Köroğlu, Cemile Zehra; Köroğlu, Muhammet Ali
In all societies, there have been some movements that point out social, political, economic, ideological, or moral problems or aim at partial or complete change. This chapter discusses the new meanings attributed to the concept of social movements in the postmodern era. A theoretical framework is proposed to understand the nature of social movements since the 1960s and to demonstrate their differences from classical movements. Turkey provides a particularly rich context with high potential for social movements, both with secular and religious aspirations. Religious social movements have shown quite a tense relationship with the state throughout the history of the republic; yet, they have gained power and prosperity through evolving liberal economic policies since the 1980s. Therefore, resource mobilization and new social movement paradigms are used in this chapter to explain Turkey’s religious social movements today.

- MakaleYalnız künye2014A new era in the relationships of public sphere and religion
Koroglu, Cemile Zehra
Relations of public sphere and religion constitute one of the main problems of the modern conceptions of the public sphere. Modern public sphere emerging on the mental background of Enlightenment ideals and on the basis of the bourgeois class has considered religion as a phenomenon of private sphere. According to this, the public sphere is an intermediary institution between society and the state where a public community discuss the issues concerning about the society with a style of rational and critical reasoning and all participants are convinced and they have a mutual consensus. The style of reasoning valid in the public sphere is a rational style of reasoning, because of this social actors who have minds that religious and based on religion are not able to participate in public discussions, inasmuch as any consensus on religious matters is not possible, social factors who have religious, ethnical, cultural differences have to live these identities in the private sphere. Public sphere must be an area defined by the principles such as reconciliation, objectivity, rationality and secularism. However, there has been a continuing tension between these principles and principles of secularity and totality of life that religions have inherently. The boundaries between public and private spheres has been disappeared increasingly in today’s societies. Thus, the issues described as a special can turn into the public, the issues described as the public can turn into a special. In this process, religion may emerge as a founder element of the public. Also transitivity between the secular and the religious ones has been increasing constantly in the platform of everyday life and the theories of secularization based on the positivist approach have been reconsidered. Even J.Habermas who developed one of the first theoretical approaches about the public sphere and insisted on the secularity of the public sphere, has reconsidered the relationship between the public sphere and religion. The general approach proposed for today’s societies is that religion is not no longer merely considered as a special case and today, it is necessary for religions to enter the public sphere. Entry of religion into the public sphere as a constituent element can be interpreted as a contribution to the pluralism and diversity of the public sphere. Key Secularization. Words: Public Sphere, Religion, Private Sphere

- MakaleYalnız künye2013Critical approaches to modern public sphere: a general evaluation (postmodernism, feminism and religion)
Koroglu, Cemile Zehra
The modern concept of the public sphere is expressed via the understanding of the public sphere which emerged after the 18th century. In this sense, it is possible to mention many debates regarding the public sphere which suggest different models. However, in our study within the framework of Hebermas, it has followed that the common principles and ideas of the modern public sphere have critical approaches previously unexplored. The principles of the modern publicsphere are determined within the framework of understanding man, universe, and society as determined by the idea of enlightenment. Since the modern public sphere is considered as a sphere for political purposes, it also has roots in the legitimacy of modern politicaland legal systems. Therefore, a concensus on the political issues being discussed in the public sphere. To reach definitive conclusions and conduct public negotiations correctly, it has been determined the basic principles of participants must be individuals with a rational mind. Beginning with the universality of mind, the universality of the public sphere is targeted. Modern public sphereres present universal values in which an exclusive and unequal character for many social groups which do not have these principles and values. Therefore, discussion and criticisms of the public sphere in the modern era have always been on the agenda. In addition to individual criticisms, different criticisims of a variety of philosophical and social movements on modern public sphere can be mentioned. However, criticisms from the perspective of postmodern feminism and religion are important as they are criticisms for the foundation of the public sphere. Although these three approaches are verydifferent from each other, they share similar points of criticism and even provide legitimacy for each other. Although religion and postmodernism criticizes the understanding of the enlightened and rational mind, the human universe, and secularity, feminism criticizes the determination of modern public spheres by men. Each perspective regarding criticism and legitimacy are different; however, the roads can cross on the critique of the modern public sphere
