Bülbül, Kenan; Türkkan, Tugba; Meriç, Cagdas Salih; Yilmaz, Haci Omer

Eating disorders are a problem that negatively affects physical and psychological development and can potentially be life-threatening. In order to successfully combat this disorder, it is important to have a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms. The aim of this study is to examine the mediating role of impulsivity in the relationship between internet addiction and eating disorders in an adolescent sample. The current research was designed in accordance with the correlational model. The study group was formed by convenience sampling method among students who continue their education in secondary schools and high schools in Trabzon. The data of the study were collected with a demographic information form prepared by the researchers, the Young Internet Addiction Test-Short Form, Rezzy Eating Disorders Scale and Barratt Impulsivity Scale-Short Form. As a result of statistical analysis, it was determined that the average eating disorder score of female students was higher than that of male students. It was found that the eating disorder scores of those whose income was less than their expenses were significantly higher than those whose income was more than their expenses. Positive significant relationships have been identified between internet addiction and eating disorders. It has also been determined that impulsive behavior plays a mediating role in the relationship between internet addiction and eating disorders. It is thought that the current findings will contribute to the understanding of the mechanisms underlying eating disorders and the development of effective prevention and intervention strategies.

The aim of the study was to compare the effects of acute intake dietary sugars on cognitive performance and reaction time. This study was, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind experimental design, conducted with 75 healthy adults. At the beginning of the study, the participants (36 male, 39 female; 21.6 ± 1.3 years of age; body mass index: 21.59 ± 1.94 kg/m2) were randomly divided into equal five groups (n:15) (glucose (10 g), fructose (10 g), sucrose (10 g), saccharin (0.24 g), placebo), and received dietary sugars dissolved in 200 mL of water. Cognitive performance was determined with Cancelation Test, and the Simple Response Time and Ruler Drop Tests were used in order to response and reaction time of participants, respectively. General score of cognitive performance (0.93 ± 0.1), reaction (295 ± 20 ms), and response (204 ms) were highest in glucose and lowest in placebo (0.63 ± 0.1; 368 ± 22 ms; 251 ms, respectively) (p <.001). Saccharin groups had a higher reaction (312 ± 22 ms) and response (216 ms) time score compared to consumed fructose (316 ± 39; 227 ms), sucrose (354 ± 26; 246 ms), and placebo (368 ± 22; 251 ms) groups, respectively (p <.001). These findings show that differences in the absorption pattern and sweetness levels of sugar types may have different effects on cognitive performance and reaction time.

Türkkan, Tuğba; Bülbül, Kenan; Yilmaz, Hacı Ömer; Meriç, Çağdaş Salih

This research was conducted determine the mediating role of eating habits in the effect of internet and smartphone addiction on body mass index. The study group consisted of 604 individuals aged between 18 and 45 years (Mean(Age) = 21.07, SD = 3.00). Data were collected using Young Internet Addiction Scale, Smartphone Addiction Scale Short Form and Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire. Findings show positive correlations between internet addiction and smartphone addiction with uncontrolled eating, cognitive restraint and emotional eating behavior. Internet and smartphone addiction were determined to positively predict emotional eating behavior, uncontrolled eating behavior and cognitive restraint. The direct effect and total effect of internet addiction on body mass index were insignificant. However results show that both smartphone and internet use by individuals affect body mass index mediated by eating behavior. This is the first study showing that smartphone and internet use both affected body mass index mediated by eating behavior. Research results emphasise the threat of addiction on physical health and suggest that educational and cognitive dietary interventions can contribute to healthy eating habits. Additionally, considering the internet may be used as an emotion regulation strategy, intervention programs may focus on developing emotion regulation skills aiming to develop coping ability for negative emotions to reduce emotional or uncontrolled eating.

Doğan, Gökcen; Tokaç Er, Nida; Öztürk, Meryem Elif; Meriç, Çağdaş Salih; Yilmaz, Hacı Ömer; Yabanci Ayhan, Nurcan

Aim: The aims of this study were to evaluate hand grip strength in young adults, to examine its relationship with anthropometric values, and to determine which values are predictive. Subject and methods: This prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted with 913 healthy young adults aged 18–30 years. A questionnaire form was administered in face-to-face interviews, and anthropometric measurements including height, body weight, waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), mid-upper arm circumference (MAC), neck circumference (NC), triceps skinfold thickness (TSF), and hand grip strength (kg) were performed for each participant. Results: Hand grip strength was significantly higher for men than for women (p < 0.001), and was also higher in obese and overweight people compared to underweight participants (p < 0.001). Hand grip strength was correlated with weight, height, body mass index, MAC, TSF, WC, and NC (p < 0.001). The predictive ability of anthropometric measurements in estimating hand grip strength was thus demonstrated in a large population of healthy young adults. Significant regression was found, with an R2 value of 0.556. Hand grip strength increased by 0.282 kg for each centimeter of height and by 0.135 kg for each centimeter of MAC. The hand grip strength of male participants was 0.424 kg greater than that of females. Height, MAC, TSF, and sex were significant predictors of hand grip strength. Conclusion: According to our results, variability in hand grip strength among healthy subjects can be explained by height, MAC, TSF, WC, HC, age, and sex. The estimation of hand grip strength could be established based on these demographic and anthropometric variables.

Yılmaz, Hacı Ömer; Şahin, Kezban; Ayvaz, Hilal

Objective: Obesity may negatively affect the physical health and cognitive functions of individuals and delay their reaction time to stimuli. However, the association among obesity, cognitive functions, and reaction times is yet to be fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of obesity on cognitive functions and visual and auditory reaction times in adults. Methods: Data of 100 participants (50 obese and 50 normal) were analyzed in the study. Anthropometric parameters and 24-h dietary recall data were recorded. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was used to evaluate the cognitive functions, Simple Reaction Time Task (SRTT)-Visual and SRTT-Auditory were used to assess visual and auditory reaction times of the participants, respectively. Results: The mean MoCA score of the obese was significantly lower than normal (17.46 and 25.22, respectively; p < 0.001). In addition, the mean auditory (p < 0.001) and visual (p < 0.05) reaction times of obese were significantly longer than normal. Similarly, this condition was also observed for the fastest and lowest values of auditory and visual reaction times. Additionally, obesity caused a decrease in the MoCA score (β = -0.762; p < 0.001) and delayed visual (β = 0.423; p < 0.001) and auditory (β = 0.590; p < 0.001) reactions. The negative effect of obesity was maintained after controlling for potential factors (MoCA, β = -0.594; p < 0.001; SRTT-Auditory, β = 0.409; p < 0.01; SRTT-Visual, β = 0.330; p < 0.05). Conclusion: Obese participants showed worse cognitive, auditory and visual performance. Additional research will be necessary in the future to shed light on the fundamental mechanisms involved.

Is environment destiny? Spatial analysis of the relationship between geographic factors and obesity in Türkiye

Yılmaz, Hacı Ömer; Günen, Mehmet Akif

This study aims to evaluate the relationship of geographical factors, including precipitation, slope, air pollution and elevation with adult obesity prevalence in Türkiye (TR) using a cross-regional study design. Ordinary least squares (OLS) and geographically weighted regression (GWR) were performed to evaluate the spatial variation in the relationship between all geographic factors and obesity prevalence. In the model, a positive relationship was found between obesity prevalence and slope, whereas a negative significant relationship was determined between obesity prevalence and elevation (p < 0.05). These results, revealing spatially varying associations, were very useful in refining the interpretations of the statistical results on adult obesity. This research suggests that geographical factors should be considered as one of the components of the obesogenic environment. In addition, it is recommended that national and international strategies to overcome obesity should be restructured by taking into account the geographical characteristics of the region.

Grains and Pulses in Diets of the Middle East and a Focus on Buckwheat

Yılmaz, Hacı Ömer; Meriç, Çağdaş Salih

Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench and Fagopyrum tataricum (L.) Gaertn.) is believed to have originated in central Asia. Chiefly cultivated in India, Nepal, China, North Korea, Russia, and Japan, it is a pseudocereal containing high protein, dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and important antioxidants and phenolic compounds. In addition to its high protein bioavailability and economic value, it is an important alternative food with high nutritional value, suitable for the diet of celiac patients because it does not contain gluten. Buckwheat has gained worldwide importance because of the presence of some important bioactive constituents such as rutin, orientin, vitexin, quercetin, isovitexin, and isoorientin; other essential components like fagopyritols find vast potential for glycemic control in type 2 diabetics, positive cardiovascular effects, treatment of celiac disease, prevention of gallstones, and several hormone-dependent tumors. Currently, various products of buckwheat like flour, bread, biscuits, cookies, muffins, cakes, pasta, noodles, crackers, chips, and various fermented products and desserts are available in the market. Buckwheat has attracted worldwide attention, especially from food scientists, for its healing effects over chronic diseases. This chapter focuses on buckwheat in diets of the Middle East and its important effects on health.

Meriç, Çağdaş Salih; Yabanci Ayhan, Nurcan; Yilmaz, Hacı Ömer

Background/Purpose: This study was carried out to evaluate the nutritional status of elderly who received home health care. Methods: A total of 120 elderly were included in this cross sectional study. Elderly were visited in their homes and nutritional status of them was evaluated by Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form (MNA-SF) scale. In questionnaire; general information about elderly, presence of chronic disease, pressure sores, anthropometric measurement, nutritional status of elderly were asked. In addition, current biochemical parameters which were routinely evaluated in elderly were recorded by the researcher. Results: The mean age of elderly (40 males and 80 females) was 81.3±8.3 (65-105) years, and 97.5% of elderly were diagnosed with at least one disease. According to the MNA-SF score, 60.8% of elderly were classified as malnourished, 34.2% at risk for malnutrition and 5.0% as normal nutritional status. Currently, 49.2% of malnourished elderly have pressure sores and 54.8% had at least once before; these rates were higher than elderly without malnutrition (p <0.001). In addition, total MNA-SF score of elderly is strongly positive with hemoglobin, hematocrit and calf circumference; it was found that there was a strong negative correlation with C-reactive protein (CRP). Conclusion: In this study, it was found that only 5.0% of elderly who received home health care were in good nutritional status and pressure sore was higher in elderly who have risk of malnutrition or malnourished. Nutritional status of elderly receiving home health care should be evaluated by dietitians and more comprehensive scientific studies are needed.

The Relationship between Body Mass Index and Eating Disorder Risk and Intuitive Eating among Young Adults

Yılmaz, Hacı Ömer; Zemzemoglu, Tuba Eda Arpa

Background: Obesity is a serious health problem that threatens public health. There are limited researches exploring the relationship between obesity and eating disorder risk and intuitive eating. The purpose of this study was to determine the rate of eating disorder risk and obesity, and identify the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and eating disorder risk and intuitive eating among young adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 1216 young adults. The data were obtained through a questionnaire consisted of three sections of socio-demographic information in the first part, Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2) in second part and Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26) in third part. Weight, height, and BMI of participants were also measured by researchers. Results: The overall overweight/obesity rate of the participants was 16% (male=25.9%; female=10.9%). The rate of eating disorders risk was 24.3% in general (male=21.5%; female=25.4%). Overweight/obese had higher eating disorders risk than normal and underweight (26.7%, 23.8%, 21.6%, respectively). IES-2 score of underweight was significantly higher than overweight/obese (3.33±0.35, 3.20±0.37, respectively). Conclusion: This is the first study to examine the relationship between BMI and EAT-26 subscale showing that BMI was positively correlated with EAT-26 and negatively was correlated with IES-2 score. Therefore, BMI may be affected by eating behaviors and intuitive eating. Also, intuitive eating can be a new method of eating, and weight control and management.
