Aim: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic, degenerative joint disease that is characterised by joint pain and stiffness. The development of kinesiophobia is common in OA patients, especially related to pain and loss of function. The aim of our study was to determine the relationship between kinesiophobia and pain, quality of life and physical functions in patients with knee OA. Material and Method: A total of 60 patients (30 females and 30 males, aged 40-65 years) diagnosed with Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grade 2 and 3 OA participated in this cross-sectional study. Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK), Short Form Health Survey (SF-12), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score Physical Function Short Form (KOOS-PS), Oxford Knee Score (OKS), Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), Berg Balance Scale (BBS) scales and Timed Up and Go (TUG), 6-Minute Walking Test (6MWT), The Five Repetition Sit to Stand Test (5STS) and Stair-Climbing Test (SCT) functional tests were performed. Results: A statistically significant difference was observed between the male and female groups in all scales and functional test results, with the exception of TSK (p<0.05). A positive correlation was found between kinesiophobia and SCT in the female group, while a negative correlation was found between TUG and SF-12 PCS in the male group (p<0.05). Conclusion: The findings indicated that, in general, kinesiophobia was not significantly correlated with pain, knee score, balance, quality of life and functional tests in male and female OA patients. However, some scales and tests showed positive and negative correlations with kinesiophobia in both groups, although limited.

Pain, quality of life, proprioception and physical function in patient with knee osteoarthritis: Comparison of different grades

Yilmaz, Ali Kerim; Kehribar, Lokman; Yılmaz, Coşkun; Genç, Ahmet Serhat; Akdemir, Enes; Anıl, Berna; Yoldaş, Burak; Korkmaz, Esra; Kumru, Dilara; Ermis, Egemen

This study aimed to determine the differences in pain, quality of life and functional status of individuals with Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) between grades. The study included 90 patients with different grades (Grades 1, 2, and 3) of KOA. The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score-Physical Function Shortform (KOOS-PS), Short Form Health (SF-12), Oxford Knee Score (OKS) and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scales were applied. Timed Up and Go test (TUG), Five Times Sit to Stand Test (5STS), Stair Climb Test (SCT), 6-minute Walking Test (6MWT) and proprioception measurements were performed for functional assessments. Foot Posture Index (FPI-6), Navicular Drop Test (NDT) and Foot Function Index (FFI) tests were used for foot posture evaluations. In the functional tests performed in the study, a significant decrease in test performance was observed in the 6MWT and SCT tests as the grade level increased (P<0.05). In TUG and 5STS tests, a significant decrease in performance was detected only in Grade 3 compared to other grades (P<0.05). Similarly, there were significant differences between the grades in all scales applied (P<0.05). In proprioception evaluations, similar medians were found between sides (P>0.05). In FFI averages, significant differences were found especially in pain (P=0.036) and insufficiency (P=0.008) parameters compared to grade 3. This study revealed noticeable differences in knee scores, pain, quality of life scales and functional tests at different stages of KOA. These differences were generally negative as grade levels increased. However, consistent with previous research, conflicting results were identified, emphasizing the need for a nuanced understanding of KOA.

The investigation of the patients who apply with the cause of chronic low back pain to the chiropractic clinic

Arslan, Mesut; Saral, İlknur; Donat, Ali

In this cross-sectional study, it was planned to examine the relationship between age, gender, daily life activity habits, clinical examination findings and treatment sessions number of the patients with chronic low back pain who applied for chiropractic treatment. After examination of the patient files, who were treated at Private Clinic between January 2010 and December 2017, 408 patients’ data were accepted into study. Patients; demographic characteristics, physical examination findings and imaging results were examined. Age, gender, sedentary time (sitting), activity level, stress level, pain duration, spinal dysfunction segments and treatment number were included. Patients’ mean age was 43.1 ± 12.6 years, 205 were male (50.2%) and 203 (49.8%) were female. When the total number of received treatment sessions were examined, the average for all patients was 3.5±2.9. The number of treatments were significantly higher in the groups with pain duration of 6-10 years and 11 years and above, compared to the group with 0-5 years of pain (p = 0.009). There was a significant difference between the patients' pain duration and number of treatment sessions. However, there was no significant difference in age, gender, daily life activity habits, clinical examination findings and number of treatment sessions in our study.
