[Policing the Postcolonial Family: Rethinking Hanif Kureishi’s “My Son the Fanatic” through F. Fanon and D. Bigo]

    Yalçın, Elif Güvendi

[Abstract] This article offers a critical re-evaluation of Hanif Kureishi’s short story “My Son the Fanatic” at the intersection of Frantz Fanon’s postcolonial psychoanalysis and Didier Bigo’s security studies. Moving beyond conventional readings that center generational conflict, religious radicalism, or immigrant assimilation, the study foregrounds surveillance as a constitutive force shaping postcolonial subjectivity within diasporic family dynamics. It is argued that Kureishi’s narrative dramatizes the internalization of state logics of suspicion and control, whereby the immigrant father, Parvez, becomes both the subject and the agent of a dispersed surveillance apparatus. Drawing on Bigo’s concept of the ban-opticon and its emphasis on anticipatory governance and affective regulation, the article examines how fear of deviance displaces paternal care with a mode of domestic policing. Simultaneously, Fanon’s notion of epidermalization elucidates how the colonized subject internalizes visibility as a site of control, resulting in a fractured self constantly navigating racialized gazes and cultural expectations. Exclusion, bureaucracy and racialized migration in abdulrazak gurnah’s by the sea

    Yalcin, Elif Guvendi

Abdulrazak Gurnah's By the Sea (2002) interrogates the paradoxes of hospitality within the asylum process, revealing how conditional welcome operates as a mechanism of control rather than care. Through a critical engagement with Jacques Derrida's hostipitality and Achille Mbembe's necropolitics, this article examines the protagonist's arrival in England and his subsequent placement in a deteriorating Bed and Breakfast as an extension of state governance over displaced subjects. While asylum ostensibly signifies protection, the conditions imposed upon refugees transform hospitality into an instrument of containment, where inclusion is contingent upon submission to bureaucratic and social constraints. Drawing on Derrida's theorization of hospitality as inherently violent, the study demonstrates how the host's power to grant refuge simultaneously reinforces the foreigner's subjugation. Mbembe’s necropolitics further illuminates the ways in which asylum seekers exist within a state of managed decay, where their survival is permitted yet systematically devalued. Gurnah's portrayal of the asylum process thus critiques the host nation’s myth of benevolence, exposing the coercive structures that sustain postcolonial modes of regulation and exclusion. By situating By the Sea within this theoretical framework, the article argues that the novel problematizes the ethical contradictions of asylum policies, revealing how displaced individuals are reduced to spectral presences within the host nation’s borders.

Living like a tree: narratives of slow violence in arundhati roy's the ministry of utmost happiness

    Yalcin, Elif Guvendi

This article bridges postcolonial studies and ecocriticism to explore the entanglement of environmental degradation and systemic marginalization in Arundhati Roy's The Ministry of Utmost Happiness. Mainly anchored in the theoretical framework of Nixon's concept of "slow violence," this study examines how colonial and neo-colonial ideologies perpetuate ecological exploitation and social inequality. Through characters such as Anjum and Gulabiya, Roy critiques the intersection of environmental injustices, displacement, and socio-political exclusion. Anjum's existence within a graveyard, which is a symbolic site of ecological decay, exemplifies the gradual violence inflicted upon marginalized communities, while the extinction of white-backed vultures symbolizes the ecological ramifications of industrial modernity. Additionally, the Narmada Bachao Andolan and the Bhopal disaster serve as critical case studies of environmental racism, highlighting the disproportionate burdens borne by the Global South in the name of development. By engaging with colonial legacies such as deforestation and industrial expansion, the article underscores how contemporary globalization replicates the exploitative dynamics of imperialism. Roy's narrative strategies amplify the silenced experiences of the dispossessed while critiquing the ethical failures of anthropocentrism and capitalist modernity. The article concludes by emphasizing the role of literature as an activist medium, capable of rendering visible the imperceptible impacts of ecological and social violence. In doing so, it advocates for postcolonial ecocriticism as an essential lens for addressing global environmental and cultural issues.

Challenging Neo-Orientalism: Muslim Identity and the Israel-Palestine Conflict in Teju Cole's Open City

    Yalcin, Elif Guvendi

This article explores Teju Cole's Open City (2011) as a profound critique of neo-Orientalist discourses in the post-9/11 era, focusing on Farouq, an Arab-Muslim intellectual in Brussels. Grounded in Edward Said's Orientalism and Hamid Dabashi's neo-Orientalism, the analysis reveals how Farouq resists Western pressures to assimilate or enact commodified versions of his identity, challenging the persistent demand for "oriental fantasy" narratives. The novel situates Farouq's personal struggles within geopolitical tensions, notably the Israel-Palestine conflict, which characters frame as a defining contemporary issue. This perspective counters neo-Orientalist assertions that attribute Middle Eastern instability to inherent cultural flaws, instead critiquing Western imperialism and media distortions. The study contrasts Farouq's revolutionary consciousness with Dr. Maillotte's liberal dismissal of his grievances, exposing subtle neo-Orientalist mechanisms that mask structural inequities under a veneer of openness. Through its dialogic structure and reflective narrator, Julius, Open City fosters authentic intercultural exchange, disrupting monolithic portrayals of Muslim identities. The article argues that Cole's narrative not only contests reductive stereotypes but also positions literature as a vital medium for advocating equitable identity representations in a globalized world. By centering Farouq's intellectual agency and experiences, the study contributes significantly to understanding identity politics and representation in postcolonial literature, underscoring the enduring relevance of Said's critique in contemporary global discourses.

Navigating Global Migration: An Analysis of Exit West through Appadurai’s Five Scapes

    Yalcin, Elif Guvendi

The rapid surge in global migration today is deeply intertwined with shifts in the political and economic structures of the late twentieth century, characterized by the dominance of globalization and transnational capital. These shifts, while rooted in the historical legacies of colonialism, have assumed new dimensions as globalization reconfigures the movement of people, capital, and ideas. In Exit West, Mohsin Hamid connects the personal experiences of migration with larger global forces, using magical doors to metaphorically illustrate the fluidity and unpredictability of global migration patterns. This paper employs Arjun Appadurai's five "scapes," which are ethnoscapes, technoscapes, financescapes, mediascapes, and ideoscapes, to examine how Exit West reflects and critiques the dynamics of globalization, migration, and identity formation. Hamid highlights how technological advancements facilitate movement while simultaneously revealing the inequalities that persist under the guise of globalization. Through the journeys of Saeed and Nadia, the novel reveals the fragmented nature of global flows and their impact on personal and collective identities.

Kıyafet Kuralları: Frances Burney'in Evelina; or the History of a young Lady's Entrance into the World (1778) adlı romanı Üzerinden On Sekizinci Yüzyıl Londra'sında Toplumsal Cinsiyet ve Modanın Perde Arkasını Aralamak

    Yalcin, Elif Guvendi

Bu makale, Frances Burney'in Evelina; or the History of a Young Lady's Entrance into the World (1778) adlı ünlü eserini temel referans olarak kullanarak 18. yüzyıl Londra'sında moda ve toplumsal cinsiyet rolleri arasındaki karmaşık bağı incelemektir.

Reclaiming Agency through Fashion: Postcolonial Identities and Colonial Legacies in V.S. Naipaul's A Bend in the River*

    Yalcin, Elif Guvendi

Fashion plays a critical role in human cultures, acting as a canvas for expressing cultural identity, social status, and individual creativity. Its multifaceted nature allows for varied interpretations, much like a complex language. Theorists are increasingly acknowledging this, recognizing how clothing communicates non-verbally, subtly conveying social messages and influencing interactions. This aspect is particularly evident in literature, where characters' clothing choices are deeply connected with their development and contribute significantly to the narrative's emotional richness. Fashion, therefore, extends beyond its aesthetic function, emerging as a dynamic tool for expressing post-colonial identities and challenging the lingering influence of colonialism. In cultures marked by colonial and imperial histories, fashion becomes an emblem of identity, offering a means to reclaim and redefine cultural narratives. It is through fashion choices that individuals express their cultural identity, challenge norms imposed by others, and resist the erasure of their heritage. It becomes a tool for empowerment and self-representation, allowing marginal communities to reclaim agency over their own narratives. While colonialism may have ended, the legacy of colonialism has left lasting impacts on economies, social structures, and cultural perceptions. The Western nations continue actively participating in imperial activities to protect their wealth and power by exploiting other countries economically. The internalization of colonial values has deeply influenced the perception of fashion among people from once colonized countries. The cultural values of these countries are often deemed "uncivilized" in contrast to the "superior," "civilized," and "rational" standards of the colonizers. As a result, Western fashion trends, representative of the colonizers' ideals, permeate the local markets and overshadow indigenous styles. Fashion is used as a means of signifying power, class, and status, and European modes of dress are seen as a symbol of sophistication and modernity. Drawing upon the broader theoretical framework of postcolonialism, this paper critically analyses V.S. Naipaul's work A Bend in the River (1979) to demonstrate how fashion choices create identities to continue colonial legacies.

XIV: Is chivalric love the true love?

Yalçin, Elif Güvendi; Üçele, Hatice Gönül

Romances dates back to the creation of stories. In English history, the romance genre has evolved from the middle aged chivalric romances in between 14th and 15th centuries, to Elizabethan romances in the 16th century, to Gothic romances in the 18th century and the romances of the 19th century. Anthony Giddens's theory of "The Transformation of Intimacy" proposes that romantic love which he sees as the outcome of modernization of Western societies emerges in the late 18th century onwards and is linked with romance as a literature genre. Giddens starts with the appearance of romantic love which is a paragon that is extensively distributed in the 19th century, when marriage starts to get rid of the monetary and kinship ties which have the utmost importance in pre modern societies. In this concept, love which is inconsistent with intimacy and sexuality in pre modern societies is transformed into a confluent love in modern societies with the appearance of more independent and emancipated individuals. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the idea of courtly love within the concepts of gender, sexuality, marriage and rape. Therefore, this paper examines the classic work of Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe (1820). Ivanhoe (1820) is accepted as the classics of both English language- literature and Scottish literature. Although Ivanhoe is not accepted as 'non serious' popular romance novel, it employs the traditional development of the romance story line, which can be summarized as the struggle between good and evil represented in the main male figure and villains, the dangerous journey of the chief character, his specific battle and journey through ritual death as well as his saving the unprotected lady and wedding at the end. The story is set in medieval times and the issue of medievalism is inseparable from the characters' appreciation of love. At that time, there is no place for bodily desires and passion. Thus, the identities of female and male, love- marriage relationships, and the issue of rape reflect the early 19th century ideals which promote the values of chivalry.

Önyargılı Batılı Perspektifinden bir Doğu Şehri: Paul Bowles’in Gözünden İstanbul

    Yalcin, Elif Guvendi

Bu makale Amerikalı yazar olan Paul Bowles’ın İstanbul hakkında 1953'te “A Man Must Not Be Vey Moslem” başlığıyla Their Heads are Greeen and Their Hands are Blue (1957) adlı kitabında kaleme aldığı kısa gezi metnini araştırmayı amaçlamaktadır.

Translating culture: Translation of Ayşe Kulin’s novel Veda: Esir Şehirde Bir Konak as Fairwell: A Mansion in Occupied İstanbul

Yalcin, Elif Guvendi; Dost, Betül Özcan

Cultural studies play an important role in translation studies, which has a nature suitable for interdisciplinary studies. Studies on the translation of cultural elements show the multifaceted nature of translation, increase awareness about culture and help us see the burden on translators. The aim of this study is to reveal the translation strategies used in the translation of cultural elements in Ayşe Kulin’s novel Veda as Farewell: A Mansion in Occupied Istanbul by Kenneth J. Dakan from Turkish into English. Cultural elements in the study are categorized as Ecology; Material Culture; Social Culture; Organizations, Customs, Ideas, Procedures, and Concepts; Gestures and Habits in accordance with Peter Newmark’s categorization of cultural elements. The category of Proverbs and Idioms were also added to the categorization. Three example sentences (except the heading Art) were chosen for each category. These examples were chosen as they represent their categories in the most clear and explanatory way. The translation of the chosen cultural elements were analysed within the framework of the following translation strategies: Literal translation; Translation of Meaning; Use of Cultural Element itself by Adding Explanation or Footnotes; Translation of the Meaning or Function without Translating the Cultural Element itself; Free Translation and Deletion. As a result of the descriptive and comparative analysis, it was found out that the translator did not use one single translation strategy. Instead, he used different translation studies during the translation process and this way overcame the difficulties risen due to cultural elements. Furthermore, the translator also used the strategy of not translating the cultural element, which was not put forth in the beginning of the study. It was also seen that the strategy 3.2 was the most common and the strategies 2.2. and 5.2. were the least common. It was also revealed that the translator did not benefit from the strategy 3.1 at all and sometimes preferred “no translation”, which was not one of the determined strategies in the beginning of the study
