Solving nonlinear random fractional partial differential equations using Elzaki-homotopy analysis method

    Merdan, Mehmet; Aydemir, Hilal

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to develop and apply the Elzaki-Homotopy Analysis Method (EHAM) as an efficient analytical technique for solving fractional-order partial differential equations (PDEs). By integrating the Elzaki transformation with the homotopy analysis framework, the study aims to obtain accurate and convergent analytical solutions for nonlinear and random fractional PDEs. Additionally, it seeks to evaluate the influence of stochastic parameters, where coefficients or initial conditions follow various probability distributions. The research further aims to compute the variance, expected value, and confidence intervals of the solutions and visualize the outcomes using MATLAB software.Design/methodology/approachIn this study, the Elzaki-Homotopy Analysis Method (EHAM) is employed by combining the Elzaki transformation with the homotopy analysis method to construct analytical solutions for fractional-order partial differential equations. The local fractional derivative is utilized to handle non-integer order behavior effectively. The proposed approach is applied to both linear and nonlinear equations under random conditions, where initial parameters and coefficients follow uniform, beta, normal, and gamma distributions. Statistical measures such as variance, expected value, and confidence intervals are calculated to analyze solution behavior. All computations and graphical representations are performed using MATLAB (2013a) to verify the method's accuracy and convergence.FindingsThe findings of this study demonstrate that the Elzaki-Homotopy Analysis Method (EHAM) provides highly accurate and rapidly convergent analytical solutions for fractional-order partial differential equations. The method effectively handles both linear and nonlinear problems involving random parameters. Statistical analysis of the obtained solutions reveals that the expected values and variances remain stable across different probability distributions, confirming the robustness of the approach. The convergence region can be easily controlled through the auxiliary parameters of the homotopy method. Comparisons with numerical results validate the reliability and efficiency of EHAM, establishing it as a powerful alternative to conventional numerical and perturbation techniques.Originality/valueThis study presents an innovative analytical framework for solving fractional-order partial differential equations using the Elzaki-Homotopy Analysis Method (EHAM). By integrating the Elzaki transformation with the homotopy analysis approach, the method efficiently addresses the complexities of nonlinear and stochastic systems. The inclusion of random variables with different probability distributions enhances the model's applicability to real-world phenomena. Analytical solutions are systematically derived, and their statistical properties-such as variance, expected value, and confidence intervals-are examined. Implemented through MATLAB (2013a), the results confirm EHAM's strong convergence, reliability, and computational efficiency, positioning it as a superior alternative to traditional numerical techniques.

The lived experience of individual stock investors during decision-making: a phenomenological perspective on investment psychology

    Soydas, Safak Sonmez

Purpose - This study explores how individual stock investors experience and interpret their decision-making processes beyond cognitive bias frameworks. It aims to reveal how investment decisions are shaped through cultural memory, moral values, social identity and digital environments, emphasizing the lived meanings investors attribute to risk, gain, and loss. Design/methodology/approach - A qualitative phenomenological design was employed. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 active individual stock investors in T & uuml;rkiye. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi's seven-step phenomenological method to identify the lived meaning structures underlying investment decision experiences. Findings - Investment decisions emerged as multidimensional experiences organized around four interrelated domains: cultural roots and collective economic memory, moral and religious tensions, social status and identity construction, and digitalization with emerging economic perceptions. Participants interpreted risk, gain, and investment outcomes through family narratives, moral and religious evaluations, identity-related concerns, and digitally mediated information environments rather than solely through rational calculations. Research limitations/implications - The findings are based on a limited qualitative sample and therefore cannot be statistically generalized. However, they contribute to a deeper theoretical understanding of investment behaviour by integrating cultural, moral, identity-related, and digital dimensions within a phenomenological behavioural finance perspective. Future research may build on these findings through mixed-method designs and cross-cultural comparisons. Practical implications - The findings support investor education programmes, decision-support systems and behavioural policy design by highlighting the experiential and meaning-based dimensions of investment decision-making. Social implications - The study demonstrates that investment decision-making is shaped by cultural values, moral interpretations, social identity processes and digitally mediated environments, suggesting that financial decisions are socially embedded rather than purely individual or rational. These findings may contribute to more socially sensitive financial literacy initiatives and policy development. Originality/value - This study extends behavioural finance by introducing a phenomenological lived-experience perspective, demonstrating that investment decision-making emerges through interacting cultural, moral, identity-related and digital meaning structures rather than solely through cognitive biases.

How does social capital affect the relationship between perception of diversity management and affective commitment?

Yilmaz Atik, Emine; Özbek, Mehmet Ferhat

PurposeThe aim of this study is to reveal the moderating effect of social capital in the relationship between employees' perceptions of diversity management and their affective commitment.Design/methodology/approachThe research hypotheses developed within the relevant literature framework are tested by using data that was obtained from the academic staff members who work at the Turkish universities.FindingsThe findings indicate that the relationship between perceptions of diversity management and affective commitment, considered in the dimensions of social capital such as participation in the local community, socio-proactivity, family and friendship relationships, tolerance for diversity, work relationships, quality of life and trust, vary according to strong and weak levels, supporting moderating hypotheses at various levels.Research limitations/implicationsOne of the significant limitations of the study is the reluctance of the sampled academicians to participate in a study related to diversity during the data collection process. Some academicians, in addition to express that they do not tolerate the diversity among employees within the organization, also decline to answer questions which are aimed at measuring these expressions.Practical implicationsThe study reveals that the perception of diversity management increases affective commitment. This finding suggests that managers should consider employees' perceptions of these policies rather than focusing solely on diversity management policies (Alshaabani and Rudnak, 2020: 2; Saleem et al., 2021: p. 1). In societies with collectivist cultures like T & uuml;rkiye, managers' practices become more important in strengthening employees' affective commitment (Wasti, 2000; Wasti, 2003). For employees to have positive perceptions of diversity management, managers should respect their identities, use inclusive language and form a positive diversity climate (Deepak and Perwez, 2019: p. 909). Furthermore, the audits evaluating diversity management practices should be conducted frequently (McKay and Avery, 2015: 334). However, the impact of employees' perceptions of diversity management on affective commitment may vary depending on employees' levels of social capital. Therefore, the organizations need to develop policies based on employees' levels of social capital. Orientation and mentoring programs should be implemented to facilitate the integration of employees with weak social relationships into the organization. The employees with strong social relationships should be guided toward social activities and club activities to capitalize on their strengths. The human resources department should develop some personalized programs for these employees.Social implicationsThe literature states that the perceptions and environment regarding diversity management have stronger relationships with attitudinal results rather than behavioral results (Holmes et al., 2020). The research findings support the literature in terms of showing that perception of diversity management have an impact on affective commitment. The collectivist cultural structure of the Turkish society (Sargut, 2001: p. 185) has an impact on the process of acquiring social capital. It is emphasized that the societal structure influences the behaviors exhibited by employees toward the organization. This study shows that the social capital of academics plays a partially moderating role in the relationship between perception of diversity management and affective commitment. When such dimensions of social capital as family and friendship relationships, socio-proactivity, work relations and tolerance for diversity are included in the relationship between the perception of diversity management and affective commitment, the direction and magnitude of the existing relationship change. Based on these results, it can be argued that their social capitals, which are formed based on secondary relationship types like friendship and acquaintance, contribute to the external social capital potential. In this aspect, the study is considered to contribute to the literature that highlights T & uuml;rkiye's high potential for external social capital (Bu & gbreve;ra, 1998; Oba and Semerci & ouml;z, 2004; & Ouml;zen and Aslan, 2006). In addition, it is fixed that socio-proactivity, family and friendship relationships, tolerance for diversity and work relationships, as the dimensions of social capital, have a negative moderating effect on the relationship between the perception of diversity management and affective commitment. These findings have determined the validity of the negative effects of social capital referred to as the dark side of social capital in the literature in the context of T & uuml;rkiye (Gargiolu and Bennasi, 1999; Gordon, 2020: 487; Lo and Fan, 2020: 27; Alcorta et al., 2020: 445).Originality/valueThe original value of this study is that the authors assume that the direction and magnitude of the relationship between the perception of diversity management and affective commitment are to be shaped according to the dimensions of social capital. In addition, it reveals that the affective commitment of employees can be shaped by social capital rather than perception of diversity management.

    Bingöl, Ozhan

PurposeThis study aims to propose a novel fractional-order neural network-based fixed-time sliding mode controller to address the challenges of chaotic satellite attitude control, synchronization and anti-synchronization. By integrating fractional-order dynamics and neural network-based estimation, the proposed approach enhances robustness and adaptability in stabilizing complex systems.Design/methodology/approachThe proposed control scheme introduces a novel sliding surface that leverages fractional calculus to improve convergence speed and control flexibility. A neural network is used to adaptively estimate unknown error dynamics, compensating for uncertainties in the system. The fixed-time stability property guarantees convergence within a predefined time, independent of initial conditions. Theoretical stability proofs and numerical simulations are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.FindingsThe results demonstrate that the proposed controller effectively stabilizes chaotic satellite attitude dynamics and ensures reliable synchronization and anti-synchronization. The approach exhibits strong robustness against system uncertainties and external disturbances while achieving fixed-time convergence.Originality/valueThis work advances the field by integrating fractional-order dynamics with a neural network-based adaptive mechanism in a fixed-time sliding mode control framework. The proposed method enhances convergence properties and robustness in controlling chaotic satellite attitude systems, providing a novel and effective solution for complex nonlinear dynamics.

Analysis of open channel flow with various layered vegetation using CFD, considering different near-wall treatment methods

    Sibil, Rahim

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of near-wall treatment approaches, which are crucial parameters in predicting the flow characteristics of open channels, and the influence of different vegetation covers in different layers.Design/methodology/approachAnsys Fluent, a computational fluid dynamics software, was used to calculate the flow and turbulence characteristics using a three-dimensional, turbulent (k-e realizable), incompressible and steady-flow assumption, along with various near-wall treatment approaches (standard, scalable, non-equilibrium and enhanced) in the vegetated channel. The numerical study was validated concerning an experimental study conducted in the existing literature.FindingsThe numerical model successfully predicted experimental results with relative error rates below 10%. It was determined that nonequilibrium wall functions exhibited the highest predictive success in experiment Run 1, standard wall functions in experiment Run 2 and enhanced wall treatments in experiment Run 3. This study has found that plant growth significantly alters open channel flow. In the contact zones, the velocities and the eddy viscosity are low, while in the free zones they are high. On the other hand, the turbulence kinetic energy and turbulence eddy dissipation are maximum at the solid-liquid interface, while they are minimum at free zones.Originality/valueThis is the first study, to the best of the author's knowledge, concerning the performance of different near-wall treatment approaches on the prediction of vegetation-covered open channel flow characteristics. And this study provides valuable insights to improve the hydraulic performance of open-channel systems.

Pala, Fahrettin; Erdogdu, Aylin; Ali, Muhammad; Alnori, Faisal; Barut, Abdulkadir

PurposeThe purpose of this study is twofold. First, this research explores the level of Islamic financial literacy of customers in the context of Islamic banking. Second, this study examines the determinants of customer adoption of Islamic banking in Turkey. Design/methodology/approachThis study gathered sample data from 409 participants determined using the purposive sampling method. In the study, first, the reflective measurement model is used to examine the reliability, validity and multicollinearity problems of the variables. Then, AMOS structural equation model (SEM) is used to reveal the relationship between Islamic financial literacy and Islamic banking services. Additionally, this study performed both descriptive and inferential analysis to understand customer literacy about Islamic banking and their adoption behavior of Islamic banking. FindingsThe results obtained from descriptive assessment indicate that Turkish customers of Islamic banking possess sufficient literacy about Islamic banking. Moreover, the results from SEM indicate that the adoption of Islamic banking by customers is significantly predicted by the role of Sharia Board management, Islamic banking and purpose of financial institution, religious factor and legitimacy of Islamic financial system. Research limitations/implicationsThis study focuses only on the level of knowledge and perceptions of customers who have accounts in Islamic banks or financial institutions in Turkey. It does not focus on the level of knowledge and perception of Muslims who do not have accounts in Islamic banks and financial institutions. Originality/valuePrevious studies on Islamic banking are mostly studies that investigate customers' perceptions of the Islamic banking system and why individuals prefer Islamic banks. In particular, studies examining the relationship between individuals' Islamic financial literacy level and Islamic banking preferences are limited. This study is considered to be an original study as it investigates the relationship between the Islamic financial literacy level of individuals and their adoption of Islamic banking services in Turkey.

Gergin, Ramazan Eyup; Peker, Iskender; Baki, Birdogan; Tuzkaya, Umut Rifat; Tanyas, Mehmet

Purpose Agricultural sector not only meets the nutritional requirements of all living creatures but also generates the primary source of the raw material provided by various branches of industry to fulfill their functions. It is of great importance to increase studies on oilseeds which have an important role in Turkey's agricultural products. They are grown in almost all of the country, which are vital for the nutrition and many sectors. The main purpose of the study is to offer an integrated approach to determine potential warehouse locations for oilseeds. Design/methodology/approach This is the first study that integrates Delphi, analytical hierarchical process (AHP), technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS), P-Median and Panel data analysis in a real case. This integrated approach consists of the following steps, respectively: (1) The criteria were determined by the Delphi method. (2) The weights of the criteria were calculated by AHP and the provinces with the highest oilseed warehouse potential in seven regions of Turkey were specified by TOPSIS. (3) Oilseed warehouse numbers and locations were obtained by P-Median. (4) In order to answer whether the distribution network is profitable in the future with the determined center locations, a forecast model based on panel data analysis was created. (5) Regional representatives were determined for 2030, and the distribution network was analyzed again. (6) The costs that arose in 2018 and 2030 were computed and compared by cost analysis. (7) The effect of the change in criteria weights on the alternative results was tested by scenario analysis. Findings The findings indicated that oilseed crop production potential and oilseed crop production area turned out to be the most important criteria. Furthermore, the results showed that this model is robust and suitable for warehouse location selection studies. Practical implications The study can serve as a guide for local and central policy makers with both the criteria it uses and the model it develops. Originality/value The main contribution of this study is that the integrated approach has been used for the first time in location selection in a real case.

Simultaneous design of morphing hexarotor and autopilot system by using deep neural network and SPSA

    Kose, Oguz; Oktay, Tugrul

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to optimize the simultaneous flight performance of a hexarotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) by using simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (i.e. SPSA), deep neural network and proportional integral derivative (i.e. PID) according to varying arm length (i.e. morphing). Design/methodology/approachIn this paper, proper PID gain coefficients and morphing ratio were obtained using the stochastic optimization method, also known as SPSA to maximize flight efficiency. Because it is difficult to establish an analytical connection between the morphing ratio and hexarotor moments of inertia, the deep neural network was used to obtain the moments of inertia according to the morphing ratio. By using SPSA and deep neural network, the best performance indexes were obtained and both longitudinal and lateral flight simulations were performed with the obtained data. FindingsWith SPSA, the best PID coefficients and morphing ratio are obtained for both longitudinal and lateral flight. Because the hexarotor solid body model changes according to the morphing ratio, the moment of inertia values used in the simulations also change. According to the morphing ratio, the moment of inertia values was obtained with the deep neural network over a created data set. Research limitations/implicationsIt takes a long time to obtain the morphing ratio suitable for the hexarotor model and the PID gain coefficients suitable for this morphing ratio. However, this situation can be overcome with the proposed SPSA. In addition, it takes a long time to obtain the appropriate moments of inertia according to the morphing ratio. However, in this case, it was overcome using the deep neural network. Practical implicationsDetermining the morphing ratio and PID gain coefficients using the optimization method, as well as determining the moments of inertia using the deep neural network, is very useful as it can increase the efficiency of hexarotor flight and flight efficiently with different arm lengths. With the proposed method, the hexarotor design performance criteria (i.e. rise time, settling time and overshoot) values were significantly improved compared to similar studies. Social implicationsDetermining the hexarotor flight parameters using SPSA and deep neural network provides advantages in terms of time, cost and applicability. Originality/valueThe hexarotor flight efficiency is improved with the proposed SPSA and deep neural network approaches. In addition, the desired flight parameters can be obtained more quickly and reliably with the proposed approaches. The design performance criteria were also improved, enabling the hexarotor UAV to follow the given trajectory in the best way and providing convenience for end users. SPSA was preferred because it converged faster than other methods. While other methods perform 2n operations per iteration, SPSA only performs two operations. To obtain the moment of inertia, many physical parameter values of the UAV are required in the existing methods. In the proposed method, by creating a date set, only arm length and moment of inertia were estimated without the need to obtain physical parameters with the deep neural network structure.

How human capital affects labor income share at the sectoral level?: Evidence from the EU-13 countries and the UK

    Çelik, Orkun

Purpose The author investigates the effects of human capital on labor income share in the 15 sectors of the European Union (EU)-13 countries and the United Kingdom (UK) over the period 2008-2015. Design/methodology/approach The author employs pooled ordinary least squares (OLS) estimation with panel data, using the EU KLEMS database. Findings The results show that when education level increases, labor income share increases and gender-based labor income share differentials decrease. Return to education is higher in qualitative sectors in contrast with the other sectors. Moreover, there are gender-based labor income share differentials at the sectoral level. These differentials are higher in nonqualitative sectors, while they are relatively lower in qualitative sectors. Research limitations/implications The biggest limitation of the study is that the data range cannot be expanded because of the database. The author is of opinion that the empirical findings will guide to policy makers in terms of wage setting. Originality/value The expected contribution of this study to the literature is to investigate the effect of human capital on labor income share at the sectoral level for the EU-13 countries and the UK. As far as the author knows, there is no study which investigates this topic at the sectoral level such a comprehensive, in the literature.

Simultaneous autonomous system and powerplant design for morphing quadrotors

Sahin, Huseyin; Kose, Oguz; Oktay, Tugrul

Purpose This study aims to optimize autonomous performance (i.e. both longitudinal and lateral) and endurance of the quadrotor type aerial vehicle simultaneously depending on the autopilot gain coefficients and battery weight. Design/methodology/approach Quadrotor design processes are critical to performance. Unmanned aerial vehicle durability is an important performance parameter. One of the factors affecting durability is the battery. Battery weight, energy capacity and discharge rate are important design parameters of the battery. In this study, proper autopilot gain coefficients and battery weight are obtained by using a stochastic optimization method named as simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA). Because there is no direct correlation between battery weight and battery energy density, artificial neural network (ANN) is benefited to obtain battery energy density corresponding to resulted battery weight found from SPSA algorithm. By using the SPSA algorithm optimum performance index is obtained, then obtained data is used for longitudinal and lateral autonomous flight simulations. Findings With SPSA, the best proportional integrator and derivative (PID) coefficients and battery weight, energy efficiency and endurance were obtained in case of morphing. Research limitations/implications It takes a long time to find the most suitable battery values depending on quadrotor endurance. However, this situation can be overcome with the proposed SPSA. Practical implications It is very useful to determine quadrotor endurance, PID coefficients and morphing rate using the optimization method. Social implications Determining quadrotor endurance, PID coefficients and morphing rate using the optimization method provides advantages in terms of time, cost and practicality. Originality/value The proposed method improves quadrotor endurance. In addition, with the SPSA optimization method and ANN, the parameters required for endurance will be obtained faster and more securely. In addition, the energy density according to the battery weight also contributes to the clean environment and energy efficiency.

Assessing the feasibility of blockchain technology in industries: evidence from Turkey

Erol, Ismail; Ar, Ilker Murat; Ozdemir, Ali Ihsan; Peker, Iskender; Asgary, Ali; Medeni, Ihsan Tolga; Medeni, Tunc

Purpose The objective of this study is to assess quantitatively how feasible blockchain is for various industries, such as logistics and supply chain, health, energy, finance, automotive, pharmaceutical and agriculture and food using a comprehensive list of indicators. Design/methodology/approach A decision aid was applied to the problem of identifying the feasibility of blockchain in Turkish industries. To this end, first, a set of indicators was identified. Then, the fuzzy AHP and fuzzy TOPSIS were utilized to assess the feasibility comparatively using the data gathered from a group of experts. Finally, a scenario analysis was conducted to ensure the consistency of our evaluation. Findings The findings of this study suggest that comparatively, logistics and supply chain, finance and health industries are the most feasible industries for blockchain. This study further suggests that blockchain is the least feasible for the automotive industry compared to the rest of the identified industries. Research limitations/implications It is cumbersome to find out the respondents who have sufficient knowledge of both blockchain and the identified industries. Even if we took the utmost care in identifying the right respondents, we limited our search to the biggest industrial hubs of Turkey. Practical implications The findings of this research may help various decision-makers employed in governments, conglomerates, software and consulting firms and national research institutions make more informed decisions and allocate their resources more effectively. Originality/value To this date, the current studies have solely investigated possible research opportunities in blockchain and demonstrated several blockchain applications in stand-alone cases. To the best of our knowledge, however, no single study exists that evaluates the feasibility of blockchain comparatively and holistically among a group of industries using various indicators.
