    Social Media and Lynch Culture

    Demir, Sertac Timur; Özcan, Ali

In this article, it is argued that social media, which enters daily life with the promises of freedom of expression, unhindered communication and unlimited sharing, but adapts nearly all relationships and experiences to itself in a short time, has evolved into a medium of mass hatred and uncanny. It is also claimed that the users are an inevitable part of the global network in the shadow of this sharp transformation, which appears as the rise of the lynching culture, whose causes are virtual and the consequences are real. Accordingly, contrary to the illusory abstraction in this medium, the digital traces that users leave behind are permanent and indelible. For this reason, people who were once the subject of collective lynching by taking refuge in the anonymity of the masses can be the target of the same masses at any time. In other words, in this cyber-space, when the texts are taken out of their context; when the conjuncture changes or when personal data is hacked in an unpredictable manner, the whole course of events that was once considered perfect and smooth can suddenly reverse. This ambiguous situation is the unaccounted reflection and widespread trend of the mass and social media, which produces its own notion of mass, beyond the pre-defined justifications. In social media, users are the hostage of each post they make and each website they visit. In this research, this problematic is analysed through the episode of Hated in the Nation of the popular science fiction series Black Mirror and in the context of virtual lynching, digital masses and mobile technologies. The framework of this interdisciplinary study, which is based on digital humanities approaches, is structured around the theories of thinkers such as Zygmunt Bauman, Jean Baudrillard and Byung Chul-Han who offer stimulating perspectives on the issue.

Surveillance has functioned throughout history to provide control in almost all communities. Surveillance is as old as the history of mankind, and in this direction it has kept pace with the changes and transformations that society has undergone. Surveillance, which has become widespread with the renewal of surveillance tools, has brought with it the question of security and privacy. The problem of security and privacy of surveillance affects not only new technological tools but also all social activities with the widespread use of information technology in recent years. Is security provided with surveillance technology in this study? Does this surveillance cause privacy violations? Thus, the surveillance awareness was tried to be measured in 3 parts and 44 questions. Atatürk University, Bayburt University, Bitlis Eren University, Gümüşhane University and Karadeniz Technical University were applied to a total of 407 people. Because of inconsistent or incorrect coding, 21 questionnaires were not included in the analysis and 386 questionnaires were analyzed. Attitudes of students to surveillance awareness, surveillance security and privacy have been tried to be understood. According to the survey, most of the students are not aware of the surveillance done. We see that people are able to compromise privacy when it comes to security, and they are willing to be exposed to security concerns. So we can say that your security comes before privacy.

Digital Media Literacy: Problems, Practices and Expectations

    Özcan, Ali

While having various tools was a necessity in order to read book /newspaper/magazine, to watch television/movie, to listen to music, and to play video games until a few years ago, it is now possible to join all these events simultaneously through just one device depending on developments in communication technologies. These innovations and accessibility make media integrated life style possible, and turn ‘the virtual world’ into real space in which society itself comes into being. Individual, who plays passive parts as viewer/reader/listener in traditional media, however improves his/her position as participant/producer in the new media. At this point, it is crucial to grow responsible people who has heightened awareness, who are critical and who are able to take decisions actively about issues on the new media, as total of changes in medium/instrument itself, consumer/individual and communication style. For this reason, the media literacy that has applied in tradition media such as newspaper, radio and television should be integrated into the new media milieu such as internet, social network and mobile media. In developing and diversifying new media milieu taking active role of individuals, creating awareness regarding tools, making sense of contents and interpreting them in critical perspective are the most significant matters. While printed texts’ literacy is prerequisite for fitting into society, literacy in the present-day new communication media has been basic condition of complete and accurate enlightenment against the intensive information bomb. In this study, the necessity of transformation of the phenomenon ‘literacy’ from traditional to the new media is discussed through the new media literacy applications

    Özcan, Ali

Studies on local journalism as an important element of participatory democracy generally focus on the history of the local press, the financial insufficiencies of local newspapers as well as technical/technological incompetency that occurs as a result of these factors. This research analyzes local newspapers with a new scientific point of view by focusing on the perception of locality as a mental projection of geographical constraint. Perspectives regarding the transformations on perceptions of locality as a result of the disappearance of time and space constraints due to new communication technologies, and the opportunities that new communication environments offer to local newspapers will be provided. Moreover, the ways in which local newspapers reflect on locality with their printed versions under time and space constraints will be analyzed. The research scope of the study has been limited to 15 newspapers in Konya. Structured interviews and content analysis methods were used for data collection and analysis.
