Objective: There are increasing studies examining retinal fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell layer (GCL) thinning in patients with schizophrenia. However, the results are controversial, and clinical and cognitive reflections of these findings remain unclear. With this study, we aim to examine retinal abnormalities and establish correlations with cognitive and clinical parameters. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we examined 29 patients with schizophrenia and 13 age and gender-matched healthy controls. All participants underwent psychometric assessment, neuropsychological tests, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurements. The retinal fiber layer and ganglion cell layer thickness were used as retinal parameters. Results: Five patients dropped out during the OCT measurement process, 24 patients with schizophrenia and nine healthy controls were included in the analysis. There was no statistically significant difference between groups in measuring retinal nerve fiber layer or ganglion cell layer thicknesses. The verbal fluency test score negatively correlated with left RNFL superior (p = - .422, p <.05). STROOP response duration positively correlated with right RNFL on average (p = .551, p <.05), left RNFL on average (p = .498, p <.05), right RNFL superior (p = .507, p <.05), left RNFL superior (p = .461, p <.05) and right RNFL temporal values (p = .434, p <.05). STROOP response error was also positively correlated with right RNFL temporal thickness (p = .430, p <.05). STROOP response duration was positively correlated with right GCL total (p = .646, p <.01), right GCL superior (p = .658, p <.01) and right GCL inferior (p = .596, p <.01) thickness. Conclusion: We did not find a significant relationship between reduced RNFL or GCL thickness and cognitive impairment. However, we had several positive correlations between cognitive task scores and RNFL and GCL thicknesses. Additionally, our study did not correlate symptom severity and clinical severity parameters with reduced RNFL or GCL thickness.

Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the self-care agency of women during pregnancy. Methods: A descriptive and cross-sectional design was used in the study. The population of the study consisted of women with pregnancy who presented to obstetrics outpatient clinics in Gumushane public hospital between January 30, 2018 and June 20, 2018, and the sample included women who accepted to voluntarily participate in the study (n=201). Data collection tools included a personal information form and the SelfCare Agency Scale. The data were analyzed on a statistical software package, and the level of significance was determined as p<0.05. Results: : The mean age of the pregnant women who participated in the study was 27.50 +/- 4.84 (min.-max.=18-41), 72.5% of them had high school and higher education, and 54.8% was housewives. Profession, adequate and balanced nutrition, participation in social activities, and getting social support were found to create statistically significant differences in self-care agency scale scores (p<0,05). It was determined that more than half of the women with pregnancy had a very good level of self-care agency. Conclusion: Many factors (increasing number of curettage, occupational groups, participation in social activities, adequate and balanced nutrition, and support from the family) affect the self-care agency of women during pregnancy. It is recommended that health professionals discuss and evaluate self-care issues in pregnancy in their in-service education programs.

Objective: The aim of this study is to examine the contraception choices of men, aged between 18-60 and living in the center of a province in the Gumushane. Methods: The study is of a descriptive type. As a data collection form, an Individual Information Form consisting of a total of 32 questions was used. This form questions the demographic-physical-biological-social-health histories of the participants and their knowledge, attitudes, behaviors about contraception methods. Averages were given together with standard deviations. Results: 20.8 % of the participants are aged between 26-33. It was seen that 25.3% of the participants had knowledge about contraception methods and 64.7% did not use any methods. When the variables of the age and the marital status are approached in terms of having sufficient knowledge about contraception and still using contraception methods, there is a statistical significance between the variable of 'is the use of contraception methods harmful to health?' with the status of still using contraception methods. A statistical significance is also found between the variable of being sexually active with the status of having sufficient knowledge about contraception and still using contraception methods (p<0.05). Conclusion: In this study, It has been determined that men who had sufficient information about contraceptions had higher age and higher education levels, were sexually active and married. It has been seen that the age, the marital status, the perception of contraception as harmful to health, the status of being sexually active did not affect receiving any training about contraception.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Diabetes Risk Assessment with Blood Parameters of The First Degree Relatives of Patients with Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus
Demirag, Hatice; Boyraz, Sakine
Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the diabetes risk in first degree relatives of Type-2 diabetic patients who were not diagnosed with diabetes and test the validity of the Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISK) in determining the risk of type-2 diabetes. Methods: First degree relatives of patients who were hospitalized in Izmir Katip Celebi University Ataturk Training and Research Hospital, who were not diagnosed with diabetes before, were included in this cross-sectional study. The sample of the research consisted of 200 people determined by power analysis. Data were collected by a structured question form and the FINRISK scale. Participants' height, weight, waist circumference were measured by the researcher, and venous fasting blood glucose (FBG) with Glycosylated Hemoglobin (HbA1c) were taken by the researcher. Results: The average age of the participants was 46.93 +/- 14.83 (18-86). It was determined that the vast majority of the individuals participating in the study were female (65%), 63% were married, 50.5% received high school or higher education, and 59% worked in an income-generating job. The findings was indicated that 41.5% of the participants were in the 'high-risk group' for type-2 diabetes according to the FINDRISK score scale. Sensitivity of FINDRISK score to FBG was 100% and specificity was 60%. Conclusion: As a result of findings in this study indicate that It was determined that the risk of DM was high in the first degree relatives of the patients hospitalized with Type-2 DM and the FINDRISK score scale was a good scale in predicting new asymptomatic Type 2 diabetes.
