Proportional control moment gyroscope for two-wheeled self-balancing robot

    Ünker, Faruk

A two-wheeled self-balancing robot is considered for investigating the responses of a control moment gyroscope powered by a proportional controller to prevent the robot rollover against the constant inertia forces because of accelerations of the wheels of the robot. The amplitudes of the frequency equations related to the required angular momentum of flywheels with an optimum controller gain were also found. A simulation model of the robot using computer-aided engineering software (RecurDyn) is built to verify the equations of a Lagrangian model. The results of both obtained from the Lagrangian and that from RecurDyn simulations are analyzed comparatively, in which the proportional control loop reduces the required flywheel speeds Ω of gyros and keeps the robot in a very small amplitude of a stable sinusoidal motion in the upright position.

Dynamic response of a historical armory building using the finite element model validated by the ambient vibration test

In this paper, the aim was to determine the nonlinear dynamic response of historical masonry armory buildings using a validated finite element model. Eight ambient vibration tests were conducted on the building, using three different measurement test setups to extract the dynamic characteristics using the Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition method. A finite element model was constructed in ANSYS and the dynamic characteristics were obtained numerically. It can be seen that there is a good correlation between the mode shapes, but there are differences in natural frequencies with maximum values of 10.1%, 7.4% and 13.4% for first the three modes. To determine the nonlinear dynamic response, the validated finite element model was analyzed using the Kocaeli earthquake motion. The Drucker–Prager criterion and Willam–Warnke surface were considered for the nonlinear material models. At the end of the analyses, maximum displacements, principal stresses and strains are given in detail using contour diagrams. It is evident that the displacements show an increasing trend from the base to the top point of the building. Stresses occurred on the corners, openings and transition segments. In addition, crack distribution diagrams were drawn up to illustrate the stress accumulation points.

Finite element model calibration of berke arch dam using operational modal testing

Sevim, Bariş; Bayraktar, Alemdar; Altunişik, Ahmet Can

This paper presents the finite element calibration of Berke Arch Dam by using Operational Modal Testing. Achievement of this purpose involves structural vibration characteristics of Berke Arch Dam using analytical and Operational Modal Analyses. Therefore, the study has two parts-analytical and experimental. In the analytical part of the study, the authors developed a 3D finite element model of Berke Arch Dam-reservoir-foundation system using ANSYS software, and analytically determined vibration characteristics such as natural frequencies and mode shapes. In the experimental part of the study, sensitive accelerometers were placed to several points of Berke Arch Dam, and ambient vibration tests were conducted over four days to obtain dynamic characteristics. The Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition technique is used to estimate natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios of the Berke Arch Dam experimentally. Results showed that there were some differences between analytical and experimental natural frequencies of the dam. Therefore, an analytical model of Berke Arch Dam was calibrated to minimize these differences by changing material properties. Analytical results obtained from the calibrated model mainly conform to those of the experimental model.
