Characterization of rosehip (Rosa canina L.) seed and seed oil

    Ilyasoǧlu, Huri

In this study, the nutritional composition and phytochemical composition of the rosehip seed, and the fatty acid and sterol compositions of the seed oil were investigated. The rosehip seed contained valuable phytochemicals such as phenolic compounds (2554 μg/g), carotenoids (2.92 μg/g), and ascorbic acid (1798 μg/g). Furthermore, the rosehip-seed oil was rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, linoleic acid (54.05%), linolenic acid (19.37%), and phytosterols, mainly β-sitosterol (82.1%). The rosehip seed and seed oil were found to have antioxidant activity measured by trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity assay. It can be concluded that the rosehip seed and seed oil may be utilized as a source of phytonutrients.

Mineral chemistry and thermobarometry of Eocene monzogabbroic stocks from the Bafra (Samsun) area in Turkey: Implications for disequilibrium crystallization and emplacement conditions

Temizel, İrfan; Arslan, Mehmet; Abdioğlu, Emel; Yücel, Cem

Monzogabbro stocks including felsic enclaves (monzosyenite) around the Bafra (Samsun) area at the western edge of the Eastern Pontides cut Eocene-aged volcanic and sedimentary units. The monzogabbros contain plagioclase, alkali feldspar, clinopyroxene, olivine, hornblende, biotite, apatite, and iron-titanium oxides, whereas the felsic enclaves contain alkali feldspar, plagioclase, hornblende, biotite, clinopyroxene, and iron-titanium oxides. Mineral chemistry data suggest that magmas experienced hydrous and anhydrous crystallization in deep and shallow crustal magma chambers. Several thermobarometers were used to estimate temperatures of crystallization and emplacement for the mafic and felsic magmas. Clinopyroxene thermobarometry yielded 1100-1232 C and 5.9-8.1 kbar for monzogabbros, and 931-1109 C and 1.8-6.9 kbar for felsic enclaves. Hornblende thermobarometry and oxygen fugacity estimates reveal 739-971°C, 7.0-9.2 kbar and 10−9.71 for monzogabbros and 681-928°C, 3.0-6.1 kbar and 10−11.34 for felsic enclaves. Biotite thermobarometry shows elevated oxygen fugacity varying from 10−18.9-10−11.07 at 632-904°C and 1.29-1.89 kbar for monzogabbros, to 10−15.99 -10−11.82 at 719-873°C and 1.41-1.77 kbar for felsic enclaves. The estimated zircon and apatite saturation temperatures are 504-590°C and 693-730°C for monzogabbros and 765-775°C and 641-690°C for felsic enclaves, respectively. These data imply that several phases in the gabbroic and syenitic magmas did not necessarily crystallize simultaneously and further indicate that the mineral compositions may register intervals of disequilibrium crystallization. Besides, thermobarometry contrasts between monzogabbro and felsic enclave may be partly a consequence of extended interactions between the mafic and felsic magmas by mixing/mingling and diffusion. Additionally, the hot felsic magma was close to liquidus conditions (crystallinity < 30%) when injected into cooler mafic magma (crystallinity > 50%), and thus, the monzogabbro stocks reflect hybrid products from the mingling and incomplete mixing of these two magmas.

Dehydrated hazelnut husk carbon: A novel sorbent for removal of Ni(II) ions from aqueous solution

Sivrikaya, Sezen; Albayrak, Sinem; Imamoglu, Mustafa; Gundogdu, Ali; Duran, Celal; Yildiz, Hulya

The present study has been performed to examine the adsorption ability of novel sorbent dehydrated hazelnut husk carbon (DHHC) towards Ni(II) ions from aqueous solution using the batch adsorption technique. The effective factors such as initial pH of the aqueous solution, contact time, initial Ni(II) concentration, adsorbent dosage, and temperature were investigated. The studies were also conducted to understand the effect of some co-existing ions which may be present in aqueous solutions. DHHC showed good adsorption potential for Ni(II) ions. The optimum initial pH value was selected as 5.0. The experimental data fitted well to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Among the kinetic models tested for the adsorption of Ni(II), the pseudo-second-order model showed a good fit of the kinetic data. The thermodynamic parameters including the Gibbs free energy (ΔG), enthalpy (ΔH), and entropy (ΔS) changes indicated that the adsorption of Ni(II) ions onto DHHC was feasible, spontaneous, and exothermic in the temperature range of 25-55°C. The results of this study showed the effectiveness and feasibility of DHHC for the removal of Ni(II) ions from aqueous solution.

Traditional Turkish masonry monumental structures and their Earthquake response

Doğangün, Adem; Sezen, Halil; Tuluk, Ö. İskender; Livaoğlu, Ramazan; Acar, Ramazan

Many historical and new masonry minarets were damaged or collapsed during the 1999 earthquakes in Kocaeli and Duzce, Turkey. These and other recent earthquakes not only caused loss of property but also loss of many lives. The structural failures and resulting casualties have led to discussion and investigation of potential reasons for poor seismic performance of masonry minarets. The primary goal of this study is to review the construction practices for historical and new masonry minarets in Turkey and to discuss the seismic damage observed in those structures. The architectural and structural properties of contemporary and historical Ottoman minarets and their components are presented. For example, a very old special technique for reinforcing and linking adjacent stone blocks with iron pieces in the vertical and horizontal directions is discussed. The structural damage examples are used to better understand the reasons for the observed failure mechanisms. It is concluded that the transition region between the square minaret boot and cylindrical body was most vulnerable to damage, and the iron clamps used in historical minarets effectively prevented structural damage.
