Demirbağ, Orkun; Kaymak, Halil İbrahim; Alan, Hale; Akdeniz, Ferhan
In today’s dynamic business environment, organizations are increasingly investing in strategies to protect themselves against information system violations. While these technologies offer remarkable benefits—boosting efficiency, productivity, and overall performance—they also bring significant risks, particularly regarding information security breaches. This study delves into the critical connections between technostress, techno-strain, and the violation of information security policies. Our research aims to shed light on how technostress, which is commonly experienced by engineers working in technology-intensive environments within the IT sector, drives information security violations. Importantly, we will also explore how techno-strain mediates this relationship. By focusing on engineers who are consistently engaged with advanced technology, we seek to answer essential questions about their experiences. It is worth noting that the requirements for information security technology can widely vary based on factors such as industry type, organizational structure, departmental roles, and cultural norms. Therefore, this study examines how technostress increases the likelihood of information security policy violations and how techno-strain mediates this relationship. Looking ahead, future research should consider both the broader institutional contexts and the individual characteristics that may shape the relationship between information security violations and technostress. Furthermore, understanding the repercussions of information security violations—stemming from technostress—on a company’s financial health is vital for organizations aiming to safeguard their assets and maintain a competitive edge. Emphasizing these insights can lead to more effective strategies for managing both technology and talent in the workplace.

Pınarbaşı, Işıl Esra; Demirbağ, Orkun; Örs, Şerife
Mine closures are not merely the end of an economic cycle but complex processes that produce long-term social, environmental, and psychosocial consequences. Despite the growing recognition of the importance of Social Impact Assessment (SIA), studies often underemphasize the closure phase and its social repercussions. This study investigates those social impacts in Gümüşhane, Türkiye, a historically mining-dependent region, through the lens of stakeholder theory and a qualitative fieldwork approach. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 21 participants including mine workers, company representatives, public officials, NGOs, media, and local community members, the study identifies significant transformations in six domains: economy, employment and education, land use, demographics, environment and health, and human rights. Findings reveal that mine closures led to income loss, unemployment, migration, weakening of social cohesion, environmental degradation, and violations of labor and participation rights. The exclusion of local stakeholders from closure planning exacerbated distrust and social fragmentation. Providing a nuanced understanding of the social dynamics surrounding mine closure, study contributes to the growing literature calling for more inclusive, just, and sustainable closure processes, and emphasizes the urgency of incorporating SIA as a mandatory and comprehensive practice including not only the opening but also the closure and post-closure stages of mining.

Demirbağ, Orkun; Tiryaki, Selma
This study examines how managers' high performance expectations influence employees' work engagement through their self-efficacy perceptions, and explores the moderating role of job insecurity in this relationship. Within the scope of the study, data were collected between January and March 2024 from two distinct occupational groups private-sector teachers and sales representatives in Trabzon, through an online questionnaire administered using convenience sampling. A total sample of 670 participants was analyzed. Based on the collected data, Hayes Process Model 4 was used to analyze the mediating role of self-efficacy, while Hayes Process Model 7 was employed to examine the moderating role of job insecurity. The results indicated that managers' high performance expectations are positively associated with employees' work engagement, with self-efficacy serving as a mediating variable and job insecurity acting as a moderator in this relationship. The mediating effect of self-efficacy on job engagement was 14.7% for teachers and 47.6% for sales representatives, indicating a meaningful difference across occupational groups.

Demirbağ, Orkun; Örs, Şerife
The COVID-19 pandemic brought significant changes to the education sector, forcing a rapid shift to distance learning that exposed teachers to new challenges, including cyber incivility. This study, grounded in the Conservation of Resources Theory, investigates how mental health problems mediate the relationship between cyber incivility and happiness at work, with gender as a moderating factor. Data were collected from 632 high school teachers in Türkiye, who participated in distance education, using hypothetical scenarios and analysed through the Hayes Process Macro Model 4 and Model 7. The findings reveal that mental health problems significantly mediate the impact of cyber incivility on workplace happiness, with gender moderating this relationship. Specifically, female teachers experienced more mental health issues due to cyber incivility compared to their male counterparts. This research highlights the harmful effects of cyber incivility on teachers’ mental health and provides critical insights for developing policies to address these challenges. The study emphasises the importance of supporting teachers’ well-being amidst the ongoing digitalisation of education. By addressing these issues, the study contributes to a better understanding of the complexities educators face in the evolving digital landscape.

Introduction Drawing on Durkheim's historical theorization of suicide, we extend his concept of anomic suicide, which is suicide due to a lack of social regulation, to introduce the concept of institutional suicide. We define institutional suicide as suicide due to the absence or decline of institutional policies, practices, and discourses for prevention. In this study, we explore the mechanisms for institutional suicides based on suicide notes Turkey, in a context without institutional responsibilization for prevention. Turkey provides a significant context for studying institutional suicides as policies, practices, and discourses for suicide prevention have been declining for some decades. Methods Drawing on publically available suicide notes and narratives in Turkish media outlets, we analyze 17 suicide notes and responses from their institutions of work and friends, family, and colleagues.Findings and Discussion We identify two mechanisms that lead to institutional suicides: (1) dehumanization due to lack of recognition and (2) misrecognition through a devaluation of potential. We extend the theory of anomie to institutional settings and offer social policy suggestions to improve institutional responses based on co-design based on suicide notes to prevent institutional suicides and call for institutional responsibilization for preventing work-related suicides.

Demirbağ, Orkun; Ors, Serife
Based on the transactional stress approach, which predicts that employees' negative stress experiences will occur within the framework of their cognitive evaluations of stressors and in a dynamic process, this study evaluates the effects of role stressors on emotional exhaustion within the framework of an extended effort-reward imbalance model. Within the scope of the study, 705 participants consisting of academic staff, physicians and nurses across Turkey were included in the sample. The study aimed to reveal the moderating effects of overcommitment on the indirect effect of role stressors on emotional exhaustion through effort-reward imbalance. The findings obtained through multiple linear regression analysis show that overcommitment moderates the indirect effect of role stressors on emotional exhaustion through effort-reward imbalance, but contrary to expectations, the indirect effect is weaker at higher levels of overcommitment and stronger at lower levels. It was found that overcommitment acts as a buffer in the relationship between effort-reward imbalance and emotional exhaustion.

Denizli, Umut; Demirbag, Kubra Simsek; Demirbağ, Orkun
Although men still spring to mind when entrepreneurship is mentioned, given that women have been highly successful as entrepreneurs, breaking through glass ceilings and having a solid presence in entrepreneurship, it is crucial to uncover how studies of entrepreneurship have evolved from a gender perspective. Therefore, this study aims to determine the extent of academic interest in women's entrepreneurship and what subtopics are included in related studies. To this end, bibliometric analysis methods were used to evaluate articles published in the field of business and management over the past decade. Included in the analysis were 305 articles published in English in the Social Science Citation Indexed Journals on the Web of Science database and originating from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, the four countries that contribute most to women's entrepreneurship. While most authors contributing to women's entrepreneurship literature are from institutions in the United States, Australian authors are the most collaborative scholars internationally. Moreover, while the literature on women's entrepreneurship was viewed directly from a gender perspective at the beginning of the last decade, it is apparent that subtopics such as risk, entrepreneurial identity, discrimination, and entrepreneurial intention have come into focus over time.
