A Video-Based Mobile Palmprint Dataset and an Illumination-Robust Deep Learning Architecture for Unconstrained Environments

Koşmaz Sünnetci, Betül; Bingöl, Özkan; Gedikli, Eyüp; Ekinci, Murat; Doğan, Ramazan Özgür; Türk, Salih; Güngör, Nihan

Featured Application: The proposed framework facilitates secure and user-friendly biometric authentication on mobile platforms, particularly in mobile payment and access control scenarios, under unconstrained conditions. The widespread adoption of mobile devices has made secure and user-friendly biometric authentication critical. However, widely used modalities such as fingerprint and facial recognition show limited robustness under uncontrolled illumination and on heterogeneous devices. In contrast, palmprint recognition offers strong potential because of its rich textural patterns and high discriminative power. This study addresses the limitations of laboratory-based datasets that fail to capture real-world challenges. We introduce MPW-180, a novel dataset comprising videos of 180 participants recorded on their own smartphones in everyday environments. By systematically incorporating diverse illumination conditions (with and without flash) and natural free-hand movements, MPW-180 is the first dataset to adopt a bring-your-own-device paradigm, providing a realistic benchmark for evaluating generalization in mobile biometric models. In addition, we propose PalmWildNet, an SE-block-enhanced deep learning architecture trained with Triplet Loss and a cross-illumination sampling strategy. The experimental results show that conventional methods suffer over 50% performance degradation under cross-illumination conditions. In contrast, our method reduces the Equal Error Rate to 1–2% while maintaining an accuracy above 97%. These findings demonstrate that the proposed framework not only tolerates illumination variability but also learns robust illumination-invariant representations, making it well-suited for mobile biometric authentication.

U–Pb zircon dating, Sr-Nd whole-rock and Lu-Hf zircon isotope analyses of the Eocene Arslandede pluton, Eastern Pontides, NE Turkey: Implications for mantle source and magma evolution

Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Güloğlu, Zikrullah Samet; Aydınçakır, Emre; Yücel, Cem; Vural, Alaaddin; Siebel, Wolfgang; Jeong, Youn-Joong

The Eastern Pontide Orogenic Belt (EPOB) hosts numerous plutonic bodies with different dimensions, compositions and ages ranging from Paleozoic to Late Eocene in NE Turkey. U-Pb zircon dating suggests that the Arslandede pluton crystallized at 44.50 ± 0.29 Ma, corresponding to the Lutetian (Middle Eocene) period. Rocks of this pluton have monzonitic character, with compositions ranging from monzodiorite to granite (SiO2 = 49˗71 wt%). The studied monzonitic rocks have I-type, metaluminous and shoshonitic character and are enriched in large-ion lithophile elements (LILEs). The rare earth elements (REEs) have concave up shape (LaN/YbN = 6.64–11.57) and show negative to slightly positive Eu anomalies (EuN/Eu* = 0.37–1.24). 87Sr/86Sr(i) values of 0.704801–0.705102 and εNd(i) values of 1.01–1.34 correspond to the mantle series on isotope ratio diagrams. Positive εHf(i) values (5.01–14.91) plot between the depleted mantle and the chondritic evolution lines. The petrological features of the rocks from the Arslandede pluton show that fractional crystallization with low rates of assimilation and/or magma mixing were effective during crystallization. All data show that the magma source of the pluton derived from an enriched lithospheric mantle and emplaced into the crust after differentiation in a deep seated magma chamber contaminated by relatively small proportions of crustal rocks.

    Yücel, Hasan; Cengiz, Sevil

Given Türkiye’s high seismic risk, earthquake preparedness is vital. This study explored factors affecting earthquake preparedness behaviors among residents in high-risk areas. The factors affecting earthquake preparedness behaviors Scale based on protection motivation theory was developed, and its validity was tested. Scale development consists of a pilot and main application process. The pilot application was carried out with 50 participants, and the main application was carried out with 804 participants. The sample consisted of 804 participants who were divided into two groups for exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. The sample was selected from 11 neighborhoods using the cluster sampling method. IBM SPSS 25 was used for exploratory factor analysis, while AMOS 24.0 was employed for confirmatory factor analysis. The final version of the scale consists of 24 items across four dimensions, with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.883, exceeding the acceptable threshold of 0.7 for each dimension. The Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin value is 0.898, and Bartlett’s test of sphericity is significant, with the total variance explained being 51%. Confirmatory factor analysis results indicate a good fit for both the measurement and structural models (χ2/df = 1.779; RMSEA = 0.44; CFI = 0.96; NFI = 0.91; TLI = 0.95; p<0.001). Structural equation modeling showed that, among the constructs of protection motivation theory, perceived efficacy (β = 0.690) is the most important factor affecting earthquake preparedness behaviors. The results show that the scale is a valid and reliable tool to determine the factors affecting earthquake preparedness behaviors in Turkish society.

An analysis of factors affecting the market value of airline companies: An application in Borsa, Istanbul

Soydas, Safak Sonmez; Cam, Alper Veli

The market value of firms is mainly affected by financial factors. Financial factors such as sales, profitability, changes in equity, debt structure, competitiveness, interest rates, and inflation affect the market value of firms positively or negatively. Additionally, even if the financial data of firms are investable, some nonfinancial factors can significantly affect the market value of firms. Many nonfinancial factors, such as political and social events, natural disasters, technological developments, government policies, investor confidence or distrust (behavioral finance), managerial changes, sectoral developments, and social media, can change the market value of firms by having a greater impact on their stock prices. Determining the level and timing of the impact of these financial or nonfinancial factors will help institutional or individual investors in their investment decisions. The primary objective of this study is to identify the financial and nonfinancial factors affecting the market value of firms operating in the aviation sector. In this context, the factors affecting the market value of the firms were analyzed using the fundamental analysis data of three firms whose stocks are traded in Borsa Istanbul, one of the emerging markets. In the study, abnormal declines in stock prices of these firms were identified, and the importance levels of the factors that caused them were tried to be revealed. In this direction, a fundamental analysis was performed using financial data obtained from the financial statements of airline companies from the years 2014-2023. The events in the world and Turkey during the relevant periods that affected the capital markets were analyzed and compared. The results of the study are important for both domestic and foreign investors who will invest based on the market value of companies operating in the aviation sector.

A new mathematical model for cellular manufacturing system with productivity consideration

Atmaca, Hatice Ediz; Erdogan Akbulut, Hatice; Aktas, Esra

In today’s environment of escalating competition, companies are adapting their management and production strategies, and product diversity is rapidly increasing. Companies require cellular manufacturing systems to produce products with high diversity in a short amount of time, ensuring the desired quality and meeting customer expectations. Cellular manufacturing systems, which have a more flexible structure compared to traditional production systems, are a good and effective solution for man-agers. Cellular manufacturing is an approach that aims to produce products with varying diversity in the shortest possible time and at the lowest cost, targeting an increase in efficiency. In this study, a cell manufacturing system proposal is made and cell formation is carried out to increase efficiency and effectiveness in a company that manufactures industrial refrigeration cabinets. A productivity-based 0-1 integer mathematical programming model is prepared that facilitates the simultaneous grouping of part and machine families in cell formation. In addition to the intracellular and intercellular transportation costs found in productivity-based models in the literature, labor costs, maintenance costs, the depreciation costs of the machines used in the cells, and the waiting costs of the machines are also added to the prepared model. The model is solved with the help of the GAMS 23.5.1 software package, creating part families and machine groups. Group efficiency values are measured, and the current and proposed situations are compared.

Response of tibia bone morphology, biomechanics and minerals to Organic Hawthorn (Crataegus tanacetifolia) Fruit Vinegar application in broiler chickens exposed to cyclic heat stress

    Kaya, Hacer

This study aimed to determine the effects of adding different doses of organic hawthorn fruit vinegar (HFV) to the drinking water of male broilers (Ross 308) reared under cyclic heat stress (CHS) on tibia bone morphology, biomechanics, and minerals. Broilers were distributed into six groups based on a 2 × 3 factorial design, testing two ambient temperatures (24 and 35°C CHS for 8 h/day starting from day 21) and three HFV levels (0, 2, and 4 ml/L). Cyclic heat stress had no effect on the morphological and biomechanical properties of the tibia bone, except for a decrease in cortex thickness (P < 0.05). However, CHS significantly decreased the bone Ca, P, Mg, Cu, Zn, Mn, and K levels, while increasing the Fe levels (P < 0.01). The addition of 2 and 4 ml/L HFV had no effect on the morphological and biomechanical properties of the tibia bone (P > 0.05), except for an increase in bone diameter with 2 ml/L HFV (P < 0.05). HFV additions were not sufficient to increase the Ca level decreased by CHS, and the tibia bone Ca level of birds under CHS decreased further with HFV additions (P < 0.01). Conversely, 2 ml/L HFV increased Mg levels, and both 2 and 4 ml/L HFV increased Cu, Fe, Zn, and Mn levels, whereas P levels decreased (P < 0.01). K level decreased with 2 ml/L HFV and increased with 4 ml/L HFV supplementation. In conclusion, HFV supplementation has positive effects on bone mineralization in broilers exposed to HS and can be used up to 4 ml/L to mitigate the negative effects of heat stress.

Depth Estimation Based Automatic Pose Correction in Hand Images

Sünnetci Koşmaz, Betül; Bingöl, Özkan; Gedikli, Eyüp; Ekinci, Murat

In palm biometric recognition systems, the hand being at different angles and positions relative to the camera presents a critical challenge in terms of accuracy and reliability. Especially in images captured in free environments, hand misalignment can negatively affect recognition performance by making it difficult to extract biometric attributes. Perspective distortions due to camera position change the geometric structure of the hand, compromising biometric data integrity. While 3D imaging systems can offer successful solutions for pose normalization, performing a similar transformation for 2D images poses a major technical challenge. In this study, depth estimation supported plane fitting is used to remove perspective distortions in 2D images and pose normalization of the hand is obtained. The proposed method uses the information obtained from depth estimation to realign the hand image as if it were standing directly in front of the camera, improving geometric consistency. This will make the extraction of biometric features more reliable and contribute to improving the accuracy of palm recognition systems.

The Effect of Boric Acid on Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, and Apoptosis in Embryonic and Fetal Tissues Damage Caused by Consumption of High-Fructose Corn Syrup in Pregnant Rats

    Başeğmez, Mehmet; Yüksel, Duygu

This study aimed to determine the protective role of boric acid in a pregnant rat model of high fructose corn syrup consumption. Consumption of high fructose corn syrup has been associated with adverse health outcomes in humans and animals. Twenty-eight healthy female Wistar albino rats (250–300 g weight and 16–24 weeks old) were randomly distributed into four equal groups (n = 7): Control, Boric acid (BA), High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), HFCS + BA. Boric acid (20 mg/kg) was administered to pregnant rats via oral gavage every day during pregnancy. The prepared 30% HFCS (F30) solution (24% fructose, 28% dextrose) was added to the drinking water throughout pregnancy. At the end of pregnancy (day 19), blood, placenta, uterus, and fetuses were collected from rats. The results indicated that HFCS increases oxidative stress by increasing the level of MDA and decreasing GSH, SOD, and CAT activity in the blood of maternal. However, BA administration significantly decreased MDA levels and increased GSH levels, SOD, and CAT activity (p < 0.05). In addition, HFCS consumption significantly increased plasma TNF-α, IL-6, and leptin levels compared to control, BA, and HFCS + BA groups (p < 0.05). However, BA administration significantly decreased plasma TNF-α, IL-6, and leptin levels (p < 0.05). Furthermore, BA (20 mg/kg) significantly decreased HFCS-induced histopathological and immunohistochemical alterations in the placenta, uterus, and fetal tissue. In conclusion, BA may prevent HFCS toxicity in maternal and fetal tissues, as it regulates oxidative imbalance in pregnant rat and alleviates histopathological and immunohistochemical changes. The findings indicate a need for further studies to assess the potential of boron in preventing or mitigating the effects of HFCS during pregnancy.

Investigation of Tensile and Fatigue Behavior of Cr/CrN/TiCrN/TiCrCN Multilayer Films Coated on AA6063 and AZ91 Alloys by Closed-Field Unbalanced Magnetron Sputtering Process

Yeşildal, Ruhi; Sezer, Sadberk; Karabudak, Filiz

Despite the widespread use of Mg and Al alloys among light metals in the automobile and aviation industries, they have low tensile and fatigue strength. Therefore, in the present work, AZ91 Mg and AA6063 Al alloys were coated with a multilayer transition metal nitride film (Cr/CrN/TiCrN/TiCrCN) to increase fatigue and tensile strength. Films with Cr/CrN/TiCrN/TiCrCN microstructure architecture were synthesized on the surfaces of AZ91 Mg and AA6063 Al alloys using the CFUBMS (closed-field unbalanced magnetron sputtering) system, one of the PVD (physical vapor deposition) techniques. Films’ structural properties were analyzed by XRD, SEM, and EDAX, whereas mechanical properties were investigated using tensile and rotary bending fatigue testing machines. According to the SEM examination, the Cr, CrN, TiCrN, and TiCrCN multilayer nitride films on the two alloys have a columnar and dense microstructure. The XRD analysis detected Cr (211), CrN (111) and (200), TiN (111), (200) and (222), and TiCN (200) and (311) diffraction peaks. The Cr/CrN/TiCrN/TiCrCN multilayer coating increased the fatigue limit value of AZ91 by 11.22% from 70.26 MPa to 78.15 MPa. The fatigue limit value of AA6063 decreased by 9.79% from 79.71 MPa to 71.9 MPa. After coating, the tensile strength value of AZ91 increased from 137.89 MPa to 139.65 MPa, while the tensile strength of AA6063 decreased from 129.35 MPa to 118.16 MPa.

    A hybrid method to solve a fractional-order Newell–Whitehead–Segel equation

    Bektaş, Umut; Anaç, Halil

This paper solves fractional differential equations using the Shehu transform in combination with the q-homotopy analysis transform method (q-HATM). As the Shehu transform is only applicable to linear equations, q-HATM is an efficient technique for approximating solutions to nonlinear differential equations. In nonlinear systems that explain the emergence of stripes in 2D systems, the Newell–Whitehead–Segel equation plays a significant role. The findings indicate that the outcomes derived from the tables yield superior results compared to the existing LTDM in the literature. Maple is utilized to depict three-dimensional surfaces and find numerical values that are displayed in a table.

The Stranger at Home: Lived Experiences of Online Gambling Within the Family in Siirt, Türkiye

Bektaş, Ahmet; Toprak, Adnan; Solmaz, Mustafa; Solmaz, Fatih; Erbaş, Sefa; İliter, Seyfettin; Parlar, Yasin

Online gambling is a growing public health concern whose harms extend to the family, yet its familial consequences remain underexplored in contexts where gambling is illegal and extended-family ties are strong. This study examined how men who gamble online perceive gambling to affect their families in Siirt, Türkiye. Using a qualitative exploratory design, in-person semi-structured interviews with nine married or previously married men who currently or formerly gambled online (recruited via purposive and snowball sampling) were analyzed with a hybrid deductive-inductive, codebook thematic analysis (Fereday & Muir-Cochrane, 2006), informed by the six phases of Braun and Clarke (2006). Four themes were identified: entry into online gambling and the experience of addiction; the internal disintegration of the nuclear family; the household’s economic collapse and drift into crime; and the extended family, stigmatization, and the cultural framing of harm. Participants perceived gambling to erode communication and trust, dispossess the household, and displace men from the provider role, while family responses followed conventional gendered lines-disrupting the material division of roles while reactivating a traditional gender order. Distinctive contextual mechanisms emerged, including the extended family’s collective debt-clearing in exchange for religious oaths and the operation of stigma through kinship networks that threatened collective family honor. Because all participants were gamblers, the findings reflect their perceptions of family impact rather than the direct experiences of affected others. The results extend a predominantly Western evidence base and underscore the need for culturally sensitive, family-inclusive support that works with existing kinship structures while protecting those most burdened.

Potential of bee products for enrichment of herbal tea: using response surface methodology

Ilyasoğlu, Huri; Arpa Zemzemoğlu, Tuba Eda; Arslan Burnaz, Nesibe

Purpose: There has been an increasing demand for food and beverage products enriched with bee products due to their valuable nutrients and bioactive compounds. This study was designed to assess the feasibility of enriching herbal tea infusions with bee products (honey and bee pollen), and to optimize formulation parameters using response surface methodology (RSM). Methods: The effects of the honey level of bee products (HLBP; 10–90 g/100 g) and the level of non-tea substances (LNTS; 1–5 g/100 mL) on the general acceptability, total glucose and fructose (TGF), total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant activity of the herbal tea infusions were investigated using RSM. Results: HLBP showed a positive impact on the general acceptability and TGF, but a negative impact on the TPC, while the LNTS had a positive impact on the TGF and TPC. At the optimized enrichment conditions, the response to honey–bee pollen differed markedly between the two matrices: linden tea demonstrated significantly higher functional enhancement (TPC, TFC, and antioxidant activity) compared to the control, whereas sage tea exhibited relatively stable functional values. Sensory responses also differed, with linden formulations showing a significant decrease in general acceptability at lower HLBP levels, while sage formulations maintained relatively stable sensory scores. Conclusion: Overall, the findings indicate that the effects of honey–bee pollen enrichment on herbal tea beverages depend on the tea matrix and require optimization, as increasing functional properties may compromise sensory acceptability, particularly in linden tea, whereas sage tea showed comparatively similar responses to the control.

A hierarchical metaheuristic framework for CPT-based soil liquefaction prediction with Kolmogorov–Arnold Network variants

Günen, Mehmet Akif; Öztürk, Kaşif Furkan

Soil liquefaction is a critical geotechnical hazard that threatens the safety of civil infrastructure under seismic loading, necessitating robust and interpretable prediction models. This study proposes a hierarchical framework for CPT-based soil liquefaction prediction using meta-heuristic-optimized Kolmogorov–Arnold Network (KAN) variants. The framework follows a two-stage optimization strategy. First, six state-of-the-art meta-heuristic algorithms are statistically compared to identify the most effective optimization method. Second, the selected algorithm is employed to optimize six KAN variants, including FastKAN, EfficientKAN, FourierKAN, ChebyKAN, JacobiRKAN, and PadéRKAN. Statistical comparisons based on the Wilcoxon signed-rank test demonstrate that the Colony-Based Search algorithm (CSA) achieves lower objective-function values than the competing meta-heuristics (p<0.01) and is therefore adopted as the core optimization strategy. Performance evaluation reveals that the CSA-optimized ChebyKAN model achieves the highest predictive accuracy, with an F1 Score of 0.8875 ± 0.011 and an AUC of 0.9115 ± 0.013. Pairwise McNemar tests detected no statistically significant difference in classification decisions for any evaluated model pair (p>0.01). SHapley Additive exPlanations analysis identified qc, qc1N, and amax as the variables with the largest model-specific attributions, whereas d, c, and σv received lower attributions. A cost-sensitive error analysis further showed that ChebyKAN produced the lowest false-negative rate and the lowest asymmetric error cost under 5:1 and 10:1 false-negative-to-false-positive cost scenarios, supporting its conservative behaviour for safety-critical liquefaction screening. The results establish the proposed CSA–KAN framework as a reliable, high-accuracy, and interpretable solution for CPT-based soil liquefaction assessment in geotechnical engineering practice.

A novel neutrosophic estimation method for handling uncertainty in population mean estimation

Yadav, Akhilesh; Yadav, Dharmendra Kumar; Yadav, Subhash Kumar; Zaman, Tolga

Estimating the population mean using auxiliary information has been extensively explored within the classical framework. While point estimators offer simplicity, they provide only a single value without reflecting the uncertainty or variability inherent in real-world data. This shortcoming is particularly critical in high-precision applications and decision-making contexts. Moreover, classical estimators are often vulnerable to the influence of outliers, which can distort results and introduce significant bias. To address these limitations, this study introduces a novel estimator grounded in neutrosophic theory, which is specifically designed to handle imprecise, vague, and incomplete information-conditions frequently encountered in practical sampling scenarios. The proposed neutrosophic estimator incorporates auxiliary information expressed in neutrosophic terms, offering a more flexible and resilient estimation strategy. We derive expressions for the bias and mean square error of the proposed estimator under a first-order approximation. A comprehensive theoretical analysis, supported by simulation studies, confirms that the neutrosophic estimator consistently outperforms classical estimators in terms of accuracy and robustness, especially in uncertain environments. These findings underscore the potential of neutrosophic approaches as powerful alternatives to conventional estimation techniques in modern statistical inference.
