Effect of Interventions to Reduce Fear of Childbirth in Pregnancy: Meta-Analysis

Sarı, Tuğba; Gürhan, Nermin; Uzun, Sevda

BACKGROUND: Some pregnant women have negative emotions that may predominate and they may develop a fear of childbirth. This causes negative consequences for their health and well-being. A complete definition of the causes of childbirth fear has not yet been established in the literature, but in a systematic review, various factors were found. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to reveal the effect of educational, cognitive, and behavioral interventions on the reduction of fear of childbirth (FOC) in pregnant women. METHODS: For this meta-analysis study, articles in PubMed, EBSCOhost, Web of Science, YÖK Thesis Center, and Google Scholar databases were searched without any year limitation in between September 2022 and February 2023. A total of 25 studies were included in this meta-analysis. The data were analyzed by meta-analysis and narrative methods. RESULTS: This meta-analysis showed that educational, cognitive, and behavioral interventions were effective in reducing FOC in pregnant women (standardized mean difference: −1.229, 95% confidence interval [−1.586, −0.872]; Z = −6,746, p = .000, I2 = 94.225%). In subgroup analyzes, intervention types such as antenatal education, mindfulness, psychoeducation, and psychotherapy were found to be effective in reducing FOC. Interventions applied to women who have FOC reduce the FOC and provide a more positive birth experience. CONCLUSION: Results of the present study showed that educational programs could serve as an important tool in reducing women’s fear from natural childbirth and in choosing physiologic birth.

Perspectives on the mental health of immigrant children in the pediatric emergency department: a phenomenological study

    Uzun, Sevda; Ustuner Top, Fadime

The concept of immigration is a complex phenomenon that goes far beyond mere relocation and refers to the transition from one social environment to another or from one culture to another. Immigration and its effects on children are regarded as global and interdisciplinary problems. This study aims to reveal the opinions of nurses working in the pediatric emergency department about the mental health of immigrant children. In this qualitative research, a phenomenological research design was used (N = 19).Interviews were conducted using a semi-structured interview form. Colaizzi’s method was used to analyze the data manually. Four categories, eleven themes, and thirty-eight sub-themes emerged from the analysis of the data. The difficulties nurses experience with immigrant children and their relatives in providing care include communication problems, cultural problems, and economic problems. The causes of mental health problems in immigrant children include war, exposure to immigration traumas, cultural assimilation problems, loss/absence of parents, economic reasons/excessive role overload, and exposure to neglect and/or abuse. Education, economic aid, communication, non-stigmatization, and social support were identified as significant sub-themes for practices to protect/promote children’s mental health. The study showed that immigrant children experience physical and mental problems. Nurses struggle to treat immigrant children effectively but have difficulties due to insufficient facilities. It may be suggested to include cultural care models in patient care.

Ediz, Cicek; Uzun, Sevda; Mohammadnezhad, Masoud; Erdas, Mehmed B.

Background:Cultural beliefs significantly shape societal attitudes toward mental illness, and these social attitudes profoundly impact help-seeking behaviors. Therefore, it is important to focus on understanding and addressing these social behaviors.Aim:This study aimed to evaluate the effect of chronic mental illness interpretations based on culture and religious beliefs on non-medical help-seeking behaviors among patients in T & uuml;rkiye. Methods:The study was conducted from September to October 2023 using an inductive qualitative approach. In-depth face-to-face interviews were carried out with individuals diagnosed with chronic mental illness and their relatives, registered in a state-owned Community Mental Health Center (CMHC) in T & uuml;rkiye. Using purposive sampling, 13 individuals who met the criteria were interviewed. Thematic analysis was used to identify themes. Results:Three main themes and eight sub-themes were identified, including the reasons for seeking non-medical help (psychological challenges, subjective norms, physical requirements), factors contributing to seeking non-medical help (predisposing factors, enabling factors, and myths), and reflections on the benefits of non-medical practices (perceived physical benefits, perceived psychological benefits). Conclusions:It was concluded that individuals with chronic mental illness and their relatives living in the Eastern Anatolia Region of T & uuml;rkiye engaged in non-medical help-seeking behaviors and mostly turned to traditional religious practices. Culture and religious beliefs emerged as primary factors leading patients to seek non-medical treatment approaches.
