- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ3The effect of mine waste ratio and curing duration on the mechanical properties of ground granulated blast furnace slag-based geopolymer mortars
Aksüt, Yavuz Selim; Nas, Evin; Sünnetçi, Kadir; Kaya, Yusuf
This study investigates the mechanical and microstructural behavior of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS)-based geopolymer mortars in which mining waste (MW) was used as a partial binder replacement (0–30%) under ambient water curing for 7–90 days. Increasing MW content reduced workability and slightly prolonged setting due to its coarser and less reactive characteristics. Mechanical performance improved with curing time and mixtures with moderate MW levels achieved the best strength and microstructural densification. Water absorption and porosity decreased with age, reflecting progressive gel formation. Scanning electron microscope–X-ray diffraction (SEM-XRD) analyses verified matrix densification and enhanced gel development at intermediate MW ratios. Overall, the findings show that controlled MW incorporation can optimize the balance between strength, pore structure and sustainability, enabling ambient cured GGBFS-based geopolymers without thermal curing. The study provides new insights by using MW as a binder phase replacement while preserving precursor chemistry, a rarely explored approach.

Aksüt, Yavuz Selim; Kaya, Yusuf; Sünnetçi, Kadir
The growing environmental concerns over resource depletion and carbon emissions from cement production have accelerated the search for sustainable alternatives to conventional concrete. In this context, geopolymers have emerged as promising binders, particularly through the utilization of aluminosilicate-rich industrial wastes to reduce environmental impact and support waste recycling. This study examines the mechanical and durability properties of geopolymer mortars produced by partially replacing ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) with mining waste (MW) at ratios of 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%. The mixtures were activated using 10 M sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate under standard water curing conditions. Mechanical strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), freeze–thaw resistance, and sulfate durability were evaluated. The optimum performance was obtained with 20% MW, which achieved a 30.4% increase in flexural strength and 18% in compressive strength at 7 days. This mixture also showed the lowest mass (10.69%) and strength loss (18.36%) after 50 freeze–thaw cycles. Scanning electron microscopy analysis confirmed enhanced gel formation and microstructural densification. The findings demonstrate that controlled use of MW not only improves durability but also promotes sustainable binder development in geopolymer technology.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1The effect of high B4C ratio on the improvement of mechanical properties and wear resistance of Al2024/B4C composites fabricated by mechanical milling-assisted hot pressing
Beder, Murat
In this study, the effects of 0 wt% (C0), 10 wt% (C1), 20 wt% (C2) and 40 wt% (C3) B4C content on the microstructure, mechanical properties and dry wear properties of Al2024/B4C composites were investigated. In order to prepare Al2024 matrix composites with different B4C particle contents, mechanical milling (MM) and hot pressing (HP) were employed as powder metallurgy methods. It was found that the θ (CuAl2) phase content in the microstructure of Al2024/B4C compact materials increased with increasing B4C particle reinforcement, reaching its highest value at 40 wt% B4C (C3) reinforcement ratio. As the B4C particle reinforcement content increased, the hardness values of the composite samples increased. Flexural strength values were 445.30 MPa, 495.20 MPa, 277.59 MPa, and 129.37 MPa for samples coded C0, C1, C2, and C3, respectively. It was found that the C0 sample without particle reinforcement exhibited more than 10 times the volume loss of the C3 sample with the highest particle reinforcement at 450 m sliding distance. The SEM examination of the friction surfaces of the Al2024/B4C composite samples showed that the worn surfaces were composed of delamination, adhesion and smearing layers.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2Slag Substitution Effect on Features of Alkali-Free Accelerator-Reinforced Cemented Paste Backfill
Cavusoglu, Ibrahim
Cemented paste backfill (CPB) improves underground stability by filling mine voids, but the high cost of cement presents economic challenges for miners. While alternative binders and admixtures have been explored, the combined impact of slag substitution and alkali-free (AF) accelerators on CPB performance is not yet fully understood. This study investigates the influences of slag substitution and AF accelerators on the performance of CPB through a comprehensive experimental approach. CPB samples were prepared with slag substitution ratios of 25%, 50%, and 75%, maintaining a fixed AF accelerator content of 0.4%. Various test techniques, including unconfined comprehensive strength (UCS), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermal analysis (TG/DTA), were employed to study their mechanical and microstructural properties. Monitoring tests were also conducted to thoroughly assess the performance of CPB, including suction (self-desiccation), electrical conductivity (EC), and volumetric water content (VWC) tests. The results showed that the PCI50–SL50–0.4AF sample exhibited 2.3 times higher strength than the control sample for 28 days, with this improvement attributed to enhanced pozzolanic reactions contributing to better microstructural compactness. Monitoring tests revealed accelerated hydration kinetics and reduced water content in slag-reinforced CPB, highlighting the significant role of AF accelerator in facilitating rapid setting and improving early-age mechanical strength. Microstructural findings revealed that porosity decreased and C–S–H gel formation increased in the specimen containing slag and AF accelerators, contributing to increased strength and durability. These findings highlight the potential usage of slag and AF accelerators to enhance CPB’s mechanical, microstructural, and hydration properties, offering significant benefits for mining operations by improving backfill performance, while contributing to environmental sustainability through reduced cement consumption and associated CO2 emissions.

Yılmaz, Tekin
The existing exploratory focuses to examine the effect of relocating ordinary Portland cement (OPC) by divergent proportions (2.5–15 %, by vol.) of desiccant silica-gel waste (DSGW) on the strength/durability/microstructural traits of self-compacting mortars (SCMs). A large experimental programme comprising unconfined compressive- (UCS: 7/28/56/90 days) and flexural-strength (FS: 7/28/56/90 days), freeze-thaw (F-T: 50/100 cycles), sorptivity (Sp: 28 days), porosity (PT: 28 days) and scanning electron microscope (SEM: 28 days) tests was conducted on the fabricated SCMs. From the gathered findings, the replacing OPC by 10 % DSGW, compared to the Control, was detected to signify the most efficacious contribution on SCMs' strength (UCS/FS = +15.2/12.3 %), durability (UCS/FS-losses after 50 and 100 F-T = −4.7/−6.1 % and − 10.0/−12.7 %) behavior, which is in tune with the ameliorated microstructure (Sp = −35.2 %, PT = −19.2 % and SEM = higher C-S-H gel, less micro-crack).

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1Effect of White-Portland cement containing micro and nano silica on the mechanical and freeze-thaw properties of self compacting mortars
Etli, Serkan; Yılmaz, Tekin; Hansu, Osman
This study concentrated to investigate the influences of white-Portland cement (W-PC) containing silica fume (SF: micro-silica (µSi) and nano-silica (nSi)) as replacement (2–4 wt%) on mechanical (strength and durability), physical and microstructural behaviors of self-compacting mortars (SCMs) fabricated at 0.48–0.63 w/b ratios. In keeping with these purposes, besides of carrying out the workability (mini-slump flow: M−SF and V-funnel: V-F) experiments of SCMs, the mechanical and microstructural tests implemented were: unconfined compressive strength (UCS), flexural strength (FS), freeze–thaw (F-T) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. The outcomes displayed that, in comparison with the control, replacing W-PC by SF (particularly nSi) enhanced the UCS and FS, resisted against F-T durability by lowering the strength losses in UCS and FS. The ameliorated microstructure resulting in a reduction in the number and/or a narrowing in the size of micro-cracks and pores contributed to generate a more compact and consolidated SCM structure for the improving of strength and durability due of pore-filling effect and superior pozzolanic characteristics of µSi and especially nSi, this in turn reduced the permeability of SCM, which has a significant effect on the strength and durability behaviors of the SCM.

Beder, Murat; Varol, Temel; Akçay, Serhatcan Berk
Metal matrix composites are increasingly being recognized as new wear-resistant materials. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the microstructure, mechanical properties, and wear resistance of Al–Cu–Mg alloy matrix composites reinforced with high contents of Al2O3 particles. Moreover, the effects of 10, 20, and 40 wt% Al2O3 contents on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and dry wear resistance of the Al–Cu–Mg matrix composites are studied. The results show that the θ (CuAl2) phase ratio increases with increasing Al2O3 contents. The hardness values of the samples also increase with increasing Al2O3 contents. The highest tensile and flexural strengths are measured as 284 and 562.9 MPa, respectively, and these values are obtained for the composite material reinforced with 10 wt% Al2O3 particles. The continuous increase in the hardness of the samples with increasing Al2O3 content may cause the lowest volume loss for the 40 wt% Al2O3-reinforced composite. The friction surfaces show that the wear surfaces comprise adhesion, delamination, and smear layers. Overall, compared to the Al2O3-reinforced composite samples, pure Al–Cu–Mg alloy samples show approximately 2 times more mass gain.

Beder, Murat; Akçay, Serhatcan Berk; Varol, Temel; Çuvalcı, Hamdullah
In this study, the microstructure, hardness, tensile strength, and dry wear properties of the cast AlSi10Mg alloy as well as the effects of processing parameters on the oxidation behavior of this alloy were investigated. In this context, AlSi10Mg (wt%) alloy was produced by gravity die casting method, and then, air cooling, quenching, and T6 treatment were applied. The microstructure of the alloy was investigated using an optical microscope, SEM, and EDS. Additionally, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to determine the effect of processing parameters on the oxidation behavior of the samples. The friction and wear properties of the alloy were investigated using a ball-on-disk wear test device. It was founded that the as-cast AlSi10Mg alloy's microstructure contained phases of α(Al), Si, and β-Mg2Si. It has been observed that the microstructure of the cast AlSi10Mg alloy gradually turns into a spherical form when quenching and air-cooling heat treatments are applied. Also, T6 heat treatment led to further spheroidization of Si particles, formation of β-Mg2Si precipitates, and elimination of the Chinese script morphology of the β-Mg2Si phase. It was observed that the yield strength of the AlSi10Mg alloy in the as-cast state decreased negligibly compared to the air-cooled state, while there was an increase of up to 70% in the aging-treated condition. The results show that the tensile strength of the as-cast AlSi10Mg alloy increased by 115% after aging. Additionally, it was found that the AlSi10Mg alloy's wear resistance increased with the aging process.

Savaşkan, Temel; Hekimoğlu, Ali Paşa; Azaklı, Zeki
The effect of isothermal exposure at temperatures from 100°C to 250°C for 8 hours on the structure, mechanical and tribological properties of the Zn – 40% Al – 2% Cu – 2% Si alloy produced by chill casting is studied. The isothermal treatment eliminates dendritic segregation yielding a coarse-grained polyhedral structure containing an α-solid solution with fine inclusions of silicon and zinc-rich phase. Increase in the temperature of the isothermal exposure leads to decrease in the hardness and strength and increase in the ductility, in the coefficient of friction and in the wear magnitude while reducing the average roughness of the alloy surface.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Scopus SJRQ2Engineering Properties of Cemented Paste Backfill with Full-Range Water-Reducing Admixture
Cavusoglu, Ibrahim; Fall, Mamadou
This paper presents the effects of a full-range water-reducing (FRWR) admixture on the key engineering properties of cemented paste backfill (CPB). CPB samples with a certain slump are prepared with 4.5% cement by mass of the tailings and different dosages of an FRWR admixture (superplasticizer contents of 1%, 3%, and 5%) to evaluate their water demand during hydration, rheological properties, self-desiccation ability, and microstructural and mechanical properties. Moreover, cement paste samples with a high water-to-cement ratio (w/c = 2) which are used to model the cement matrix of the CPB are prepared for x-ray diffraction (XRD) scanning and thermal analyses (TAns). The results show that the addition of an FRWR admixture to the studied CPB can reduce its water demand by up to 23% and significantly increase its strength from 1.0 MPa to 2.38 MPa (by approximately 2.4 times) at 28 days. The pore volume of the CPB samples is also significantly reduced from 27.17 to 18.27% due to the capability of the FRWR admixture to reduce water demand. Also, the addition of an FRWR admixture to the CPB results in a substantial decrease (up to 83%) of its yield stress, thereby improving its flowability. The CPB samples with an FRWR admixture are found to have a higher negative pore water pressure, i.e., higher self-desiccation, than the CPB sample without an FRWR admixture. The microstructural analysis also shows that the FRWR admixture has an increasing effect on the hydration products in the CPB mixture.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Investigation of microstructural change and damping behaviour of Zn–27Al– 1Cu alloy in different aging periods; [Zn–27Al–1Cu alaşımının farklı yaşlandırma periyotlarında mikroyapısal değişiminin ve darbe davranışının incelenmesi]
Şenaslan, Fatih; Aydin, Murat
The ternary Zn–27Al–1Cu alloy is produced from raw materials by the gravity casting method. The produced alloy was subjected to aging after solutionizing and quenching. The effect of aging at different periods on the microstructure and damping behaviour of the alloy was investigated. The microstructural investigations revealed that the microstructure of the alloy in the as-cast state consisted of aluminium(Al)-rich α dendrites surrounded by eutectoid β phase, and zinc(Zn)-rich η phase and copper(Cu)-rich ε phase. The heat treatment eliminated the dendritic microstructure of the casting alloy and transformed it into a coarse-grained (β-matrix) stable form containing Zn-rich and Cu-rich precipitates. The microstructural changes after aging process were directly affected the mechanical properties of the alloy. The hardness and tensile strength increased with increasing ageing time up to 2.5 hours, but the percent elongation decreased. When the aging time reached 5 hours, hardness and tensile strength decreased while percent elongation increased significantly. The impact energy, namely toughness, increased in the early stage of aging, reduced sharply with increasing aging time and remained stable with a small increase in the prolonged stage of aging. The highest impact energy was attained from the aged alloy for 0.5 hours. The variation in damping energy was dependent on the changes in microstructural and mechanical properties caused by different aging periods. The prolonged aging process transformed the fracture characteristic of the as-cast alloy from relatively brittle to ductile fracture.
- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ1Sodium silicate effect on setting properties, strength behavior and microstructure of cemented coal fly ash backfill
Cavusoglu, Ibrahim; Yilmaz, Erol; Yilmaz, Ali Osman
Representing an engineered mixture of coal fly ash, cement and water, cemented coal fly ash backfill (CCB) is typically employed for filling the openings created after coal excavation in the earth. A high rate of productivity for coal mines requires a high early-age strength backfill design. Therefore, the use of admixtures in CCB is key for accelerating the backfill setting time and augmenting short-and long-term strength. This study offers the effect of sodium silicate (SS) as an accelerator on early age mechanical and microstructure properties of CCB. SS-based admixture was used for a dosage of 0.5, 1 and 1.5 wt% in CCB that contains 25 wt% ordinary Portland cement OPC and 75 wt% coal fly ash. Backfill setting time was done by using the Vicat system while its strength and pore structure were measured by using the uniaxial compressive strength test, and scanning electron microscopy and Hg intrusion porosimetry. Results display that use of SS in CCB increases its short-term strength gain up to 14% and shortens the mining cycle by cutting its setting time up to 58%. The microstructure analyses also indicate that CCB formulated with SS has a finer pore structure than that without admixture. The outcomes of the present study will be advantageous to evaluate both setting time and strength behavior of CCB used in coal mines, thereby causing the effective backfill plan in terms of money saving and easy operation.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ1Additivity effect on properties of cemented coal fly ash backfill containing water-reducing admixtures
Cavusoglu, Ibrahim; Yilmaz, Erol; Yilmaz, Ali Osman
Cemented coal fly ash backfill (CCB), a flowable structure of coal fly ash, binding agent and mixing water, has been often employed in mining operations to offer ground support as well as waste disposal solutions. An appropriate CCB mass should have sufficient rheological (e.g., workability) and mechanical (e.g., strength and stability) characteristics. Chemical admixtures are well known to greatly enhance the pumpability and strength properties of cementitious materials. Thus, this work provides the effect of water-reducing admixtures (namely, Sikament MR 50 W and Sikament FFN) on characteristics of CCB materials manufactured at a constant slump value. The role of admixtures in CCB mix is to reduce the cement-related costs, to modify the properties of the hardened backfills, and to ensure the quality of the backfill during mixing, transporting, placing, and curing. These admixtures were used at a dosage of 1% and 2% by weight of anhydrous material on cement. Several laboratory tests including slump, setting time, uniaxial compressive strength, scanning electron microscopy and mercury intrusion porosimetry were undertaken on CCB samples to understand their fresh and hardened performance. Experimental results show that the admixtures used ensure the slump required to deliver CCB at low water/cement ratios, improve short- and long-term backfill strengths up to 33%, and decrease the total porosity of the tested CCB. The findings of this study also show that the admixture use in CCB leads to a significant decrease in the considered cement content and a remarkable increase in the mechanical strength. As a result, understanding the actual fresh and hardened properties of CCB remains crucial for the choice of the greatest acting backfill admixture and for a fruitful change from capable experimental results to the in-situ conditions.

BEDER, M.; ALEMDAG, Y.
The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of Mg addition and T6 heat treatment on microstructure, mechanical and tribological properties of the Al–Si–Cu–Mg alloys. In this context, a series of Al–12Si–3Cu–(0.5–2.5)Mg (wt.%) alloys were produced by permanent mould casting, and then subjected to T6 treatment. Their microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated using OM, XRD, SEM, EDS along with hardness, tension, compression and Charpy impact tests. Dry sliding friction and wear properties of the alloys were studied using a ball-on-disk type tester. It was observed that the microstructure of as-cast Al–12Si–3Cu–Mg alloys consisted of α(Al), Si, θ-CuAl2, β-Mg2Si, Q-Al5Mg8Cu2Si6 and π-Al8Mg3FeSi6 phases. T6 heat treatment gave rise to nearly spherodization of eutectic Si particles, formation of finer θ-CuAl2 and β-Mg2Si precipitates and elimination of Chinese script morphology of β-Mg2Si phase. The addition of Mg up to 2.5 wt.% decreased the hardness, tensile and compressive strengths, tensile elongation and impact toughness of the as-cast and T6-treated alloys and increased their friction coefficient and volume loss. T6 treatment, on the other hand, led to a significant increase in mechanical properties and wear resistance of as-cast alloys.

Saricaoglu, Furkan T.; Atalar, Ilyas; Yilmaz, Volkan A.; Odabas, Halil I.; Gul, Osman
The effect of high pressure homogenization (HPH) on physical and bioactive properties of rosehip nectar was investigated. Rosehip nectar has a sedimentation problem while waiting on the market shelf during the sale, for solving this problem, nectars were passed 1, 2 and 3 times through 75, 100 and 125 MPa pressures. Mean particle size decreased as pressure and pass number increased (p < 0.05), whereas zeta potential did not change (p > 0.05). Microstructural images revealed that HPH treatment disrupted the cells and caused to release of cell materials to serum. HPH treatment increased the ΔE values (from 2.48 to 6.03). HPH treated samples showed no sedimentation during storage for 15 days. All samples showed shear thinning behavior and were characterized as weak gel network (G′ > G″). Total phenolic content and ascorbic acid results were decreased by HPH treatments due to increasing outlet temperatures of product, however, antioxidant capacity of nectars increased after treatment due to increasing total carotenoid content. This study indicated that HPH treatment could solve the sedimentation problem during shelf life with minimally affecting bioactive and physical properties of rosehip nectar.

ALEMDAG, Yasin; BEDER, Murat
The effects of Zn content on strength and wear performance of Al−12Si−3Cu alloy synthesized by gravity casting were systematically investigated. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloys were evaluated using OM, XRD, SEM as well as hardness, tension, compression and Charpy impact tests. Their dry sliding wear tests were carried out with a ball-on-disk tester. Microscopic examinations revealed that the microstructure of the base alloy consisted of the α(Al) dendrites, needle-type and coarse Si particles, and CuAl2 (θ) phase. The addition of Zn to this alloy resulted in the formation of α-solid solution phase and the increase of coarse Si particles. The hardness, yield, tensile and compressive strengths, elongation to fracture and impact toughness of the Al−12Si−3Cu−Zn alloys increased with increasing Zn content, but tendency in the tensile and compressive strengths and ductility reversed after adding 1.5%−2% Zn. In addition, the friction coefficient and volume loss of the Al−12Si−3Cu−Zn alloys decreased with increasing Zn content. The study showed that the addition of Zn to Al−12Si−3Cu alloy can improve its potential applications as tribological material.

Alemdag, Y.; Beder, M.
In this study, one ternary Al-7Si-4Zn and five quaternary Al-7Si-4Zn-(1-5) Cu alloys were synthesised by permanent mould casting. Dry sliding friction and wear properties of the alloys were investigated by using ball-on-disc type tester after determining their microstructure and mechanical properties. The microstructure of the Al-7Si-4Zn alloy consisted of aluminium-rich alpha-dendrites, eutectic and primary silicon particles. Addition of copper less than 2% had no considerable effect on the microstructure of ternary alloy, but when the copper content exceeded this level the theta (CuAl2) phase formed in the microstructure of the quaternary alloys. The tensile strength and hardness of the alloys and microhardness of alpha-phase increased with increasing amount of copper but their percentage of elongation decreased with it. Copper addition up to 3% reduced the friction coefficient and volume loss of the alloys, above which they showed an increase. The wear surfaces of the alloys were characterised by smearing and de-lamination, but smearing appeared to be the dominant mechanism for their wear. The highest wear resistance was obtained with the Al-7Si-4Zn-3Cu alloy while the Al-7Si-4Zn alloy had the lowest wear resistance among the alloys tested.

Alemdaǧ, Yasin; Beder, Murat
A series of Al-7Si-(0-5)Zn alloys were produced by permanent mould casting and their microstructure, mechanical and tribological properties were investigated in as-cast state. The microstructure of Al-7Si alloy consisted of α-Al dendrites surrounded by eutectic Al-Si mixture and a small amount of primary silicon particles. Addition of zinc into Al-7Si alloy resulted in the formation of α-solid solution and an increase in size and volume fraction of primary silicon particles. Moreover, these particles gathered inside interdendritic regions of the ternary Al-7Si-Zn alloys. The density, strength and hardness of Al-7Si-Zn alloys increased continuously with increasing zinc content, but their elongation to fracture and impact energy showed a reverse trend. It was also observed that zinc had no significant effect on the friction coefficient of the alloys, but their wear volume decreased with increasing zinc content up to 4%, above which the trend reversed. The wear surfaces of the alloys were characterized mainly by smearing layer with some degree of oxidation. In addition, delamination and fine scratches were observed on the worn surface. It was concluded that the addition of zinc up to 4% improves both mechanical and wear behaviour of Al-7Si alloy.
