- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Assessment of topographically influenced gravity-height gradients and plumb line curvature at Sümela Monastery (Türkiye)
Tütüncü, Mehmet; Yilmaz, Nazan
Accurate estimation of gravity-height gradient and plumb line curvature is fundamental for gravity field modeling, geoid determination, and high-precision geodetic applications, especially in mountainous regions. This study presents an integrated computational framework combining terrestrial gravity observations, precise leveling, GNSS measurements, and Global Geopotential Models (GGMs) to estimate and compare gravity-height gradient and plumb line curvature in the rugged terrain surrounding S & uuml;mela Monastery. Simultaneous gravity and leveling surveys were conducted during two observation periods to compute actual and normal gradient, level surface curvature, and plumb line curvature. Additionally, twelve GGMs obtained from the ICGEM service were used to derive the same parameters through spherical harmonic expansions. A comprehensive statistical evaluation, including minimum, maximum, mean, standard deviation, and RMSE, was performed to assess the consistency between terrestrial and model-based results. The results show that normal gradient and level surface curvature from GGMs generally agree well with terrestrial data, whereas larger discrepancies occur in actual gradient and plumb line curvature in areas with steep topographic gradients. CHAMP-based models demonstrate comparatively better consistency in representing plumb line curvature. The proposed framework confirms the reliability of global models at regional scales while emphasizing the importance of terrestrial data in complex topographic environments.
- MakaleYalnız künye2025Economic vulnerability amidst contagion: analyzing unemployment via Covid-19-induced transaction costs
Cicen, Yildirim Beyazit
This study delves into the pandemic's influence on unemployment rates, employing the concept of transaction costs. Given the virus's infectious nature, each transaction carries the risk of infection. In this study, Covid-19-induced transaction costs were utilized to gauge the pandemic's impact on unemployment rates. Seven developed countries and seven developing countries were separately scrutinized for this purpose. According to the outcomes of Yilanci and Gorus' (2020) panel causality test, Covid-19-induced transaction costs did not influence unemployment rates in developed countries. However, they significantly impacted unemployment rates in developing countries. These findings underscore the resource gap between developed and developing nations in tackling pandemic-related challenges. Policymakers should consider these economic disparities when devising strategies to alleviate the pandemic's effects.

In response to the 2020 Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics, the Future Circular Collider (FCC) Feasibility Study was launched as an international collaboration hosted by CERN. This report describes the FCC integrated programme, which consists of two stages: an electron-positron collider (FCC-ee) in the first phase, serving as a high-luminosity Higgs, top, and electroweak factory; followed by a proton-proton collider (FCC-hh) at the energy frontier in the second phase. The FCC-ee is designed to operate at four key centre-of-mass energies: the Z pole, the WW pair production threshold, the ZH production peak, and the top/anti-top production threshold-each delivering the highest possible luminosities to four experiments. Over 15 years of operation, FCC-ee will produce more than 6 trillion Z bosons, 200 million WW pairs, nearly 3 million Higgs bosons, and 2 million top anti-top pairs. Precise energy calibration at the Z pole and WW threshold will be achieved through frequent resonant depolarisation of pilot bunches. The sequence of operation modes between the Z, WW, and ZH substages remains flexible. The FCC-hh will operate at a centre-of-mass energy of approximately 85 TeV-nearly an order of magnitude higher than the LHC-and is designed to deliver 5 to 10 times the integrated luminosity of the upcoming High-Luminosity LHC. Its mass reach for direct discovery extends to several tens of TeV. In addition to proton-proton collisions, the FCC-hh is capable of supporting ion-ion, ion-proton, and lepton-hadron collision modes. This second volume of the Feasibility Study Report presents the complete design of the FCC-ee collider, its operation and staging strategy, the full-energy booster and injector complex, required accelerator technologies, safety concepts, and technical infrastructure. It also includes the design of the FCC-hh hadron collider, development of high-field magnets, hadron injector options, and key technical systems for FCC-hh.

Benedikt, M.; Zimmermann, F.; Auchmann, B.; Bartmann, W.; Burnet, J. P.; Carli, C.; Chancé, A.; Craievich, P.; Giovannozzi, M.; Grojean, C.
Volume 3 of the FCC Feasibility Report presents studies related to civil engineering, the development of a project implementation scenario, and environmental and sustainability aspects. The report details the iterative improvements made to the civil engineering concepts since 2018, taking into account subsurface conditions, accelerator and experiment requirements, and territorial considerations. It outlines a technically feasible and economically viable civil engineering configuration that serves as the baseline for detailed subsurface investigations, construction design, cost estimation, and project implementation planning. Additionally, the report highlights ongoing subsurface investigations in key areas to support the development of an improved 3D subsurface model of the region. The report describes the development of the project scenario based on the 'avoid-reduce-compensate' iterative optimisation approach. The reference scenario balances optimal physics performance with territorial compatibility, implementation risks, and costs. Environmental field investigations covering almost 600 hectares of terrain-including numerous urban, economic, social, and technical aspects-confirmed the project's technical feasibility and contributed to the preparation of essential input documents for the formal project authorisation phase. The summary also highlights the initiation of public dialogue as part of the authorisation process. The results of a comprehensive socio-economic impact assessment, which included significant environmental effects, are presented. Even under the most conservative and stringent conditions, a positive benefit-cost ratio for the FCC-ee is obtained. Finally, the report provides a summary of the studies conducted to document the current state of the environment.

Tonkaz, Mehmet; Nas, Omer Fatih; Erkal Tonkaz, Duygu; Inecikli, Mehmet Fatih; Ongen, Gokhan; Ozkaya, Guven
Background: Chemoembolization with small drug-eluting microspheres is widely used in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of transarterial chemoembolization with doxorubicin-eluting 30-60-mu m microspheres (DEB-TACE) in patients with Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stage A and B HCC. Materials and methods: In this single-center study, 88 patients with HCC (BCLC A/B: 15.9%/84.1%) who underwent 137 DEB-TACE sessions between January 2015 and December 2020 were retrospectively assessed. Response to treatment was assessed 4-8 weeks after each DEB-TACE procedure according to mRECIST (Modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors) criteria. Progression-free survival (PFS), time to progression (TTP), overall survival (OS), and adverse events were recorded. Results: In 88 patients (84.1% males; median age, 66.0 years; range, 22-83), the median follow-up was 17 months (range, 2-64). Eight patients (9.1%) had a complete response, 42 (47.8%) had partial regression, 10 (11.3%) had stable disease, and 28 (31.8%) had progressive disease. There was a statistically significant difference between serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels before and after DEB-TACE treatment (p < 0.001). The median OS was 17 months (95% confidence interval [CI], 10.3-23.7). Cox regression analyses found that preprocedural serum AFP level (400+ vs. < 400; p = 0.024), Child Pugh classification (B vs. A; p = 0.019), and number of DEB-TACE sessions (1 vs. > 1; p = 0.003) were independent risk factors affecting OS. The median PFS was 8 months (95% CI, 5.8-10.2) and TTP was 6 months (1-14 months). Conclusion: Chemoembolization with 30-60-mu m microspheres is an effective and safe treatment for HCC. The number of DEB-TACE sessions is also one of the factors affecting OS.

In response to the 2013 Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics, the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study was launched, as an international collaboration hosted by CERN. This study covers a highest-luminosity high-energy lepton collider (FCC-ee) and an energy-frontier hadron collider (FCC-hh), which could, successively, be installed in the same 100 km tunnel. The scientific capabilities of the integrated FCC programme would serve the worldwide community throughout the 21st century. The FCC study also investigates an LHC energy upgrade, using FCC-hh technology. This document constitutes the second volume of the FCC Conceptual Design Report, devoted to the electron-positron collider FCC-ee. After summarizing the physics discovery opportunities, it presents the accelerator design, performance reach, a staged operation scenario, the underlying technologies, civil engineering, technical infrastructure, and an implementation plan. FCC-ee can be built with today's technology. Most of the FCC-ee infrastructure could be reused for FCC-hh. Combining concepts from past and present lepton colliders and adding a few novel elements, the FCC-ee design promises outstandingly high luminosity. This will make the FCC-ee a unique precision instrument to study the heaviest known particles (Z, W and H bosons and the top quark), offering great direct and indirect sensitivity to new physics.

- MakaleYalnız künye2018Evaluation of acute kidney injury (AKI) with RIFLE, AKIN, CK, and KDIGO in critically ill trauma patients
Ülger, F.; Küçuk, M. Pehlivanlar; Kucuk, A. O.; Ilkaya, N. K.; Murat, N.; Bilgiç, B.; Abanoz, H.
The aim of our study was to evaluate the effects of AKI development on mortality with four different classification systems (RIFLE, AKIN, CK, KDIGO) in critically ill trauma patients followed in the intensive care unit. A retrospective review of 2034 patients in our intensive care unit was conducted between July 2010 and August 2013. A total of 198 patients with primary trauma were included in the study to evaluate the development of AKI. When the presence of AKI was investigated according to the four criteria (RIFLE, AKIN, CK, and KDIGO), the highest incidence of AKI was found according to the KDIGO classification (74.2%), followed by AKIN (72.2%), RIFLE (69.7%), and CK (59.1%). It was observed that more AKI developed according to KDIGO in patients with multiple trauma and thoracic trauma (p = 0.031, p = 0.029). Sixty-two (31%) of the 198 trauma patients monitored in the intensive care unit died; mortality was frequently found high in AKI stage 2 and 3 patients. According to the CK classification, there was a significant increase in mortality in patients with AKI on the first day (p = 0.045). AKI classifications by RIFLE, AKIN, CK, and KDIGO were independently associated with the risk of in-hospital death. In this study, the presence of AKI was found to be an independent risk factor in the development of in-hospital mortality according to all classification systems (RIFLE, AKIN, CK, and KDIGO) in critically traumatic patients followed in ICU, and the compatibility between RIFLE, AKIN, and KDIGO was the highest among the classification systems.
- MakaleYalnız künye2018Automatic extraction of sparse trees from high-resolution ortho-images

Obtaining information about tree species distribution in agricultural lands is a topic of interest for various applications, such as tree inventory, forest management, agricultural land management, crop estimation, etc. This information can be derived from images obtained from modern remote sensing technology, which is the most economical way as compare to field surveys covering large geographic areas. Therefore, in this study, a new method is proposed for extraction and counting of sparse and regular distributed individual pistachio trees from agricultural areas on large scale from high-resolution digital ortho-photo maps, which were obtained using an airborne sensor (Ultracam-X). The input images were first smoothed by applying Gaussian filter to reduce the impact of noise. Normalized difference vegetation indices (NDVI) were then derived to obtain vegetation areas followed by Otsu's global thresholding algorithm to obtain candidate tree areas. Further, connected component (CC) analysis was applied to segregate each object. Morphological processing was performed to fill holes within tree objects and get smooth contours, which were obtained by using the Moore-neighbor tracing method (MNTM) for each CC, while geometrical constraints were applied to undermine possible non-tree elements from output image. To further improve the segmentation results for sparse trees, a new method was applied, called quadratic local analysis (QLA). QLA helped to segment the trees, which were missed by the Otsu method due to low contrast and resulted in improved accuracy (3-6%). The obtained results were compared with well-known support vector machine (SVM) classifier. Proposed method produced slightly better results (1-5%) than SVM for extraction of pistachio trees and obtained accuracy for QLA and SVM were 96 and 91% for region 1, while 91 and 90% for region 2 respectively.
- MakaleYalnız künye2014A large and rapid planar failure: Causes, mechanism, and consequences (Mordut, Gumushane, Turkey)
Alemdag, S.; Akgun, A.; Kaya, A.; Gokceoglu, C.
Gumushane is a small city located on highway connecting the harbour city Trabzon in the Black Sea Region of Turkey to the Eastern Anatolia. Following an excavation to create an area for housing on the northeast side of this highway, a large and rapid planar failure inclined to the southwest occurred. A large amount of fractured and weathered granitic material moved downward over this planar failure. After the failure, the highway was closed to traffic for 1 week, and more than ten houses on top of this failure were collapsed completely. The present study aims to investigate the mechanism of this failure. The study was performed using kinematical, limit equilibrium and numerical analyses for both post- and pre-failure conditions. Based on the detailed field observations, the failure mode was determined to be planar, and the slide mechanism was determined to be controlled by three fault planes. As a result of these analyses, it can be concluded that the slope before failure had critical conditions and that the excavation and uncontrolled blasting triggered and accelerated the slope failure.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2012Assessment of permeability and injection depth at the Atasu dam site (Turkey) based on experimental and numerical analyses
Gurocak, Zulfu; Alemdag, Selcuk
This study was performed in order to evaluate the permeability of the basalts and pyroclastics and the maximum depth of grout injection at the Atasu dam site, Turkey, using the equations of Kiraly and Hoek and Bray based on values obtained from Lugeon tests. In order to evaluate maximum discharge values and depth of injection, seepage analyses were performed using the finite element technique for each 10 m up to 100 m. The results indicate that to establish an impermeable zone at the dam site, the depth of injection should be taken as 50 m for the left and right slopes and 40 m for the river bed.
- MakaleYalnız künye2008Influence of weathering on the engineering properties of Harsit granitic rocks (NE Turkey)
Ceryan, Sener; Tudes, Sule; Ceryan, Nurcihan
Weathering and hydrothermal alteration of the granitic rocks in the Eastern Black Sea Region (NE Turkey) are important phenomena affecting the engineering projects in the region. The study investigated the probable paths of rock-forming mineral transformations due to weathering in the Harsit granitoid rocks, the changes of the major oxides as a consequence of weathering and the effects of weathering on the engineering properties. To identify the changes in the major oxides, the volume concentrations were considered in relation to the dry density. Chemical leaching during weathering was shown to be significant in changing the minerals. It was concluded that the engineering properties of the weathered granitic rocks can be most reliably predicted by P-wave velocity.
