Political Polarization, Income Inequality and Government

    Keyifli, Nazlı; Akdede, Sacit Hadi

This paper empirically investigates the determinants of political polarization. Size of government and income distribution are the main independent variables along with other controlling variables. The statistical analysis uses OLS and 2SLS methodogies. The sample of countries includes 61 countries and time period spans between 1990 and 2015. Results of regressions analysis indicate that increased income inequality increases political polarization. Political polarization is derived from World Values Survey ( WVS). It is measured as standard deviation of responses to the question “what is role for government”. In addition, results of our empirical analysis indicates that increased governemt size reduces the political polarization. The paper explains the links for these findings.

Political Polarization and Size of Government; [Politik Kutuplaşma ve Devletin Ekonomik Boyutu]

    Keyifli, Nazlı; Akdede, Sacit Hadi

In this study, it empirically examines the impact of economic and political determinants on the economic size of the government. Political polarization is taken as the variable of interest, along with other control variables. Statistical analysis was carried out using the Ordinary Least Squares and Second Stage Least Squares methods. The scope of the paper includes 61 countries, and the time interval is between 1990 and 2015. The results of the regression analysis show that the share of public consumption spending in national income in countries where political polarization is high is declining. In addition, the increase in levels of ethnic fracturalization, democracy and government fractionalization has an increasing effect on the share of public consumption spending in national income. The study provides descriptive linkages among findings.

Tax burden, political polarization and social diversity

    Keyifli, Nazlı; Akdede, Sacit Hadi

In many countries in the world over the last 150 years, the tax burden has expanded significantly. In this respect, the tax size and scope of the governments are a theme that repeats itself in both public and public and academic discussions. In this study, the factors affecting the tax burden of the government (economic, political) in the 80 countries on the database of the World Bank were examined. In the study which used the 5-year averages of 1990-2015 years, the effect of economic and political factors on the tax burden was tested using the OLS and 2SLS methods. According to empirical findings, political polarization decreases the tax burden and that heterogeneous societies are less willing to participate in the financing of public services.
