- MakaleAçık Erişim2026A Comparative Genre Analysis of Turkish Consumer Reviews in Digital Contexts
Demir, Süleyman
This study presents a genre-based comparative analysis of 100 Turkish product reviews collected from Trendyol and 100 book reviews from Kitapyurdu, aiming to uncover the structural, linguistic, and pragmatic features shaping user-generated digital discourse. Drawing on frameworks of move structure analysis and linguistic evaluation, the research investigates how differing communicative purposes, expectations, and platform affordances influence the way users articulate evaluations, express emotions, and offer recommendations. The findings demonstrate that product reviews generally adhere to a concise and function-oriented structure, often comprising an initial evaluation, followed by a reasoning phase that justifies the user’s stance based on personal experience, and concluding with explicit recommendations or appreciation directed toward sellers or future buyers. These reviews are typically characterized by informal and conversational language, spelling and punctuation irregularities, extensive use of intensifiers, as well as extralinguistic aspects such as emojis that visually reinforce affective meanings. Notably, product reviews frequently mention ideas about packaging quality, delivery speed, or the suitability of the product for a specific family member, enhancing their persuasive impact. In contrast, book reviews display an elaborate rhetorical organization. They often begin with detailed descriptions or definitions of the work, reference the author’s broader literary contributions, and provide interpretative evaluations enriched by thematic summaries or selective quotations. The syntactic complexity, careful punctuation, and lexically diverse style of these reviews signal a deeper cognitive and affective engagement with the content. By illustrating how genre conventions and platform contexts jointly shape linguistic and discursive choices, this study underscores the value of genre awareness in fostering critical digital literacy. It also points to pedagogical applications in language teaching and suggests avenues for future research on digital genres across diverse sociocultural settings, media platforms, and interactional modalities.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Corpus-Driven Lexical Profiles of Feminine Words in Turkish: Bayan, Kadın and Karı
Demir, Süleyman
This study aims to examine the semantic and pragmatic features of the three female-referential words “bayan,” “kadın,” and “karı” using a corpus-driven approach. Accordingly, colligations, collocations, semantic preferences, and semantic prosodies of the words were analyzed using concordance lines obtained from the Turkish National Corpus (TNC) with an “extended lexical unit model.” To this end, the concordance lines of each word were subjected to multiple readings, and recurring formal and semantic patterns were classified to determine the semantic relationships between words. The findings show that words have different discursive functions and social representations. The word “bayan” is concentrated in institutional, formal, and neutral contexts; in classificatory and labelling areas of use, while not carrying a distinct emotional prosody. “Kadın,” on the other hand, exhibits a multi-layered pattern of meaning in semantic fields such as emotional evaluation, motherhood/family roles, cultural identities, and political discourse, in addition to physical description; it develops positive and negative prosodies depending on the context. The word “karı,” on the other hand, is used in pejorative, slang, and derogatory contexts; it carries a predominantly negative connotation, producing a distinct negative prosody through insulting adjectives, demeaning comparisons, and masculine possessive discourse. The study demonstrates that female-referenced words are shaped at the level of linguistic choice by gender ideologies, value attributions, and discursive positioning. In this respect, the findings provide important clues for broader sociolinguistic research on how representations of women are constructed.
- MakaleYalnız künye2026Digital cultivation of violence: a mixed-methods analysis of content and sentiment in YouTube comments on popular Turkish TV series
Olgun, Oğuzhan; Demirel, Çağatay; Demirel, Uğur
This study examines the contemporary manifestations of George Gerbner’s Cultivation Theory within the Turkish media landscape by analyzing the relationship between televised representations of violence and digital audience reception. Adopting a mixed-methods research design, the study first conducts a structured qualitative content analysis of 15 selected episodes from three popular Turkish TV series (Camdaki Kız, Sadakatsiz, and Son Yaz) to categorize and quantify various forms of violence. Subsequently, a large-scale computational emotion analysis is performed on 74,478 YouTube comments associated with these episodes using two transformer-based Turkish language models (KUBI and TREMO). The content analysis findings reveal a high prevalence of emotional and psychological violence (61.3%) across all series, followed by physical violence (29.9%), suggesting that mediated harm is increasingly represented through relational and verbal conflict. The computational analysis suggests that these narrative patterns are associated with a high-arousal and largely negative emotional environment in audience discourse, especially around anger and sadness. Notably, while traditional cultivation research emphasizes fear as a primary outcome (Mean World Syndrome), this study finds that digital reception is characterized more by outward-facing anger and moral disgust than by internalized apprehension. The results are consistent with the interpretation that the “seeds” of television cultivation continue to circulate within networked media ecologies, where televised conflict is publicly interpreted and emotionally negotiated through collective digital interaction. By bridging the gap between screen reality and platformed discourse, the research provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the long-term affective impact of Turkish television narratives in the digital age.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Marking Plurality in Turkish and Persian: A Contrastive Morphological Analysis
Demir, Süleyman
The aim of the study is to compare and contrast the pluralisation suffixes in Turkish and Persian, two geographically and culturally neighbouring languages, in order to analyse both the main morphological differences and parallels between the two languages. To this end, the inventory of plural suffixes in Turkish and Persian are methodically identified and analysed with a special focus on their phonological forms, distributional patterns, and syntactic implications. The study shows that, both languages employ several inflectional suffixes to pluralise nouns but, the type and application of these suffixes are quite different. The analysis is conducted in three stages, namely description, juxtaposition and comparison, which is in accordance with the contrastive grammar methodology. The results of this contrastive study show that, the variety of plural forms in Persian is more than those of in Turkish as Persian has irregular or broken plural forms, and this increases the morphological complexity of the language. In contrast, Turkish pluralisation is highly regular and predictable, sticking closely to morphophonemic standards based on consonantal assimilation and vowel harmony. Another distinguishing trait is that Persian establishes a distinction between animate and inanimate nouns in pluralisation, whereas Turkish does not. It is evident that the pluralisation techniques used in these two languages, which share a large word inventory, are constantly different. Persian-speaking Turkish learners may struggle with these variations, particularly when studying rule-based affixation or dealing with irregularity. Based on these findings, the study makes practical recommendations for instructors, second language learners, curriculum planners, translators, and textbook authors working in bilingual or comparative environments
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Transhumanism or Transgression: Altered Bodies in Perdido Street Station
Çapoğlu, Kemal
Being an important example of the New Weird genre, China Miéville’s Perdido Street Station (2000), criticizes transhumanist discourse and presents the ethical issues and unfortunate results of technology in New Crobuzon. This study argues that Miéville questions the optimistic point of view of transhumanism that technology improves human life. The novel also showcases how technology can be used to oppress people by creating inequality, torturing bodies and creating disorder among public. The discussion begins with the remade who are beings forcefully transformed into horrible beings in which flesh and machinery coexist. The modifications of the remade challenges the idea of voluntary enhancement because they function as tools of punishment or exploitation that removes autonomy and honour, thus transforming their bodies so that they can be labourers, entertainers and weapons. The discussion then explores the character Yagharek, the Garuda trying to regain his ability to fly after losing his wings because of a crime. Although Yagharek’s pursuit is compatible with transhumanist notion of morphological freedom, his dependence on New Crobuzon power relations and the ethical ambiguity of his pursuit poses contradiction. Additionally, Isaac’s unintentional release of consciousness-consuming slake-moths when carrying out flight experiments creates concerns about the uncontrolled use of technology. Ultimately, by inserting the remades’ oppression into the Yagharek’s journey, Perdido Street Station interrogates the optimistic claims of transhumanism. Miéville produces a framework of exploitation and ethical ambiguity which prioritizes the fact who controls the technology and who utilizes or suffers from it. This analysis not only not only discusses the novel’s criticism but also reflects the real-world debates on technological advancements, requiring further assessment of humanity’s future

As a corpus-driven study, this research is the result of an inductive examination. The study demonstrated that the lexical framework of the verb "hüzünlen-"implies a sudden, intense sadness often related to past events and circumstances. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the cultural and linguistic features of expressing sadness in Turkish, as well as to comprehending the cognitive aspects of the emotion of sadness. Furthermore, the results of the study offer significant insights into how expressions of sadness are shaped in linguistic and cultural contexts in Turkish, allowing for a broader perspective on the linguistic representation of sadness. This research suggests that the verb "hüzünlen-" should be examined not only in Turkish but also in comparison with similar emotional expressions in other languages. Thus, it can contribute to understanding the universal and culture-specific features of language and emotion.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Türkçe üzüntü eylemi dertlen- ‘in sözcük profili: derlem çıkışlı bir inceleme
- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Investigation of collocational priming in tertiary level Turkish EFL learners’ mental lexicon
Özbay, Ali Şükrü; Aktürk, Ahmet; Cangir, Hakan
Much research in EFL context investigated language use of the learners in terms of lexical combinations but failed to recognize collocations in terms of psycholinguistic framework. Inspired by Lexical Priming Theory, the current study both emphasizes that collocations are not only textual but also psychological phenomena and underlines that non-native-like language use by EFL learners may stem from the fact that collocations are not mentally represented as a single unit in mental lexicon. Thus, a lexical decision task was designed where the participants were asked to classify the words flashing on their screens as words/ non-words. Reaction times concluded that verb-noun collocations are not primed in the learners’ mental lexicon.Mixed effects modelling analysis demonstrated the frequency of the prime words in collocations had a significant effect in the process. The findings were discussed in the light of vocabulary acquisition theories, and suggestions were provided for further research.
