Maden, Nafiz; Öztürk, Serkan
In this paper, we analyze the relationships between the seismic b-values, Bouguer gravity and heat flow data in the Eastern Anatolia region of Turkey. For this purpose, spatial distributions of b-value, Bouguer gravity and heat flow have been presented for different depths and locations. In distinction to previous studies which have used only two parameters (gravity and seismic b-value or heat flow and seismic b-value), we have combined seismic b-values, Bouguer gravity and heat flow data to determine the new results on the active tectonics of the Eastern Anatolia region. Our analysis shows that there are significant and robust correlations amidst the heat flow data, Bouguer gravity anomaly and seismic b-values. The crustal structure is thick in areas where the large negative gravity anomalies and low b-values are observed. On the contrary, the regions with positive gravity anomalies and high b-values are likely to be associated with magma chambers or crustal low-velocity zones. We also provide some evidence suggesting that high b-values and high heat flow values can be related to the magmatic activities beneath the volcanic chain in the Eastern Pontide orogenic belt. Consequently, we have reached some conclusions for the Eastern Anatolia region: (1) The Moho to surface is rather thick and earthquakes are relatively smaller beneath the volcanic chain where the high heat flow values are observed, (2) a southward subduction model could have existed for the development of the Pontides during the late Mesozoic–Cenozoic era, (3) hot and unstable mantle lid zones or a lithosphere deprived of mantle under the study region is much more plausible, (4) a southward movement of the subduction plate and a northward extension of the Black Sea increase the state of stress along the trench axis and decrease the b-value, and (5) these movements may load the stress energy to the fault zones, thereby causing the catastrophic earthquakes in the Eastern Anatolia region.
- MakaleYalnız künye2015Gamma ray spectrometry for recognition of hydrothermal alteration zones related to a low sulfidation epithermal gold mineralization (eastern Pontides, NE Türkiye)
Maden, Nafiz; Akaryali, Enver
This study presents an interpretation of radiospectrometric and magnetic data of Arzular mineralization site, which is one of the best examples for epithermal gold deposits located in the southern zone of the Eastern Pontides (NE Türkiye). Potassium is generally the most useful pathfinder element for gold mineralization zones because of its high level in altered rock surrounding the deposits. Where gold is hosted within quartz veins, typically the vein is low in the radioelements, but the hydrothermally altered host rocks will usually have a distinct radioelement signature useful for exploration. In this study, magnetic, susceptibility and radiospectrometric survey data radiometric signatures associated with the host rocks favorable for the mineralization, enhancing techniques such as the ratio maps as well as potassium (%K), equivalent thorium (eTh ppm) and equivalent uranium (eU ppm) maps were utilized. Our analysis showed that the gold mineralization associated with the alteration is significantly related to increase in potassium, due to adularia, a low T K-feldspar, and decreases in uranium and thorium due to the hydrothermal alteration and magmatic intrusion processes during the regional tectonic activities.

Maden, Nafiz
Geothermal energy, which is a renewable energy source, can be used to heat buildings or generate electricity and does not contribute to air pollution when used properly, and it is heat continuously produced inside the earth that generates geological phenomena on a planetary scale. Central Anatolia is a triangular region which is limited by North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) to the north, East Anatolian Fault Zone (EAFZ) to the east, Dead sea FZ and Cyprus FZ to the south. The tectonic structure of the Cappadocia region is composed of NW trending Salt Lake Fault Zone extending approximately 220 km in length, Salanda fault zone extending 140 km, and NE trending Central Anatolian Fault zone more than 700 km in length. There are 82 geothermal regions having 171 sources with low and high temperatures due to the young volcanism and tectonic activities in this region. These geothermal regions caused by fault and fracture zones extending to the mantle parallel to the tectonic zones of the region and are situated on the areas having low Curie, high heat flow values. The Curie point depth, heat flow and geothermal gradient values determined from geophysical data of the region are correlated with tectonics and geothermal potential of the region. While the minimum crustal thickness is 38 km, the maximum crustal thickness is 41 km in Mt. Hasan and Mt. Erciyes. The Curie point depth value is computed as 13.7 km determined from magnetic anomaly data of the region. The geothermal gradient and heat flow values are estimated to be 42.3 °Ckm-1, 88.8 mWm-2, respectively. Geothermal systems and reservoir temperature of geothermal sources should be understood clearly to provide sustainability of the project with respect to the economical conditions. Various geothermometers methods have been used to determine the reservoir temperature in order to estimate the field of usage of the thermal water before the drilling stage because of the high price of the borehole. Silica geothermometers method applied to the SiO2 content of the sources gives the best information about the reservoir temperature. The maximum temperatures and depth to reservoir of the geothermal sources located in the Kayseri region are estimated as 131.8 °C, 1.14 km, respectively, in Kayseri region. It is concluded from these values that the Cappadocia region has very high geothermal potential caused by tectonic activities after the Late Triassic and partial melting of the lower crust.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2013Geothermal structure of the eastern Black Sea basin and the eastern Pontides orogenic belt: Implications for subduction polarity of Tethys oceanic lithosphere
Maden, Nafiz
The numerical results of thermal modeling studies indicate that the lithosphere is cold and strong beneath the Black Sea basin. The thermal lithospheric thickness increases southward from the eastern Pontides orogenic belt (49.4 km) to Black Sea basin (152.2 km). The Moho temperature increases from 367 C in the trench to 978 C in the arc region. The heat flow values for the Moho surface change between 16.4 mW m-2 in the Black Sea basin and 56.9 mW m-2 in the eastern Pontides orogenic belt. Along the southern Black Sea coast, the trench region has a relatively low geothermal potential with respect to the arc and back-arc region. The numerical studies support the existence of southward subduction beneath the Pontides during the late Mesozoic-Cenozoic.

- MakaleYalnız künye2012Two-Dimensional Geothermal Modelling Along the Central Pontides Magmatic Arc: Implications for the Geodynamic Evolution of Northern Turkey
Maden, Nafiz
The Pontides, which can be divided tectonically into three main segments as Eastern, Central, and Western Pontides, is one of the most complex geodynamic settings within the Alpine belt. The Central Pontides, where the Eastern and Western Pontides met and formed a tectonic knot, represent an amalgamated tectonic mosaic consisting of remnants of oceanic, continental, and island arc segments. Subduction polarity, which is responsible for the formation of the Pontides, is still under debate because of limited geological, geophysical, and geochemical data. Two-dimensional (2-D) thermal modelling studies along the Central Pontides magmatic arc (Northern Turkey), Sakarya and Ki{dotless}rşehir continents are investigated in order to delineate the crustal thermal structure and subduction polarity. The obtained numerical results indicate that arc and back-arc regions are hot because of the cooling effects of a subducting plate. Moho temperatures in the investigated region are found between 992°C in the south (back-arc) and 415°C in the north (arc). Moreover, mantle heat flow values vary from 57.2 mWm -2 in the south (back-arc) to 34.7 mWm -2 in the north (arc). It is shown from this study that the Eurasia plate had moved from north to south under the Anatolia plate along the south Black Sea coast.

Maden, Nafiz
The eastern Pontides orogenic belt is one of the most complex geodynamic settings in the Alpine-Himalayan belt due to the lack of systematical geological and geophysical data. In this study, 1D crustal structure and P-wave velocity distribution obtained from gravity modeling and seismological data in the area has been used for the development of the thermal model of the eastern Pontides orogenic belt. The computed temperature-depth profiles suggest a temperature of 590 ± 60°C at a Moho depth of 35 km indicates the presence of a brittle-ductile transition zone. This temperature value might be related to water in the subducted crust of the Tethys oceanic lithosphere. The Curie temperature depth value of 29 km, which may correspond to the crustal magma chambers, is found 5-7 km below the Moho depth. Surface heat flow density values vary from 66.5 and 104.7 mW m -2. High mantle heat flow density value of 48 mW m -2 is obtained for the area should be related to melting of the lithospheric mantle caused by upwelling of asthenosphere.

Maden, Nafiz
Curie-point depth and heat flow values of the Erciyes region are determined to identify the thermal regime of the Central Anatolia by applying the spectral analysis method to the magnetic anomaly data. To compute the spectrum of the data, the magnetic anomaly of the region is transformed into 2-D Fourier domain to attain the average Curie depth. This method is useful in determining the top boundary of magnetic anomaly sources and reveals the Curie depth as 13.7 km in the study area. The obtained results imply a high thermal gradient (42.3°C km-1) and corresponding heat flow values (88.8 mWm-2) in the research area. Using the temperature value measured at borehole drilled by the General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration of Turkey (MTA), the values for the thermal gradient and heat flow value were computed as 50.7°C km-1, 106.5 mWm-2. From the heat flow value, the Curie-point depth was determined as 11.4 km in this region. It is concluded from the obtained values that the region has very high geothermal potential caused by partial melting of the lower crust.

The Eastern Pontide orogenic belt is divided into three subzones (northern, southern and axial zones) based on present lithologies and facies associations. NE–SW-, NW–SE- and E–W-trending fault systems, which play an important role in palaeotectonics and neotectonics of the Eastern Pontides, separate these zones. Three different methods were used to estimate the Moho depth from observed gravity value, namely (i) empirical relationship between Moho depth and Bouguer anomaly; (ii) spectral analysis of the radial wave number and; (iii) by the gravity inversion method. Power spectrum, a statistical approach, is a widely used technique to determine the depth of geological sources successfully. The empirical linear relations between the Bouguer anomalies and seismically determined crustal thicknesses have been used to compute depths to the Conrad and Moho discontinuities, which are consistent with the average depths obtained from the power spectrum method. The crustal structure was also determined from the inversion of a Bouguer anomaly profile along longitude 39°. Gravity inversion results are consistent with those obtained from the empirical relations and power spectrum methods. We calculated the maximum crustal thickness of 43.8 km in the studied region by using the gravity inversion method, which also showed that crustal thickness increases from north to south.

The Eastern Pontide Orogenic Belt is one of the most complex geodynamic settings within the Alpine belt. Subduction polarity, which is responsible for the formation of the Eastern Pontide Magmatic Arc, is still under debate because of limited geological, geophysical and geochemical data. This orogenic belt is mainly divided into three subzones depending on lithological characteristics and facies changes as in Northern, Southern and Axial Zones from North to South. These zones are separated from each other by near-vertical faults that display the block-faulting tectonic style of this belt. In this study, the tectonic and crustal structure of the Eastern Pontides, which as yet have not been prospected by using geophysical data, has been investigated with potential field data. The horizontal gradient map obtained from gravity data shows a number of steep and gentle lineaments. It seems that these lineaments E-W, NE and NW-trending correspond to major structural zones of continental crust. Additionally, The Moho depth and Curie point depth variation maps of the Eastern Pontide Orogenic Belt have been computed with the power spectral method of the radial wavenumber carried out by using the fast Fourier transform method. As a result of this method, we estimated that the depths of the Moho and Curie point varied between 29.0 ± 1.2-47.2 ± 1.9 km and 14.3 ± 0.7-27.9 ± 1.4 km, respectively. Our findings indicate that the Moho depth generally increases from north to south in the region. However, the Curie point depth level within the crust has an undulating surface, not a horizontal one.

The Pontides can be divided tectonically into three main sectors: Eastern, Central, and Western Pontides. Each of these represents an amalgamated tectonic mosaic consisting of remnants of oceanic, continental, and island arc segments. The Eastern and the Western Pontides meet in the Central Pontides, where they are structurally mixed and form a tectonic knot. The Central Pontides of northern Turkey is one of the best exposed segments of the southern margin of Eurasia adjacent to the Tethys Ocean. The study area also extends to parts of the Sakarya and Ki{dotless}rşehir continents. Magnetic spectral analysis, which has been used to estimate the Curie point depths and heat flow values, is employed to identify the thermal regime of the Central Pontides. The magnetic data of the region are separated into five subregions and the power spectra of each region is achieved by using 2D Fourier transform method to attain the average curie depth. The curie depth values changes across the studied region from 14.8 km in the south to 21.8 km in the north. The obtained results imply a high thermal gradient (39.2 °Ckm-1) and corresponding heat flow values (94.1 mWm-2) in the south of the research area. The northern part of the study area displays a low thermal gradient (26.6 °Ckm-1) and low heat flow value (63.9 mWm-2), corresponding to the Central Pontides consisting of accreted oceanic crustal material. The determined values show the heat flow decrease within the accretionary prism toward the island arc-like Pontides.

Bektaş, Osman; Eyüboǧlu, Yener; Maden, Nafiz
The dextral North Anatolian Fault System (NAFS) extends for well over 1000 km from the compressive tectonic domain of eastern Anatolia into the broad and diverse tectonic domain of the western Anatolian, Marmara and Aegean regions. These different tectonic regimes are characterized by a narrow deformation zone in the east and a much broader deformation zone with multiple sub-parallel fault zones in the west. The spatial and temporal distribution of large historical and modern earthquakes (Mw>5) shows two distinctive macro-seismic zones in the eastern and western parts of the NAFS. The eastern macro-seismic zone, between the towns of Erzincan and Bolu, has produced a successive linear earthquake series parallel to the fault system over the last 500 years, suggesting that stress transfer along the fault occurred in a manner of 'Static Coulomb failure stress changes' through the entire elastic crust. In contrast, the western macro-seismic zone of the NAFS, in the Marmara region, has produced successive earthquake pairs on the parallel faults, implying 'dynamic stress changes', involving large-scale flow in the aseismic lower crust and the mantle.

The Eastern Pontide magmatic arc (NE Turkey) was rifted by the polyphase extensional tectonic regimes in the Early Jurassic. While alternated volcanics and siliciclastic sedimentary rocks accumulated during the episodic tectonic subsidences, thermal subsidence is manifested by sedimentation of the red pelagic limestones of the Ammonitico Rosso during the Pliensbachian. The trends of the Liassic basins extending in NW-SE, E-W, NE-SW directions coincide with the gravity and magnetic lineament anomalies and corresponding fault zones that are responsible for the paleotectonic and neotectonic evolutions of the Eastern Pontide magmatic arc. These mutual relationships suggest that the faults making up the architecture of the Liassic basins might have operated during the Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic times in different manners. Neptunian dikes, filled by the early rift siliciclastic and following fossiliferous red pelagic limestone implying the repeated extensional tectonic regimes, are also parallel to the main extensions of the Liassic basins. The poles of the contemporaneous neptunian dikes suggesting two or three extensional conjugate fracture systems are in accordance with the dip directions of the rift sediments accumulated in the same conjugate normal fault systems. Assuming that the Liassic basins with Ammonitico Rosso are coeval, multi-armed rift basins might have opened by the mode of the three-directional extension rather than reactivation of faults in the different times.
