Geochemical Properties of Pleistocene-aged Terrace Deposit of the Ankara Stream

Eker Saydam, Çiğdem; Gümüş, Mustafa Kemal

The study aims to investigate geochemical properties, chemical weathering, sedimentary-cycle history and sediment provenance of the Ankara Stream Pleistoceneaged terrace deposit. The CIA, PIA and ICV values of the examined samples have been determined as 58.6, 58.7 and 1.58, respectively. The terrace deposits are exposed to the simple sedimentary cycling history, which indicates that geochemical compositions of sediments were controlled by the composition of source materials. The Al2O3/TiO2, La/Sc, Co/Th and Th/Sc ratios of the investigated samples range from 8-21, 2.52-4.4, 1.50-2.19 and 0.70-1.03, respectively. Thus, the deposits have negative Eu anomaly and high LREE/HREE ratios. Finally, likely low-to-moderate degrees of chemical weathering of these deposits show an increase tectonic activity and erosion in the studied area. Terrace deposits are derived from particle to intermediate or felsic–mafic sources and the deposits are chemically immature.

Harmful Element Content Of The Ankara Stream Bed Sedıments

    Eker Saydam, Çiğdem; Özay, Özkan

The study aimed to interpret the abundanceand provenance of harmful elements in the bed sediments of the Ankara Stream. Average Zn, Ni, Cu, Pb, As, Co and Cd values in the Ankara Stream sediments are calculated as 111, 65.7, 32, 17.6, 16.4, 16.1 and 0.2 ppm, respectively. The Al/Si ratio of the examined samples exhibit a positive correlation with Cu, Pb, Ni and Co, and TOC content of the examined samples shows a positive correlation with Cu, Pb ve Zn. The EF and Igeovalues indicated that the sediments were significantly polluted by As and Ni and generally moderately polluted by Co, Zn, and Cu, and locally moderately polluted by Pb and Cd.Pb anthropogenic contribution was estimated at an average of >100% in the sediments. Therefore, Pb, Cu, Zn, and Co elements are generally geologically sourced and there is locally an anthropogenic contribution. Cadmium is mostly anthropogenic but partly a geological contribution, but it is thought that Ni and As are completely anthropogenic sourced.
