Quality of Life in Patients with Hematological Malignancy Receiving High-Dose Chemotherapy : A Descriptive Study

    Çakmak, Seher; Nural, Nesrin

Introduction: Hematological malignancies reduce quality of life due to aggressive treatments and related complications. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of life of hematologic cancer patients receiving high-dose chemotherapy. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 158 patients selected by simple random sampling method who were treated in the hematology clinic of a university hospital. Data were collected using a personal information form and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core 30. Results: 51.3% of the patients were aged 18 - 50 years, 52.5% were female, and 67.1% had a diagnosis of leukemia. The mean scores of the quality of life scale were 74.47 ± 19.92 for the functional scale, 71.31 ± 19.31 for the symptom scale, and 39.82 ± 26.31 for the global quality of life. These findings indicate that patients had relatively good functional status, high symptom burden, and low overall quality of life. Among the functional subscales, the highest mean score was observed in cognitive functioning (85.7 ± 18.8), while the lowest was in social functioning (68.9 ± 32.5). Patients diagnosed with lymphoma had significantly lower functional scale scores (p = 0.002), whereas patients with leukemia and those with a history of chemotherapy had significantly higher symptom scale scores (p = 0.017 and p = 0.026, respectively). Conclusion: In conclusion, it was determined that patients had a low quality of life, particularly in the areas of physical and social functioning, and a high symptom burden. Higher symptoms in patients with leukemia and prior chemotherapy underscore the need for symptom control and functional assessment.

Between Survival and Sacrifice: Marital Experiences of Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis

    Çakmak, Seher; Karataş, Hicran

The study aimed to explore the lived experiences of married dialysis patients on the national organ waiting list, focusing on the interplay between illness, familial roles, and societal norms. This research is a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews and participant observation. The study involved 23 marriage-experienced hemodialysis-dependent patients (13 women, 10 men) on the national organ waiting list, recruited between August 16 and November 11, 2022. Data were collected through interviews and observations and were analyzed thematically to identify recurring patterns. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) poses significant physical, psychological, and social burdens, particularly for hemodialysis-dependent patients. Five main themes emerged from this study: (1) When Care Becomes a Test, (2) Dealing with Social Isolation, (3) Sacrifices to Sustain the Marriage, (4) Uninvited voices, (5) Resentful but Thankful. These findings highlight the need for family-centered care that considers diverse family structures and social contexts, while also demonstrating the impact of prolonged hemodialysis (HD) and marital strain on emotional and sexual intimacy.

Çakmak, Seher; Uzun, Sevda; Demi̇r Çam, Sevgi; Tamam, Yusuf

Background: The aim of this study is to evaluate the psychosocial dimension of Parkinson’s disease and the life experiences of patients with a phenomenological approach. Methods: In this phenomenological study, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 Parkinson’s patients who applied to the neurology outpatient clinic of a state hospital in a province in southern Turkey. Criterion sampling method, one of the purposive sampling methods, was used to reach the sample group. Interviews continued until data saturation was achieved. All interviews were recorded on a voice recorder after obtaining the necessary permissions from the patients and then transcribed. The data of the study were evaluated using thematic analysis. The study was conducted and reported according to the COREQ checklist. Results: Data analysis revealed three main themes (metaphors for Parkinson's disease, effects of Parkinson's disease, symptom management and psychosocial needs in Parkinson's disease) and eight sub-themes (metaphors for physical effects, metaphors for mental effects, metaphors for social effects, mental, physical, social, symptom management and psychosocial needs). Conclusions: As a result of this study, it was determined that Parkinson's disease negatively affects patients psychosocially and they have difficulty in coping. It is recommended to implement research and application centers for Parkinson's patients with a focus on psychosocial support and to carry out awareness and awareness-raising studies on Parkinson's disease. Studies on this subject are very limited and it is recommended that large-scale studies on psychosocial problems in individuals with Parkinson's disease be conducted in the future.

Çakmak, Seher; Uzun, Sevda; Baygın, Şevval

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of poetry therapy on hopelessness, loneliness and depression in haemodialysis patients. The study, which was conducted in a quasi-experimental design, included 22 chronic renal failure patients receiving haemodialysis treatment. 11 patients were assigned to the poetry group and 11 patients to the control group. The patients in the poetry group received 12 sessions of poetry therapy three days a week for 4 weeks, while the patients in the control group were not intervened. The data of the study were collected with ‘Personal Information Form’, ‘Beck Hopelessness Scale’, ‘UCLA Loneliness Scale’ and ‘Beck Depression Scale’. Mean, standard deviation and percentage calculations, Kolmogorov Smirnov normal distribution test, chi-square and t test were used in the analysis of the data. It was determined that the sociodemographic and disease characteristics of the patients in the poetry and control groups were similar (p>0.05). In the pre-test, it was found that there was a similarity between the poetry and control groups in terms of mean hopelessness and loneliness scores (p>0.05), while there was a statistically significant difference in terms of mean depression score and frequency (p=0.016, p=0.012). After the poetry therapy, it was determined that the mean scores of hopelessness and depression of the poetry group decreased statistically significantly (p=0.009, p=0.016), while the mean score of loneliness increased significantly (p<0.001). In conclusion, it was determined that poetry therapy decreased hopelessness and depression but increased loneliness in haemodialysis patients. Accordingly, it can be said that poetry therapy is beneficial in reducing hopelessness and depression levels.

Psychoeducation after a traumatic event can help reduce negative effects by providing a cognitive framework for one’s experience. It can also enable trauma survivors to increase their ability to help coping. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of psychoeducation on hope, loneliness and depression in nursing students who experienced 6 February 2023 Turkey earthquake. The study, which was conducted in experimental design, included 40 students who experienced the February 6 earthquake. 20 students were assigned to the psychoeducation group and 20 students to the control group. Students in the psychoeducation group received six sessions of psychoeducation, while students in the control group were not intervened. ’Personal Information Form’, ‘Beck Hopelessness Scale’, ‘UCLA Loneliness Scale’ and ‘Beck Depression Scale’ were used to collect the data. Mean, standard deviation and percentage calculations, chi-square test and t test were used to analyze the data. Sociodemographic characteristics of the students in the psychoeducation and control groups were similar except for the place of residence (p > 0.05). It was determined that the mean score of the hope sub-dimension of the ’Beck Hopelessness Scale’ was statistically significantly higher in the control group (p < 0.05). It was determined that there was no statistically significant difference between the students in the psychoeducation and control groups in terms of hopelessness levels and mean scores of ‘UCLA Loneliness Scale’ and ‘Beck Depression Scale’ (p > 0.05). There was a statistically significant difference between the students in the psychoeducation and control groups in terms of depression levels (p < 0.05). In conclusion, psychoeducation was partially effective on hope and depression and not on loneliness in students who experienced the earthquake. Students in the psychoeducation group had lower levels of depression. It is recommended that students experiencing natural disasters such as earthquakes should be monitored by a specialized psychologist and the duration of psychoeducation should be regulated.

Disease Burden and Sexual Life in Patients With Multiple Sclerosis: A Phenomenological Study

Çakmak, Seher; Uzun, Sevda; Demir Çam, Sevgi

This study aims to examine the burden of disease experienced by multiple sclerosis patients and to deeply examine the impact of the disease on sexual life. A phenomenological research design was used in this study. This qualitative research was conducted with 20 multiple sclerosis patients. Interviews were conducted individually and face-to-face. The data were analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological analysis method. Two main themes (effects of the disease and sexual life) and five sub-themes (physical effects, mental effects, social effects, problems related to sexual life, sexual issues, and coping) were identified in the analysis of the data. As a result of the study, it was determined that the patients experienced serious physical, mental, and social problems due to multiple sclerosis, and their sexual lives were also negatively affected. Individuals experience significant issues related to their sexual life due to multiple sclerosis. Since multiple sclerosis is a multifaceted disease, it is thought that professional evaluation of sexuality in patients, diagnosis of sexual dysfunctions, and taking timely measures are of great importance to improve the quality of life of multiple sclerosis patients.

Efficacy of Propolis in the Prevention of Oral Mucositis in Patients Undergoing High-Dose Chemotherapy

    Çakmak, Seher; Nural, Nesrin

Background: Oral mucositis is one of the most common symptoms in adults with a hematological cancer who are receiving high-dose chemotherapy. Propolis is a complementary and alternative method used to prevent oral mucositis in these patients. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of propolis in the prevention of oral mucositis in patients receiving high-dose chemotherapy and/or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Methods: A total of 64 patients, 32 in the propolis group and 32 in the control group, were enrolled in this prospective randomized controlled experimental study. Whereas the standard oral care treatment protocol was administered to the control group, aqueous propolis extract was applied to the propolis intervention group in addition to the standard oral care treatment protocol. Data collection forms included a Descriptive Information Form, the Karnofsky Performance Scale, the Cumulative Illness Rating Scale-Geriatric, Patient Follow-up Form, the World Health Organization Oral Toxicity Scale, and the National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events. Results: The incidence and duration of oral mucositis were statistically significantly lower in the propolis intervention group than the control group, and the onset of oral mucositis and grade 2 to 3 oral mucositis occurred later (P < .05). Conclusion: Propolis mouthwash combined with standard oral care treatment delayed the onset of oral mucositis and decreased its incidence and the number of days it lasted. Implications for Practice: Mouthwash with propolis can be used as a nursing intervention to decrease oral mucositis and its symptoms in hematological cancer patients receiving high-dose chemotherapy.

Correction to: Evaluation of Spiritual Care and Well-Being Levels of Individuals Diagnosed with Lung Cancer in Turkey (Journal of Religion and Health, (2024), 63, 5, (3636-3659), 10.1007/s10943-024-02088-3)

In this article, the 1st and 6th paragraphs in the “Discussion” section contain several errors. The corrected paragraphs are given below. This study aimed to assess the spiritual well-being levels and spiritual care needs of individuals diagnosed with lung cancer. The findings revealed that the patients exhibited high spiritual well-being levels, with the “harmony with nature” sub dimension scoring particularly high in relation to spiritual well-being. This aligns with several studies which reported high spiritual well-being of cancer patients (Martins et al., 2020; Rabow & Knish, 2015).” The study identified high spiritual needs among the patients, with the specific subdimension “informing them about their health” obtaining the highest scores. Notably, in the current study, it was observed that patients’ needs in terms of “informing them about their health” increased, deviating from the emphasis on love, support, and bonding seen in other studies (Kırca et al., 2023; Shi et al., 2023). This divergence is thought to be linked to differences in the disease stage. The original article has been corrected.
