Objectives: This study aims to investigate the frequency of obesity and to identify possible risk factors affecting obesity in adolescents. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study included a total of 1,357 adolescents between March 2011 and May 2012 in Beyoglu district of Istanbul province of Turkey. The questionnaire including 38 questions which was developed based on the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, which is used by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), was used for the data collection. The weight and height of the participants were measured and their body mass index (BMI) values were calculated. Results: Of all participants, 54.8% were females, 5% of them were underweight, 12.6% were overweight, and 2.6% were obese. Among the male participants, the BMI values were higher (21.06±3.32 kg/m2) than females (20.26±2.88 kg/m2) (p<0.0001). The obesity ratio was higher in males (p<0.0001) and in children of highly educated parents (p<0.05). Of the participants, 23.5% were physically active. Physical activity level was higher in males, compared to females (p<0.0001). The rate of breakfast habit was higher in males than females (p=0.002). Healthy diets and losing weight in a healthy way were more commonly accepted by the students in the public schools, compared to those in private schools (p<0.0001). Conclusion: Obesity is an important public health problem and proper eating habits and regular physical activity should be encouraged. High-income families should also encourage their children to become more aware of the importance of physical activity. The right time for this is childhood and adolescence, in which permanent habits can be easily acquired.

Objectives: This study aims to assess the frequency and factors relevant to metabolic syndrome in workers employed in the collection and disposal of solid waste sector. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the major solid waste collecting and disposal company named ISTAC AS (Istanbul Environmental Protection and Waste Processing Corporation) in Istanbul, Turkey. All 715 male employees of the company were included in the study without sampling. The study was completed with 619 subjects. Since it was a small group, female workers were not taken into ac-count in the study. Metabolic syndrome frequency was investigated according to the NCEP-ATP III criteria including the levels of systolic and diastolic blood pressure, waist perimeter, HDL, triglyceride, fasting blood glucose values. Results: Metabolic syndrome was present in 40.9% of participating employees. Metabolic syndrome was more common in those working in the excavation field (54.0%), such as caterpillar operators (56.5%), and less common in employees working in administrative offices, such as office staff or managers, who were under 35 years old and who had been working for less than 10 years (p < 0.05). Employees working in work stations other than administrative offices had a 2.60 times higher risk compared to those working in administrative offices. Conclusions: Metabolic syndrome may be related to work sta-tion, job, age and period worked by the subjects.

Objectives. This study aims to examine the frequency of exposure of health care providers to aggression and violence at work, and the effective factors thereon, as well as the effects of violence on health care providers. Materials and Methods. This cross-sectional type study has been conducted in Istanbul Training and Research Hospital (IEAH) (219) and Bayrampasa State Hospital (BDH) (64) in April 2010. The questionnaire prepared by researchers has been filled in through face-to-face meetings with a total of 283 health care providers, who accepted to take part in the study. The resulting data have been assessed and evaluated through SPSS 11.5 package program. Results. 66.8% of the respondents reported that they had been exposed to violence and aggression during the recent one year, the most frequent type thereof being verbal violence (86.8%). 90.2% of the health care providers exposed to violence at work stated that the applicable current laws do not protect the staff against violence, and 88.3% thereof stated that their institution have not supported them upon an act of violence. A statistically significant difference in the frequency of exposure to violence has been detected between age, seniority at work, place of exposure to violence, and profession of the health care staff (p<0.05). Approximately half of the health care providers opine that their behavior towards patients has been negatively affected from violence. It is noted that such negative behavior change is even higher in females, staff with a frequency of violence > 5, assistants, and staff who believe that security at work is at risk in their institution (p<0.05). Conclusions. Around 1/3rd of the health care providers have reported that they have been exposed to violence at least once during the recent one year, and half of those exposed to violence have stated that their behavior towards patients has been negatively affected therefrom.

Stoma education has been traditionally given in a one-to-one setting. Since 2007, daily group education programmes were organised for stoma patients and their relatives by our stoma therapy unit. The programmes included lectures on stoma and stoma care, and social activities in which patients shared their experiences with each other. Patients were also encouraged to expand interaction with each other and organise future social events. A total of 72 patients [44 (61.1%) male with a mean (±SD) age of 56.8 ± 13.6 years] with an ileostomy (n= 51, 70.8%), a colostomy (n= 18, 25.0%) or a urostomy (n= 3, 4.2%) were included in the study. Patients were asked to answer a survey (SF-36) face-to-face before the initiation of the programme, which was repeated 3 months later via telephone call. The comparison of pre-education and post-education SF-36 scores revealed a statistically significant improvement in all 8-scale profiles, but not in vitality scale, and both psychometrically-based and mental health summary measures. Analyses disclosed that married patients and those who were living at rural districts seem to have the most improvement in life quality particularly in bodily pain, general health and role-emotional scales and mental health summary measure. In our opinion, group educations may be beneficial for stoma patients, and stoma therapy units may consider organising similar activities.
