A new species, Dicranolasma gumushanensissp. n., is described from the Gümüşhane Province of the northeastern region of Turkey, based on morphological and genetic evidence. The newly described species differs from similar species within the genus, particularly due to morphological characteristics such as the structure of the chelicerae and genitalia, and its molecular characteristics. A detailed description and diagnostic characteristics of the new species are provided, in addition to images of its body in dorsal view, chelicerae, pedipalps and genitalia. The nuclear (28S rRNA) and mitochondrial (COI) gene regions of the species were sequenced, revealing its phylogenetic relationships within the genus Dicranolasma. http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:1C3512F0-4ED4-4B60-A0FC-65EF62173573.
- MakaleYalnız künye2026Nutritional value, heavy metal contamination and health risk assessment of Phalangium opilio Linnaeus, 1758 as a potential edible arachnid
Gürmeriç, Hüseyin Ender; Kurt, Pınar; Ürkek, Bayram
Edible insects and arachnids have increasingly been recognised as alternative food sources. The aim of the study was to evaluate the harvestman species Phalangium opilio (P. opilio) Linnaeus, 1758 as a new edible species. In this research, some chemical properties, fatty acid and mineral composition of the P. opilio were investigated. Additionally, the heavy metal contamination and its health risk assessment were evaluated. The fat and protein contents of the samples were 1.18% and 14.07%, respectively. The P. opilio had unsaturated fatty acids such as myristoleic, palmitoleic, linoleic and oleic acids. The P. opilio was analyzed for K, Mg, Na, Ca, Fe, Zn, Al, Mn, Se contents, estimated daily intake and contributions to the recommended daily mineral intake were calculated. The heavy metals detected in the P. opilio were Cu, Ni, Cd, Pb, As, Cr, Co and Ag. The Cd had the highest target hazard quotient value (2.16). The hazard index value of the P. opilio was 3.32 and it had a potential health risk level. Consequently, although P. opilio exhibited favourable nutritional properties, the THQ value for Cd and the cumulative HI value exceeded the recommended safety threshold, indicating a potential non-carcinogenic health risk associated with its consumption. Accordingly, considering the detected heavy metal levels and associated health risk indices, the consumption of wild-collected P. opilio should be approached with caution. © Hüseyin Ender Gürmeriç et al., 2026. - MakaleYalnız künye2026First molecular data based on the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene for the endemic harvestman Mediostoma izmiricum Snegovaya, Kurt and Yağmur (Opiliones: Nemastomatidae) from Türkiye, with insights into the phylogenetic relationships of the genus
Kurt, Pınar
Mediostoma izmiricum Snegovaya, Kurt and Yağmur, is a species of the family Nemastomatidae Simon, and is endemic to Türkiye. To date, there is no molecular data available for the 16S rRNA gene region for this species or its genus, which limits our knowledge of its phylogenetic position. The 16S rRNA gene region of this species was analysed for the first time, yielding a sequence length of 465 bp. Bayesian inference (BI) and maximum likelihood (ML) phylogenetic trees were subsequently constructed based on these data, revealing the phylogenetic position of both the species and its genus.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025First Molecular Data for the Genus Kovalius (Opiliones: Sclerosomatidae: Leiobuninae) and their Phylogenetic Relationships; [Kovalius (Opiliones: Sclerosomatidae: Leiobuninae) Cinsinin İlk Moleküler Verileri ve Filogenetik İlişkileri]
Kurt, Pınar; Yildirim Doğan, Nalan
Kovalius (Opiliones: Sclerosomatidae: Leiobuninae) is a small genus of harvestmen described by Tchemeris, 2023. The first description of Kovalius logunovi was made from Russia and it was subsequently recorded from Türkiye on the basis of the morphological data. The use of morphological data alone for the identification of taxa and determination of their relationships may lead to limitations and difficulties in some cases. As a result, the use of molecular data in addition to the morphological data in the identification of new taxa and determination of phylogenetic relationships increases the reliability of studies. In this study, the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene region of the Kovalius logunovi species was examined for the first time and a sequence of approximately 408 bp was obtained. Based on these data, the phylogenetic relationships of the species with similar species were revealed.
