Institutional Determinants of Regional Poverty in Turkey: Evidence from Advanced Causality Analysis

    Çiçen, Yıldırım Beyazıt

Poverty continues to be one of the major issues in Turkey, as in many other countries, with a large portion of the population – especially in rural areas – living below the poverty line. Those living in poverty have limited access to key public services such as education, healthcare and housing, which consequently exacerbates social and economic inequalities within society. The gap between wealthy and impoverished groups within society is continually expanding, primarily due to institutional factors that perpetuate this inequality. Drawing on data from 2009 to 2019, this study offers an empirical analysis of the role of institutions in shaping poverty in Turkey. The study applies the panel causality test developed by Juodis et al. (2021) to assess the influence of institutional structures on regional disparities. Infant mortality rates, the number of associate and bachelor’s degree graduates and the number of convicts are considered key indicators of institutional performance. The statistical analysis reveals a significant correlation between these variables and the 50% poverty rate. The findings suggest that strengthening the institutional framework is essential for addressing regional poverty in Turkey.

Relationship between Political and Financial Risks in Turkey: Evidence from Fourier Cointegration Analysis Regarding Institutional Structures; [Türkiye’de Politik ve Finansal Riskler Arasındaki İlişki: Kurumsal Yapılara Dair Fourier Eşbütünleşme Analizinden Kanıt]

    Çiçen, Yıldırım Beyazıt

Institutional structure and quality of management are the main elements that form the political risks. Political threats are directly linked to the institutional structure and the institutional design. Political risks increase if the government mechanisms fail. Increasing institutional quality reduces the political risks and positively impacts the financial risks. Monthly data from different indices are used to analyse the relationship between Turkey's political risks and financial risks between 2002 and 2015. According to the Fourier analysis of cointegration, there is a long-term relationship between the political and financial risks. Besides, as per the Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) findings and the Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS) models, an increase in the political risk increases the financial risk.

Lasting Impact of the Crisis on Unemployment in Turkey: The Global Crisis Period

    Çiçen, Yıldırım Beyazıt

In this paper, we have done hysterical analysis to determine whether the crisis in our country has permanent effects on unemployment. Here, first Harvey, Leybourne and Xiao (2008) linearity test is conducted for the unempoloyment series. Following this test, the Zivot-Andrews (1992) unit root test and the Bai-Perron (1998) multiple structural changes test were used as lineer methods. Also as nonlinear method Kapetanios, Shin and Snell (2003) and Kruse (2011) unit root tests were used. According to all test findings, the global crisis has a hysterical effect on unemployment rates and unemployment has not returned to its pre-crisis level.

Turkey's POST-1980 institutional structural change and economic consequences

    Çiçen, Yıldırım Beyazıt

A country's institutional structure is closely related to its economic performance. In this study, how economic growth in Turkey is being influenced by the institutional structure is tried to be explained, and especially after the 1980 period is discussed within the framework of New Institutional Economics. Accordingly, the positive steps in institutional change bring about an increase in investments and economic growth. However, since institutional reforms in Turkey do not have a continuity, the sustainability of economic growth is becoming problematic. The 1990s are ruled by incompatible coalitions and in the early 2000s Turkey suffered from painful crises. Increasing inclusive institutionalism after these years are also positively reflected in the economy, but this could not be sustained.
