Examination of Post-Traumatic Stress Reaction, Quality of Life, and Loneliness Levels in Adolescents Who Experienced an Earthquake

Akay, Gamze; Koç, Elif Simay; Oğuzhan, Hatice

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between post-traumatic stress, quality of life, and loneliness levels in adolescents following the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş. The research, designed as descriptive and correlational, was conducted with 701 children aged 13–18 who experienced the earthquake in Kahramanmaraş. Data were collected through a Demographic Information Form, the Child Post-Traumatic Stress Reaction Index, the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory, and the UCLA Loneliness Scale-Short Form. Ethical principles were adhered to throughout the study. Female adolescents were found to have higher levels of post-traumatic stress (t = 3.508, p < 0.001) and lower quality of life (t = 4.223, p < 0.001). The adolescents exhibited severe levels of post-traumatic stress (55.25 ± 13.80). It was determined that the mother’s education level (F = 4.423, p = 0.002), the father’s occupation (F = 2.859, p = 0.036), and perceived income level (F = 5.912, p = 0.003) significantly influenced adolescents’ loneliness levels. The father’s occupation (F = 3.403, p = 0.017) was found to have a significant effect on post-traumatic stress levels, and perceived income level (F = 4.753, p = 0.009) had a significant effect on quality of life. A moderate negative correlation was found between post-traumatic stress levels and quality of life (r = −0.474, p < 0.001), and a weak positive correlation was observed between post-traumatic stress and loneliness levels (r = 0.215, p < 0.001). A weak negative correlation was also found between quality of life and loneliness levels (r = −0.284, p < 0.001). A moderate negative correlation was found between adolescents’ post-traumatic stress levels and quality of life, while a weak positive correlation was observed between post-traumatic stress levels and loneliness. It is recommended to provide psychological support and guidance services aimed at reducing post-traumatic stress and loneliness levels in adolescents.

Development and psychometric evaluation of the healthy internet use scale for adolescents

Özparlak, Arif; Gül, Uğur; Karakaya, Dudu; Efe, Emine

Objective The aim of this study was to develop the Healthy Internet Use Scale for Adolescents (HIUS-A) and examine its psychometric properties in order to evaluate healthy internet use (HIU) among adolescents. Methods The study was conducted according to a methodological, correlational and cross-sectional design. Data was collected between September and December 2025 at three middle schools and three high schools in the province of Antalya, Türkiye. The study used a stratified sampling method, and it was completed with 516 adolescents. The scale's content validity was examined through expert evaluation, and its construct validity was tested through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. The reliability of the scale was assessed using Cronbach's alpha coefficient, split-half reliability, and item-total correlations. Results The analyses revealed that HIUS-A exhibited a two-factor structure explaining 49.1% of the total variance. These factors were named “self-control” and “conscious use”. Confirmatory factor analysis findings revealed that the model showed a good level of fit (χ2/sd = 1.450; RMSEA = 0.042; SRMR = 0.039; CFI = 0.981). The internal consistency coefficient was calculated as 0.864 for the total scale, 0.855 for the “self-control” subscale, and 0.711 for the “conscious use” subscale. Conclusion HIUS-A is a valid and reliable ten-item assessment tool for evaluating healthy internet use in adolescents. Implications for practice The scale may be used by nurses and other healthcare professionals to determine HIU levels in adolescents and to evaluate the effectiveness of intervention studies relating to HIU.

    Tuncay, Birgul; Göger, Berrin

Objective: This study aimed to assess the digital game addiction and sleep quality in adolescents and examine the relationship between them. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted with 312 students from three high schools located in a district center in the Eastern Black Sea Region, who agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected using the descriptive information form, the digital game addiction scale, and the Pittsburgh sleep quality index. Results: The mean age of the participants was 15.99 +/- 0.85 years. Of the participants, 78.5% played digital games on computers, mobile phones, tablets, or game rooms. The mean score of the participants on the digital game addiction scale was 12.46 +/- 5.57; 16.3% were game addicts. The Pittsburgh sleep quality index mean score was 4.72 +/- 2.53, with a score range of 0-13; 34.9% had poor sleep quality. Conclusion: In conclusion, a positive, low-level, statistically significant relationship was found between the digital game addiction scale and Pittsburgh sleep quality index scores (r=0.157, p <= 0.001). As the digital game addiction scores increase in adolescents, their sleep quality scores also increase. Game addiction and sleep-related problems in adolescents can negatively affect their physical and psychological health and academic success. Adequate supervision and protective measures are required to reduce the problems faced by adolescents when using digital technology.
