Psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the VARK learning style inventory for athletes

Türker, Üstün; Somoğlu, Mustafa Barış; Koç, Mustafa; Bostancı, Özgür

Background: Understanding how athletes learn and recognizing their learning preferences are important cognitive and sensory components that may support effective instructional planning in sport settings. This study aimed to adapt the VARK Learning Style Inventory for Athletes (Visual, Aural, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic modalities) into Turkish and to evaluate its psychometric properties. Methods: A total of 854 licensed athletes from individual and team sports in Türkiye participated in the study. The Turkish version of the VARK Learning Style Inventory for Athletes was administered using a paper-based format. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics (v26) and LISREL (v8.80). Construct validity was examined using a Multitrait–Multimethod Confirmatory Factor Analysis (MTMM-CFA) approach with a correlated trait–correlated uniqueness (CTCU) specification, while reliability was assessed using internal consistency and test–retest procedures. Results: The MTMM-CFA supported the four-factor structure of the inventory, indicating an acceptable model fit and strong associations among the learning style dimensions, consistent with a multimodal learning preference profile. Internal consistency analyses yielded Kuder–Richardson 20 (KR-20) coefficients ranging from 0.574 to 0.623 across subscales, reflecting moderate reliability. Conclusions: The findings suggest that the Turkish version of the VARK Learning Style Inventory for Athletes demonstrates acceptable psychometric properties, with evidence of construct validity and moderate internal consistency. While the results support its use for assessing learning preferences among Turkish athletes, further research across different sport disciplines and age groups is recommended to strengthen there liability evidence and practical applicability. Overall, the study contributes to measurement practices in sport and exercise sciences by providing a culturally adapted instrument for examining athletes’ learning preferences.

Psychometric validation of the Turkish Short form of the disaster resilience scale for individuals

    Doğru, Salih

Purpose This study adapts and validates the Short Form of the Disaster Resilience Scale for Individuals (DRSi-SF) into Turkish, aiming to provide a practical tool for assessing disaster preparedness in high-risk contexts. Method Data were collected from 505 adults across Türkiye, a country highly exposed to earthquakes, floods, and landslides. The DRSi-SF was translated and back-translated, with linguistic equivalence confirmed via paired t-tests and correlations. Psychometric analyses included exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, internal consistency, concurrent validity testing with the Disaster Risk Perception Scale, and measurement invariance across gender and disaster experience groups. Findings and Conclusion The Turkish DRSi-SF retained its original three-factor structure—knowledge, readiness, and action—with acceptable fit indices (CFI = 0.906, RMSEA = 0.074) and reliability (α = 0.71). Disaster resilience correlated positively with risk perception, supporting concurrent validity. Measurement invariance was established at configural, metric, and scalar levels across groups, enabling meaningful subgroup comparisons. Practical implications The DRSi-SF offers a brief, scalable instrument for policymakers, emergency agencies, and NGOs to identify resilience levels, inform preparedness strategies, and target interventions. Its brevity facilitates integration into e-government systems, mobile applications, and community-based screenings. Originality This is the first Turkish adaptation of the DRSi-SF, aligning with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and providing a culturally relevant, psychometrically sound tool applicable to other hazard-prone regions.

Reliability and Validity of the Turkish Version of the Walsh Family Resilience Questionnaire

    Arslan, Kübra; Hatipoğlu, Ertuğrul

A multidimensional scale to measure family resilience, which focuses on facilitating positive adaptation and strengthening the family unit when affected by high-stressful events, does not exist in Turkish. The aim of this study was to adapt the Family Resilience Scale into Turkish and to conduct a validity and reliability study. The Family Resilience Scale was translated into Turkish and back-translated. Simple random sampling was used to create a representative sample of adults from 321 families selected in Turkey in 2022. The reliability of the scale as a whole and of the subscales was examined using Cronbach’s alpha. Test-retest reliability, the scale was administered to 30 individuals two weeks apart to determine reliability using the test-retest method. Cronbach alpha coefficients were greater than 0.70 for all scales. The test-retest reliability for the General Family Resilience Scale score was found to be.725. According to the results of the confirmatory factor analysis, chi-square χ2 = 2.598; RMSEA= 0.071; SRMR= 0.06; IFI= 0.90; CFI= 0.90; GFI= 0.89; TLI= 0.88. This study provides evidence that the Family Resilience Scale has good validity, reliability and test-retest reliability for Turkish families. Further testing, including construct validity and testing in different contexts, will strengthen the evidence. This scale will find application in resilience research, clinical settings, and facilitate the development and evaluation of intervention programmes to build resilience in Turkish families.
