The purpose of this study is to revise previous discussions on MIT and to make an empirical investigation of the existence of MIT in 44 middle-income countries based on Ye and Robertson's (2016) time series approach. Unlike conventional time series analyses, this study takes into consideration non-linearity in time series and smooth transition of structural breaks. The empirical findings of this study show the following results. There is strong evidence of the existence of MIT in seven countries. The stochastic convergence is valid for twenty one countries, including Turkey. The trend findings of the countries show that the income gap between ten countries and the US is decreasing quite slowly or increasing steadily. These results also indicate that economic and institutional reform requirements maintain their priority in the political agenda in most middle income - especially in Latin American - countries.

    Convergence in local press

Tingoy, Ozhan; Isikli, Sevki; Gumushane, Ali Ozcan

Improvements in information and communication technologies have evolved the way of traditional broadcasting. This evolvement is currently being experienced in press, eliminating the specific and clear lines of every kind of medium. Changing news production/distribution process as well as readers' consumption tendencies have brought up some kind of negative presumptions related with the future of press. Taken into consideration on the level of widespread newspapers, this evolvement is siginificant in respect of the future of local newspapers which count around 1400 in Turkey, trying to survive financial reasons. Fullfilling the evolvement triggered by information and communication technologies successfully, local newspapers are now expected to fulfill their alternative journalism mission against global media contents with the help of new media environment.
