- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Determination of Antioxidant Capacities of Extracts of Sorbus subfusca (ledeb. ex. nordm.) boiss
Kocabaş, Selahattin; Topal, Fevzi
Sorbus subfusca (ledeb. ex. nordm.) boiss. (Sorbus subfusca) belongs to the Rosacese family. It is commonly referred to as highland rowan. It is an endemic species found only in the eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey and in a few countries on the Asian Continent. Both water (WESS) and ethyl alcohol (EESS) lyophilized forms were used as extracts. Different reducing capacity methods and radical scavenging activity methods were used to study the antioxidant activities of the extracts. Total phenolic compounds were calculated as 43.5 (WESS) and 43.0 (EESS) µg GAE/mg extract. This value is an indication that it can take place in plants with high phenolic content. Peroxidation inhibition percentages of linoleic acid emulsion at 20 µg mL-1 concentration for WESS and EESS; WESS was calculated as 70.93% and EESS as 82.63%. The high antioxidant capacity of Sorbus subfusca, an endemic species, brings up the preference of natural products as antioxidants. It is thought that these studies will draw a new path to the literature, especially alternative medicine and pharmacological studies.

İncele - MakaleYalnız künye2022Scopus SJRQ2Chemical profile, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and enzyme inhibition activities of Pilosella hoppeana subsp. cilicica
Acet, Tuba
Pilosella hoppeana subsp. cilicica has been traditionally used for healing many diseases in folk medicine in Anatolia. However, there are, to date, no studies aimed to verify this local usage with scientific data. In the present study, phenolic content and biological activities such as the antioxidant, antimicrobial and enzyme inhibition activities of different extracts of this plant’s aerial part were investigated for the first time. According to the obtained data, the biological activity of methanol extract was found to be significantly higher than the others. Moreover, the major components detected were chlorogenic acid (61.79 mg g−1 extract), apigenin (2.727 mg g−1 extract), and luteolin (1.110 mg g−1 extract) in this extract. This extract showed a strong enzyme inhibitory activity including α-amylase (96.66 mmol ACAE g−1 extract), α-glucosidase (17.27 mmol ACAE g−1 extract), AChE (10.42 mg GALE g−1 extract), and BChE (102.35 mg GALE g−1 extract). On the other hand, the extract exhibited remarkable antimicrobial effect on Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, and Staphylococcus epidermidis (64 µg/mL MIC value); intermediate (128–256 µg/mL MIC value) antimicrobial activity on Proteus vulgaris, Listeria innocua, and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium. To sum up, it is clearly seen that Pilosella hoppeana subsp. cilicica has significant potential as a source of bioactive compounds in pharmaceutical industries.

Commercial blueberry production has been a viable industry throughout the world for 95 years; because of blueberry is a good source of antioxidant. Blueberries are especially rich in anthocyanin, a flavonoid with potent antioxidant capacity. The aim of this study was to compare the phenolic quantities, antioxidant activities, anthocyanin, sugar and phenolic compounds of blueberries produced in Turkey with those of similar blueberry varieties produced around the world. As a result of the conducted analysis, the total phenolic content (TPC) amount found in the berries was 77.26-215.12 mg GAE/100 g, the total flavonoid content (TFC) was 30.44-91.69 mg QE/100 g and the total anthocyanin content (TAC) was 43.03-295.06 mg c3- GE/100 g. Examining the antioxidant activities of the berries, DPPH between 1.10-5.65 mg/ml, FRAP between 454.93- 36832.96 μmol troloks/100 g, β-Carotene between 40.66-86.48%. It was determined that the natural berries contained much more phenolic compounds and higher antioxidant activity than that of the cultivars The result of HPLC analysis, chlorogenic acid is determined to be the dominant compound in all berries. Furthermore, fructose and glucose are found in all fruits in different quantities while sucrose is found in certain varieties of berries as well. At the end of the performed study the data indicate that wild and cultivars of blueberries are rich sources of antioxidants for local as well international industries importing this fruit for food processing and enormous products.

- MakaleYalnız künye2017Chemical composition and bioactive properties of the essential oil of Rhinanthus angustifolius subsp grandiflorus
Kaya, A. A.; Üçüncü, O.; Ilter, S. M.; Baltaci, C.; Öztürk, S.
In this study, the chemical composition and antimicrobial activities of the essential oil of the Rhinanthus angustifolius subsp. grandiflorus plant were investigated. Essential oil was obtained from all parts of the plant by hydrodistillation and was analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. 31 components representing 99.46% of the total oils were characterized. The main components of these species were found to be 2,3-dihydro-5-methyl-1H-indene (25.14%), alpha-cubebene (19.27%), 1-hexadecene (15.59%) and hexadecanoic acid (12.14%). The antimicrobial activity of the isolated essential oil was investigated. Antimicrobial activity was observed against B. cereus, E. coli, E. coli O157:H7 and S. Aureus microorganisms. Moreover, an effect on the ferments of B. cereus, E. coli, E. coli O157:H7 and S. Aureus was detected.

- MakaleYalnız künye2012Scopus SJRQ2The effect of adding sour cherry pulp into yoghurt on the physicochemical properties, phenolic content and antioxidant activity during storage
Şengül, Memnune; Erkaya, Tuba; Şengül, Mustafa; Yildiz, Hilal
This study investigated the effect of adding sour cherry pulp into yoghurt on its physicochemical properties, phenolic content, antioxidant activity and sensory characteristics. Sour cherry pulp was added at 0%, 8%, 12% and 16% into the yoghurt, and measures were checked through 14days cold storage. The increasing sour cherry pulp concentration in yoghurt resulted in increasing pH and whey separation, whereas the values of the other parameters, total solid, fat, protein, ash, titratable acidity and viscosity decreased. During storage, total phenolic contents and antioxidant activity in yoghurts ranged from 20 to 81μg gallic acid equivalent per mg of sample and from 48% to 86%, respectively.
