An effective, simple, low cost and accurate sorption-spectrophotometric platform for the extractions and subsequent quantifications of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions in food and environmental samples has been described in this dissertation. The separation and preconcentration of the analyte ions were accomplished by solid phase extraction method based on the adsorption of their N-(4-methylphenyl)-2-{[(4-phenyl-5-pyridin-4-yl-4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)thio] acetyl} hydrazinecarbothioamide (MFPTAHK) complex on Amberlite XAD-8 resin in a mini column. The developed method was systematically investigated in different set of experimental parameters that influence the separation and preconcentration of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions. The precision of the method was determined by reproducibility studies and expressed as relative standard deviations (RSD %) which were less than 4% for both analyte ions. The limits of detections (LODs) for Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions based on the three times the standard deviation of the blanks (N:10) were found to be 0. 31 ?g L-1 and 0. 86 ?g L-1, respectively. The developed SPE procedure was utilized for the simultaneous extraction and determinations of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions levels in rice, cracked wheat and red lentil as food samples and various water samples.

Serencam, Huseyin; Ozdes, Duygu; Duran, Celal; Tufekci, Mehmet

The abundantly available industrial waste product Morus alba L. pomace (MAP) is one of the cost-effective biosorbent for removal of metal ions from aqueous solutions. Hence, in the present study, we aimed to test the ability of MAP to remove Cd(II) ions through batch biosorption process. Firstly, MAP was characterized using several techniques, and then the influence of various experimental parameters such as initial pH of the aqueous solution, initial Cd(II) concentration, contact time, MAP concentration, and temperature were evaluated upon the biosorption process. It was found that the maximum uptake of Cd(II) ions occurred at initial pH 6.0 and optimum contact time was observed as 60 min. Cd(II) ions adsorption on MAP analyzed by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models and the maximum monolayer biosorption capacity of MAP was found to be 21.69 mg g-1 by using the Langmuir isotherm model. The pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, and intraparticle diffusion models were employed to describe the biosorption kinetics. In order to investigate the thermodynamic properties of the biosorption process, the changes in the Gibbs free energy (â̂†G), enthalpy (â̂†H), and entropy (â̂†S) were also evaluated and it has been concluded that the process was feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic in the temperature range of 5-40 C.

Physicochemical characteristics of a novel activated carbon produced from tea industry waste

Gundogdu, Ali; Duran, Celal; Senturk, H. Basri; Soylak, Mustafa; Imamoglu, Mustafa; Onal, Yunus

Tonnes of waste are generated during tea production in Turkey, one of the black tea producing countries in the world. These wastes are not used for any purposes throughout industrial sector. The objective of this study is to bring in economic value to waste materials by producing activated carbons from wastes of a tea plant and to characterize their physicochemical properties. Three types of activated carbons were produced by chemical activation using zinc chloride from tea industry wastes (TIW). Mesoporous structure and surface area rise as the ratio of ZnCl2/TIW increases. When the ratios of ZnCl2/TIW were selected as 1/2:1, 1:1, and 2:1, mesoporous activated carbons are found in the percentages of 10.9%, 39.9% and 77.7% with BET surface areas of 706, 1066 and 1141 m(2) g(-1), respectively. The resultant activated carbons were characterized by analyses of proximate-ultimate, FT-IR, SEM, TGA, methylene blue-iodine numbers, and surface functional groups. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Sivrikaya, Sezen; Albayrak, Sinem; Imamoglu, Mustafa; Gundogdu, Ali; Duran, Celal; Yildiz, Hulya

The present study has been performed to examine the adsorption ability of novel sorbent dehydrated hazelnut husk carbon (DHHC) towards Ni(II) ions from aqueous solution using the batch adsorption technique. The effective factors such as initial pH of the aqueous solution, contact time, initial Ni(II) concentration, adsorbent dosage, and temperature were investigated. The studies were also conducted to understand the effect of some co-existing ions which may be present in aqueous solutions. DHHC showed good adsorption potential for Ni(II) ions. The optimum initial pH value was selected as 5.0. The experimental data fitted well to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Among the kinetic models tested for the adsorption of Ni(II), the pseudo-second-order model showed a good fit of the kinetic data. The thermodynamic parameters including the Gibbs free energy (ΔG), enthalpy (ΔH), and entropy (ΔS) changes indicated that the adsorption of Ni(II) ions onto DHHC was feasible, spontaneous, and exothermic in the temperature range of 25-55°C. The results of this study showed the effectiveness and feasibility of DHHC for the removal of Ni(II) ions from aqueous solution.

Adsorption of Phenol from Aqueous Solution on a Low-Cost Activated Carbon Produced from Tea Industry Waste: Equilibrium, Kinetic, and Thermodynamic Study

Gundogdu, Ali; Duran, Celal; Senturk, H. Basri; Soylak, Mustafa; Ozdes, Duygu; Serencam, Huseyin; Imamoglu, Mustafa

The ability of activated carbon which was produced by chemical activation using zinc chloride from tea industry wastes (TIWAC) to adsorb phenol molecules from aqueous solution was tested by equilibrium, kinetic, and thermodynamic parameters. Phenol adsorption on TIWAC took place with a high yield at pH values in the range 4 to 8. The optimum contact period was observed as 4.0 h and from the adsorption graphs plotted as a function of time; it was established that phenol adsorption on TIWAC conformed more to a pseudosecond-order kinetic model. Additionally, it was determined that the adsorption rate is controlled by intraparticle diffusion as well as film diffusion. It was established that phenol adsorption on TIWAC can be better defined by the Langmuir adsorption model and its adsorption capacity was 142.9 mg.g(-1) from the linear Langmuir equation. Temperature had an adverse effect on adsorption yield, and hence, the adsorption process was exothermic in our case. Moreover, increasing electrolyte concentration in the medium has a positive effect on adsorption yield. From the data obtained, it was concluded that the removal of phenol from aqueous solution by TIWAC produced from tea industry wastes with a very low cost took place with an extremely high performance.

Kinetics and isotherm analysis of basic dyes adsorption onto almond shell (Prunus dulcis) as a low cost adsorbent

Duran, Celal; Ozdes, Duygu; Gundogdu, Ali; Senturk, Hasan Basri

The feasibility of using an agricultural byproduct, almond shell (Prunus dulcis), as an adsorbent in removal of basic dyes, namely, methylene blue (MB), methyl violet (MV), and toluidine blue O (TB), were evaluated in a batch adsorption process. The adsorption characteristics of MB, MV, and TB onto almond shell (AS) were investigated with respect to the changes in initial pH of dye solutions, contact time, initial dye concentration, and temperature. The dye adsorption equilibria were rapidly attained after 30 min of contact time. The adsorption kinetics were analyzed using pseudofirst-order, pseudosecond-order, Elovich, and intraparticle diffusion models and the adsorption data were well described by the pseudosecond-order model. The equilibrium adsorption data were interpreted in terms of the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherm models. The monolayer adsorption capacity of AS was found to be 51.02 mg·g-1 for MB, 76.34 mg·g-1 for MV, and 72.99 mg·g-1 for TB by using the Langmuir model equation. The thermodynamic parameters proved that the present adsorption process was feasible, spontaneous and endothermic in nature in the temperature range of (5 to 40) °C.
