Research two months after the start of the outbreak in Turkey has reached 2163 individuals completed the online platform. The Integrated Anxiety Stress Scale significantly changed according to age, gender, marital status and working status after the pandemic. According to the results of multiple binary logistic regression analysis, individuals aged 50 and over, female gender, being single and not working after the pandemic for anxiety; female gender, being married, and post-pandemic study were found to be risk factors for Covid awareness. It is recommended that epidemic awareness studies and information sharing on controlled healing measures are planned considering the anxiety levels.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Evaluation of moral sensitivity and moral courage in intensive care nurses in Turkey during the COVID-19 pandemic
Goktas, Sonay; Aktug, Cemile; Gezginci, Elif
Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, intensive care nurses may experience ethical issues related to fear of transmission, limited resources, and increased workload. Nurses' moral sensitivity and courage may have a role in dealing with these problems. Aim: The purpose of this study was to assess intensive care nurses' moral sensitivity and moral courage during the COVID-19 pandemic. Design: Descriptive cross-sectional survey. Methods: A total of 362 nurses working in the intensive care units of pandemic hospitals in Turkey participated in the study between January and March 2021. Data were obtained using a personal information form, the Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire, and the Nurses' Moral Courage Scale. A link to the online data collection tools was sent to the management of participating institutions, who forwarded it to nurses. Reporting followed the CHERRIES guidelines. Results: In this study, the response rate of nurses was 89%. The nurses' total mean moral sensitivity score was 90.70 ± 28.89 and their mean moral courage score was 82.08 ± 13.51. A weak inverse correlation was found between the nurses' moral sensitivity and moral courage scores (r = −.176, p =.001). Total moral sensitivity score differed significantly according to years of Intensive care unit (ICU) experience (p =.007). Total moral courage scores increased significantly with education level (p =.012), years of nursing experience (p =.016), and willingness to work in the ICU (p <.001). Conclusion: The study suggests that nurses working in the intensive care unit during the pandemic had moderate moral sensitivity and high levels of moral courage. Nurses' sociodemographic characteristics and ICU work conditions may affect their moral sensitivity and moral courage. Relevance to Clinical Practice: The results of this study can help guide efforts to improve moral courage and sensitivity and address ethical issues among ICU nurses.
- Derleme MakaleAçık Erişim2023“Who am I?” A qualitative meta-synthesis of Chemotherapy‐induced alopecia and body image perception in breast cancer patients
Kocan, Sema; Aktug, Cemile; Gursoy, Ayla
Background: Since alopecia may be the first physical evidence and sign of cancer diagnosis and treatment, it may have a more serious and challenging effect on a woman than the loss of breast tissue. Objective: The purpose of this study was to summarize the current qualitative research which explores the body image perceptions of breast cancer patients with chemotherapy-induced alopecia. Material and methods: We searched three electronic databases and reviewed studies from December 2011 to December 2021 for qualitative results analysing the experiences of women with breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia. The Joanna Briggs Institute critical (JBI) appraisal tool was used to assess the quality of the targeted studies. The Meta-synthesis process developed by Sandelowski and Barroso was used to collect and analyse the data. Results: We discovered two main and five sub-themes from the meta-synthesis findings of 11 qualitative studies involving 225 women. The main themes were “I am not comfortable in this body” and “Who am I?”. The first main theme revealed patients’ intense reactions to their hair loss: “I'm in emotional chaos”, “I am looking for a place to hide” and “I knew it and now I’m experiencing it”.The second main theme of “Who am I?” contained two sub-themes: “What did my hair take from my femininity when it was gone?” and “Will I lose my partner after my hair?”. Conclusion: Meta-synthesis provided an up-to-date and integrated interpretation of scientific results about the experiences of women with breast cancer, alopecia, and their body image perceptions. This interpretation will facilitate a more comprehensive understanding of the alopecia-body image relationship. Thus, the aim of the meta-synthesis results is that these will contribute to nurses’ understanding of how alopecia, although a temporary symptom, affects women's perceptions of body image.
- Derleme MakaleYalnız künye2020When Should Antibiotic Prophylaxis Be Performed to Prevent Surgical Side Infections? A Systematic Review
Gezginci, Elif; Goktas, Sonay; Aktuğ, Cemile
The systematic review was planned to examine the application time of antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent surgical side infections. The keywords, “antibiotic application time”, “antibiotic prophylaxis” and “surgical side infections”, were searched both in Turkish and English in Google Scholar, PUBMED, and EBSCO databases. A total of 5969 studies published between 2009 and 2019 were screened. After the literature review, 5 related studies that met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. Preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis and antibiotic application times were examined. In a study included in the study, it was shown that the risk of developing surgical site infection was reduced in patients who received antibiotics for proclactic purposes 60 minutes before incision line formation. In the remaining four studies, it was stated that prophylactic antibiotherapy applied 30 minutes before surgery minimizes the development of surgical site infection. It was revealed that the application of prophylactic antibiotherapy 30 minutes before the incision line minimizes the risk of infection in the surgical area and the literature should be supported by studies on the time of antibiotic administration.

Doğan, Melike Demir; Aktuğ, Cemile
Aim: Constipation is a common symptom for many patients and constipation assessment scales used by the nurses providing care take a long time to apply. Assessment of constipation is important to improve its management. Therefore, our study aimed to determine the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of The Constipation Assessment Scale. Methods: The Constipation Assessment Scale was translated into Turkish and was administered to a sample of 140 participants after the validation of cultural adaptation. The test–retest method was used to assess the scale’s stability over time. Internal consistency reliability was evaluated with Cronbach’s alpha coefficients. Results: The Constipation Assessment Scale’s structural validity was determined with confirmatory factor analysis and exploratory factor analysis was used to examine dimensionality. The test-retest reliability showed almost perfect agreement, with an ICC of 0.744 (p<0.001) for the total score of the Turkish version of the Constipation Assessment Scale. The internal consistency of the Turkish version of the Constipation Assessment Scale was good (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.784). Conclusion: The linguistic and psychometric evaluation demonstrated the validity of the Turkish version of Constipation Assessment Scale. It is consisting of eight items and providing easy use. So that nurses can assess constipation in less time.
- MakaleYalnız künye2017Nothing is more important than my partner's health: Turkish men's perspectives on partner's appearance after mastectomy and alopecia
Gürsoy, Ayla; Koçan, Sema; Aktuğ, Cemile
Purposes The aim of this study was to acquire a deeper understanding of male experiences on the emotional and social impact of their partners’ mastectomy and chemotherapy-induced alopecia. Methods A purposive sample of 16 males whose partners had undergone mastectomy and alopecia due to chemotherapy was chosen. The data were collected through a semi-structured interview method. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of tape-recorded interviews was employed. Results Two main themes emerged from the data: facing the changes and my wife and I at present. Male partners were affected differently by the change in the physical appearance of their female partners. Our study participants said it was a difficult experience to see their partners for the first time after the surgery, but they emphasized that it was more important that their partners were healthy than the fact that they did not have a breast and hair. They also said they did not know how to behave towards their partners after surgery and/or chemotherapy. Nevertheless, they felt that the disease process of their partners had strengthened their bond and had not negatively influenced their relationship with others. Conclusions The changes in the partners’ physical appearance after mastectomy and chemotherapy affected males differently in psychological, emotional and social terms. Since nurses working in this field are in contact with patients during all phases of treatment and care, it would be positive and beneficial to plan nursing interventions that give emotional support for male partners of patients with breast cancer.
