Effect of Breastfeeding Education Delivered Through Motivational Interviewing on Breastfeeding Motivation, Self-Efficacy, and Maternal Bonding in Mothers Giving Vaginal Birth: Randomized, Controlled Trial

    Palancı Ay, Özge; Aktaş, Songül

Objectives: This study examined the effect of breastfeeding education using the motivational interviewing technique on breastfeeding motivation, self-efficacy, and mother–infant bonding in mothers who gave birth vaginally. Methods: This randomized, controlled trial included 80 primiparous mothers. The experimental group received breastfeeding education with the motivational interviewing technique at four time points. Data were collected using Maternal Descriptive Information Form (MDIF), the Primiparous Breastfeeding Motivation Scale (PBMS), the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale (BSES), the Mother–Infant Bonding Scale (MIBS), and the Motivational Interviewing Importance and Confidence-Efficacy Rating Scale. Data were collected at three time points: immediately before training (pretest), 15 days following completion of the training (post-test), and 4 weeks thereafter (follow-up). Data were evaluated using Student’s t test, Mann–Whitney U test, analysis of variance, Friedman variance test, and intention-to-treat analysis. Results: In the post-test and follow-up evaluations, the experimental group had significantly higher mean scores than the control group in the “Value ascribed to breastfeeding” (p < 0.001 and p = 0.004, respectively) and “Midwife support” (p < 0.001 and p = 0.003, respectively) subdimensions of the PBMS as well as in “Motivational interviewing importance” (p < 0.005) and “Confidence-efficacy rating scale” (p < 0.001). During the follow-up period, the experimental group also showed significantly higher scores in the “Self-efficacy” subdimension (p < 0.001) and total mean scores of the BSES (p = 0.033) and MIBS (p = 0.002) than the control group. However, the “Expectation of success” subdimension score of the PBMS was not significant (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Breastfeeding education using the motivational interviewing technique enhances breastfeeding motivation (including values ascribed to breastfeeding, self-efficacy, and midwife support), breastfeeding self-efficacy, mother–infant bonding, and the importance and confidence-efficacy levels in breastfeeding. © The Author(s) 2026. Objective: This study examines the effect of risk perception and socio-demographic and obstetric factors on the level of decision-making of pregnant women via the internet. Method: This study employed a cross-sectional and analytical design and was conducted online with 384 pregnant women living in Turkey. Data were collected using descriptive information forms, such as the decision-making scale via the internet on pregnancy and the perception of pregnancy risk scale. Descriptive statistics, including percentages and means, as well as multiple linear regression analysis, were utilized to analyze the data. Results: As the risk perception in pregnancy increased, the level of decision-making via the internet increased (β=0.118, p=0.000). Among pregnant women experiencing pregnancy-related health issues, a significant increase in decision-making via the internet was observed (β=0.092, p=0.046). As the age of women increased (β=-2.623, p=0.013) and income was perceived to be equal to expenses (β=-1.499, p=0.011) or more than expenses (β=-1.953, p=0.023), decision-making via the internet during pregnancy decreased. Unwanted pregnancy has a “reducing” effect of approximately two times on online decision-making (β=-1.919, p=0.026). The number of pregnancies, education and family type were found to have no statistical effect on decision-making (p>0.05). Conclusion: As the risk perception increases in pregnant women, online decision-making also increases. Factors such as some socio-demographic and obstetric factors affect online decision-making of pregnant women.

The Importance of Motivational Interviewing Technique in Providing Breastfeeding Motivation in the Postpartum Period

    Aktas, Songul; Ay, Ozge Palanci

Breastfeeding is an important period in terms of mother and baby health. In order to benefit from breast milk at the maximum level during the breastfeeding process, it is important for the mother to start breastfeeding as soon as possible after birth and to be able to maintain breastfeeding. In this process, physiological, psychological, social and motivational factors have an effect on the continuity and maintenance of breastfeeding. If the mother experiences any breastfeeding problem during breastfeeding, her motivation to breastfeed may decrease. In recent studies, breastfeeding trainings have been applied with different techniques to encourage mothers to breastfeed during the breastfeeding process, to support them to feel competent and strong in this process and to increase their motivation for breastfeeding, adapted to their individual needs. One of these techniques is the motivational interview technique. Motivational interviewing technique has a supportive role in helping mothers to adapt to the breastfeeding process, to determine their attitudes towards breastfeeding, to address their lack of knowledge about breastfeeding, their concerns about this process, to increase their confidence and intrinsic motivation about breastfeeding, and to continue breastfeeding by helping behaviour change when necessary. In this article, the importance of motivational interviewing technique in providing breastfeeding motivation in the postnatal period is explained.

The effect of maternal functional and postpartum depression status on breastfeeding self-efficacy of the mothers: A cross-sectional study

    Palancı AY, Özge; Aktaş, Songül

In this study, the researchers investigated the effect of maternal functioning and postpartum depression status on breastfeeding self-efficacy of mothers. The study was conducted with 254 mothers with babies aged 2-6 months old. The total mean scores of the mothers were found to be 57.201 ± 7.612 on the breastfeeding self-efficacy scale, 8.516 ± 5.304 on the postpartum depression scale, and 74.055 ± 11.738 on the maternal functioning scale. 21.3% of mothers had a risk of postpartum depression. A negative relationship was found between breastfeeding self-efficacy and postpartum depression scores (p < 0.001), and a positive relationship was seen between breastfeeding self-efficacy and maternal functioning scores (p < 0.001). Maternal functioning and postpartum depression status were found to have a cumulative effect of 31.5% on maternal breastfeeding self-efficacy (F = 59.086 R2=0.315).
