Highly siderophile element and osmium isotope systematics of basaltic volcanics: a different approach to petrological processes

Arslan, Mehmet; Temi̇Zel, İrfan; Abdi̇Oğlu Yazar, Emel; Ar, Bahrican; Yücel, Cem

The highly siderophile element (HSE) or platinum group element (PGE) and Os isotope systematics of basaltic volcanics have recently received a significant attention because of their potential to constrain the petrological processes on magma generation and evolution. The HSE and Os isotope data, which are generally observed at very low concentrations in basalts and obtained by modern enrichment and analytical techniques, are frequently used in petrological studies. The HSE contents and ratios from whole-rock analysis of basalts, and combined evaluation with the theoretical knowledge and modelling of HSE behaviour during the partial melting of mantle and the differentiation of basaltic magma would provide opportunity for geochemical modelling on mantle melting. Besides, HSE contents and Pd-PGE/Ir-PGE ratios are important indicators for the nature of mantle sulfides, the sulfur saturation conditions of the mantle source, sulfide segregation, fractional crystallization, crustal assimilation and partial melting degrees in the origin and evolution of mantle-derived magmas. Therefore, in addition to the traditional whole-rock geochemical data obtained from Cenozoic aged basalts observed widely in Turkey, HSE and Os isotope systematics of these basalts can contribute to define the geochemical features of the mantle source, and to model petrological processes which are effective in the magma evolution.

Zircon U[sbnd]Pb geochronology and petrology of the tholeiitic gabbro from the Kovanlık (Giresun) area: Constraints for the Late Cretaceous bimodal arc magmatism in the Eastern Pontides Orogenic Belt, NE Turkey

Temizel, İrfan; Arslan, Mehmet; Abdioğlu Yazar, Emel; Aslan, Zafer; Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Baki Eraydın, Tuğba

Mafic intrusions of the Eastern Pontides Orogenic Belt (EPOB) in NE Turkey are found rarely in varying ages, sizes and compositions. Of these, tholeiitic gabbro stocks, namely Kovanlık gabbro, consist of pyroxene gabbro and minor hornblende gabbro with a mainly granular texture. The pyroxene gabbro contains plagioclase, clino- and ortho-pyroxene, olivine, and Fe[sbnd]Ti oxides, whereas the hornblende gabbro includes mainly plagioclase, hornblende, rarely biotite and Fe[sbnd]Ti oxides. The clinopyroxene compositions of the pyroxene gabbro exhibit arc-related tholeiitic magmas. The Kovanlık gabbroic rocks have high U/Yb zircon ratios, implying continental arc-related tectonic settings. Zircon U[sbnd]Pb dating on the Kovanlık gabbro yielded a concordia age of ~92 Ma (Turonian). Petrochemically, the gabbroic rocks have a tholeiitic character and show arc- and MORB-like signatures. The gabbroic rocks show positive Rb, Ba, K, Pb, Sr, Ti and negative Nb, Ce, Nd, Hf, Zr anomalies in N-MORB normalized diagrams. The chondrite-normalized REE plots of the rocks show flat to feeble right-dipping REE patterns (LaN/LuN = 0.94–2.56) with positive Eu anomalies (EuN/Eu* = 1.15–2.14; except for two pyroxene gabbro samples). The gabbroic rocks have 87Sr/86Sr(i) ratios (0.704533 to 0.706265), εNd(i) values (4.04–4.85), 206Pb/204Pb (18.56–18.68) and 207Pb/204Pb (15.61–15.64) ratios. Low Nb/La and Nb/Y ratios, as well as high Sr/Yb and Ba/Rb ratios, indicate that source regions were modified by slab-derived fluids and/or melts. The obtained zircon dating, isotopic and geochemical data, as well as regional geology, revealed that the tholeiitic mafic magma derived from a spinel-lherzolite mantle at a relatively shallow depth, and the Kovanlık gabbro in the EPOB represents one of the first mafic intrusions of Late Cretaceous bimodal arc magmatism related to the roll-back of the northwards subducting Tethys oceanic plate.

U–Pb zircon chronology and petrogenesis of Carboniferous plutons in the northern part of the Eastern Pontides, NE Turkey: Constraints for Paleozoic magmatism and geodynamic evolution

Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Arslan, Mehmet; Sipahi, Ferkan; Temizel, İrfan

Numerous intrusive rocks of varying ages and compositions exist in the Paleozoic to Tertiary periods in the Eastern Pontides. Carboniferous intrusive rocks are commonly observed in the southern part of the Eastern Pontides. The nature of the rocks in the northern part of the region has not been determined because of Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary volcano-sedimentary units. Whole-rock geochemical, isotopic and geochronological data obtained from five different mapped granitoid bodies located in the northern part of the Eastern Pontides allow for the proper reconstruction of Carboniferous magmatism and the geodynamic evolution of the region. According to laser ablation ICP-MS U–Pb zircon dating, the Özdil, Soğuksu, Seslikaya, Kızılağaç and Şahmetlik plutons have similar 206Pb/238U vs. 207Pb/235U concordia ages of 340.7 ± 1.8 Ma and 323.1 ± 1.5 Ma, 348.4 ± 1.6 Ma, 335.4 ± 1.4 Ma, 337.2 ± 0.6 Ma and 334.5 ± 1.4 Ma, respectively. The aluminium saturation index (ASI) values of all of the samples from the plutons are between 1.0 and 1.32, which indicate peraluminous melt compositions. The plutons have SiO2 contents between 59 and 79 wt.% and show low- to high-K calc-alkaline characteristics. The plutons are enriched in large-ion lithophile and light rare earth elements and are depleted in high-field strength elements. Chondrite-normalized rare earth element patterns are characterized by concave-upward shapes and pronounced negative Eu anomalies, with LaCN/YbCN = 1.9–46.8 and EuCN/Eu* = 0.19–1.76. The studied plutons show considerable variations in 87Sr/86Sr(i) (0.70255 to 0.71006) and εNd(i) values (− 4.8 to − 7.1), as well as Nd model ages (1.15 to 2.47 Ga). The Pb-isotopic ratios are 206Pb/204Pb = 17.11–18.60, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.58–15.64 and 208Pb/204Pb = 36.95–38.62. The crystallization temperatures of the melts range from 676 to 993 °C, as determined by zircon and apatite saturation thermometry. These data suggest that the Carboniferous granitic magmas were produced by the partial melting of meta-mafic to meta-felsic lower crustal source rocks, with minor contributions from the mantle. Collectively, these rocks represent a late stage of Hercynian magmatism in the northern part of the Eastern Pontides.

Crystal fractionation of adakitic magmas in the crust-mantle transition zone: Petrology, geochemistry and U-Pb zircon chronology of the Seme adakites, eastern Pontides, NE Turkey

Eyuboglu, Yener; Santosh, M.; Chung, Sun-Lin

Plutonic and porphyritic intrusions of adakitic rocks are widely distributed in the southern part of the eastern Pontides orogenic belt in Turkey. Ranging in age from late Paleocene to early Eocene, these intrusions provide critical information to evaluate the early Cenozoic geodynamic evolution of the eastern Mediterranean region. Here we report the results from our field, petrologic, geochemical and zircon U-Pb geochronological studies on adakitic intrusions in the Seme area from the southern part of eastern Pontides belt. The Seme granitoid, Daldibi dacite and Aslanca dacite porphyry from this region carry abundant plagioclcase, amphibole and biotite phenocrysts and have geochemical affinities typical of adakites including high SiO2 (58.48-75.6wt.%), Al2O3 (15.78-18.28wt.%), Na2O (3.94-5.08wt.%), Sr (506-1413ppm), and La (12.6-52.9ppm), moderate K2O (1.77-2.76wt.%), and low Y (4.7-14.2ppm) and Yb (0.28-1.29ppm). The early Eocene intrusions in the Seme area have compositional similarities with high-slica adakites, and their geochemical features suggest the involvement of slab-derived melts. The zircons separated from these rocks show euhedral crystal shapes with oscillatory cores typical of crystallization from magmas, as also confirmed by their high Th/U ratios (0.78 to 1.15). U-Pb analyses of zircons from the quartz diorite yielded a weighted mean 206Pb/238U age of 53.16±0.45Ma. Zircon grains from the Aslanca dacite porphyry occurring as a late phase within the Seme body show U-Pb isotopic ages of 53 and 52Ma concordant with U-Pb ages of zircons from quartz diorite. Based on major, trace and rare earth element data, we present a model suggesting crystal fractionation and/or differentation processes of subduction-related adakitic magmas stored in the crust-mantle transition zone, and their transfer into shallow depths of the overriding continental lithosphere.

Late Triassic subduction-related ultramafic-mafic magmatism in the Amasya region (eastern Pontides, N. Turkey): Implications for the ophiolite conundrum in Eastern Mediterranean

Eyuboglu, Yener; Santosh, M.; Bektas, Osman; Chung, Sun-Lin

The eastern Pontides orogenic belt of northeastern Turkey offers critical clues on convergent margin tectonics associated with the late Mesozoic-early Cenozoic geodynamic evolution of the eastern Mediterranean region. Here we report the geology, petrology, geochemistry, Nd-Sr-Pb isotopes and U-Pb zircon ages from a ultramafic-mafic complex in Aksalur which forms part of a series of Alaskan-type ultramafic-mafic bodies in the Amasya region located at the south-western corner of the eastern Pontides orogenic belt. These ultramafic-mafic intrusions occur as minor (30-300m in diameter), scattered, roughly circular bodies within the low-grade metamorphic rocks of the Tokat metamorphic massif. Petrographic studies characterise the rock types as gabbro and wehrlite, with the latter showing typical cumulate texture and mainly comprising serpentinized olivine, clinopyroxene, hornblende, mica and opaque minerals. The gabbroic rocks are characterized by relatively high initial ratios of 143Nd/144Nd (0.512618-0.512633) and low initial ratios of 87Sr/86Sr (0.70420-0.70435). Their initial Pb isotope ratios range from 17.306 to 17.771. The gabbros and cumulate wehrlites display geochemical distribution patterns analogous to the Alaskan-type intrusions that were derived from a subduction-related, high-alumina, hydrous basaltic parental magma in a convergent plate setting. LA-ICPMS analyses of zircons separated from the gabbros show high Th/U ratios (1.35-5.26) typical of magmatic origin. The U-Pb isotopic data define a weighted mean 206Pb/238U age of 203.3±4.9Ma. Detailed evaluation of the magma tectonics suggests that the Alaskan-type Aksalur ultramafic-mafic intrusions were accumulated in magma chamber(s) located at relatively shallow crustal levels. Two distinct magmatic pulses are identified: the first phase produced the gabbroic intrusions and the second phase was characterized by numerous small-scale werhlitic cumulate intrusions. In contrast to the previous models which assigned a mid-oceanic ridge-derived ophiolite affinity for ultramafic-mafic complexes in the eastern Pontides orogenic belt, our study reveals that these intrusions were derived from subduction-related high-alumina hydrous basaltic magmas transferred into the overlying relatively thin continental crust along deep-seated fractures.

Mineralogy, petrography and whole-rock geochemistry of the Tertiary granitic intrusions in the Eastern Pontides, Turkey

    Arslan, M.; Aslan, Z.

Granitic intrusions in Eocene and post-Eocene volcanic rocks outcrop in the Northern and Southern Zones of the Eastern Pontides, NE Turkey. Intrusions in the Northern Zone extend NW-SE whereas those in the Southern Zone are nearly E-W orientated. The contacts of the intrusions with the volcanic rocks are sharp, epidotized and include volcanic xenoliths. The margins of Southern Zone intrusions often contain abundant angular mafic microgranular enclaves of diorite to quartz diorite composition. The rocks also show evidence of mingling and mixing between coeval mafic and felsic magmas. Field observations suggest a stopping type of ascent and emplacement style for the intrusions. Petrographically, intrusions show variations in both colour and mineralogy with fine to medium granular, monzonitic, poikilitic, rapakivi, anti-rapakivi and graphic textures. Based on modal mineralogy, the Northern rocks are monzonite, quartz monzonite, monzodiorite and quartz monzodiorite whereas the Southern samples are monzogranite and granodiorite. The rocks are generally calc-alkaline to mildly alkaline transitional and metaluminous, and show a CAFEMIC trend. The Northern Zone intrusions form a post-collisional, A-type, alkaline monzonitic association and Southern Zone intrusions form a post-collisional, I-type, granodioritic calc-alkaline-transitional association. Whole-rock compositional data indicate that differentiation occurred via fractional crystallisation with or without magma mixing. Incompatible and rare earth element patterns indicate that both the Northern and the Southern Zone intrusions were derived from melting of a mantle region enriched by subduction-related fluids but evolved differently during ascent and emplacement. U-Pb zircon dating in the Southern Zone yields an intrusion age of 44.4±0.3 Ma. Regional geodynamics indicates post-collisional extensional tectonics in the region. Crustal involvement and the level of emplacement may have been important for magmatic evolution, especially for the Southern Zone intrusions, after the cessation of subduction and subsequent crustal thickening.
