- MakaleAçık Erişim2013Scopus SJRQ2Development of a new solid phase extraction procedure for selective separation and enrichment of Au(III) ions in environmental samples
Elvan, Hamide; Ozdes, Duygu; Duran, Celal; Bulut, V. Numan; Gümrükçüoglu, Nurhan; Soylak, Mustafa
A highly sensitive, selective and low cost solid phase extraction (SPE) procedure was developed for separation and enrichment of Au(III) ions in environmental samples prior to its flame atomic absorption spectrometric detection. Au(III)-2-pyridin-5-(4-tolyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PYTOX) complex was adsorbed quantitatively on Amberlite XAD-4 resin in 0.5 mol L-1 HNO3 condition and the elution was carried out with 7.5 mL of 1.0 mol L-1 HCl in acetone. Some analytical parameters, affect the recoveries of Au(III) ions, such as HNO3 concentration of sample solution, amount of PYTOX, type, concentration and volume of eluent, sample volume and concomitants were examined. Adopting optimized experimental conditions, the limit of detection for Au(III) ions was 1.03 μg L-1 with preconcentration factor of 50 and a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 3.7%. The determination of Au(III) ions in anodic slime, gold ore, soil and sea and stream waters was performed after checking the accuracy of the method by addition-recovery tests.

Kanik, Mustafa; Gurocak, Zulfu; Alemdag, Selcuk
The aim of this study is to highlight the importance of the numerical approach in realistic support design for tunneling. The Macka Tunnel, which is planned to be constructed between the Trabzon-Gumushane highways, located in the Northeastern Turkey, was selected for a field study. The lithology of the study area consists of Late Cretaceous-aged sedimentary rocks, known as the Catak and Esiroglu formations, and the Late Cretaceous-aged Kackar Rhyodacite. In order to determine the geotechnical properties of rock masses and intact rocks, field and laboratory studies were carried out.The rock masses were classified in terms of the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) using the versions of RMR89 and RMR14 and then the preliminary support systems for the tunnel were determined, accordingly. The support systems obtained from the RMR versions were analyzed using the finite element method (FEM). The maximum total displacement and the maximum thickness of plastic zone occurred around the Macka Tunnel after installation the support systems suggested by the RMR89 and RMR14 versions were compared to determine which the RMR version suggests more realistic support system. The results showed that the support systems obtained from the RMR14 version suggests more realistic support element for fair rock masses and great horizontal stress values.

Karaca, Zeki; Türkeli, Erdem; Günaydin, Murat; Adanur, Süleyman
Industrial reinforced concrete (RC) chimneys are tall and slender structures that need repair and strengthening in their service lives. Fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs) are continuously becoming a popular material that is used for strengthening purposes of RC structures. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of FRP strengthening on dynamic responses of industrial RC chimneys. A 75-m-high industrial RC chimney with an opening on the body was selected for FRP strengthening. First, three-dimensional finite element model of the chimney and its modal analyses were performed in ANSYS software. Then, linear transient analyses of the chimney were carried out by using 1992 Erzincan Earthquake ground motion record. After that, body of chimney was strengthened with FRP composite, and dynamic analyses were performed. Finally, dynamic responses of chimney before and after FRP strengthening, such as displacements and maximum-minimum principal stresses, were compared. At the end of the study, it was seen that displacements increased along the height of the chimney, maximum and minimum principal stresses occurred at the region of opening and base for all analysis, respectively. Also, it was seen from this study that FRP strengthening is effective on the dynamic response of industrial RC chimneys.

Bahar, Bilge; Yildirim, Mehmet
Some spring bread wheat genotypes were evaluated for drought resistance using drought tolerance efficiency (DTE) and drought susceptibility index (DSI) under rainfed conditions in this study. Field trials were conducted in the Research Area of Field Crops Department, Agricultural Faculty, Cukurova University during 2002 - 2003 with high rainfall and 2003 - 2004 with low rainfall growth seasons. High variations were observed for drought resistance parameters both DTE and DSI in this study. While DTE values ranged from 65 - 98%, DSI values changed 0.077 - 1.761. The genotypes with high DTE and low DSI were evaluated as drought resistant; meanwhile, genotypes with low DTE and high DSI were considered as drought susceptible. Thus, genotypes Croc 1/Aegilops squarrosa, Genc 99, Weawer/WL 3926, Oasis/Kauz//*4 Bcn, and Punjab 96 with the lowest DSI and the highest DTE values were accepted drought resistant genotypes which may be used as the genetic sources for drought resistance.

- MakaleYalnız künye2010Scopus SJRQ3Wall traverse with GPSSIT and 3D positioning of urban details
Corumluoglu, Ozsen
In an urban environment, sometimes surveying becomes a very hard task, especially measuring some certain points or details on the ground that are surrounded by obstacles such as trees, fences or buildings. On the other hand, in such areas, survey points installed as references on the ground can easily be lost because of city activities. Wall traverse supported by GPSSIT (GPS Sanal Istasyon Teknigi - GPS Virtual Point Technique) and relying on freely chosen Sanal Istasyon Noktalari (SINs) or - virtual points (VIPs) without worrying about installing any control point on the ground provide a reliable resolution. In this study, establishment of wall traverse points by the support of GPSSIT and TS (GPSSIT and total station) and a detail measurement technique with 3D coordinates using these wall points were introduced and applied in a sample area. As a conclusion, standard deviations were found as mp = ± 4.53 cm and mH = ± 3.85 cm in position and height respectively for details.

- MakaleYalnız künye2013Scopus SJRQ2Decaying source model: Alternative approach to determination of true counting rates at X and gamma ray counting systems
Karabidak, S.M.; Cevik, U.
The counting systems consisting of electronic devices are used for detection of radiation due to X or gamma rays. The dead time of the counting system is based on time limitations of these electronic devices. The dead time causes counting losses. Determination of counting rate losses in quantitative and qualitative analysis become a vital step for correction of analysis. Therefore, compensating for counting rate losses is of great importance. These counting rate losses are due to piled up reject time, paralyzable or non-paralyzable system dead time or a combination of these mechanisms. Paralyzable and non-paralyzable models are well-known and frequently used for correction of counting rate losses dependent on the system dead time. However, these two models do not provide enough correction at medium and high counting rates. Therefore, the new models for corrections of counting rate losses are needed. For this reason, both an alternative approach is proposed and a simulation program is coded for counting rate losses in this study. A good agreement is obtained between theoretical model and simulation program.

- MakaleYalnız künye2014Scopus SJRQ1Response Surface Methodology Study for Optimization of Effects of Fiber Level, Frying Temperature, and Frying Time on Some Physicochemical, Textural, and Sensory Properties of Wheat Chips Enriched with Apple Fiber
Kayacier, Ahmed; Yüksel, Ferhat; Karaman, Safa
In this study, wheat chips enriched with apple fiber were produced, and response surface methodology was used for the determination of the simultaneous effects of processing variables selected as fiber level (0-15 %), frying temperature (160-180 °C), and frying time (40-60 s) on some physicochemical, textural, and sensorial properties of chips. Ridge analysis was conducted to determine the optimum levels of processing variables. Predictive regression equations with high coefficient of determination (R 2 ≥ 0.728) were constructed. Addition of apple fiber increased the dry matter; ash content; L, a, and b values of samples, while increase of frying temperature caused decrease of the hardness values. Overall acceptability of chips enriched with apple fiber decreased with the increase of frying temperature, but wheat chips enriched with apple fiber and fried at low temperatures received highest sensory score. Ridge analysis showed that maximum taste score would be attained at fiber level = 15 %, frying temperature = 170 °C and frying time = 40 s.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2015Scopus SJRQ1Increased expressions of ADAMTS-13, neuronal nitric oxide synthase, and neurofilament correlate with severity of neuropathology in border disease virus-infected small ruminants
Dincel, Gungor Cagdas; Kul, Oguz
Border Disease (BD), caused by Pestivirus from the family Flaviviridae, leads to serious reproductive losses and brain anomalies such as hydranencephaly and cerebellar hypoplasia in aborted fetuses and neonatal lambs. In this report it is aimed to investigate the expression of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), A Disintegrin And Metalloprotease with Throm-bospondin type I repeats-13 (ADAMTS-13), and neurofilament (NF) in the brain tissue in small ruminants infected with Border Disease Virus (BDV) and to identify any correlation between hypomyelinogenesis and BD neuropathology. Results of the study revealed that the levels of ADAMTS-13 (p<0.05), nNOS (p<0.05), and NF (p<0.05) were remarkably higher in BDV-infected brain tissue than in the uninfected control. It was suggested that L-arginine-NO synthase pathway is activated after infection by BDV and that the expression of NF and nNOS is associated with the severity of BD. A few studies have focused on ADAMTS-13 expression in the central nervous system, and its function continues to remain unclear. The most prominent finding from our study was that ADAMTS-13, which contain two CUB domains, has two CUB domains and its high expression levels are probably associated with the development of the central nervous system (CNS). The results also clearly indicate that the interaction of ADAMTS-13 and NO may play an important role in the regulation and protection of the CNS microenvironment in neurodegenerative diseases. In addition, NF expression might indicate the progress of the disease. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first report on ADAMTS-13 expression in the CNS of BDV-infected small ruminants.

Tanriverdi, Ebru Sandal; Özcan, Mehmet Musa; Juhaimi, Fahad Al
In this study, peppers and potatoes were fried in olive and peanut oils. In order to evaluate the oxidative stability of frying oils, essential oils of sage, rosemary, thyme at the concentration of 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 and 1.2 %, separately and 0.01 % butylated hydroxytoluene were added into olive and peanut oils. Chemical properties of frying oils (free fatty acid %, peroxide value, DPPH, total phenolic and fatty acid composition) were determined after frying. Butylated hydroxytoluene showed the best effect on free fatty acid % and peroxide value of olive oils after frying of peppers and potatoes. Free fatty acid % values of frying oils of peppers and potatoes showed variation. The nearest values of oleic, linoleic and linolenic acid contents of frying olive oils of peppers and potatoes were determined with sample addition of butylated hydroxytoluene. Oleic, linoleic and linolenic acid contents of peanut oil with butylated hydroxytoluene and potato frying oil that addition of 0.3 % rosemary essential oil were determined to nearly the initial value of oil. These essential oils were also determined to show high radical scavenging effect. Rosemary essential oil was determined higher the radical scavenging effect and lower total phenolic compounds than thyme essential oils. There were not exact a relationship between radical scavenging effect and the amount of total phenolic compounds. The aim of current study is to establish to the effect of some spice essential oils on the stability of frying oils.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2012Scopus SJRQ1Construction stage analysis of Humber Suspension Bridge
Adanur, Süleyman; Günaydin, Murat; Altunişik, Ahmet Can; Sevim, Bariş
Suspension bridges are widely used as engineering structures to across long spans and give rise to the usage of domains under the bridge. In the finite element analyses of suspension bridges, it is assumed that the structure is built and loaded in a second. However, this type of analysis does not always give the reliable and healthy solutions. Because, construction period of this type of the structures continue along time and loads may be changed during this period. Therefore, construction stages and time dependent material properties should be considered in the analysis to obtain the reliable and healthy results. This paper presents the construction stage analysis of suspension bridges using time dependent material properties. For this purpose, Humber Suspension Bridge built near Kingston upon Hull, England is chosen as an example. Finite element model of the bridge is constituted using SAP2000 program considering project drawings. Geometric nonlinearities are taken into consideration in the analysis using P-Delta large displacement criterion. The time dependent material strength of steel and concrete and geometric variations are included in the analysis. Time dependent material properties are considered as compressive strength, aging, shrinkage and creep for concrete, and relaxation for steel. The structural response of the bridge at different construction stages has been examined. Two different finite element analyses with and without construction stages are carried out and results are compared with each other. As analyses result, variation of the displacement and internal forces such as bending moment, axial forces and shear forces for bridge deck and towers are given with detail. It can be seen from the study that there are some differences between both analyses (with and without construction stages) and the results obtained from the construction stages are bigger. So, it is thought that construction stage analysis using time dependent material properties and geometric nonlinearity should be considered in order to obtain more realistic structural response of suspension bridges.

İncele - MakaleYalnız künye2010Scopus SJRQ3The effects of seeding patterns, nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizations on production and botanical composition in lucerne-smooth bromegrass mixtures
Yolcu, H.; Serin, Y.; Tan, M.
Lucerne and smooth bromegrass are commonly cultivated in irrigated and dry lands in intercropping systems in the world. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of seeding patterns (mixed, alternative and cross-seeding patterns), nitrogen (0, 60, and 120 kg N ha-1) and phosphorus fertilizer (0, 40, 80 and 120 kg P2O5 ha-1) rates on dry matter yields, botanical composition and crude protein yield of lucerne-smooth bromegrass mixture in an intercropping system. The experiment was established in 2001 and data were collected in dry matter yield and legume ratio for four years (2002-2005) and in crude protein yield for two years (2002-2003). The results showed that the highest dry matter yield was produced by a alternative seeding pattern. However, the highest legume ratio and crude protein yield was produced by mixtures sown in cross seeding pattern. Nitrogen fertilizer application decreased legume ratio but increased crude protein yield. Phosphorus fertilizer application had no effect on dry matter yield, legume ratio or crude protein yield of the lucerne-smooth bromegrass mixtures.

Çavdar, Ahmet; Yetgin, Şükrü
The durability can be described as concrete's resistance to the destructive influences of a medium containing acid, sulfate and/or various chemicals and mechanical effects. The main objective of this study is investigation of mechanical and mineralogical properties of cement mortar with different pozzolanic compositions and subjected to sulfated medium. In the study, the mortars produced with cement samples having seven different compositions and varied with an air-entraining agent were subjected to the influence of sulfate. This study is supported by thin section and X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) investigations, in addition to being subjected to the basic tests, such as compression and flexure. The most important findings obtained from the study are that the compact structure has more effective properties against sulfate effects for cement mortars than pozzolanic materials' effects and the highest pozzolanic material ratio is restricted about 25-30% by mass because this ratio is a boundary of mechanical properties.

- MakaleYalnız künye2011Scopus SJRQ1Assessment of nonlinear seismic performance of a restored historical arch bridge using ambient vibrations
Sevim, Bariş; Bayraktar, Alemdar; Altunişik, Ahmet Can; Atamtürktür, Sezer; Birinci, Fatma
Historic masonry arch bridges are vital components of transportation systems in many countries worldwide, ensuring the ready access of goods and services to millions of people. The structural failure of these historic structures would severely and adversely impact the economies of these nations due to the massive disruptions of transportation systems accompanying such failures. To successfully maintain these aging masonry structures, performance assessment must incorporate the unique mechanical characteristics of masonry. Therefore, the preferred analysis technique must go beyond a linear approach. This study assesses the earthquake performance of a restored historical masonry arch bridge through nonlinear finite element analysis incorporating the Drucker-Prager damage criterion. The case study structure is the Mikron Arch Bridge, a nineteenth century Ottoman Era structure built over the Firtina River near Rize, Turkey, and restored in 1998. The Mikron Arch Bridge was first subjected to ambient vibration testing, during which accelerometers were placed at several points on the bridge span to record the bridge vibratory response. The investigators then used Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition and Stochastic Subspace Identification techniques to extract the experimental natural frequencies, mode shapes, and damping ratios from these measurements. Experimental results were compared with those obtained by the linear finite element analysis of the bridge. Good agreement between mode shapes was observed during this comparison, though natural frequencies disagree by 8-10%. The boundary conditions of the linear finite element model of Mikron Arch Bridge are adjusted such that the analytical predictions agree with the ambient vibration test results. By introducing the Drucker-Prager damage criterion, the calibrated linear FE model was next extended into a nonlinear model. Nonlinear analysis of seismic behavior of Mikron arch bridge was performed considering the acceleration record of Erzincan earthquake in 1992 that occurred near the Mikron Bridge region. The displacement and stress results were observed to be allowable level of the stone material. Moreover, linear FE model calibrations elicited a significant influence on the nonlinear FE model simulations.
